Does Magne-Traction Turn Ice Into Powder?

- Snowboarding can take you to some awesome places, and sometimes the snowpack can be a little unpredictable. It isn't uncommon to find grippy corduroy groomers and sheets of ice casually spread out throughout a single run, or even have conditions change from powder to firm icy snow when exploring off-piste. A snowboard featuring Magne-Traction can help you keep your riding under full control when these situations sneak up on you, and don't have any negative side effects off of icy terrain; it just gives you more grip. The wavy edge isolates your weight onto 5-7 points along the edge in firm conditions, effectively allowing you to claw the snow and significantly decrease your chances of losing edge hold. You will find the most aggressive form of Magne-Traction on all-mountain and freeride snowboards, while finding mellower variations (5 less extreme waves vs 7) for more casual and freestyle oriented snowboards. Let me know what your thoughts are on the tech down below, thanks for watching.

Got mine already! Thanks TJ!
@@allanrocha4647 thanks man!
That is not icy conditions. That is a good powder day in the east coast
This is why skiing the East Coast is not really a goal most of us have,.......Just sayin'
@@timruth8767 It aint the goal for us either but its what we got.
Exactly
Lmao.... accurate
DUST ON CRUST!!
I own a Lib Tech Stump Ape and I can recommend magne-traction. It turns hardpack into soft snow. When on ice, you can feel the board clawing and really trying to help you get grip on the ice instead of the edge just wanting to wash out on you with a regular edge. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a normal board without magne-traction, but I feel that it really helps you stay in control no matter what the conditions are.
Solid video edit on this one. If you could make similar videos on different profiles or technology from different companies that would be epic.
Superb flowing presentation TJ.......one of your best for sure.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I’ve got a 2017 Spacecase and loving it. It turns quick in the trees and really holds in steeper ice sections
Was at revy a couple weeks ago, pretty cool to see you guys riding down close to the same lines I took when I was there. - from the east coast! N.S. Canada
Great info, snowboarding and views! Thank you
Thanks
When you're such a fan of Snowboarding, you feel your heart ache not being out there.
Video is 100% True. I have a 2021 Libtech Skunk Ape 170UW and a Stump Ape 163W. Both stick to Ice and you feel the control on hard terrain. Great Boards.
Love Andreas' surfy style on the Orca. Makes that thing look as fun as it probably is!
Haha awesome! It’s a super fun board
Awesome review Man!!!
I love the M-T on my Jones. I spent 6 days on ice/hard-pack and it totally saved me!
I love my GNU Carbon Credit, I'm not sure if I can ever really go back. Love the Magne-Traction. Mervin Manufacturing for life.
I got the vario power sidecut from Never Summer and its so good. Like Kevin said you have so much more confidence on ice with some extra grip
Do you guys find riding on icy conditions really eats up the wax on your board and causes epic base burn faster? I’m on a libtech box knife with a mellow mag and I definitely notice it and when I jumped to a TRS with a more pronounced mag it was like carving with a scalpel thru ice/hard snow.
I've been riding the T.Rice pro horsepower for the past 3 years and the board just rips down any terrain because of that magna traction. What's awesome about it is, the faster you go, the more confidence it gives you. It just holds edges like no tomorrow. Lib is making some incredible boards, highly recommend that brand. Just for reference I'm using that board with union SL bindings and it compliments the board perfectly.
Awesome! The 7 point mag has some pretty insane grip. Glad to hear you enjoy it
Hey TJ, your making it so hard to buy a new board, im loving everything your riding and demoing. But there are 3 board that are in my head that im interested in that you haven't ridden this season and want to know if you are going to ride/test them. 2 are Lib Tech boards the E-Jack and Jamie Lynn Dagmar (use to ride Jamie Lynn models in the past and love to see the difference now) the other is the 2019 Warpig (has it changed other than design).
Y'all need to try out the gnu billygoat. I've got that board in a 164 and I love it so much.
Ever notice that their camber boards have a more of mellow magne traction than the reverse cambered ones?
what's up Andreas?! i want your board. wish i pulled that trigger when Evo restocked.
Watching Andreus ? ride is awesome. So smooth. Those butters look so effortless
What butters....?
Sorry still learning the names of manoeuvres.. his switch turns /butters/180s? are smooth
First time I tried magna traction I only had to ride 200' to know it was a game changer. Whenever I talk to someone on the lift who has a magna traction board, they say the say thing. It gave them more confidence and instantly improved their riding.
Hey TJ, nice videos as always.
