This reminds me of a story a good friend once told me about his dad. This was shortly after the N64 came out, and his dad is a Doctor. His dad was annoyed that his kids were always beating him in Mario Kart 64. One day my friend got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or whatever, and he heard the TV on downstairs (this was at like 4am), and snuck down to discover his dad playing Mario Kart 64 by himself, evidently practicing so he could get better than his kids. I always found it funny that a doctor, who already has to get up super early and has such a difficult job, would willingly choose to get up even earlier, so that he could beat his kids in a video game.

It's not just lisa who's suffering an existential crisis in this episode. Homer did too. The way bart made him feel old, weak and past it. He was suffering nightmares because of it. That's a lot more relatable and grounded than lisa "wondering about the sufferings of the world" The way marge made it feel that it didn't matter really left a bad taste in my mouth. It's not just a game. It was homer's pride and validation. Throughout the episode, marge didn't know what homer is going through.
Maybe to you but I relate to Lisa's suffering knowing that the world is evil and there's nothing I can do. The fact people seem to be blind to what is happening in the world or make claims to justify them makes things worse. I also relate to homer feeling useless in everything I do but I shouldn't get too personal in a comment section so I'll leave it here
@@JacobTheRandom I feel frustrated, tired and become numb about it. What Homer suffered was inevitable to all of us. The realization that you're not as strong or capable as you used to be. This symbolizes what went wrong with Bart. With this game and others to come, Homer and Bart could have bonded, and maybe Bart would turn out better than he did in his many future depictions, but Marge took away that out of impatience to pay attention to Lisa.
I can not help getting EXTREMELY annoyed at Marge. Born in '83. Had an NES growing up. My dad and I used to play Genghis Khan (world conquest strategy). He'd play Richard, I'd play Yoritomo and we'd meet in the middle near Kipchak and Persia. Problem with bonding over a game is you both get really, really good at it. When the SNES came out we put even more time in on Genghis Khan II and Nobunaga's Ambition. He wasn't much for the reflex games like Mario but we'd both burn hours smoking dope and joking. No regrets. Life is short. RIP luv ya Dad!
Well, it's not worth hating her for it. Mad for a bit? Sure. Be angry at the disrespect given? Sure. If maybe she asked them to stop multiple times and for a while they kept on ignoring her, then it'd be fair...
That Oh No! will forever be one of my favorite Simpsons memories. Me and my dad were super competitive over video games, card games, fishin, hell everything..so i remember watchin this with him and it really hit home!
I was 6 was this first aired. I thought that there really must've been some cool game in which 2 players could fight in a semi-realistic style (more realistic than, say, Activision's Boxing on Atari) and then you could knock your opponent's head off when you won. Of course, such a thing didn't exist at the time. But it's neat to see how the game depicted here presaged the fighters of the 16 bit era.
James' Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing (released in 1989) exists at that time for the Sega Genesis console, not so violent to depict decapitations or killing the rival but with highly detailed characters.
Truthfully, that was incredibly rude of Marge. Asking a singleplayer game to be paused is one thing for sure, but a multi-player game, whether split screen or online, its incredibly rude to just interrupt a match. It takes 3 minutes for most multi-player matches, if you can't wait 3 minutes, then you're the rude one.
In the end, it's just a game. But more than that... I don't think Marge understands how this stuff works. From her perspective, all she is seeing is an adult man complaining about a children's toy.
Bart is a sore loser, vowing never to never play the boxing game again right after Homer becomes a challenge and pretending that it's a noble action on his part.
Before the internet was a thing, as soon as me or my brother figured out a new mechanic, we'd destroy each other, until we figured out a new one and the pendulum would shift.
0:06 The voice, the poses, the backwards jumping, the hooks. All of it reminds me of Bald Bull, did somebody play some Punch-Out to have as a reference?
Episode premiered in 1990. Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior - the birth of the 'modern' fighting game, came out in 1991 While an obvious parody and adaptation of a multiplayer version of Mike Tyson's Punch Out, this Episode features 1v1 Fighting game combat, attack combos, taunts, and technically finishing moves - before SF2 or Mortal Kombat.
True. But Street Fighter I, games like Double Dragon, etc. Somebody else commented "Ring King" seems to have a definite influence. Certainly seems there was no direct game inspiration, but like an artistic rendition of a fighting type game.
In the world of combat sports, if someone that interferes in a match, whoever the interferer targets, their opponent gets disqualified, means that person lost. So in this outcome, Marge unplugged the power, which screwed Homer, which kind of targeted Homer, so that technically caused Bart to get disqualified, so basically, Bart is no longer undefeated since Bart lost via disqualification, which means that Homer technically defeated Bart. Basically, Bart is "retiring" after his first lost.
For someone who grew up in the 1980s, back then a dad playing video games with his son would be so rare. In our home, I always get scolded, reprimanded and punished by both my parents for playing video games
I never got scolded or punished for liking video games, but my Dad was of a generation that wasn't on the internet, didn't play video games, didn't have smart phones. My brother and I joke about how 1980 was like peak tech for my Dad. So it seems kind of odd that to me as well, especially for 1990, that Homer would be playing video games with his son.
Considering Marge only unplugged the TV set, Homer likely still completed the finishing blow and won the game, he just didnt get to see it, which ofc is the entire point lol
This brings back memories. 1:57 How I react if I see a Dynamax Eeveelution (or Gigantamax Eevee) in real life, even though I love the Pokémon. 4:06 I actually experienced that exact same thing once, playing Top Gear 2 on my SNES when my '27 CRT suddenly went black and electrical odors went everywhere. I think that's rare. But while the TV looked fresh, it seemed to be internally damaged from previous powerful magnetic waves from some unknown source at times. My reaction was actually "OH NO!" when it blew out. Coincidence. I still have another '24 CRT to this day specifically for my SNES and N64, as I have a huge library for either.
The animation the creators had Bart doing at 1:25 is hilariously inappriopate and I think missed by almost everyone. That is not how you move a joystick lol!
I remember playing one of the first Madden games against my dad. It went very similar to this! Just put the whoopin' on him. He just couldn't protect against the screen pass & he got SUPER pissed off! Had to teach him how to play Army Men Sarge's Heroes so he could feel catharsis.

