Thanks.. just bought a used car that came with all season tires. At first thought it was the wheel bearings that were worn out and loud until i saw / heard this..Saved me a repair bill. 😄
Just coming from your wheel bearing video and I can 100% agree with your conclusion on this one. Bad tire for sure! The sound is different as well from a bearing. It has a roar at low speeds....you are correct! I hate that some tire shops can't get this correct, especially when you consider that wheel bearings are expensive on most vehicles, like really expensive now! Upvoted.
My tire just started this sound, it's kinda quiet really, but I can faintly hear it. Not a wheel bearing noise. So the tire needs to be replaced I guess.... 😞?
Man I swear this video confirmed EXACTLY what I was thinking was going on in my car...thankfully I'm canceling the appointment to have the hub and bearing changed
This is bad tires. I had the same noise coming from my bmw x1 and thought it was a bad bearing. I got it checked and found that there were little bumps in the rear right tire causing this noise.
I too need to get my wife's Mazda CX-5 aligned, but her tires sound JUST like the ones in this video so it's too late for these tires. An alignment and new tires is needed. I'm just bummed I got her most recent new tires and didn't think to get the alignment done at 75,000 miles. 🙊
Thank you so much for this! It's a hard noise to hear through video but your explanation + what I CAN hear makes me confident that this is my issue. Thanks again!
if I don't change the tire that makes the noise, what can I do to improve? As I have new tires and let them sit for couple of months lacking air...can filling more air help? or low pressure with air will help? switch the deformed tires to the back? the tires will wear to get better? thanks...these questions are for everybody to answer...
Thank you for making the video, my car (Volvo XC70) has been driving me mad with this elusive noise, the last few thousand miles it has got far worse and I was struggling to pin it down to a specific wheel bearing. (I have one in stock). A clue with mine is that it gets much quieter on damp roads, probably should try the spare on the suspect corner to see if it changes. Certainly does not seem to be affected by moderate side to side G forces.
Hi, I’m quite confident my excess noise is caused by my newer all terrain tires. I recently bought a 2012 Silverado and it had very new all terrain tires when I bought it… my only concern is they are quite at highway speeds and loud between 25-35mph when driving through town… the tires have maybe 1000 miles on them and the noise hasn’t gotten any worse or better since I bought it 2 weeks ago… I only really notice the noise from the front tires, I think it gets louder as i decelerate, and the noise doesn’t really change when swerving back and forth… it just concerns me how loud it is between 25-35mph
I think so too. Got Falken AT3s after 5k of driving. They went loud, like going through rumble strips. Especially on concrete roads with a lot of imperfections. I think the tires might need a new balancing.
Exactly what is happening with mine. But I also had a wheel bearing at the same time which makes more of a whomp-whomp over 40mph. With the tire noise there’s a high row of tread on two of the tires and it does the same thing with noise at low speed or going off the throttle.
Do you kind of "feel" the noise in the floor board when it's the tires? Mine has a "feeling" when decelerating as well as a very low rumble. Almost like brake rotors, but mine are new.
I do suspect that it’s my tires as well. But… My tires are new. Bought the car certified at the dealership. But it just seems like loud tire noise, and tests out the same way. Thoughts? Thank you.
Thank you! Mine you can't hear until over about 40kph, but yeah, it sounds EXACTLY like that, even with the slight "whomp-whomp" at around the speed of the wheel rotation (or thereabouts). And no change side-to-side. Still going to get it checked, but at least I can breathe easier when I'm driving now. Smoking gun was that these were two new front tyres a few weeks ago - suspicious!
Folks, it's not just that you need new tires. You need a 4-wheel alignment as well. It's a misaligned suspension and steering components that cause excessive and eccentric wear on your tires that results in this noise. This will immediately start happening to your new tires if you ignore an alignment.
You think old tire could make the same noise? I just replace two front with new but the rear are 6 years old but have about 70% tread. Just cant tet rid of the noise.
Thank you ! I been thinking its my tire people tell me it’s my wheel bearing I’m like it can’t be I will a clicking or raspy vibration sound but my tires does the exact same thing
