    The 2020 Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the World Championship match that's set to take place in Dubai this December. The 14-round event is being played in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Yekaterinburg, Russia from 17 March to 3 April 2020. The prize fund is €500,000.
    The players have 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40. A playoff (beginning with four 25-minute games) is unlikely as head-to-head, no. of wins and Sonneborn-Berger are used first to break a tie for 1st place. Official website: en.candidates-2020.com

      gerardo mejia , too early for conclusions , my friend. We have 12 rounds to go and lots of things can happen. Last time after the first rounds Kramnik was the leader and Karjakin had a disastrous start in the Candidates 2018. Then everything changed. Kramnik started over pressing and losing and Karjakin started getting his form back and winning (coming closer and closer to the tournament leaders Mamedyarov and Fabiano). Everything is possible.

    Why is anybody shocked? The focus of these comments is "Wow, Ding lost!" Perhaps it's more accurate to say MVL and Wang Hao played for brilliant wins. Sometimes, the competition just steps it up. At this level of chess, any one of these guys is capable of beating any one of these guys on any given date. The small differences between these players, as reflected in their ELO is determined by the smallest of margins that won't be reflected by the moves in a single game. That's what makes the Candidates so compelling.

    • @andrewkoines6389
      @andrewkoines6389 4 года назад +5

      This^^ That is why whenever everyone picks the latest flavor of the month, I'm always skeptical.
      I have forgotten the order, but MVL had a huge run a few years ago and he was chosen, then So, then Mamedyarov, and others. The difference between the top players is pretty small. Anything can happen in double round robins with 8 players. I say bring back match play.

    • @beerbatov
      @beerbatov 4 года назад +7

      Dont forget that Ding went 100 games without a loss. Thats why it's shocking

    • @salmarwow
      @salmarwow 4 года назад +2

      To be fair, it as Ding's own fault when he lost to Wang Hao. He had slightly better position, then one mistake and he get's up in worse position. Sure, he missed one chance later to come back into the game. Against MVL, I'm not too surprised. If MVL is in good shape, he's a serious threat to anyone, including all TOP 3 players.

    you all know how Fischer started against Spassky......it was thought no way can Fischer come back from giving away games to a world champion and yet he did. things like that happen, but while they are happening they look like disaster, they have to look like that because it's the only way a great comeback can get set up. think like an algorithm........crazy, exciting things happen from time to time in all endeavors including chess. what are those crazy things going to look like? like Fischer demolishing and sweeping GMs 6-0? like spotting a world champ a couple of games and then kicking his ass? this could very well be history in the making, i bet Ding comes back with a string of Ws and runs out the tournament undefeated.

I would just enjoy playing others who enjoy your content and maybe get to display some our vast knowledge that we have acquired from you to you. And here is a #quote from one of the commentators Daniil Dubov, I think during this game: "You don't play the classical Ruy Lopez as Black for active ideas." He was describing how you just sit back and wait for White to do something, parry that, trade down, and get your draw as Black. That's what Super GMs do.
    Ding Liren certainly has many challenges. He had to wait in quarantine for two weeks outside Moscow, he does not have several people who usually travel with him as they are stuck in China. I'm sure he has much to worry about regarding conditions there, though they are getting better. But now with two losses to start he has to really find a way to right the ship, perhaps going for clean draws in the next couple games to get his confidence back.
    Not only that, but no one expected the first two rounds to start with two decisive games in each round. They playing have said in their interviews that the conditions are less than the best because of all the outside concerns regarding the coronavirus.

    Normally I'd say Ding still has a decent chance to rebound especially since we're so early in the tournament, but problem is tomorrow Ding faces Fabi, and if he can't improve his game really significantly he'll get wiped out there. A 0/3 start including a loss to Fabi would make a comeback highly unlikely considering how consistent Fabi is in general and so far in this tournament

    I feel so sad as if I’m losing the tournament. After the last candidates Ding Established himself as the next world championship challenger remember the 100+ unbeaten streak ? And CRAZY alpha zero lines he found on board during 2018-19. Ding Liren was is and will be a Monster okay but God knows what is happening to him in this tournament. Maybe pressure is getting to him & extremely high expectations of fans like me😞

    01:56 Because black put Bc8 to b7, white goes for a3 to keep the B on this a2-g8 diagonal. The other choice was to play c3, to tuck it back to c2.
    05:31 c4 is the star move. Ding missed this because if bxc4, then Ba4 attacking Qd7 and Re8. Ouch!
    He had to play Rf8 the move before. Now white is much better.
    07:20 White cannot play Qh5 yet or else Qxb5. White should protect his b5 pawn with Bc4. Bu then Ding got in Kg6 later.
    15:12 Long engine line if Kxf5
    17:52 Final Tactic
    Ding starts with 0/2. Who would have predicted that.

    I'm really sorry but this time, for once, i totally disagree with you...
    0:42 Look at Ding, Agad !
    He was just wondering : "What about having a nice sip of water ?"
    And then : "But if i take some now, the glass will be half empty."
    And now, if we consider the situation, we enterend in a disgusted engine's lines with so many complications, but it s a very hard one to found where Ding entered in deep calculations like those ones :
    "Considering that we just made 10 moves and entered in a completely new game, is that the right decision ?" "Maybe after some captures, captures, i could even capture a sip of water to prolong this captures' moment ?" etc.
    And so on !
    Oh well, maybe that explains everything !
    I purpose an improvement of this title :
    [Ding, Look at your King rather than your Glass !]

    I have seen far superior play here compared to the recent Chess World Championship between Caruana and Carlsen which I quite frankly found boring but was impressed with Fabiano's string defensive play when all seemed lost on many occasions - Carlsen never seemed to be "in" the tournament emotionally - he was playing "detached" as if his head was somewhere else - his moves uninspired and lacklustre - these Candidate games are showing some very intriguing play so far
