hi hi helloooo!! Here is the process behind my painting "A Heart's a Heavy Burden," completed this summer in both London and Oregon :') inspired by both the 1986 book by Diana Wynne Jones, and the 2004 animated film by Hayao Miyazaki.
There are so many things I could say about this painting. It's about romance and friendship, and holding each other up; and long journeys, and venturing out into the world, and embracing the wild and unsightly parts of ourselves. The models are my friends Apple Sershi and Harry Kirton - huge thanks to them both for posing for me :) There are a lot of symbols and easter eggs from both the book and the film here, from the bottles marked Skin, Hair and Eyes to the skull and turnip, and the tiny house in the meadow just below Howl's leg. Because Howl is from Wales in the book, the border containing many of these symbols takes inspiration from Welsh illuminated manuscripts, and I used my own photos of Welsh landscapes (where I spent some time this summer) for the background references. The composition as a whole is a continuation of my personal work investigating animal-human creatures and the importance of fantasy as a means of understanding ourselves.

Can’t help but think of the way painters used to make their living through commissions of their patrons’ favourite biblical/mythological stories and you’re paying for your tuition by painting a beloved story too. Some things never change
Can't stop thinking about how often these characters were painted in the image of their loved ones (using wives, friends and family members as references) and she did the same!
You're so right 🥺my heart wtf
@@mystery1317 that is so sweet omg
The way I immediately rushed to make a cup of tea before clicking, it’s a must for properly delving into the world of Ruth Speer
I couldn't love this more :'''')
me too before clicking I cleaned my room and dressed like I am meeting ruth
Lavender tea ❤
Aside from your paintings, I admire your video presentation - and the background music too. Always calm and inspirational to watch!
thank youuu!! I was a bit nervous about this video as I feel like I spent so much time on the painting that I didn't really focus on capturing the story of the painting, if that makes sense, so I wasn't sure if it would even all make sense. But I'm so happy it does and you enjoyed it
THE QUEEN IS BACK
your painting single handedly taken me out of my 7 month long artistic dry spell
Watching your creative process is so inspirational to me. There's something so sophisticated yet natural about the way you work, whenever I watch your videos, it feels like you've cracked the answer to the meaning of life haha. Hope you'll keep on sharing your art with us
As a Pre-Raphaelites and Moving Castle long time lover, this piece is the perfect combination. 😍
I've loved your work for a long time and today I'm thrilled.
Thank you for this beautiful artwork and this video
It's a real pleasure and privilege to watch you work 🙏
this vide popping up in my recommendations inspired me to pick up my paint brushes and dust off my unused canvases that have been sitting in the back of my closet for years! ive only tried oil painting once and never went back to it but this video also inspired me to give it another try! your art really just gave me a inspirational kick to start painting again since ive been so burnt out on digital drawing so thank you! also your work is absolutely beautiful!! 💜

It’s so lovely seeing Welsh folklore featuring quite prominently on such an amazing piece 🏴🏴🏴
I love the way varnish just makes the painting come to life. I love the use of your friends as references also!! This is so beautiful! Love it!
What a treat, I am enamored with your talent, attention to detail and beauty and most of all your art and the way you edit your videos. You truly made my day!
I wonder what story she will do next, I hope she does Narnia one day it's one of my favorite fantasy movies
This is my therapy ✨🥹
I saw this painting on a reel, and no other art piece has impacted me as much as this one. There is something beyond magic about your art- but especially this piece! I never comment on videos either, but I am truly mesmerized by your creativity, technique and style. You have created something so inspiring to me!!
Your paintings are truly amazing. It touches my soul and makes me yearn for a place i have never been to, absolute perfection.
What a masterpiece! Not only the painting but the video as well 😍
This was incredibly calming to watch. And what a beautiful end result for a painting based on my favorite story. Thank you for painting this !
Screaming. Aaaahhh a new Ruth Speer video! ☺️
Feeling so incredibly inspired, the time commitment and the attention to the details in this painting is mind blowing to me! and the way you build the composition of this piece by researching, visiting galleries and photographing your friends just made this whole video so special to watch. Thank you for sharing your creative process!
This is indescribably beautiful. I can smell the petrichor, mountain air, and feel the breeze on my own face. They both look absolutely beautiful as well. The rendering is affectionately silky as it gets. I think Diana Wynn Jones herself would be chuffed, absolutely honoured by this majestic, soulful depiction of her world.
I've been following you on Instagram for a while, but this is the first YT video of yours I have watched. I am just so much more in love with your work after watching. I also just get such a warm cozy feeling seeing a fellow Oregonian and artist
This is one of the most interesting videos I’ve ever seen! Absolutely fascinated by your process and how beautifully aesthetic you’ve made it! A perfect assault on the senses when you include the music. Simply stunning! Thank you for sharing! Only sorry I’m too late for the prints 💚✨
Oh my god. I can't wait to watch this 380 times.
This is so lovely! I particularly liked the cross hatching in the initial face sketches - amazing to see how they added so much shape and dimension.

Brilliant Ruth. Beautiful painting and beautiful film. ❤❤❤

This was awesome! I'm just learning painting, and I watched every brush stroke to glean the techniques you were using. I really like how you do values in a lighter shade, then have them gleam through a darker wash overtop.
