i've just begun picking, and while i'm doing well with basic master padlock i'm now fighting with the sparrows revolver and an Abus 65/50. I've become fascinated with all the different kind of lock out there and this video just made it way more fascinating. Thank you this is going right at the top of my favorite bar for easy reference!
Who would have thought that a hour long RUclips video would keep me so captivated. I hate to think how long this took you to film. This could be considered as the lock pickers "Bible" for a beginner. Great job.
Thank you, Lock Noob. This is by far the best video for any beginner in lock picking. I had (he said whilst blushing) often wondered how some tools are being used correctly and how do I recognise without a key, what sort of lock I'm facing. You have answered all my questions in a way that is easy-to-understand. Since yesterday, I have watched it three times. There is just so much information. Thanks again, Lock Noob.
This video has just raised the bar for all other beginners lockpicking tutorials. I’ve been watching lock picking videos for many years and I still struggle. I have realised where I’ve been going wrong watching this video lol Your explanation & demonstrations are fantastic. This is a perfect video to watch over & over again and you will find things you missed on previous watchers lol This must have taken you a very long time. Thank you very much for making this awesome video. I love all of your videos, they are always fascinating.
A very useful skill to have in an emergency. I watched a few lock picking lawyer videos years ago and tried picking the master lock on my gun safe i had at the time with nothing more than a couple hair pins, had the lock open in less than 60 seconds and was genuinely shocked considering i had never picked a lock before. Ive never bought master locks since
I've been lockpicking for property management companies for several years now. I watch lots and lots of videos. Love watching lockpickinglawyer. This video, was the most informative video I've ever seen. Thank you so much.
49:15 The important thing to tell here to the beginners is that you don't apply heavy pressure and try to force counter-rotation with the pick. Instead, you should apply constant pressure to the pin and *carefully release tension* to see if that gets the pin moving. The real logic is to detect the binding pin with the pick, apply some pressure to the pin (basically enough to push the spring for that pin but not move the whole core) and the release the tension enough that the binding doesn't prevent the pin from moving. This accomplishes two things: (1) you don't break picks while trying to force the pins with heavy tension and (2) you can use really heavy tension to make sure you can find a binding pin and not just some crap in the lock. It would be nice to learn this technique from the start so it might be worth mentioning it for the most simple pin tumbler lock at the start of the video, too.
I'm neither a newbie nor a pro, but can honestly say this is the best, most informative lock-picking video I've ever seen, I wish it had been around when I was starting out as it's an invaluable source of information - and not just for newbies either! Thank you!
🙂 I agree, this is one of the best informative videos I seen, sure I will return to it.. Keep picking and enjoying the puzzles of opening locks.. Have a great day.
By far; one of the most informative, and detailed video on lockpicking that I have ever seen. - Thank you for the time and effort you took in making this instructional video. 😎👌
I love the explanation of disc detainers. I've reached a certain level of incompetence with conventional pin tumblers but I've never even tried to pick a disc detainer lock (or other styles such as a dimple lock). I wanted to get to a suitably hopeless level with one lock style before learning how to be useless with other types. This video makes me think I might now be ready to make a mess of a wider range! Thank you.
This is a superb video and the disc detainer was covered really well. But the definitive DD lock video was made by Bosnian Bill, it is a masterpiece. Search YT on Bosnian Bill disk detainer lock.
That's a great amount of super useful information all in one place for beginners and also for anyone who's yet to branch out from pin tumblers. Awesome work Dr Noob
I have had a lock pick set for decades and muddled through picking locks. Now I understand exactly what I'm attempting to accomplish. Thank you, very informative, and makes my rare occasion to pick a lost key lock much easier.
I'm an accomplished Locksmith. I guess? This is a very good tutorial, guide, explanation, explains it all expertly. I would recommend this guide for anyone interested in Lock picking or Locksmithing should read it live it. This person has done an excellent job in his demonstration. Hats off!
Thank you! I have been fascinated with locks and opening them since childhood. I never received any education on the topic yet I became a locksmith for a small hardware store and was told many times to start a business. My self doubt intervened and today I watched your video and learned a lot, yet most of my theories were correct. I believe I will watch more of your content. Thank you again.