Any new comment about the Burton Step On system now that some time has pass? Is it worth it?
It's worth it.
I have a lib tech TRP, been in the French alps this week, ice/compact snow no more 😃 best board I have had, just doesn't hold the wax long, not as fast as my burton custom x
i just picked up my 1st MagTrac ,,, new Orca.. HOW do you tune the Mag ???? Cheers
Picked up the new Lib Tech Travis Rice Pro. Thing definitely feels a lot stickier along the edges. But ice is still something you're gonna want to navigate with caution.
T-Rice Orca 159 with 13(us) Burton photon boots. Do you Think the board Would be wide enough?
I Got a tiny bit of Heel and toe drag on the 159 yes. Greats
the Orca is 26.7cm at the waist, you should be fine
In my opinion MT helps a lot in skidded turns, which you often call "carving". It's not actually carving, the board is skidding a bit, especially on hardpack or ice. I ride for over 10 years, here in Poland/Europe, and the Alps, very often on ice, 30-40 days in season but started to do a "real" carving just o month ago. It is a complete different experience and like many mates here have said - camber is the best solution for this. And yes - you can actuallny really carve on ice with a little bit of right technique. But... I still love my T.Rice HP and other, softer boards when it comes to freestyle riding. This is great in snowboarding, that it comes in so many different styles :)

Hi guys. Could you do a comparison between the T Rice Pro to the Orca please? Looking to get one or the other, for freeriding, groomers, ice and powder. Which one would you choose?
Just get the orca
GNU full Rocker with Mag is so much fun!
I love mervin boards, mag is great, but I just have to laugh about how your claiming to ride ice when you're sinking in powder. If you wanted to do a real test you should have come out to the east coast, we can show you icy conditions.
so true east coast snowboarders are so much tougher
To cite Ryon Knapton (which sums up my experience): EVERY time I've ridden a board that deviated from having a smooth sidecut, it absolutely under-performed vs. a traditional sidecut with sharp edges
So. Knapton said magne traction underperformed or not? ????
@@ozz3790 i don’t like it
did i miss important news from the live stream on @snowboardprocamp?
The Nitro Diablo, a board that never seems to be reviewed by anyone, has "power pods" located at the contact points that seem to resemble the idea of magnetraction. Would they work as well?
Nitro Drop Out too - I really want to get an idea of how that rides on iced up groomers
That's more like the system used by Arbor, good, but not as good as magnetraction. MT has more contact points.
Magne traction !!! I like it
(mellow) Magnetraction is actually the reason i bought a Jones Mountain Twin. Throughout last season i rented a GNU Smart Pickle. My very first ride with it was in a glacier while i had stomach flu so i was NOT feeling well, at all. Still, i was able to kick some minor ass also thanks to MT, i never fell once..
But after the season i wanted a different kind of board, with a different camber. I tried other GNUs but in the end the Jones was the one for me. By the way TJ your review of the Jones made me decide for it :)
I own a gnu headspace and rode a mountain twin half this season. Then I got a Jones flagship... Man, I'm never going back to the mountain twin, this board gets you anywhere, whatever the speed.
Thanks Jack glad to hear
I got a banana magic and I LOVE the magnetraction with BTX! I think MTX is useful for a banana style board, but it is taken to the next level when you get that cam/rock going. I find you can carve much better than any camber board on banana magic. ive had other MTX boards and it was good but not the same. I havn't ridden an orca yet but im thinking that might be a game changer.
Off topic question but I saw that you learned how to snowboard in NC and majored in mathematics. I was wondering where you went to school and also where you learned how to ride. I'm currently in my 5th year at Appalachian State majoring in mathematics and just started to learn snowboarding this season at App Ski Mtn. Thought it was crazy about our common background lol.
That is really cool to hear man, my degree is from Appalachian State and I mainly rode at App Ski Mtn as well. I hope Dr. Rhoads and Kosmala and all the rest are still there. I really enjoyed the years I had at App, good luck with your degree!
@@BoardArchive Haha yes, they're still here. I actually have Rhoads for calc 3 this semester. He's a great teacher, but with a strange wardrobe.
I like the tech of additional contactpoints (my Rossignol One LF and former Westmark Rocker), but I hate the Steak knife vs butter knife comparison. It is just not right. There are sharp knives with plain edges out there, you know, e.g. all sorts of kitchen knives. The Steak knife has more cutting surface and in parts more cutting ability. The main advantage though is, that the steak knife edges in the archs don't dull that fast, cause they don't cut on the ceramic plates in restaurants.
