  • This piece is now permanently conserved in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, where it will be harder to mess with. The video seeks to provide an in depth tour of this very unusual and exceptional masterpiece, from a late period in the traditional decorative arts. As one can see, the masters were still working in the 1830s even if this time and certainly the following decades are mistrusted by serious collectors who avoid industrialized antiques that masquerade as art.
In the story of great furniture, mechanical or transforming desks are some of the most coveted pieces. This one is in Brazilian rosewood, mahogany, and fine inlays of holly wood over an oak frame. Jean-Christophe FISCHER was an important French master furniture maker who lived from 1779-1854. His works are on view in the northwest wing of the Louvre, and although obscure, they reveal some of the best of early 19th century furniture.
I hope this video will enhance your appreciation of furniture from the past, and that taking a closer look here will inform your own collecting if not at the very least entertain you for the evening!
Many thanks to all viewers and subscribers,

It's really great what you are doing with this series. There is so little video material online regarding high quality furniture. Love the videos!

Cole, you have such a great eye backed with an amazing amount of knowledge. Thanks for sharing and teaching the world with what is a driven passion of yours. You make learning FUN ! On a side note, i wouldn't be surprised if the curators of the new owners find a hidden compartment in the center section of the interior, between the two corner drawers. This artisan doesn't look like the type to let a wasted opportunity, {or space} get away from him.

I am very touched by your comment and do make a solid run, at the risk of seeming a bit nuts, at making these videos fun. We took all the drawers out of this thing and really really looked! But this is one of those pieces...seriously layered. Maybe a curator next century will find the secret compartment.

    Amazing Piece.
You really do a superb job explaining the piece.
I think you should do a show on TV.
Very few shows I can think of, except auction houses, talk about people who have used this quality of furniture in their homes.
You should, if possible, show the sold pieces in your clients homes.

Beautiful piece of furniture, but that sun!! I hope the windows are treated to block the uv rays that badly fade wood.

The sunlight on the wood had me wondering too - but I'm pretty sure with Myers & Monroe, UV precautions have been taken!

Wonderfully crafted... I'm in awe. Do the original plans for the desk exist? I would love to see the intricacies of the drawings as well. Please let me know if possible. As always, well done... brava!
