Thank you for the reading order! It's hard to get into these series because there is an overwhelming amount of volumes, continuities, etc and it makes it difficult to figure our where to even start
I've been wanting to get into Nightwing forever so this video is perfect. The Spider-man reading order is what lead me to this great channel and it just gets better. Keep up the good work.
Nightwing is my absolute favourite character, thank you for this video! I'm collecting the Chuck Dixon run myself but for some reason, Vol.2 Rough Justice is stupidly expensive, all volumes are £10 but vol.2 is £100 - That's put my full collection on hold for a while hahaha
nightwing is my favorite DC character. chuck dixon is my favorite nightwing writer by far. the nightwing mobile was such a great idea. i keep waiting for hardcover treatment of the chuck dixon/ scott mcdainel run. i see a lot of folks putting down the villians chuck dixon came up with for nightwing. but i think they are pretty good. every hero needs at least 20 good villians all their own. i loved tim and dick and babs relationship from back in the day. they really cared for each other. nightwing as the leader of JL was great. i hated war games. devin grayson wrote some good stuff before taking over the book. she ruined the book. and thats her favorite character. tomosi got the book back on tract. i really liked his run.
Yes Tomasi brought the character out of that slump after all that crap One Year Later. I really miss Dixon's take on the character and wish they would do proper collections of his phenomenal run. And where the hell is the rest of my Robin and Birds of Prey run in TPB!!?
This was awesome!! Dick Grayson is my favorite fictional character of all time. I’m actually writing my MA thesis on Nightwing/Dick Grayson, so this was really cool!! Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel’s run on Nightwing is the pinnacle of street-level Superhero comic books! The Nightwing 80-Page Giant from Vol 6 was awesome. It’s one of my favorite single issue comics ever.
I'm trying to get into nightwing, reading as much as I can, would love to read your Thesis if possible would love to hear your thoughts on Nightwing. No worries if not possible.
Howdy Omar! WOO-HOO!! A focus on Nightwing...long deserved, if I may say! My favorite DC character outside the Trinity! I've read just about all the ones here. Question: Did you ever read "Bruce Wayne, Murderer?" Though it's a Batman-centric book, it does involve the rest of the Batman family. And there were SUPERB scenes involving Nightwing and Batman. Question 2: I seem to recall that shortly after "Final Crisis", about the same time as the "Battle for the Cowl" storyline, there were several issues where Dick Grayson temporarily heads up fighting crime in Gotham, using the resources of the Batman (since he knows how to) and he's wrestling with the notion of taking the mantle. At one point, he even talks to Superman and Wonder Woman about how Batman "is not dead". Do you remember which book/issues these were?
The book you are thinking about is that Tony Daniels book I showed. Also yes Murderer was mainly written by Dixon and Rucka. The Nightwing issues in that tpb are collected in volumes 7 of Nightwing.
I started reading the New Teen Titans Omnibuses. I can't wait to read Omnibus 3 with the Judas Contract to see how Dick Grayson first appears as Nightwing and eventually the Nightwing series.
Stoked for that collection as I am usually a floppies only collector and am having a hard time recollecting a lot of stuff that's now out of print(Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul in tpb)
I noticed that. It's ridiculous. How some of these things just go out of print. But we need a new printing of Watchmen and Sandman every freaking year!!?
Near Mint Condition Yup! The most annoying is that Captain America: The Man With No Face, is the next volume after the 3 Cap ultimate collections by Brubaker is insanely out of print and I don't get why considering that is such a seminal study on that character.
Great Video. Vol 7 was collected in the original TPB as On the Razor's Edge. It looks like vol 8 in the new edition is all newly collected issues. Thanks the heads up as I didn't know that those straggler issues were ever collected.
Will beg to differ. Rags Morales grew over time, his Penciling grew on me, and his page structure / panel layouts, became very accessible. Bigs Rags fan now.
Near Mint Condition / HAWKMAN!! Beautiful series. Early 2000’s. Vol 01, and Vol 02 Omnibus - both are OOP, very hard to find, and if you do find one in decent condt., people want $300 or more, should you by a Mystical spell of The Ancient One...find a MINT/Sealed copy? It goes for $550-$700. Ridiculous prices...woooweee..!!! But, I managed to acquire a copy / sealed, of Vol 01. That, took some work...but-I’m a Bibliophile, an old time ‘Book Hunter’....so there are very few books I cannot find at all.