I have a gnu with magna traction and it really does cut the ice. When I initiate a heelside turn I can really slam my heels down and the edge just cut into the crud
it's definitely noticeable
Not sure if you did use it because Kevin so tall but you should get the super long pole with the karma grip. I think it's the best footage on you channel.
Thanks for the feedback Buck! I was using a 40" pole in this video
Ya!!!
wish you guys were there when we had more snow
As good as it seems, my experience is telling me that it barely makes a difference from a normal "butter knife" edge.
Does the magna traction tend to hook more when you butter? That always scared me away from the tech.
No I don’t think it does. I really enjoyed butters on my Headspace with the mellow mag.
Not at all mate.
What camera do you use? this picture is incredible
This was with the GoPro 7
Can someone clarify for me: 'full' magne-traction is '7 point'? Does that mean 7 contact points in total (so the 2 normal ones, then 5 additional ones along the side-cut), or 7 additional contact points (so 9 total)?
7 Point means 7 total including the 2 normal ones
@@BoardArchive Thanks!
i love magne-traction on my gnu from day one. But i still can't understand why not every snowboard has it? I, personaly, haven't found any downshifts of magne-traction - have u?
I been riding magna Trac since 2008 and it scrubs a lot of speed in turns and speed checks for jumps. It's almost to much clawing. So that's my downside. And I don't buy lib anymore because of quality issues.
Hm, that totally make sense. I was always afraid of speed and rode slowly, but recently decided to overcome my fear: downloaded a tracking app, on my normal ride it showed 30 km/h, so i've started gaining speed, got 35, 40, 45, 50, 55. But then i just stuck on 58.2 and couldn't top it anymore, maybe that's because of that magne 'feature' you talked about (more likely because i'm too sissy =) )
And what about lib quality issues?
thanks!
Dmitriy Lyakhov that’s still pretty slow... riding powder or groomers? Groomers will help with speed and semi flat basing with no speed checks
@@RussianMayhem I got the brand new t rice orca before Kevin even got it I hit one tree and my board completely started delaminating the base was separating from the top of the board I sent it back to lib tech and they told me that they won't give me a new board but they'll fix what's wrong with this one which doesn't really do it for me if it's peeling open it's going to keep peeling open. so I went with a never Summer insta Gator they've been making the same style board like the orca for 7 years and they buy more expensive materials that cut profit out of their board which is better for us
@@Shitty796 sad story, though it's good that you broke your board and not your bones... Hope everything will be fine with your current board!
TJ awesome video, thanks for the review! I truly value your opinion on snowboard equipment over anyone else out there!
Now you have really got my attention on Magne-Traction. I've been considering upgrading to a to a Burton camber from my trusty NeverSummer Heritage (Rocker/Camber) www.evo.com/outlet/snowboards/never-summer-heritage-x-snowboard-2015 . I have a few in mind that I've demo'd, and I love next year's 2020 Burton Hometown Hero. But your Magne-Traction review in this vid has really got me thinking differently.
My NeverSummer's Vario Power Grip does well on mostly all types of snow, it's a great all around board! For my riding style, but mostly just ride all mountain, bombing groomers, open bowls, and tree runs from time to time for the powder, and I don't typically ride the park, except maybe a few smaller jumps and only 50/50's on mild boxes. On most runs, I ride fast and aggressive and the N/S does a good job and really holds its edge well and stays stable at higher speeds. But it can occasionally wash out on hidden icy patches that "sneaks up on you", as you mentioned in the vid.
So hopefully that gives you enough info. What board would you recommend for my riding style? What do you think of the Burton HH, and if it has the tech to handle the icy stuff well too, or do you think I should give GNU or LibTech a try, and could have more fun on a board with 5-pt or even 7-pt Magne-Traction? Thanks in advance if you are able to get a second to respond, it would mean the world!
Keep killing it out there, you're an inspiration!
Thanks Josh I really appreciate that. I think that Magnetraction will offer noticeably more edge hold than the other technologies out there including Vario Powergrip, Frostbite, Grip Tech, you name it. I dont think it will bother you with what you are doing in the park, and for the riding style you mention I wouldn't really focus on getting a "freestyle" board. I think if you are looking for Magnetraction something like the E-Jackknife or TRS from Lib Tech could be good options, maybe something like the Jones Mtn Twin as well or something along a similar style as those boards.