This is such an engaging, informative and well made introduction to lock picking. You're a natural teacher, thank you very much for taking the time to help.
Wow, trying to do a ‘locksmith course’ in my area (Cardiff) is impossible, so came to RUclips and I’m blown away. Would love a beginner series, inc top tools etc to buy ( or someone to point me to a video that’s been done) want to start this as a side hustle/ hobby to begin with so all help is appreciated. As a noob, this video is top tier, also many of your others. My night shifts have just become a learning haven with your videos. Thank you ❤
So far the best tutorial videos I found in YT that also go in-depth about the mechanism of each lock were from Devian Ollam's channel But this video surpasses all of these by so many levels, I've never seen such an extensive video with so many cutouts to show how each type of lock exactly works Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Brilliant. You've produced a veritable encyclopedia of picking. Let's hope beginners who see this are encouraged to check out your other, more detailed, videos and fall in love with sport picking. Also amazed by some of the cutaways you've produced, they really illustrate the mechanisms wonderfully.
Ive been an electronic security tech since the late 90"s just recently in the last year started working with a Locksmith company and your detailed videos are absolutely magic. Thanks Mate you rock.
This video is very useful, I picked the lock of my office's cabinet to save my colleague who lost the key! She's very grateful and I'm so grateful to you. Thank you!
What a fabulous, well laid out, informative and descriptive video. You didn't mention the Dog or Cat, your Wife or Children, or where you went away last weekend. Had me interested from start to finish and I have been in Security forever. Thanks matey, I after all these years in the game still learned things from you. This video should be part of a Lockies Toolkit. Cheers.
I have watched many many hours of lock picking videos on RUclips, some of which are very good, but this is probably the best presented, easiest to follow and most informative video I have found. I have stuck to picking only certain types of lock since I started a couple of years ago and now after watching this I want to start learning to pick others like dimple and lever locks. Thank you for a great tutorial, you should be proud.
This video is a life-saviour (or at least a hobby-saviour! I decided to start lock-picking only four days ago but the first lock I tried I found super-easy - within two hours, I learnt how to to open it in just 1-2 seconds - so I tried the next one, a tumbler lock, and I've been at for the rest of those four days now. I could open it up by sheer luck every once in a while but I couldn't find a reliable technique. But here I am, 7 minutes into this video and trying that motion and it always works! I'm so happy, I was getting really frustrated!)
Fantastic sir! I'm no pro, but not a newbie either, been at it for 5 or 6 years now, but still thoroughly enjoyed this! Wonderfully helpful info! Thank you as always Ash! 👍👍
These tutorials are fantastic. Thank you for breaking down the inner workings which then helps with how it is picked. Really appreciate everything you put into this video.
This is the first time I've seen a video which covers all of the basic groups of locks. And you've taught me a couple of useful wrinkles. Thanks Ash. 🙂👍
Thank you very much for your excellent explanation, you are a "crack", as we say in South America. I have more than 20 years in the Locksmith, and I have not seen another video with such good teaching. I learned a lot about the tools you use to pick locks. Congratulations! Greetings from Lima-Peru
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. You make it look so easy but having the correct tools and years of knowledge go along way. Thanks for having me along for the tutorial I'll watch it again to try and soak it in...Stu from Canada..........................
Hello dear teacher. I really wish you could put subtitles in Farsi for your channel because I am sure you have many fans in Iran, but we all don't know English. Thank you for adding deaf subtitles for Farsi speakers. Thank you, Mehran, I am from Iran.
I have pinned and saved this video, as it is the most comprehensive video/instruction/review/introduction to the lock-picking enthusiast. THANK you very much for taking your time and making the video with such detailed explanation. Hundred thumbs up i I could... 👍👍👍👍👍👍
SUCH AN INFORMATIVE VIDEO! I loved seeing all the cut aways, and loved learning how the locking mechanisms interact. Learned a ton, mate. Appreciate it
By 8:50 I already picked my first ever lock! I picked a small Brinks padlock using 2 Kwikset Smart Key tools (one I twisted into a tensioner and the other a pick). It was so satisfying!
