It's important to note that rocks, foliage and other debris are dynamically removed from areas travelled by the most players. This has been in the game since the original release.
The pathways being different is possibly due to the PS4 version having an older save file and when other players traverse the same areas, the map actually changes as more feet are wearing down the terrain.

@Gary Higginson are… you dumb? An LG OLED Cx is literally 10x better than any PC monitor you can buy for that price. 1ms response time, 12bpc color, OLED blacks, infinite contrast… to get similar on PC you’re spending $3-5000. In fact, I run my PC on my OLED. I can also tell you, owning this game on both PC and PS5, that a 2070 does not match the PS5 in performance in this game. To get 4k60 with a 2070 you have to use very heavy DLSS options, meaning, you’re nowhere near 4k.
A great analysis for a great game. Regarding specifically the paths being different between the versions at 6:10, I think that's part of the Strand system in the game, which automatically updates the terrain to create a worn path based on where players have most often traversed. It's pretty much what John described with using player telemetry, but I'm not sure it requires manual input from the developers.
I wonder if the strand system changes map details like the rocks being on different sides or just being modeled differently? I understand the whole thing about paths being made whenever players walk through them a lot, but not sure about the bigger geometry changes.
No they have altered the map themselves. Rock structures in the difference didn't change from the strand system, and it also didn't work properly on ps4 anyway.
I mentioned this in another review comment-the level of commitment and care put into this game stands out in stark contrast to too many other games. This review acknowledges that care.
I still can’t stop playing this game. I can’t wait to get a PS5 to play this for the controller mechanics alone. I want to feel every piece of the terrain and keeping Sam balanced depending on trigger pressure sounds like a perfect fit. Im so damn excited for this!

@@billybadass7718 In reality, if you've already beaten the PS4 version and plan on buying the upgrade, why even bother transferring your save? Experience it fresh again with all the new stuff added gradually to your arsenal, that's what I'll be doing. The whole point of the game is to admire and traverse the landscape, and build structures over time. One thing I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned: is the budget for structures increased in the PS5 version? I'd imagine it's possible, that was one of the biggest flaws of the PS4 version imo, it's what made me stop playing.
I’ve been playing in quality mode and I just can’t get enough of it. I can tell off and on that it’s not stable 60 but it’s just not noticeable enough to sacrifice the native 4K. Game is just breathtaking on PS5.
Does the PS5 @6:30 have a better water ripple/physics here compared to the PS4 Pro version. It's quite noticeable IMO. There's also the point @7:40 Is there actually an upgrade here on this aspect?
At last! Something more tangible than frame rate and resolution, no way I'd pay for an upgrade that just does frame rate and resolution...but improved water, greater geometric detail, more foliage, ray tracing...thats when I'll open the wallet!
Just seems like one of those artistic improvements, like the changes to the terrain, as there is no hardware limitation to increase the noise distortion on the water shader on the Pro hardware. Either that or the LOD for the shader is pulled further out on PS5.

