    In this video Kevin and I are snowboarding up at Thredbo Resort in Australia and take a moment to talk about effective edge. Effective edge is a spec that you will see for every snowboard, and is the part of the board that gives you most of your control, particularly on groomed or hard pack snow. I hope this video helps to give you a better idea of what this number on the spec sheet means, how it effects the ride of the board, and how it can vary from board to board. Let me know any questions or anything you have to add in the comments below, thanks for watching.

      Board Archive so could you share your advice for recommended board lengths based on weight? Is there a magic reference table we should all be referring to? And does Board flex/stiffness also play a factor?

    • @PhaseSkater
      @PhaseSkater 6 лет назад +5

      What if you plan on losing weight cuz you’re chubby or adding muscle if you’re skinny? Or if it’s a colder day and you’re wearing heavier gear? What about flex? Wouldn’t a softer board be easier to move if it’s still longer?

    • @whishoop
      @whishoop 6 лет назад +9

      Josh Archer most boards will have a cheat sheet attached with rider recommended weights with regard to board length. It's not the gospel but will give you a size range to work from. You can be over or under the ranges but as long as your not a million miles away the board will perform as intended. Most sizes that are close to each other will have a similarity in weight range so you can choose a board in relation to the terrain or way you like to ride. Flex pattern or stiffness will definitely play a part in selection as well

    interesting fact....
    i am 195lbs - 5'8" been riding a 156/157 for a most day the last few years. have riddin up to a 161 (powder board from 1993 i was only 160lbs then) been on a 154 for a short board for my weight currently. recently though i rode a 146 or 147 just for shits and giggles.
    I LOVED IT!!! the most fun i have ever had a snowboard. was able to bomb the hill just as fast and just as in control as my longer boards. worked amazing in trees. best days i've had switch yet, and was not bad in 4-6" of powder. talk about breaking every weight rule in snowboarding!
    I am getting a 149 asap as a middle ground soon... oh, and in the park i felt much more in control than my 156. This season i am on day 30, last season i got just over 70 days.
    just thought your subs and readers might like to know that rules are for sure meant to be broken. don't not try something just because.
    thanks for the video guys and see ya on the mountain!

    I am 160cm (5"3) and i weight about 52-53kg (something along the lines of 115lbs) after a successful season where I could ride comfortably on a beginner's snowboard, I used several other (taller or heavier) people's boards, being completely unaware of the importance of the board's length and shape. Clearly the people I borrowed the boards from were also oblivious to this and couldn't understand why I was struggling so much. Their bindings were also not particularly good. I guess I am being punished for being so cheap and unwilling to spend too much money on gear. I snowboarded said entire season without goggles as well ^^" I have just purchased a second hand 142cm, twin tail, and hope for the best now. Because I couldn't do anything with those 152+ boards. Morality: pick your gear wisely or you'll catch edges continuously and start hating snowboarding altogether..

    Higher Effective edge means, more stable carving. It has some negative tolerance when your board has TBT or spoon technology. Effective edge can be also overall contact edge to snow, not exactly wider nose point of snowboard in this case

  • @darrendix5163

    Reverse camber, or "banana" and all of it's variations, my all time favorite is still C-1, but there's C-2, C-3, and all sorts of different camber designs now, will allow you to ride a shorter, lighter deck especially in powder. I've been riding Lib Tech since day one when people said, "Lib WHAT??" What's that? I always liked longer decks before banana, but the newest designs let you ride a "150's" size deck instead of a "160's" size deck no matter how tall or heavy you are. My favorite deck is STILL the C-1 El Nino by Lib Tech, 162, which is the longest running snowboard design ever by any company. The nose is bent all the way up, and it has a bit of camber at the tail where it counts as a directional deck. C-2 is great for switch, though, but when you are bombing it, you will ride regular.

    I watched the spec of the lib tech golden orca i wanted to buy recently and beside the lenght, spec were pretty similar between longer and shorter models, nothing noticable like 1-2mm of taper, etc. Decided to buy it since it was one day old and half the price, even though im 5'10/180lbs and the board is 153 im really impressed with its ridability. My other board still have their pros on some terrains like pow or long carving, but having a shorter board means less weight and quick edge to edge when going slow on uneven terrains like threes and icy sketchy trails. Its a good addition to my collection.
    Sooooo, dont let the specs stop you from going longer or shorter. when you have multiple board with different specs you kinda have more options depending on your program for the day and conditions.