Thanks, Ash. Huuuuuuuge video in every respect. Awesome, really. 😍 This one's so comprehensive and a great resource and reference to link people up to. I know a couple of folks i will definitely make watch this one... 😉
The Apron lock at the end had false gates on it, to be able to work out the lock before you had finished explaining it plus to look how you could make the star key lock a little harder to do would be to only have certain locking gate so all four front pins need to be lifted first as if the key is in before the other pins bind... I loved every second,,,,,, and have just purchased jiggler keys and tension bars... You've created a monster.....x
This is a super well done video and it covers just about everything! I will give this video to anyone who is curious about the locksport, or even the basic understanding of all different locks. Thank you for a great vid!
Really enjoyed that. Even if you know the basics it's so refreshing to see and hear it in such a easily digestible and presentable manner. Well done Ash 👏 👍
In Russia there are a lot of lever locks with two-sided keys and wide horizontal keyway. I believe it can be picked same way, but not sure. Also, I heard that there some really effective picking method using "self-impressioning" key. Also, it's strange, that there are no videos about this type of locks in RUclips.
What a great video!! I particularly like how you covered the use of homemade tools as well as the professional variety because I've made my own version of pretty much everything as well. It was concise and well done. Thank you very much.
I have two clear locks on suitcases for over a month now and they are not budging. I can see four of five pins moving on both locks, but the one closest to the top is not moving on both locks. Is there something magical about the locks that is preventing it from opening and are these pins not moving the reason the locks aren't opening? UPDATE: I became sick and tired of these locks, so I nonchalantly took each tool out of my newly purchased bag and I roughly RAKED THE HECK OUT OF THE PINS and I PULLED TIGHTLY ON THE TURNING TOOL and WA LA, ONE MIRACULOUSLY POPPED OPEN!!!! MUCH TO MY SURPRISE!!!!!! I WAS SO TIRED OF THESE THINGS!!! I WAS KIND OF MAD. But, one opened up! Now to get the second to open. 👍❤😉. Will update. SECOND LOCK: SAVED THE SAME TOOLS AS THE FIRST LOCK, RAKED ROUGHLY AND FIRST INDICATION IS THE LOCK STARTED TO TURN A LITTLE AND WASN'T SO TIGHT. THEN KEPT ROUGHLY RAKING, TWISTING AND TURNING AND THE LOCK OPENED UP. NOT A POP THOUGH. SLOWLY OPENED. So, I have two out of two locks opened, FINALLY!!!! ☺️❤😉🌸!!!!! I CAN GET MY CHECKBOOKS!!!!
That was well worth the watch, some types I haven't got around to picking yet but I'm saving this video for future reference. Thank You Lock Noob for this excellent tutorial ;-)
I lost the key to my car's roof racks and needed to take them off, I lock picked all four of them with a standard set of picks and took them off very easily and now I'm hooked! Great video
Great video.. 🇨🇦 Canadian Locksmith since 1995.. always watching and learning daily.. I still get calls for old farm house curtain locks.. Cheers from snowy northern Ontario ❄️
Love this! Clear, succinct, yet suitably detailed in every aspect. Awesome video delivering great anatomy of every type of lock, and such well-spoken concise tutorials on beating them. As a new locksport hobbyist, love your work Ash!
Thank you very much for putting together such a wonderful and informative lock picking video. This is by far the most educational video covering so many different types of locks and techniques to pick them that I've ever seen.
Thank you so much how do you pick a old squire 550 lock as the key goes in centre all help please and we're do I buy see thru locks for practice magician new to lockpicking art love all you teaching
Another great video. Very informative. If you want detailed information, then Lock Noob is definitely the best way to go. He does a great job of breaking down the lesson so you better understand.
Great video overall! I wish the example disk from the disk detainer lock would have had at least one false gate so you could have explained why those should exist in every disk detainer lock. Of course, many cheap disk detainer locks are missing false gates because manufacturers just don't care about lock security.
