This is why I go for x17. Never regret, it's great, even want another one if they release x17 R2 or R3 in the future (and I still have money). It is still heavy and a big boy, but the performance is awesome and the cooling is impressive. For x15 though, it's unlike Alienware. The performance is too dimmed and the footprint is not that small or light. I wish they limit the TGP to around 130W because 110W is just too low. I don't really see the point of x15 over other brands like Asus Zephyrus or Lenovo Legion. The old m15 r4 is better than x15 r1 IMO.
Thank you for this review. I am getting ready to buy my new 15" gaming laptop and this review helped steer me away from this laptop, which was in the running because it its style. I would have been angry to drop three grand on it and be unhappy. Probably another Razer Blade for me.
I suppose it was a good move on their part to keep it thinner. Profit wise it's better for them as they can divert customers who want a high-performance device from X15 to X17, and they also got some not-so-performance people in as this machine is quite portable and extremely sleek.
This is why I went with the Legion 7i. It's basically the same weight and chassis size despite having a 16:10 display and the temps are extremely good- we're talking mid 70s under heavy load with a FULL 165 watt RTX 3080. I'm an Alienware fan (had the M13R3 for years) but I just can't recommend their products at the moment. I'd originally ordered the M15 R4 but I returned it because the thing was literally scalding my fingers while playing Cyberpunk. Hell it was hitting 90C+ while installing games. I think if you want thin and light Asus/Razer have better offerings with the G14/G15 and Blade 2021. If you want heavy and powerful I'd go with the Legion 7 or 7i- same performance as the X17 for 2/3 of the price, plus they're much more portable. And despite what everyone says about Alienware build quality, to be 100% honest when I held the Legion and the M15R4 in my hands the Legion actually felt way more premium and durable.
Acoustics largely driven by sealed vs. ventilated case. Alienware chose ventilation for thermal performance whilst Apple chose speaker performance. A big case has room for driver enclosures, so that is a loophole that the slim Alienware X15 can't use.
I disagree, call me crazy, but what attracted me to the X15 was how thin and beautiful it was, I'm happy to spare some performance for it's amazing aesthetics. The only issue I think is no lighting for the secondary keys. I love the X15 otherwise.
How has your x15 held up since owning it? I'm considering the x15 R2 because I saw the x15 R1 in person and was amazed at how sleek and gorgeous the build quality was compared to the m15 R6 next to it on display.
@@Goalier95 Thought I should point out the x15 r2 has greatly improved gpu wattage compared to r1. Like the 3070 ti runs at 140w now, which is actually on the higher end for gaming laptops. So a lot of the completely valid performance complaints Dave brings up here are no longer the case for the r2. It still runs crazy hot, true, but you know that going in with alienware. I'm excited to see Dave's review of the r2, I think he's going to like it this time around. It's not for everyone, but I think it has a place in the market now that the performance is there. Full disclosure, I ordered a x15r2 i7 3070ti yesterday because of the improved wattage
I have the M15 R4 with 3080 and love it. It's over a pound lighter than the 960M Lenovo laptop it replaced and beats my desktop with a 5700XT and R7 3700X in gaming. I don't travel much so it not being super thin is no big deal to me. Give me the performance!
This if I'm not mistaken performs better than the Asus Zephyrus G15 and gets a meh review... Proves perception and price per performance is more important than what's on paper.
I don't know man, I got this thing with the 11th Gen i9, 32gb ram, and the 3080. I've been running Doom Eternal, Deathloop, SC2, and Overwatch all on Ultra or maxed settings for several hours at a pop with no compromise to graphical quality. 120-250 fps or more with Ray tracing on doom eternal. I do have a cooling pad mount which may help I'm not sure lol. Love your approach and style of making videos man, no BS just to the point reviews keep it up. 👍
I'm glad I watched this video first as I was planning to buy this model. Owned 51m and I was looking to buy a newer laptop, this caught my eye since it's supposedly thin and it's convenient for me, but now that I've watched this I guess I'm gonna go with x17 instead even if it's a bit pricey than x15 😬
x17 is a great laptop, but it is important to point out the x15 r2 has dramatically increased the gpu wattage compared to the r1. 140w for the 3070 ti and 145w for the 3080 ti. Still runs hot but should provide that top-notch performance alienware is typically known for. I'm willing to bet Dave is going to like the x15 r2 significantly more than the r1
Hopefully Alienware still sends you laptop for future reviews😂 amazing review, keeps us consumers to think first before spending our hard earned money.
I was waiting for your review for months. I was about to buy it. Now I won't. I'll get the X17 as every high performance system is out of stock. Thanks Dave.
X15 with cherry and 64GB RAM would be perfect. And I have not yet talked to _anyone_ who was shopping for a powerful/pro laptop who said they definitely need that 1-2 mm shaved off the thickness. Gonna ask for the X17 at work (due to a laptop upgrade this year), but would have preferred a 15" with upgradable RAM and the mech keyboard. 😕

Iv got the m15 r3 2080 super max and it's arguably better then the x15 just because of the cooling
Dave politely roasted dell's engineering team. Bold Constructive criticism.