  • @noptimized
    @noptimized 5 лет назад +2

    You’re actually mistaken in your description of running length, contact points and effective edge. The running length is the length of the board between the contact points (of the base) when the board is weighted. This becomes a little bit ambiguous on rockered boards, but nonetheless, the running length is not the entire length of the board, as you’ve explained.
    The effective edge is correctly identified as the distance between the widest part of the nose and the widest part of the tail (or the distance between the two ends of the edge radius), but this is independent of the contact points. Often you will see that a board’s effective edge is slightly longer than its running length, and this is because the widest parts of the nose and tail are actually beyond the base’s contact points.
    I hope this helps. It’s the best I can do without drawing pictures.

    • @rodrigosanchez4647
      @rodrigosanchez4647 3 года назад

      The profile type is important. We have to see board base. Real effective edge is the distance between contact points. Rocker boards have not real effective edge but this aspect should not be very popular today.

    Another great vid man!🤙🏼. So essentially, a shorter effective edge is good for powder and a longer effective edge is good for control and carving?

    • @Lauren-yn9ze
      @Lauren-yn9ze 6 лет назад +7

      I think it's more that a longer effective edge is good for groomers/park, and that effective edge is less important for powder because you don't use it, and as powder boards have those much bigger noses, they end up with shorter effective edge-lengths relative to their overall size.

    • @BoardArchive
      @BoardArchive  6 лет назад +7

      That's a bit of an oversimplification, a longer effective edge will give you more control on groomers since more of the boards edge is in contact with the snow. In powder the entire board is being used to float so that longer nose comes into play to stay ontop and the bend of the board, taper, and setback become more important factors than effective edge. Laurens summary there is pretty good! I just wanted to point out that there can sometimes be quite a difference between the overall length of the board and the effective edge with this video, and what difference that makes in the ride.

    Is the effective edge measured as a straight line from contact point to contact point, or along the curvature of the side-cut arc? If the latter, does the published effective edge length include the extra length provided by tech such as magne traction?

  • @jeremystig98
    @jeremystig98 5 лет назад

    For Beginners go with the rules and buy the right sized All-Mountain board for BEGINNERS! These board will feature a softer flex and will turn more easily. For intermediates and pros go and play around with sizes, flex, stance, effective edge. There are boards like the 167 Rossignol XV that rides like a much shorter board, but i wouldn't recommend this to beginners.

  • @nizam_mr
    @nizam_mr 6 лет назад +6

    So if we have 2 different board with same effective edge length, flex and profile but different total length size, they will probably feel/react the same in turns?
    So the extra tip is more for float usage and shorter is for weight savings?
    👍

    • @thurst0n
      @thurst0n 6 лет назад +1

      @ejump0 I think those two boards would feel/react almost identically on a groomer. Where you'll start to see difference is the longer board should provide more float in powder (really depends on the nose shape) and that the shorter board will be easier to do jump rotations.

I have a travis rice pro hp wide one I hate. Its a 164 i think; don't ride it enough to remember. I had custom graphic done for it so I won't sell it. I am on east coast so those powder days are not as often. I will say when we do get lots of heavy powder the that board is better then ripsaw. 95% of the time ripsaw is what I ride. It is very responsive and I don't get toe drag really. Probably because of how wide the board is on the ends.

      size is primarily based on weight, if you fall within several sizes based on weight the smaller size will be more flexy, maneuverable and easier to control (since all other things are equal) while the larger size will be more stable.

    Would it be stupid to size up? I’m small so I ride a 148, would it be stupid to go up to 152? I weigh 120 pounds

      If you're within the weight range you can totally size up. If you are looking at two difference sizes of the same board the larger size will be a bit stiffer and more stable, but slightly less maneuverable

      If you love going stupidly fast (like I do), you can gain additional stability at high speed by sizing up (and/or taking a stiffer board) at the cost of a more difficult ride at low speed.
      For example, my high speed board is a very stiff Custom X for which I am considered nearly 30 pounds bellow the Minimum recommended weight, (the guy at the shop where i bought it thought I was never gonna be able to use it) but it's an absolute dream for groomers. But I had to get myself a second board for tree runs and moguls, for which I downsized a bit because I wanted a much more nimble ride, but if I try to reach the same speed with it it just wobbles all over the place.

    • @BoardArchive
      @BoardArchive  6 лет назад

      Im around that height and I prefer sizes around 154 or 155 usually, but size is primarily based on your weight

      I'm 5 10 but I weigh 270 so I ride a 162 wide

    So the effective length of a batallion board is always less??

    • @BoardArchive
      @BoardArchive  6 лет назад

      No because the effective edge comes into play when you are carving and have the board "on edge" so the 3BT doesn't really impact that length
