I used to separate the seedlings too until I saw on Charles Dowding's channel that it is entirely optional. In fact, he always plants them in clumps of 4-5 and use the twist off method to harvest the biggest one, and the ones that remain in ground gets to grow on with more space.
I know that Laura prefers to harvest all her onion in one go, so planting them separately is ideal for her. I tend to harvest as I need and planting in clumps makes it easier. Just throwing this option out there for whoever needs it.

I needed this. My kids have decided they want a raised bed garden. That means mommy has to start researching how to make these items successful so we don't get tears at the end of the growing seasons. Pray for me, y'all.

    • @cynthiarafferty7662
      @cynthiarafferty7662 3 года назад +3

You and your children can plant cherry tomato plants, pepper plants, lettuce from seed and radishes from seed in raised beds. Radishes are fun for the children to plant because they grow quickly. You can also grow cucumbers, beans or cantaloupes and use long poles tied together to make a teepee and let the plants grow up the poles. We did this when my son was little and left an opening so he could sit in his plant vine teepee. Children love to do that. Have fun as children love to garden and you don't have to plant hard to grow plants to amuse them.

This video was so helpful and informative and encouraging. I've never grown onion from seed but I think I will try this year. In past seasons I've planted both plants in trays and from individual bulb. My onions never grew larger than the size of a golf ball or tennis ball, letting them grow inground for 5 to 6 months. Now I know why.
    Thank you Laura.

I’ve noticed that seed companies are putting less seed in a packet....especially if a new variety or hybrid...I’ve been shocked too🙀

Yes - me too. I ordered some seeds from a very reputable distributor (Luke in Michigan), and in my pack of 15 purple pepper seeds, there were 4 (FOUR!) :-(
..... a couple of my other packs were short-changed too; but nothing like the purple peppers .... man, I hope at least one germinates.

I have a very similar spray bottle for 6 or 7.00$ from Home Depot. Love it so well I bought another for myself, my daughter and a neighbor!!

I dehydrated onions last summer, even onion tops. Amazing onion powder!!! Highly recommend, if storage is an issue.

We grow a lot of vegetables from seed. But we have found when it comes to onions, it is very inexpensive to use plant starts if you are planning to plant at least 2 or 3 rows -- and you support a family farm too. We particularly like Dixondale Farms ...

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Dixondale. I think one reason Laura and Aaron did this video is to show another option of what you can do.

Thanks for this video. I’ve always been Leary of growing onions due to the different kinds for different day length. This gives me enough confidence to give it a whirl. Can you do follow up videos on fertilizing and transplanting etc when the time comes? Thanks again.

I've just winter-sowed my onions outdoors, reusing the big plastic salad tubs from Costco etc. Hopefully it works out

There is a small pump sprayer that I have seen other channels use....no more cramping hands....I will put that in my Christmas list for next year 🙂

Yup, Russell totally tinkled in that pot! 😹 The dangers of kitties and potted dirt. My cat likes to nibble my indoor plants, so I've had to check and be sure all is edible and non-toxic for cats. He snacks on my Boston fern pretty much every day! Fern doesn't seem to care since I'm giving it good Espoma fertilizer.

This video is so helpful. I didn’t know that I could trim them back. That will make planting out so much easier. Thanks! And may I say, you are so dang gorgeous. I can’t believe you just had a baby. You look fabulous. I hope she is eating and sleeping well and you all settling into the swing of things with one more family memeber. Love, from a mom of 10, Christi in Utah.

There is a spray bottle made by Kwazar that also has a weighted tube. And it also not only sprays when you pump but also when you let go of the handle - so you only have to pump half as much as with a normal spray bottle. Which can be really nice depending on how many seeds or plants you need it for. You can buy single ones of it, maybe it's something someone here wants to try out if you can't find the other one. :)