Soooo helpful! I'm doing research for a lock picking minigame in a video game concept I'm working on, and you've made the perfect video for helping me try to come up with a unique system. I've been at this for 2 hours watching LPL, Bosnian Bill and the Brummie Lock Picker, but this video covers it all :)
Its almost like a shopping list of all the locks you should know how to pick. Hopefully in the future i will be able to practice on all of these locks. Im Super excited to eventually learn everything 😀 Great video man you explained everything so clearly i almost want to go and buy everything now lol. You earned a sub
Best vid. I've seen on how to minipulate most locking mechanisms to bypass them. Very informative and simply put so that it's easy to understand. The explanation on how the different locking mechanisms operate followed with the detailed steps taken to bypass them is spot on..great job!
Now let's see a video on how to pick a medeco lock.... Lol. I'm sure there's a way but when I was a locksmith they were guaranteed unpickable. I got to mess with some of them and learner how they worked well enough to be able to rekey some of them but they always had those certain locks that they sold that you couldn't even take them apart. If you lost the key you sent the lock or cylinder to them and they sent you a new one (for a fee of course). If the lock was on something you had to destroy it. On the Marine Corp. base my dad worked on they used medeco locks on the ammo bunkers. If the key gets lost they had to cut the doors off to gain access. Apparently it was a big ordeal to use TORCHS to cut doors off of live ammo bunkers cause there sure ended up being alot of people involved..... It only happened once that I know of while my father worked on base.
Best range of lock tutorial I've seen especially considering I'm looking to broaden my horizons. I only wish videos like this were around when I was a kid as I started picking locks at around 8 years old starting with the pink combination bicycle lock that you displayed, can you please do one on dial combination locks as I know there are ways to shim these locks not all of them are shimmable thanks and keep up the great work.. PS I don't want to cause any issues but do you know what's up with Bosnian bill as I have not seen him post any videos in some time
a really good video clearly explaining the subject. it is amazing how many other videos assume you know at least some of the picking terminology or lock operation and what it relates to physically when you don't really and are just kind of guessing. your pin tumbler demonstration is about perfect!
The most extensive, comprehensive, and encyclopedic video on lockpicking ever! Amazed you're not at 100k subscribers yet, let alone, 1M. What was the name of the book at the beginning?
Thanks for the info! I pretty much knew a lot of this stuff from other sources but I should point out that I have NEVER used this for any criminal purposes. I'm a part-time garbage picker and I find a lot of things in the trash like cash registers and gaming machines here in Germany where the item is locked but there is no key provided. So, since I want to sell the item in question for a decent price I don't want to ruin it by cutting it open using brute force but opening it in such a way that I can replace the lock mechanism with one of my own that (obviously) includes the key. It's always fun, though because just yesterday I opened a thrown-out cash register that had quite a few Eurocents still in it, the most recent one being from 2009 meaning the owner probably lost the key around that time and just kept it around until he/she lost patience with it and/or could not find the key, before throwing it out. One time I found a combination SAFE and it sounded like there was metal in it. I spent 2.5 weeks going through the list of all 10,000 combinations until I randomly stumbled upon the correct one. That metal inside turned out to be the original floor mounting bolts that came with the safe. LOL! Live and learn. I actually wound up keeping that safe for all my better (Proof) coins.
Excellent work! Thanks for putting in the time and energy to make a great informational video. I'm 100% an information junkie when it comes to learning how to do anything useful or interesting. You have succeeded in feeding my addiction. 🤤👨🔬 🔒🗝️🧷
Man, i fully credit LPL and McNally for getting me into this hobby, but man oh man. You're the guy who gets me the opens. Consistently good videos, especially this and the other hobbies related to locksport video. I go back to both frequently and when people i know express interest, this is the video i send them to.
I made the time to watch this all the way through.. I love it... Thank you for explaining as much as in detail for someone who didn't know a lot about this, easy to follow and I understood everything you have explained, thank you for this video and I will continue to watch the rest of your videos on this... E F. White.
Thanks for a great video! I’ll have confidence now to open my bike that’s been locked for a year that I didn’t want to cut or drill. Cheers from Montreal Ca.
this was awesome thank you ....watched the whole thing because I was stuck on a lock .... I laughed when I saw it was a warded lock ! you made it look easy . Not stuck on that lock anymore either lol . Cheers

BEST pick demonstrations on you tube Ever!! Thank you very much Sir. Excellent!
Awesome tour de force!!!!
Incredible amount of information!!!
Brilliant filming and descriptions!!
