Hello from Canada! Oh I know - it's so easy to glance over the radicalness of Manet and some of the other Realists given the work that would follow over the next few decades. And you're completely right - it's because our modern gaze! It's hard to look backward and put yourself in the place of someone viewing this for the first time.
