The 2020 Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the World Championship match that's set to take place in Dubai this December. The 14-round event is being played in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Yekaterinburg, Russia from 17 March to 3 April 2020. The prize fund is €500,000.
The players have 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40. A playoff (beginning with four 25-minute games) is unlikely as head-to-head, no. of wins and Sonneborn-Berger are used first to break a tie for 1st place. Official website: en.candidates-2020.com

I love your nickname
@Peter Mortensen I'm always open to suggestions, apart from getting a life, because that's not going to happen!!
It was not only Ding that felt "No, not in the first game! :("
Rooting for Ding, I pretty much also felt the same :( :(
Ding said that u are gay
The picture of Wang Hao is my favorite picture of a human being.
I wonder if Wang Hao agrees lol
Wild opening day. If I have to be trapped in my house this is the kind of content that I want.
DING Liren missed so many tournaments to fully prepare for the candidates and he loses the first game with white.
He had to prepare in Russia because of coronavirus outbreak, conditions aren't ideal for him there so this could happen.
@@agar0285 They have heating in Russia, you know that, right ? In fact, Russians like the interior spaces quite warm
@@agar0285 same with hao... He had more issues preparing than ding. He doesnt even have seconds
There are always excuses. But it comes down to playing winning/fighting chess which is the great equalizer.
Black had the initiative and the attack for almost all of this game.
He must be nervous, and Hao played really well...
"After captures and captures you don't have the luxury of captures because of captures", Agadmator knows how to capture our attention... :D
Agad, Thanks for the extra commentary...always welcome, but especially with all the other problems dominating our lives right now!!
Giri was undefeated in the 2016 Candidates, Ding in the 2018 Candidates. To see both losing in the first round this year!
Giri also made a life'a worth of draws in that tournament, earning him the nickname "Drawnish". He has been on a tiny bit of a tilt lately as he lost to Firouzja in Wijk. Ding at least was 2800+ going into this game and won a game in the 2018 Candidates
@@joedorben3504 Yeah right. Apparently chess24 is giving 1 month free for every draw Giri makes in this tournament on a year's subscription 😂
Spoilers bro... Damn
Ding losing with white is surprising. Giri losing with white is expected...he's been finishing in last place or near last place in most tournaments lately.
@@jasonmichael3676 he played well. Just not quite as sharp.
The white rooks are so feeble at the end, it's like they're not even there. Fascinating.

"After captures, captures, you do not have the luxury of captures because of captures" is the most agad sentence I could expect 🤣
Glad to see you’re keeping well, Antonio. Thank you for this video of the English opening.
Peter Mortensen Thanks?
Your commentary is the best agadmator for many things :
*you check many lines which can happen
*you explain these lines in an interesting way ,and make them easy to understand for normal chess players
*also your commentary is very funny
*asking for pausing the video and find the best move makes us kind of participating in the video with you and pay attention.
I think all this come from your love to the game except being funny cuz that is in your nature...keep Up the good work ,agadmator.Thank you for being an excellent commentary :).
Thanks so much for these videos, agadmator. They really brighten up the day, especially now. Keep up the great work!

can you do 2 games from each day of the candidates tournament, i think we would all appreciate it
The title tells me that Ding lost. Makes me sad, because I really was hoping for Carlsen versus Liren... =(
The tournament isn't over yet
Well a loss really puts ypu back by a lot.
Why? Magnus generally dominates Ding, it wouldnt be an interesting match
@@Sidnev How many players lose rd 1 in the candidates and go on to win it? The field is just too strong, if hes losing to Wang Hao then imagine how he'll do against Nepo, Fabi, MVL, etc. His chances of winning are basically gone
@@joedorben3504 This is my first chess tournament I'm following, so I don't know exactly what the consequences of losing in round 1 are. In most other sports it's more than possible to win a tournament after losing a single game, so I assumed chess would be the same
So black was on top today. Awesome stuff
Wang Hao is really an inspiration.
Both Hao and Nepo sacrificed the exchange and win with blacks.
Good point!
15:06 It doesn't matter how many rooks you have, they're pretty much useless! Top tier commentary.

‘You do not have the luxury of captures because of - captures.’
- Agad, 2020
I believe Wang Hao was at one point the highest rated player from China (need confirmation) and he's been 2700+ since like 2009 so he's no chump. Still more than a little shocking. I think most commentators thought Ding would hold a draw and didn't spend too much time on that game. So thank you for making this video.
I saw the game Live and It's really hard to digest that Ding Liren Actually Lost his first game.
Stay healthy Agadmator! God bless Croatia! My sister in law is Croatian.
Have you shown any other Wang Hao videos until today?
Yassir Maurice and Alejandro stressed on the fact that Ra3 and f4 was inaccuracies during the live commentary!
Surprised to see you didnt mention that!
Agadmator,What is Candidates Tournament? Is it just a tournament like any other?
Its a tournament conducted by FIDE to determine would be play against the winner of the previous winner of the world chess championship that occurs every 2years. In this case, to determine who is going to be the opponent against Carlsen the winner of 2k18. Hope it helps.
@@georgeray649 Thanks for your information. It helps a lot.

@Peter Mortensen Relax a bit, I just did an abbreviation of Wikipedia with the use of a dot at the end of the word wiki.
The Wikipedia encyclopedia is the most widely used wiki after all. 😃
And the wiki address you sent, well, it probably contains more or less the same information I quoted, so nothing new there.
Furthermore, the address you wrote doesn't seems to be correct either. It supposed to be.

This game cements my belief that Mamedyarov x Carlsen is the best possible match up and, therefore, the one I want to see.
Well, then you'll have to wait until 2022 because Mamedyarov is not playing in this Tournament
@@Jonathan-ec9pp Indeed. This tournament will have much better games than the title match. Carlsen will destroy whomever wins, just like he did with Caruana last time.
Wow a lot of videos today! :)
Please give us MVL vs Caruana!!
It's usually when your opponent plays a move you completely missed that you know you're losing.
Hi agadmator, are they handshaking before the game starts or ends? Corono tragedies😆😆
I found both of the pause moves in this game, and I've never felt so smart in my life 😅
Queen exchange was unnecessary from Ding as F5 plan of pawn didn't work and instead allowed knight to enter...
Preparing to what the light square bishop?
Sometimes I don’t watch the video, I just like to fall asleep to his voice
Great Job Man
That photo at 0:30. Wang Hao was looking at that board like that after making his 40th move. Because he already knew he was winning.

Ding is beaten by his anxiety. The true Ding can win the candidates, and i believe he will.
Ding has been down of form last 12 months ... 18 months ago I would of believed you!
Sometimes it makes sense to lose on purpose or to not use your preparation.
Ding will most likely beat carlsen. You can quote me On that
@@timbuckthe2nd642 If there is a person who can beat carlsen in classical, its ding liren.
but it doesnt mean he will win candidates
7th Archangel that’s exactly what it means. Trust
@@timbuckthe2nd642 I agree about Carlsen ... out of the field Ding is the only one Carlsen would not want to face. Ding has to get there first ... and I now don't think he will make it ... I see this as a crashing win my Hao. Instead, Hao has announced he has arrived.