Thank you for this review. I am getting ready to buy my new 15" gaming laptop and this review helped steer me away from this laptop, which was in the running because it its style. I would have been angry to drop three grand on it and be unhappy. Probably another Razer Blade for me.
God, i love your laptop bag, Dave
I suppose it was a good move on their part to keep it thinner.
Profit wise it's better for them as they can divert customers who want a high-performance device from X15 to X17, and they also got some not-so-performance people in as this machine is quite portable and extremely sleek.
can someone tell me what's the model of Dave's watch? (most probably a Casio model see @ 1:44 )thanks
It'd probably have been better if it was using a more power/heat efficient with an AMD chip.
I think we have to live a second life to collect the price of this computer, a Syrian Kurd, salute to you
Acoustics largely driven by sealed vs. ventilated case. Alienware chose ventilation for thermal performance whilst Apple chose speaker performance. A big case has room for driver enclosures, so that is a loophole that the slim Alienware X15 can't use.
Ahh the classic Dave telling honest review… 👍🏻
looking at that wallpaper, my first thought was like "Wow! a Manjaro Alienware laptop"
Soft focus on the background is better than the foreground being soft! Especially on the frontal shot its a bit weird for the viewer's eyes
please make a top 5 budget laptops or top 5 best value laptops 2021 please. this alien x15 is incredible but it is out of budget for a lot of us.
I disagree, call me crazy, but what attracted me to the X15 was how thin and beautiful it was, I'm happy to spare some performance for it's amazing aesthetics. The only issue I think is no lighting for the secondary keys. I love the X15 otherwise.
X15 is perfect
How has your x15 held up since owning it? I'm considering the x15 R2 because I saw the x15 R1 in person and was amazed at how sleek and gorgeous the build quality was compared to the m15 R6 next to it on display.
@@Goalier95 Yes, I have had no issues with it so far, it's held up great and still feels brand new.
@@Hunter-zi3mg Superb! Good to hear positive owner experiences with a device that I'm looking into.
The thing I like about Dave is he's always to the point and honest. Not like others telling craps.
This if I'm not mistaken performs better than the Asus Zephyrus G15 and gets a meh review... Proves perception and price per performance is more important than what's on paper.
this is much bigger and heavier than a G15
Please what's the name of the bag at 2:02 ?
Informative and educational video D2D good work 👍
2:17 did that slit moved or its just me ( the line through the air vent as the monitor closes )
Dave, any plans for Teal ceiling lights?
This would add a nice shade to the aesthetics of your new studio! Think about it.
4:09 are the color accuracy numbers switched? cause I don't think I've ever seen a display with a higher Adobe RGB coverage than sRGB.
Thats the thing, my m15 r3 with i7 10th gen and rtx 2080 super can do better thermals with similar Fram rates.
You paid for the thinness not the power, you paid for last year's power with next gen thinness. My best understanding of it.
Let everything aside, But the design of this Laptop looks like it came from another planet!
I'm willing to bet Dave is going to like the x15 r2 significantly more than the r1
alien ware: not sending review units..
dave: and i took that personally ...
Hopefully Alienware still sends you laptop for future reviews😂 amazing review, keeps us consumers to think first before spending our hard earned money.
“The alienware X15 is too thin”
The original title.
I saw it because my recommendation feed hadn’t refreshed after he changed the title.
The back side piece moving at 2:17....nah I'm good chief
me watching this on the alienware x15
me after x 15 video
"Bruh"
@Dave2D, Which backpack is that? 😮 2:01
Your one video is enough for taking decision 👍👍👍👍
I was waiting for your review for months. I was about to buy it. Now I won't. I'll get the X17 as every high performance system is out of stock. Thanks Dave.
X15 with cherry and 64GB RAM would be perfect. And I have not yet talked to _anyone_ who was shopping for a powerful/pro laptop who said they definitely need that 1-2 mm shaved off the thickness.
Gonna ask for the X17 at work (due to a laptop upgrade this year), but would have preferred a 15" with upgradable RAM and the mech keyboard. 😕
4:07 - It covers less of sRGB than the Adobe RGB? 🤔
With all those drawbacks, I'm not surprised it only has four fans. 😊
Performance feind !!!!!! Now that's a phrase I would use often from now on...
Is that a snake in the background over the fish tank
Still waiting on mine ,the same exact one. ordered by end of June. reaally really frustrated from the delay but dont want to cancel it.
Please do something with the aquarium. This really need some aqua scaping. Maybe add a background or something
Has anyone heard about the keyboard issues? I heard that people were getting a lot of faulty keyboards. I ordered one a couple weeks ago and it's supposed to arrive next week. But now I'm just worried the keyboard will die on me
Yes, my keyboard dies on me for long periods of time (days). It eventually comes back but i decided to depot it while its still under 1 year warranty. It's been two weeks.. don't think I'll buy another Dell brand again.
@@empiricalscout4537 I ended up getting the x17 r1. I haven't actually had any issues with it. It's too bad yours did :( there's a lit of new stuff out now so hopefully you find something cool you like
Had any issues with your x15 Alexander?