Another great Reading Order video, Omar. You are the king of these types of videos. I thought for sure that DC would cancel the Nightwing TP's before they got to Vol. 8. I'm glad I was wrong. Nightwing is such a great character and I just wish Dan Didio didn't hate the character so much. He complains that's Dick is getting "too old". Hey Didio, it's a FREAKING COMIC BOOK CHARACTER! You don't have to age him anymore. Leave him at the age he is now and leave him the fuck alone! Sorry for the rant, Omar but that really pisses me off. Also, you don't do too many spoilers. People need to calm down. I'll say it again: NMC has THE best videos on RUclips! Thanks, brother! #OmarRules
Thank you for the kindest words, brother. Sometimes (really with X-men) I get so passionate about these books I may slip up about a story that came out 10 to 20 years ago. :) Didio is the reason Donna Troy and Kyle Rayner were left out in obscurity for so long.
So the tpb DC has been putting off stops after volume 8? Then continues to the old OOP ones following wargames? Ok got it. I’ve been building and building the nightwing collection for a full read. This video couldn’t have come at a better time. Always a big help Omar
As always, thank you for watching and commenting. I have also updated the description with the new printing of the Peter Tomasi run tpb. :) it's a cheaper way to get those out of print books.
Do you fancy doing a Robin reading order at some point? Especially thinking of the best Robin, Tim Drake. But would love to see what I'm missing in my Tim/Robin/Red Robin era collection. Actually, it would be cool to see a reading order for each Robin in trades!
Of Batman's current and former sidekicks whose the best combat medic? I ask because I know that they all can do acrobatics, investigating, sneaking etc, but I never hear anyone say who knows the most about medicine and drugs.
Omar, I'm surprised you haven't done any Deathstroke book reviews. The volumes of Deathstroke The Terminator. The volumes of Deathstroke New 52 and so. Please do one. Thanks.
Chuck Dixon/Bludhaven/Nightwing Volume 1 is the one you want brother. I promise you won't be disappointed: www.amazon.com/Nightwing-Vol-Bludhaven-Dennis-ONeil/dp/1401251447/?tag=nearmintcon-20
Because they need to cancel my Green Lantern Kyle Rayner volume 3 and Impulse omnibus to donate paper to the eightieth time we need to reprint these damn Knightfall books.
Do you have to read the batman knightfall and batman no mans land event to be able to read the chuck dixon Nightwing run. I do have interest in those events but I'm curious if id be lost reading nightwing without them.
Will there be a reading order of Batman?? Boy...with all those omnibus I just don't know how to read them. The Tommasi run is beatween Morrison's and Snyder's?
So is reading volumes one two and three of knightfall then starting nightwing volume one ok? I wasn’t sure if the knight fall in the video was an omnibus or a single volume
Slightly off topic, but are there any Batman collections featuring Dick as Robin with some good, timeless stories in it? The few stories in that era leaves a hole in my heart. I know why there are so few, it just hurts me. I understand the tone is going to be different because it'll be from another era but I just need something, a few books and then I can head-canon the rest of it as him being with the Teen Titans until Jason comes along.
I would say you want the classic stuff from the Golden and Silver Age. There is a Robin collection but by then most are solo adventures. There are some Neal Adams collections too. DC has done a poor job of collecting those years. How about Dark Victory?
@@NearMintCondition I have Dark Victory, The Gauntlet, Robin: Year One, Tales of the Demon, and The Black Casebook. I'm just wondering if there are any stories collected from the Golden and Silver Age that stand out.
Hey omar I love these videos, but i do think your missing something like the one shot Batman/Nightwing Bloodborne, Nightwing/Hunters and maybe some outsider he was tean leader. And where would you put them
The Nightwing Huntress OGN was collected in one of the earlier trades, but you are right. I don't think Bloodborne has ever been collected. Good call. I would put that one before Devin Grayson's run.
Near Mint Condition Wow! I just wanted to make sure that it collected issues 9-18 and not, 9-8. Great Video though! I am going back and watching these comprehensive reading orders, they are just so well done.
You can read Year One either before or after Nightwing: Bludhaven, it came out several years later in issues #101-106. Robin becomes Nightwing in the New Teen Titans story "The Judas Contract" (the one with Deathstroke & Terra) that is available in New Teen Titans omnibus 3/TPB vol 7 and its own self contained TPB

I would LOVE to have Chuck Dixon’s run in omnibus format. I have all the trades, but I’d have no problem buying those in omnibus format.

Good news is I've seen on amazon that they'll be releasing a TPB collection of all of Tomasi's Nightwing issues for next year. I think Feb or March.