Sorry to "skiier" hijack this thread, but I run 2 pairs of Libs, both Wreckreates. Favs are my 100s in 188cm, close seconds are my 90s in 179cm. Magnetraction is totally an understatement. I'm an aggressive skier with over 30 years of experience and I've never had a ski that performed as well as these. Never lost an edge, even on the most brutal, icy terrain. These boards are the goods.
ITS A GIMMICK!!!! Nothing handles ice better than camber! I live in KENTUCKY!!! Ice is everyday, I've tried magnetraction, frostbite edges... etc, NOTHING will handle real ice like a quality camber board.
True ! And the harder/wider the board, the better it holds.
I have the Lib Box Knife which is camber plus the magnetraction. It dominates in the ice and hard pack.
@@fizzled95 look at snowboard racing sports, slalom, boarder cross, alpine racing, all of them try for the most icy course possible, none have magnetraction.
@@fizzled95 that being said, if you're not carving ALL of your turns, then some sort of serrated edge will probably feel more "grippy" on skidded turns.
Ok, but your comment about camber.
Is there a downside of magnetraction or you think every board should have it?
It gives more grip on a rocker board but on a camber board it doesnt change that much and ive ridden a magne traction and it really isnt a game changer. if its on a board you want, sure, go for it but dont get a board you dont really want just because it has magne traction
If you like hybrid boards, Mervin cannot be beat. Magnetraction makes them way more usable. Sharpening the side edge is a pain in the ass!
Being on the East coast, it seems like Magne-Traction is a no-brainer. I do head out West sometimes. Is there any downside to Magne-Traction?
This is what ive been wondering, also some people have said that camber is just better so im not sure what is placebo and what is correct
Is it still possible to sharpen the edges yourself even with the magnetraction?
yep, just use a shorter file. like this simple one from One Ball Jay: www.evo.com/tools/one-ball-jay-magne-traction-edge-sharpener or FK Multi Edge Tool with a 30mm stone/file (or a longer file placed vertically): www.tognar.com/fk-multi-edge-tuning-tool/ Also the FK SKS Edge Trick is good too: www.tognar.com/fk-sks-edge-trick-deburring-tool/
@@petehelme7714 Makes sense, thanks!
I have never seen that dude with his coat zipped up. Awesome lol.
Also a dumbfuck for not wearing a helmet in icey conditions.
Wish you guys actually tested magnetraction on ice. We're talking that dark grey stuff you get in Ontario, actual ice. The kind you can see through. Magnetraction is awesome but it doesn't allow you to carve on actual ice. I find it has saved my ass many times on extremely slippery slopes, but it doesn't compare to a camber when it comes to turns. It doesn't feel as natural and as weird as it sounds, it feel like it takes away from effects of having a tighter sidecut.
I'm researching boards, what do you think of a camber board with magnatraction? Thanks for any advice.
seems fun
Are there any downsides to magnetraction from a beginner aspect or general ?
Revelation1191 probably easier to catch an edge
Some people don’t like it in the park but honestly I haven’t had any issues. It’s a bit harder to tune your edges. That’s about it
Oohh awesome thanks
Mervin boards (Lib Tech specifically) is pretty much all I ride now. The magne-traction is no joke and you can generally ride a smaller board for your weight.
why would you want to ride a smaller board ? I just went from a 157cm mid/hard flexed board to a 165cmW hard one. It's like comparing a scooter and a GP bike. Unless I want to ride not using any muscle in my body, I'm never going back to shorter/narrower boards.
@@elp1291Smaller boards are more maneuverable in trees and in the park.
el p i’m with you there. if you’re going for carves, a longer board will always ride smoother. i’m 5’8” and 150lbs and still growing and i just bought a capita doa in a 158
158 and your 5'8 that's crazy. I ride a 151 ride kink I'm 6ft 170lbs. But I'm also a park rat that rides everything. 6 hrs in the park then 2-4 more in the groomers for just fun runs and ground play everyday of the week. Except rest days here and there. Could never ride a longer board like that
james i understand that. i’m just mid growth spurt and the season is almost over so i figured by next season it would fit better. i just came off riding a 156 when i was like 5’2” and 130lbs so i’m used to big boards😂
could you tell me what the disadvantages of magne traction are? If it would have just pros, every board would have it I imagine
Mervin owns the patent so other companies have to lease it from them to use the technology. There are a lot of alternatives out there, but Magnetraction provides the MOST grip in my opinion
Thanks for your answer, but my question was not in comparison to other ice-grip-technologies, I meant it in comparison to „normal“ edges without any of these technologies
Its a good debate to have...magne traction v trad camber. I ride Mount Hutt in NZ which gets skied off very quick on the groomers leaving blue ice without a hint of dust. Tried the T Rice HP pro for a couple of yers til it went flat on me and went to a vimana camber board and had a big improvement on true ice grip....just saying! Also ride a Capita Merc which doesnt grip as well on true ice.... go figure
Does Magnetraction cause you to catch edges easier?