I am not impressed by what Marge did. Importance is a matter of the individual. In destroying what was important to Homer, in his shoes I would be like "Why should I care about your thing when you didn't care about mine?" Marge knew Homer was actually losing sleep over this game and situation so she has no excuse.

This reminds me of when me and my dad used to play video games together. It was the only time we ever really bonded. He was always working and I was always with friends/doing school work. But when we had a new game (especially back when you could hire them for a few nights) we'd stay up with snacks and help each other beat the early Medal of Honor games or Call of Duty. It was nice to have that bonding time together. Video games allowed that.
The boxing game is primarily based on the classic NES title "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!", from the little character idle animations during announcement, to the referee's appearance and movements. The controllers are a nod to the Atari 2600's single button joystick. I do wonder about those "fatalities" though... I'm sure there were gruesome video games even before 1990, but I wonder if it was just the writers' own take. Then, you have to imagine whether the creators of Mortal Kombat were a little inspired by this episode, lol. And finally... dingy, packed arcades. We'll never have those times again. @@RMetsy - I had friends back in the 80s who beat Castlevania by never turning off their Nintendo. They would unhook it from the back of the TV when they weren't playing. Hook it back up the next day and resume where they had paused. (You couldn't save progress on the old consoles.)
It's not just lisa who's suffering an existential crisis in this episode. Homer did too. The way bart made him feel old, weak and past it. He was suffering nightmares because of it.
That's a lot more relatable and grounded than lisa "wondering about the sufferings of the world"
The way marge made it feel that it didn't matter really left a bad taste in my mouth.
That is way more personal.
What's even more irritating is the show never gave Homer a proper closure. That it's a lesser issue than lisa.
It's so funny, as a former very young kid at the start of the 90s, they just nailed the scene perfectly. Because my generation basically were introduced to video games in their infancy when we were very young we became quite comfortable and adapted to them very quickly. Whenever grown-ups would pick up the controller they usually tried to control the character by moving their body around and moving the controller through the air just like Homer. This symbolizes what went wrong with Bart. With this game and others to come, Homer and Bart could have bonded, and maybe Bart would turn out better than he did in his many future depictions, but Marge took away that out of impatience to pay attention to Lisa.
Yeah come to think of it, that was pretty messed up.
Bart needed to be humbled, but staying undefeated Bart's God-complex and invulnerability will cause him to get into bigger trouble
1:14- Shockingly this cutscene from the Simpsons predates Mortal Kombat which came out 3 years later in 1992.

