This is a savage race. So I am not surprised that you got thrashed. I almost rage quit half way through but I hung on to finish.

I just did my first ever IRL bike event, which was a 100 mile race. You definitely seem like you have the fitness to do well in yours, so long as you TAPER. Good luck! 🙂

Same here. I managed to get a new PR for max and threshold heart rate this race. I was just beside you on the second climb and somehow managed to hold on to the group, but got dropped on the third climb.

Hello Max, I hope you are tapering off your training for your main event. Best of luck for your hundred miler,. that is insane. I am off to Edinburgh with family, doing a more sedate 10k and my partner a HM at the end of May.

You're not an idiot at all mate. This route, I found, was deceptively difficult. While that climb isn't the steepest or longest there is, it's broken up into oddly timed sections. It can throw out ones "climbing rythm". It threw mine out that's for sure. Regarding bike selection. I don't think it makes too much of a difference, especially when you're in the pack drafting. Sure you might save maybe 5 or 10 watts on average over the race, but realistically, if you can just stick with the pack, and sprint for glory at the end, you're golden.
You gave it a red hot crack, and that's what counts. Good on ya mate.

You were on your bike racing after a 16k! WTF dude? That's nuts....
Looking at your Strava stats it seems like you are a more experienced runner than a cyclist. I've been doing some running the last months, my volume is at the moment around 80 km/week +/- 10 km. I've been struggling a bit with fatigue (especially after my football training which is only once or twice a week) and that's why I have been riding in my recovery days. I just find way easier to keep the intensity low (my heart rate low) when riding than when I run and my calves and knees seem to appreciate it.
I was thinking of riding not only for recovery as it is definitely fun, specially indoors stuff like Zwift during the winter and was doing some digging about cross training, you are one of the few real examples of someone showing improvements on both fronts.
Do you have some power metric in your running? How would your critical power (CP), from a footpod like Stryd for example, compare to your FTP? A Garmin can also give you a VO2_max for running and for cycling. I suppose you would get even better numbers in the running metrics.

Are you using obs to record the videos you’re making and another question how do you make your voice overs

    • @thewattlife

I just use Quick time for the screen recording and record it onto an external.
I shoot video of me on a GoPro.
I drop it all onto a timeline in PremPro, then I have a Blue USB external mic I record the voice over on after speeding up the clips.
It’s not a short process but I have it nailed now

congrats for this workout. You know pogacar's coach asked to his pro cyclists to do a (5min/500w)2x for their Vo2max sessions.
With these climbs and races you're almost doing this (4min/360w)2x so you can't go wrong even if you quit the race later on. Still a great workout.
    Congrats

We all have bad days! I did an ADZ race on Friday evening and finished in 2hrs7min. I fell apart 30mins/8km in and then it was the longest 1hr40m of my life with an average of 1.6w/kg for the whole course 😂

Cramps are not good! Just don't know how you do it, with very little recovery!? I did this race yesterday night as well (2310 CET) and tried to reduce the front group up the clim on lap 2, pushing 8 w/kg and an average of 364 watts. Managed to reduce the front gropu to about 15-20 riders, but had nothing left in my legs for the final sprint and endet up placing 7th. Fun route and might give it another go 🙂

You definitely like picking the hardest short B races possible. These are sprint events which you need specific training for. The winners mostly do things like the tiny races which are about 5 minute power and less not endurance. There are bandits, but also winners who are mid B for longer events.

You probably felt struggling because actually everyone was dying 😂. Yesterday did the same One in another timeframe and I can tell it was disgusting. I had to die to pass that climb just to be able to play lottery at the end. I think jus an observation In your case is more about technical rather than physical. .. yes still need to die but it really makes a difference 😂focusing on Positioning, drafting, anticipating , going smooth saving as much as posible while suffering will help you to save that extra and pass the hill. Increasing trainer difficulty a bit can help to anticipate, but penalized on cadence. On the climbs I go on lower cadence higher on torque while try to “relax”but this is just personal preference. I like to experiment with that, higher modulation on cadence depending on the moment. I like it because it is a game, and enjoy it no matter the result.
In resume, we’ll done, don’t worry, they were dead ☠️

  • @aaronpower8741
    @aaronpower8741 9 месяцев назад

If every day was good day, it wouldn't be a challenge. Either way we'll be back at it again next week.
I realised I wasn't going to make it up lap 2 at the same pace, so dropped back and held the next group. I'm happy that I could hold the front group for one run up the hill, but I need more than the short recovery section before being able to do that a second - and third - time.
Good luck in your big race!