No, it looses carving abilities and more money out of your pocket for snake oil.
I don’t think it does
Ive got grip trech and its a life saver on icy conditions... not sure what to do on the next purchase though, move up to magna??
Hummmm

Can the headspace carve well?
It does carve well, although it isn't especially wide. It is Asym and is a great all-mountain/freestyle snowboard
Thanks I have size 10.5 boots so would. It be better if I get the wide? (Am still growing)
Ps if your ever on the east coast try to come to magic mountain really has that local mountain feel but still has the best and steepest runs in vt
i was thinking of getting the headspace but just bought the capita doa last week because it seemed like a better all mountain board. i know the graphic might look not as fun, but i feel like if you’re going for park as well as carving, it’s a better option. that’s just me though.
I own a headspace, and I really like it. But I gotta tell you, do not get this board for carving.
First reason, it's not really wide, I have a 155cm board, wear size 10US boots and can't lay down carves *at all*. It's boot-out town.
Second reason, it's way too flexible to carve with any speed.
This board is a very good pick if you are looking for a chill board or a butter board, but *not for a carving board*.
If you want a board that handles carving, speed, air and pow, go for a jones flagship. Not the best freestyle board as it's directional but the aggressiveness makes up for it.
Magnet traction - how does it work?
it may or may NOT turn ice into powder//// WITH SO MANY edges catching the snow, this CANT BE a type board for beginners with so many additional contact points. What do u guys think????
My Orca arrives 11/29!!
Glad to see another metallica fan snowboarder
Which is more aggressive: grip tech or magne traction?
magne for sure, more serrated contact points... i think its 7 vs 2
@@inmotion_snow according to the logic put inside of MT technology, less points - more pressure on each of them - better grip. So this is disputable
@@AlexanderKontsevoy interesting!!
Mag gives more precise grip for sure. Grip tech is in 2nd place tho
@@BoardArchive I'm sure it does. Just wanted to focus that it is not correct to compare technologies by simply comparing numbers
If you Really want to test a magnet traction you have to do it in a real ice ! Day ! Under bite is better in my opinion ! I have riding ice in Sweden for many years ! This is a country with all Cain the ice terrain !
That’s a powder day for us east coast riders 😂
Right?! Bunch of spoiled bitches...
Magnatraction is a game changer for me in ALL conditions.Anyone think of any cons?
Never ridden a board with magne-traction, but I heard they can be catchy when not on firm or icy conditions.
@@RobGams The whole point of magna-traction is they're not catchy at all. I've ridden one for over 10 years. Nothing compares.
@@donmueller626 Agreed whole heartedly, that coupled with new design technology has made my Orca easily the best board ever by miles.Nothing's even close.
I've been testing out the brand new lib TRS HP last december, and yeah it's super grippy on hard/icy snow. The only drawback i can see is that it took me a couple hours to get used to the grip, i mean there were times i didn't expect the board to catch the slope so brutaly puting me right inside the trajectory and so creating unbalance, but once your body learned the behavior of the board, nothing compares. I'm gonna have one next year. BTW it was my first time on a magne traction board. I don't know if it's more difficult to sharpen the edges, but it's not something you often have to do.
@@trythisdude Thanks for your reply dude.Interesting point raised here, the trajectory from traditional edges to a superior tech is definitely noticeable.Who wants to go back?

Probably, not talking about this one
@@SidiNic I am asking about this specific one. Thanks
Looks like hard crust/packed powder. I can literally skate down some trails at Whiteface Mtn 😅😅........
Magne is official.
Hey! Could you also explain the possible downsides of Magne-Traction? For what kind of conditions, riding styles etc it isn't the best option?
MT edges are harder/more expensive to maintain. Sharpen your simple radial sidecut and it will give you that grip and +100 points to carving
Also the feeling of cutting through snow is a bit different. without MT you feel like on a well oiled rail, with MT you feel like being on a sawblade. It just feels a bit less glidy.
Magne Traction is definitely a good choice for Revelstoke!
Magna traction isn't as effective as a camber board on the ice in the french alps. They slide out so much easier as I know from experience!
One thing is for sure - serrated edge is a bitch to tune.