Yeah, he should have put time in building the roads. You can drive your truck to all the major points on the map. Connect the other remote ones through ziplines. You struggle and then you get better and better every delivery and every chapter. After playing Death Stranding and Kingdom Come Deliverance (in 2022). I realized that these are some of the most immersive games out there.
Thank you for the excellent review, John. I have settled on going with the ultrawide mode for the mostly 60 fps presentation and increased FOV based on your analysis. I think this offers a best-of-both worlds experience on PS5.
I'm going to give it a go, but my PS5 is hooked up to a large TV that I sit quite far back from. The increased FOV might not feel right in that setup for me (which would be a shame, given the performance boost)
@@seanw1783 I’d recommend you go with performance mode in that scenario. If you are quite far from the TV I’m not sure if the 4K pixel density of quality mode is going to have as transformative effect on your experience. That way you also get a fullscreen 16:9 view versus UW mode with black bars and a rock solid 60 FPS.
This is a great use case for the ultra-wide aspect ratio here. I think this looks great and should be a feature on a lot more games - it lends itself to a more cinematic presentation. Great review John!
Only games that can do it correctly like this. One game that did it very wrong was The Order 1886. They used it simply because they couldn’t give a full screen 1080p at a stable framerate and looked like trash because of it. Really ruined a good game. It can be good, it can be bad.
@@MasterMayhem78 The Evil Within originally had forced black bars too, but they later patched them out and increased the resolution... wonder if the same could've been done with The Order 1886, but I guess we'll never know, lol.
Couldn't agree more, not only does it make you feel like you are involved in an interactive film more than a game, it allows a native 4k60fps experience with a much better FOV that includes all the "quality mode" features. I'm all for this becoming a new standard option in console games graphics menus.
RDR2 also added the black bars for cut scenes and cinematic mode. It definitely gave the game a "cinematic" feel, but I don’t think they actually increased the FOV or resolution or anything. Makes me wish they’d release a next-gen upgrade that included some features like Kojima’s team pulled off here.
I disagree. DEATH STRANDING's cutscenes were never intended to be in 21:9. Camera angle and placement are for 16:9. For me the game works better in 16:9. RDR II cutscenes and The Order 1886 were designed with 21:9 in mind, so every camera angle is (nearly) perfect.
The water and hair both look vastly improved. I could see the hair being a consequence of native vs checkerboard but is the water just higher res or did they actually redo it?
@Bryce Czirr There's a difference between resolution and framerates, in quality mode it's always 4K, the framerates dip sometimes in demandibg sequences
@Bryce Czirr What does that have to do with anything? You said it's "not even 4K" I'm telling you it's always 4K, it's the framerates that changes sometimes. My man really out here comparing high end PC's to a 400 bucks console, you need to go outside more
Sekiro couldn't even compete with that sh**y story it had. Some people enjoyed the gameplay though. So, it might actually come down to a "gameplay vs story" comparison.
MANNN I WISH wayyy more developers would do this letterbox ultra wide option, I find black bars cinematic and not annoying and I would love that extra FOV and immersion in a big open game. Really cool feature!
John, the game changes the terrain based on the paths the player(s) have walked. Ground is smoothed and rocks are removed wherever feet have fallen. Repeatedly walking over the same terrain will create paths, but the "smoothing" and rock removal happens after a single pass. This was in the original game.
It's so refreshing to have a DF video direct to the point, without a "guest" included essentially not saying anything the video's host wasn't going to say and just occupying time.
The maps are different because it actually updates online, when players walk a lot through an area, it creates a path, for example. You learn about it pretty early in the game and it is an important part of the "strand" experience.
Would like Alex and Tom to comment about DualSense support (when applicable), as John does. A strong game hardware feature deserves a quick DF opinion 🕺
18:12 this explanation is the best one I’ve heard yet and it’s exactly why I really liked the game in the beginning. This game is about the travel not the destination.
@Bryce Czirr Devil May Cry 5 has a lot going on visually, is a AAA title, and it looks great @ 120hz on ps5. Nioh 2 is another AAA title with tons of particle fx and visual shenanigans that looks great. There's also AAA racing games, and FPS games that run well @ 120hz. So, you're wrong af.
Just looking at these results, they could have just gone with DRS and had it be 2160p most of time and drop to 1800p for the areas it needs to to maintain 60fps. Gotten best of both worlds.
Yeah its weird they wouldn't go with such an obvious solution, dsr shouldn't be complicated at all to implement at this point and should be a standard option to toggle
@@lalunabelle3 You realize that in video quality mode barely drops below 60fps at all. so in like 90% of the game you'd be running at 1800p for no reason. this is literlaly best edge case where they could have just used one mode that is 2160 that only dynamically scales to 1800p in those trouble spots and it would have createdd best visual experience across board. it makes sense to have two modes if quality can't reach 60 most of time (or at all) but that's not the case here. having two modes was literally a bad move here.
Everything the man touches is pure art, - matrix level eye candy, and i cant get enough of his work . 2 years old or not - very little out there holds a candle to his work. Ghosts of Tsushima is insanely gorgeous - HDR 4k has to be experienced . ps5 rock both titles.
@Game Master it’s definitely longer than I expected if you hunt for everything. It has some low quality assets here and there but it’s to be expected since it’s an indy game and cross-platform… but overall its awesome and worth the $40
I noticed on your PS4 pro version it's an endgame file where foot paths were already formed, but the PS5 save file is new and there are no visible foot paths. The terrain dynamically wears down over the campaign as players traverse each area so some of your terrain comparisons may differ because of that. You should check this over again offline with brand new saves.
@@cured_bacon647 the rock geometry doesnt change but the dirt on a well traveled path raises up to produce a more level surface which buries rocks over time. So some rocks and rock formations basically disappear with enough traffic.