Wow!! Thank you!!!

Possibly one of the best lock picking videos out there. Very good, love the mechanics of it all.
That’s very kind, thanks
That was well worth the watch, some types I haven't got around to picking yet but I'm saving this video for future reference.
Thank You Lock Noob for this excellent tutorial ;-)
Very kind of you to say, thanks 😊
I lost the key to my car's roof racks and needed to take them off, I lock picked all four of them with a standard set of picks and took them off very easily and now I'm hooked! Great video
Thank you so much for this!
Being a new picker, this is a big help and something I can check back on for tips.
Must have took ages to do!
Take Care ⭐
Great video.. 🇨🇦 Canadian Locksmith since 1995.. always watching and learning daily..
I still get calls for old farm house curtain locks..
Cheers from snowy northern Ontario ❄️
Love this! Clear, succinct, yet suitably detailed in every aspect. Awesome video delivering great anatomy of every type of lock, and such well-spoken concise tutorials on beating them. As a new locksport hobbyist, love your work Ash!
😊
As a beginner this is the best channel by a mile on RUclips
Thank you 😊
Thank you very much for putting together such a wonderful and informative lock picking video. This is by far the most educational video covering so many different types of locks and techniques to pick them that I've ever seen.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice teaching tools. I love how you added links to the different topics.
Thank you 😊
Excellent video, very instructive. You need to do a tutorial on picking shipping container slide bar locks. I have never seen any videos on it.
Hey this video is absolutely amazing. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate, record and publish :)
Very kind of you to say, thanks 😊
Thank you so much how do you pick a old squire 550 lock as the key goes in centre all help please and we're do I buy see thru locks for practice magician new to lockpicking art love all you teaching
Awesome presentation, sir! A whole lot of excellent information, put forth in a clear, concise manner. Thank you, muchly.
It’s really hard to cover all aspects, I’ll have to do a full DD picking video tutorial
Im Super excited to eventually learn everything 😀
Great video man you explained everything so clearly i almost want to go and buy everything now lol. You earned a sub
Awesome!
PS I don't want to cause any issues but do you know what's up with Bosnian bill as I have not seen him post any videos in some time
Hi, Bosnian Bill retired in order to spend more time with his family. He simply decided that he'd done enough videos.
Outstanding tutorial, camera quality, lock cutaways, see through locks etc.
Thanks!
Really good video that covers many useful methods 🤩🤩🤩 You explain as always detailed, which is a great help for many 🙂👍 keep up the good work ❤
Thanks will do!
a really good video clearly explaining the subject. it is amazing how many other videos assume you know at least some of the picking terminology or lock operation and what it relates to physically when you don't really and are just kind of guessing. your pin tumbler demonstration is about perfect!
Thanks 😊
Wow i learnt a lot today thank you very much for such long and detailed guide very well made !
Thanks
Really,really interesting video,moved into a flat,the front room door(for some reason)has a mortise lock,but no key…have a go at it now,brilliant 👍
Thanks 😊
This is a fantastic video 👍 Excellent presentation and production, with great explanations of each lock. Really nicely done 🍻
Thank you 😊
The most extensive, comprehensive, and encyclopedic video on lockpicking ever! Amazed you're not at 100k subscribers yet, let alone, 1M. What was the name of the book at the beginning?
Very kind of you to say, thanks 😊

Brilliant video, it's helped so much and given me more enthusiasm to get back to practicing. Thanks for sharing such great content 👌
Thanks 🙏
Great effort Ash!, incredible video! You are a piece of work!
We all thank you! ❤️Amayzing!
Thank you 😊
The video I just needed. Thanks you so much for that😊
Excellent work!
Wow, thanks!
A highly informative guide and greatly appreciated!
Thanks 😊

Wow...awesome job Ash!!! So when is part 2 coming out? That took a lot of energy nicely done.

I've never seen a video like this. This is the best so far to understand how locks are made and how to defeat them without bolt cutters!
Great video. Thank you. 👍🇨🇦
Thank you 😊
Lovely video. I have had mortice lever latches apart so many times due to spring failure in use. Nice to see the picking technique for them. (Beginner)
Thanks 👍