I can not help getting EXTREMELY annoyed at Marge. She's without any sense of respect for what other people might feel is important and is completely convinced that she is right and they are wrong, even treating it as no big deal. I know it's just a cartoon but it really annoys me.

I think it was Marge in this episode, but not all-the-time Marge. Peggy Hill on the other hand….literally the worst. All the time.

Seriously Marge, Homer just needed one last punch, to be at peace. Let the man have one W
She had so little understanding of the situation that she couldn’t even begin to understand it.
And that ruined 20 years of father and son relationship
She couldn't wait a few extra seconds to let Homer have his moment to mess with Bart
I actually hated Marge for doing that to Homer. He was about to get a measure of revenge on Bart, before she pulled the plug on the game.
You hate "Marge"? or you hate the writer that decided that to happen?

Writers were on point with classic Simpsons.
Figured its based off Mike Tyson’s punchout on NES, well Mortal kombat came out not long after so that was a good time, to be a kid
Yeah, crazy old times.
To me the game had a 'Ready 2 Rumble' feel to it. But I know that game came out much later.
James' Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing (released in 1989) exists at that time for the Sega Genesis console, not so violent to depict decapitations or killing the rival but with highly detailed characters.
@@BEACH.LUVER101 it's absolutely based off of Mike Tyson's PO. Homers character is basically king Hippo

3:54 I haven't laughed that hard in so long! That delivery is unreal hahah QUIET MARGE!!
This is what happened when Mike Tyson fought Glass Joe
Glass Joe’s comeback was astounding, to be sure.

Episode premiered in 1990.
Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior - the birth of the 'modern' fighting game, came out in 1991
While an obvious parody and adaptation of a multiplayer version of Mike Tyson's Punch Out, this Episode features 1v1 Fighting game combat, attack combos, taunts, and technically finishing moves - before SF2 or Mortal Kombat.
True. But Street Fighter I, games like Double Dragon, etc. Somebody else commented "Ring King" seems to have a definite influence. Certainly seems there was no direct game inspiration, but like an artistic rendition of a fighting type game.
Very poor show from Marge. Homer was about to school Bart on humility and she blatantly disregarded her husband's feelings.
Bart announced his retirement because he knows he lost against Homer. Living with this knowledge is worse than losing with dignity.

Lozing
That's how father-son relationships should be, playing video games together in a friendly competitive way.
1:15 The Simpsons version of a fatality before Mortal Kombat existed.

I love how the video game music has the same sound and rhythm as Mike Tysons Punchout on Nintendo back in the day.
Oh yeah, heavily influenced by Mike Tyson's punchout! Great stuff.
It's especially noticeable in the fight where Homer was winning 😅
homers ''oh no'' at the end is the funniest thing ever
For someone who grew up in the 1980s, back then a dad playing video games with his son would be so rare. In our home, I always get scolded, reprimanded and punished by both my parents for playing video games
I never got scolded or punished for liking video games, but my Dad was of a generation that wasn't on the internet, didn't play video games, didn't have smart phones. My brother and I joke about how 1980 was like peak tech for my Dad. So it seems kind of odd that to me as well, especially for 1990, that Homer would be playing video games with his son.
Homer still won, that final blow went off even after the TV was unplugged.
Marge is going to Hell for that one
I despise Howie’s mom for saying “And you, a man of your age, you should be ashamed of yourself” in front of Homer
I know! Stereo-typical response for so many years... glad that mentality has mostly died.
Marge has no idea the damage she inflicted upon Homer unplugging the game
Considering Marge only unplugged the TV set, Homer likely still completed the finishing blow and won the game, he just didnt get to see it, which ofc is the entire point lol

It's ironic because people my age 38 play games all the time in this era. Isn't homer my age? Games are more popular now with adults these days.
For better and for worse.
