King's Mistress' Château: Pavillon de Musique de la Comtesse du Barry à Louveciennes!
Jeanne du Barry is one of the most exciting and infamous women in the History of France's old Regime. This stunning property nearby Paris was gifted to her by King Louis XV. It is currently available through the Denniel Brother's agency, Antiquaires en Immeubles, and it is thanks to them that this visit was possible. The original furniture from this place was inventoried by the Revolutionary commission and deemed too important to sell (by virtue of its quality it was considered national treasure). These works of decorative art are now dispersed throughout major national Museums.
This place was also the site of one of the larges jewel burglaries of the day. The discovery of such hidden jew...

Art Quality Antiques: 18th century French Buffet à Deux Corps (period furniture education)
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.3 месяца назад
A mid-18th century publication quality port piece (in solid mahogany which would arrive to Europe via the ports). This presentation cabinet for fine plates and silver, a type of four doored armoire built in two tiers is often called a two-tiered buffet or buffet à deux corps. This particular piece, by virtue of its excellent design and execution, was published as a benchmark in the key text on ...
Louis Philippe French Antique Rosewood Armchairs circa 1835 (period furniture education)
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.4 месяца назад
This set of four rosewood armchairs is exemplary of fine domestic furniture circa 1835. These allow one to better understand furniture or decorative art which stylistically transitions between the Charles X period of the 1820s and the Louis Philippe period of the 1830s. The armchairs also conserve their original fabric which helps us to date them more precisely. Two side chairs also belong to t...
Circa 1700 museum quality Secretary: Mahogany Port Furniture (Flanders?)
Просмотров 2 тыс.4 месяца назад
Port furniture designates a special genre of artistic furniture made in ports during the 17th to the early 19th centuries. This genre is famous for being in solid exotic hardwoods which were available in relative abundance in port cities. Port furniture is also prized for the merit of its design and execution. The makers and the patrons in these bustling centers of trade had access to new ideas...

Welcome back to another video, featuring a publication quality work of decorative art from the time of King Louis XVIII (1815-24). The style of this time is generally referred to as "restoration" for the restoration of the Bourbon Monarchy in post-Napoleonic France. The term Louis XVIII is used rarely to specify pieces such as this from the early years of this period when fundamentally empire p...
French Empire Period Furniture ("Antiques" vs. Decorative Art), Jacob-Desmalter Bed circa 1825-30!
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.10 месяцев назад
The Empire style is one of the most memorable in Furniture history, certainly one of the boldest and most impressive, known for its stark neoclassicism. This rare mahogany "lit bateau" or boat bed, exemplifies late empire work (the evolution of the style after the fall of Napoleon into something more curvilinear and tropical). Pieces such as this reveal how furniture styles, this one like the R...

    See this furniture? French 18th century, 19th century, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Napoleon III. What happened? World War One is what happened. They blew away the trees, the oak, the walnut, the maple, they fired so many shells all over France and Europe, they killed the fine craftsmen all over Europe, from France, Biedermeier furniture, they destroyed the factories, killed the men by the millions, utterly destroyed the entire industry. They spent so much money on weapons and war, both world wars. Europe has never recovered. Now look at this modern furniture. It is not the germans fault, so many fine homes, so much fine furniture destroyed from those wars, the germans too have paid the price. Europe needs to be careful as multiculturalism cannot produce such fine furniture, no. Fine craftsmanship and design must be protected, not flooded and endangered, not given away to strangers. Wine barrels make no desk from French oak. The oak is more valuable than the wine. One cannot set their coffee upon a wine barrel in the morning and then go to work. War has cost Europe a terrible price, more than most know or understand. We must return to the past in order to go forward, we must plant and water the tree, we must build the furniture school, we must reproduce quality. Things must return to a finer day. I have an appreciation, I have a memory, I remember, I see fine things and remember a time and I am knowing the road to returning. LLXIIX77

    An amazing piece. However, what most captured my imagination in this video is your mention of the gothic as an anticlassical style. I see just what you mean, and don't mean at all to imply you're "incorrect", only that another interpretation of the form immediately sprung to my mind. I saw the columns as egyptian lotus columns, perhaps "vestigial" in some sense of the napoleonic egypt craze. That african track in turn made me consider the "alternate" interpretation of the gothic as a marriage, or intersection, between romanesque decorative art and islamic geometry as represented by the moorish style.... which eventually made me think the mirror, actually especially excluding the actual frame component, is overall quite reminiscent of Mughal architecture, the columns representing twin minarets, massive but rounded geometries adorned by delicate yet high contrast ornamentation....

      She was guillotined during the French Revolution, after keeping a low profile for years despite not supporting the monarchist side. She was robbed of the equivalent of 20 million euros and to recover the jewels, she published the huge amount of diamonds and jewels that had been stolen, the revolutionaries remembered her and went after her head because they wanted to eradicate everything related to the excesses of the monarchy.

    I have 2 French armoires and it's so sad that no one wants them any more. I've tried with auction houses and they are not sellable. It 's such a great loss of carpentry work and wood. I'm trying my best to salvage the wood and doors. Today younger generations do not have any space and move often and I understand this. They would rather have fake wood furniture painted grey or white or denim blue.

    What a beautiful piece of furniture! It is simple, almost plain but the beauty of the mahogany and the delicate carving makes it stand out. It is easy to become dazzled and almost spoiled by the beautiful, elaborate and sometimes over-the-top furniture produced for the royal family and the high-ranking nobility. That kind of furniture is clearly decorative, no wonder the French called that kind of luxurious furniture "meuble d´apparat". BTW, why is this piece of furniture called a "buffet" and not an "armoire"? I always believed that the word "buffet" applied to what in English is known as a "sideboard". Also, this piece of furniture corresponds to the definition of "armoire" given by the Larousse dictionary: "Meuble de rangement, plus haut que large, subdivisé intérieurement par des tablettes et fermé par une ou plusieurs portes (qui parfois portent une glace)" Thank you for this video. I wish you a nice weekend. Claudio.

    • @MyersMonroe
      @MyersMonroe 3 месяца назад

      Great question - originally these four doored armoires were called as such during the Renaissance (with a top corps either narrower or the same size as the bottom one). You could still call it an armoire à quatre portes, but by this time they became more associated with presenting meal service pieces and in any case the term for a while has been “buffet à deux corps.” Interestingly, as will be covered in other videos, the grandest two door armoires of this period were also for presenting silverware and plates (not for bedroom use) although we call them armoires and later in the 19th century they became true wardrobes for clothes.

    • @arslongavitabrevis5136
      @arslongavitabrevis5136 3 месяца назад

      @@MyersMonroe Thank you very much for the explanation. Inspired by your comment I decided to look at the origin of the word "buffet" Originally it was spelt "bufet" and it meant A) As a verb: Strike, slap someone B) As a substantive: Bench or sideboard. Both meanings are still valid. Interestingly the Germans also use the word "buffet" to designate a sideboard although they spell it "Büffet" but it is rather old-fashioned. There is also a proper German word for sideboard and is "Anrichte", from it derives the verb "anrichten" which means "To set/display the dishes on the sideboard" I am sorry I got carried away but I cannot help it. I am obsessive about the use of the correct words and their etymology. Regards
