  • Saturday 30th May 2015, would see an incredible & rare sight, which wouldn't have been witnessed since the, 1960's. Two mainline steam tours, were due to climb the notorious, Shap Bank.
The scheduled timings suggested there was less than seven minutes, between the two trains, meaning as soon as, 45699, reached the summit, 70000 Britannia, would be hitting the bottom of the bank. What transpired in the end, was the, Jubilee Class, struggling up the bank, with one or two many coaches, which caused, Galatea, to slog it's way up to the summit, while the inpatient, Britannia, was now within one mile, of the, Cumbrian Coast Tour, while slowing down to walking pace to avoid stopping for red lights.
The main reason for the trip was to follow, Britannia, on the, Cumbrian Fells Express, which was running from, Crewe to Appleby, and back to, Crewe. The fact we managed to capture, Galatea, on this trip was a bonus. We captured the, Brit Class, five times yesterday, starting off at, Hartford, where the, Standard 7, let's rip through the station. The next scene features the two tours on, Shap. This is then followed by a shot at, Langwathby, as, 70000, sweeps round the reverse curves, on approach to the station, which we also feature. For the return trip we chose, Birkitt Common, where, Britannia, is seen twice from different angles. To finish off the day, we headed over to, Ramsgreave & Wilpshire, where the, Brit, is seen pounding over, Wilpshire Bank.
Another great trip up North, and great to see, Britannia, back to her best. I hope you enjoy the video.

Awesome video and good enough to get me to subscribe. Britannia was my favourite Triang Hornby model as a kid and it is just so wonderful to see her alive in this video

Fantastic video of the two railtours Liam. The shot of 45699 and 70000 at Shap was incredible. I was out to see 45690 on 'The East Yorkshireman'. Cameron

I was a fireman at 5A Crewe sheds in 1947/1954. I have fired all thee vines at Crewe, to London and Glasgow. I had lost of good trips and bad coal, and possibly me doing something wrong. But we never had it fail.
I always remember the most experience up Shap on a Baby Scot .it was quite a trip, the driver shouted to me , come and see the chimney. It was like a fireworks show, and I have never seen anything like it, it was at night time on that trip , marvellous coal and blowing off steam from the safety valves constantly
Normally the fireman saw little about the scenery up Shap. Busy putting coal up the chimney.
The driver said we must have set fire on the sheep on that trip.
I am now 86: and. It. Is nice to see the films you show now.

Excellent video Liam/Phil, It appeared that the fireman on Galatea was having problems, not so with Britannia as could be seen as she came into view with safety valves lifting, superb clips throughout, it's a like, cheers...Bill

84asrd84boxy Cheers, Bill. Probably one coach to many for, Galatea. I'm also informed the coal wasn't to good. Mind you, the driver done a sterling job to keep her going. Not a lot needs to be said on, Britannia. A great engine in fine form. Thanks for watching & commenting. Regards, Liam

+MyLoveOfRailways It was a great sight, though I only got to enjoy it through a viewfinder. At first I was disappointed that the Brit got held up by the Jubilee, but on reflection later on, I realised that I'd just witnessed a great occasion.

Absolutely cracking video capturing great locos in beautiful country and some incredible sounds. It's evident the Jubilee was struggling to lift that load up the hill whereas the Brit seemed completely at ease. It's a shame the Jubilee wasn't put inside at Grayrigg to allow Britannia to power through and fly up Shap. At least she got a chance to stretch her legs on the southbound run over Ais Gill.

winco68 Thanks very much. The load was a big ask for a, Jubilee, up, Shap. But, I, think the loco & crew, did an excellent job, while the, Brit, was well in control. Thanks for your comment. Regards, Liam

Liam - all great shots, but your panning was excellent. (You must have a good tripod!). It is amazing to think that two steam trains could follow one another just through the coincidence of timetabling. What a pan back at about 5:05 !! Very interesting to see 70000 accelerate away with that sort of power up the grade (when the signals looked like they changed to clear). At speed... it looks like the guys who have done her valve timing have done a very very very good job... she sounds almost unbelievably 'crisp and even'!!!! ……Hᴜɢʜ….ツ

HughFromAlice Hugh, thanks for your kind comment. It was great to have the tours running so close to each other, but, I, would of preferred to of seen the, Brit, have a clear run up the bank. Nevertheless, it's was great to witness such a rare event. The people who have worked on, Britannia, most recently, have got running like a sewing machine, at the moment. Thanks for your comment. If you look carefully you can actually see the moment the Brit crew get the clear signal as both heads go back in the cab and the driver opens the regulator. Within a few seconds she is accelerating away up Shap. That was very impressive, I honestly didn't think a Brit could do that with 11 on.