I *love* the ultra wide. I think it works for the benefit of the game in strides. With how cheap the upgrade price is, all of this content and extra performance from the PS4 version is completely worth it
Some of the changes you've seen (in particular the path and rock placements) might be due to the dynamic path system that's in the game. In connected areas, paths form where other Players have travelled. You probably could've seen similar changes when comparing two different PS4 players maps with each other.

Fantastic release. Also, it's great that the quality mode is not capped to 30fps because it's already very close to a locked 60, and that means when Sony adds VRR or when the PS5 pro is released, people will be able to enjoy that mode without waiting for a patch.
The world geometry changes you see are for two reasons: any changes to the (walkable) ground geometry are due to your gameplay; the more you traverse a route, the more beaten down it gets; rocks disappear, ground textures change, and eventually you have a totally flat dirt road. This is especially noticeable when driving vehicles repeatedly on the same route. This was present in the base game. The mountain ridge that looks different was presumably remodeled because this previously inaccessible area now has missions in it.
God I hope so it's somewhat embarrassing that the PS5 has nearly been out for a full year and still no VRR support. Great machine but sony need to sort that shit out would make "Quality modes" a lot more feasible.
An important point to note here, the engine they've used - Decima - is the same engine Horizon uses. If the game looks already this stunning, then I will be speechless when Forbidden West launches in Feb 2022.

If you’ve got a 120 fps capable television set then you can widen the Vrr range with low Frame rate compensation which allows Vrr to work with frame rates as low as 20 fps
I really think they should have an option to have just the cutscenes in ultra wide whilst using quality mode since most of the framerate dips are in cutscenes. It would also make the cutscenes look more cinematic

The ultrawide quality mode seems like such an ideal way to play the game. Clarity of the native 4K version, pretty much locked 60 fps performance, wider FOV, and the game looks even mire cinematic. Other developers should take notes.
At 6:37 the swapping of the rock details is actually a geographical reality because of the erosion caused by the flow of the river in the outer curvature thus smoothening the rocks while the inner stays more protected. That there is some extreme attention to details.
The uncapped 4k quality is great news and I hope more games adopt this as an option. It means that a PS5 pro or ps6 can run it flawless at 4k. Future proof!
Not really... Death Stranding is old gen console (PS4 era) Making an old gen game run on 4k (60 fps0 is easier than making a new gen game with native 4K & 60 fps (newer engines have heavier hit to performance like Shadows, lights, filters..etc) The best thing can a new games is a dynamic 4K at 60 fps (1400p to 1800p)
For those of you arguing over the interpretation of the ancient scriptures (my comment), here is the gist: - By uncapped, I mean that it's not 30 fps limited and can go up until 60. - if a game released today with a flawless (good frame pacing) 30 fps and has an option to uncap it to aim for 60, it means that if doesn't achieve it in today's systems, it can in the future
I was still amazed when I played DS on my PS4 amateur. Now the ultrawide quality mode on PS5 with the clarity of the native 4K version, locked 60 fps performance, wider FOV with even more cinematic look combined with the immersive DualSense features sounds incredible.

@@raios-rogueboss-slayer4179 True, but have you noticed it, they don't show comparisons between Xbox and PS5 the same way they showed comparisons in this video between PS5 and PC? Cause when something looks obviously better on PS5, (which are many games by now, but DF never gonna tell this or make an item about) they are not allowed to show or talk about it. So if you see a comparisson between PS5 or Series X, it's always biased, instead when the Xbox wins, then they write in the title: An Xbox advantage, while in reality - hello earth - it still looks worse on the Xbox. I see trough everything they do. Why is that? I have these antennae, which warn me to pay attention when anything manipulated comes my way. Be it trough language, written language or theater. I believe it's some kind of survival-meganism. I'm always in a relaxed state, don't have to act and am who I am. My intuition warns me when something is off. I trust on it, or learned to trust in it. They should include an "Ultrawide for Cutscenes" option. It seems like that's the only place where Quality Mode significantly dips, and it used to be the norm to switch to more cinematic ratios during cutscenes anyway.
There's a few areas late game with many BTs around that might impact the frame rate too. Although the cutscene option certainly wouldnt hurt, you would probably still have some performance dips right when you need the game playing at its best.