If it's bad tires, when you change to a different road surface, the sound will sound different, or go away? The noise won't go away if it's bearing's when you change road surfaces.
i just got new tires and i replaced my wheel bearing and the speed increase the noise goes and same when im almost coming to a stop but when i shift side to it makes the noise to
I just came back from getting my wheel bearing fixed it makes the exact same noise as the car in the video after I got it fixed and the guy said it was the tires however he said the tires are still good and don’t need replacing that’s just the noise aggressive tires make, what do you recommend?
so is this just the noise these tires make or was there an issue? my rear GTI tires been making the same noise, got an alignment and changed the rotors and still there
Did you ever figure it out? same thing happened to me, new set of tires on monday and the sound has been driving be mad and now the car pulls a little bit to the right
Our 2012 G37 we recently bought with 82k on it makes some decent noise as it's driven. Michelin tires, two are from 2015, 2 from 2018. I've got 2 new tires on order to replace the 2015's and am hoping the noise is the tires. Jacked the car up and spun the front tires quite a bit, don't think a wheel hub is the issue. Need to check the trans fluid, I'm concerned the trans could be the source of the noise, not the tires as the sound seems kinda mechanical to me...
@@EuropeanAutoRepair No kidding!! I wish Infiniti had put in a dipstick so I could check the fluid level. That fluid level check is a pain, need a lift for it and the pump...
It's actually ridiculous that a BMW allows this kind of noise to come through the cabin. You would say that the rubbers, springs and shocks should absorb this noise. Could the tire be cupped or have a bent rim?
So what was it? Cheap tires or just went bad? You don't have to buy the best of the best, but you have to consider that the tires are the only thing touching the road, so a good grippy tire can save you from an accident when you have to steer or break during an emergency.
Man....dammmm...this is my problem. You know I got all.my bearings changed in last 2 months.. Now I am going to change the tyres and see if that resolves the issue or not.
Did you ever figure it out? same thing happened to me, new set of tires on monday and the sound has been driving be mad and now the car pulls a little bit to the right
Just bought the Stang 17k miles on original tires. It's a run flat type. 30mph start hearing the whomp whomp sound. When braking to slow down, you can hear it better. Tire looks like alignment issue so I'll do the cheapest way first. I do have bumper to bumper warranty but not sure if it'll cover wheel bearing.
@EuropeanAutoRepair Did you manage to fix it? Tire remounting? Wheel balancing? I bought completely new Michelin tires 2 days ago and I have similar symptoms. I need to go to a mechanic in my free time.
Hello how did u fix it please I have exactly bought michelin 2 new front wheels and have this crazy noise. Michelin primacy 4. Were ur wheels the problem?
Once the damage has been done from the alignment being out of spec many times the tire noise will not subside when corrected. In that case alignment and tires are necessary, that’s why I always recommend a alignment check when new tires are being installed, many times saves money in the long run
Is the noise also possible to feel while driving like a small wiggle? Cuz my car does that noise, very loudly in a high speed as I thought I was being chased by a helicopter 😂 But it is super steady even at 100kph (60mph) only like at 120-130 it starts to kinda shake a bit but might be normal
Haha if it’s bad enough you could feel a little something if it has a shifted belt it can be a very large vibration, lol I’ve never heard being chased by a helicopters that’s pretty good, definitely tire

What do you recommend if its the tire noise? Tire doesn't look that bad, some wear. New tire? I noticed my gas milage is down compare to what I'm use to getting on that. Is that normal due to tire noise?
The tire noise in itself shouldn’t influence fuel efficiency, usually replacing the tires or dealing with the noise are the options, you can try rotating them but it likely won’t help much

Typical I wouldn’t consider it a whirling sound

So what can cause the wear on the tire to make this noise?
Incorrect alignment or loose suspension components are typically the offender but some tires are more inclined to be noisy than others
If it's bad tires, when you change to a different road surface, the sound will sound different, or go away? The noise won't go away if it's bearing's when you change road surfaces.