8:20 Just got around to playing on the PC, apparently anisotropic filtering doesn't work or is stuck on low settings on some systems. Nvidia users can rectify this by forcing AF in drivers, while AMD GPU owners aren't so lucky, as forcing AF in Radeon Settings simply doesn't work in DX12 titles. Pretty glaring omission if you ask me, wouldn't call that a stellar release, especially since it's been over a year and 505 admits that they know about it in a response I got from them.

Partially. The goal of The Order 1886 was to have a cinematic look but still had narrow FOV. Here it is for the wider field of view to enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
Love the variety of visual/performance modes we've been seeing in PS games lately. The 40hz Ratchet and Clank mode, 60fps w/ RT, and now ultrawide mode. Such a great way to save performance while keeping the game looking crisp and even giving more information.

Vrr isn’t capable of making a game a solid 60 fps as instead what it does it take a game which targets 60 fps but can’t sustain that locked frame rate and so whenever the frame rate drops below 60 fps that’s when Vrr kicks in and ensures the game still feels smooth even when it’s not running at 60 fps and usually Vrr is able to work on most television sets between 48 fps to 60 fps and or if You’ve got a 120 hz panel then US kalt you’ll have a Vrr range of 48 fps to 120fps and then above and beyond that if you’ve got a 120 hz capable television then you can usually take advantage of low frame rate compensation which widens the Vrr range significantly so yea that’s pretty much how it works but like I said Vrr doesn’t increase frame rate at all but instead simply ensures smooth performance when the frame rate drops below 60 fps
It's funny, I enjoy Digital Foundry coverage of this Game when they talk Graphics more than the actual Game itself. Not saying it's bad, just wasn't for me when I tried it out : )

A great analysis for a great game. @@billybadass7718 In reality, if you've already beaten the PS4 version and plan on buying the upgrade, why even bother transferring your save? Experience it fresh again with all the new stuff added gradually to your arsenal, that's what I'll be doing. One thing I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned: is the budget for structures increased in the PS5 version? I'd imagine it's possible, that was one of the biggest flaws of the PS4 version imo, it's what made me stop playing.

There's also the point @7:40
Is there actually an upgrade here on this aspect?
At last! Something more tangible than frame rate and resolution, no way I'd pay for an upgrade that just does frame rate and resolution...but improved water, greater geometric detail, more foliage, ray tracing...thats when I'll open the wallet!

Thank you for the excellent review, John. I have settled on going with the ultrawide mode for the mostly 60 fps presentation and increased FOV based on your analysis. I think this offers a best-of-both worlds experience on PS5.
Seems that is the most balanced mode. I too will go for this mode whenever I get to the game.
They redid it completely, look at the ElAnalistaDebits comparison video.

Making an old gen game run on 4k (60 fps0 is easier than making a new gen game with native 4K & 60 fps (newer engines have heavier hit to performance like Shadows, lights, filters..etc)
The best thing can a new games is a dynamic 4K at 60 fps (1400p to 1800p)
For those of you arguing over the interpretation of the ancient scriptures (my comment), here is the gist:
- By uncapped, I mean that it's not 30 fps limited and can go up until 60.
- if a game released today with a flawless (good frame pacing) 30 fps and has an option to uncap it to aim for 60, it means that if doesn't achieve it in today's systems, it can in the future

So if you see a comparisson between PS5 or Series X, it's always biased, instead when the Xbox wins, then they write in the title: An Xbox advantage, while in reality - hello earth - it still looks worse on the Xbox.

I'm definitely going too grab this on release. It seems to be the best version of this last generation game. Looks good
This is why I prefer reviews by DF rather than IGN for example.
DF goes into detail and I love it.
Agreed, IGN sucks!
Great review. But I'm surprised you didn't mention the water improvements, it's a dramatic change even over the PC version.
I don't know how you look at the PC version. But it has noticeable stuttering during gameplay and cutscenes and this is still not patched (and it's not due to gamepad, that was fixed). And I'm not playing on the bucket with nails.
Detractors say Death Stranding is a walking simulator and it is that but not in the way they expect.
It simulates terrain and obstacles in the world work really well and it is a platformer of some sort.
I bought it when it first came out. I still haven't finished! The terrain/traversal aspect of the game is great, but a bit frustrating in a vehicle? I don't think I'll upgrade the game to PS5 (only got one this week).
The fact it's literally a progression of the concept of "platformers" and how it went over their heads is really aggravating.
It's the grand Turismo of walking simulators. It's awesome!
Anyone who hasn’t played this. Definitely take this opportunity to get it done. Probably my favourite game of the last console generation.
Aah the ps5, such a beast of a hardware for 499. Hopefully I'll be able to get it soon
@CJ P. Yes it is, but im more interested in the ps5 for it's first party amazing games you know they are my thing lol
@CJ P. No they're very close. The PS5 pulls ahead of the SX in many titles and occasionally vice versa.
Ps5 is also 400 dollars.
@CJ P. you mean the tools.. and your wrong more multiplatform game perform better on ps5 than the xsx..
@CJ P. If you are new to DF, then you don't know they are pro Xbox.
Decima Game engine is so damn good! 👏
I’d like to add that I started a new game and switched between the widescreen quality mode and the performance mode literally once and got the visual glitch that John is talking about lol
I love Kojimas work, he takes care in anything he dose, even for a simple upgrade like this they took care
I upgraded my PS4 disk copy for only £5 just now, what a great price, and I got the full ps5 version with the bonus content and new content, btw I'd you're wondering about the haptic feedback, ITS STUNNING.
Just playing the prologue on PS5 since I skipped it on The pro, maaan this game is a looker. And I’m playing in quality mode. Kojima did a good job on this one graphically.
So Ultra-wide is basically doing The Order: 1886. Interesting.
Also the evil within.
Partially. The goal of The Order 1886 was to have a cinematic look but still had narrow FOV. Here it is for the wider field of view to enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
13:39 Am I losing my mind, or is the cargo on his back rendering transparent?
it is, it gets transparent on combat situations, so the cargo doesn’t cover a BT or an enemy
@@PanzerSAMURAI Much appreciated!
My backlog hates me lol 🤣
This is why DF is the best. Mentioning the redone terrain and graphical differences, something that NO OTHER REVIEW did on ALL of metacritic!
Love the variety of visual/performance modes we've been seeing in PS games lately. The 40hz Ratchet and Clank mode, 60fps w/ RT, and now ultrawide mode. Such a great way to save performance while keeping the game looking crisp and even giving more information.
I kind of dislike it. Just give me a standard, with maybe a higher res option for those people who don't care about framerates (they exist, weirdly). Wish we'd left it behind last gen.
@@jcardboard well you're in luck, there's options. What are you even trying to say?
@@arbiter- Likely the cliché, "I play on console to avoid all those settings like on PC. I just want the developer to give me one good setting and let me play"-type of sentiment.
That's fine, but we're way past those days now.
And fundamentally options are good.
John is the only person that I watch in DF. he is honest and above all a gamer.
Phenomenal work dear lord.
DualSense is gonna be so good with this one.
Dualsense features are supported on PC too, fun fact ❤
Bought this on PC forever ago but never got around to actually starting it. Gonna be doing that tonight now lol
Does VRR now make it a solid 60 fps in quality mode?
Not saying it's bad, just wasn't for me when I tried it out : )
@Game Master Sometimes I have to retry a Game a few times before I feel it's vibe : ) Have you enjoyed the Game yourself?
@@GamingMyWholeLife I enjoyed Death Stranding's bespoke delivery mechanics and now enjoying this bespoke tech review.
@@weaverquest The Bespoke difference makes all the difference
But they don't say: it looks nice.
@Game Master I feel it's one of those Games where you have to play it while your not also playing other games, so we don't get distracted, lol.
@11:44 shows Quality mode has better shadows than ultrawide quality
While a very worthy remaster / director’s cut, the Save Transfer conditions will likely be a factor that will make me reconsider getting the game. I still have my PS4Pro hooked up but the fact that I’d have to close out any orders before I can export my save is ridiculous. This will be a problem too for people who already sold or gave away their PS4s. I hope this gets patched.
I’d imagine you can download the ps4 version on the ps5 and close out the orders but yeah it does seem more frustrating than it needs to be
Wasnt a Problem for me stop crying guys
I did the export on my PS5 and it worked fine. But I didn't have any open orders at the time.
Digital Foundry the water physics has been improved too on the PS5, it looks so real.
