Black gets grounded on the chassis. You can attach to the negative (black) terminal on the battery but chassis is better. The red is your 12v power which supplies power to the accessories, running through a fuse prior to the accessories
I’m sorry I’m lost I have a factory stereo and it’s connected to my amp but my amp stays on even when I turn the car off where can I add the toggle switch and where do I get the power to do that
Did you connect the amp to a constant 12v source? If you run it the through a source that is only activated through the ignition, it will only get power when the ignition switch is activated. You could also add an in-line toggle switch that will only send 12volts when the switch in “on”. Find the dedicated 12v line going to the amp and cut it. Add the toggle there, but make sure to add an in-line fuse prior to the voltage reaching the amp. This will protect the amp in the event of a power surge. The layout should be...12v source, in-line fuse, in-line toggle switch and finally the amp. Make sure you ground the amp on the chassis. Do not connect to an existing device’s ground.

If it’s wired directly to the battery without a toggle switch, it will constantly be getting power. You need to run it through an in-line fuse (and possibly a relay switch) BEFORE it hits the toggle switch. You need to be able to cut off the power when not in use.

In this case I don’t want to always have power going to the valve that closes or opens. Wouldn’t that burn up the motor? If so, how would I fix this problem?
fly n fury use a momentary switch, not a toggle. The power will be disengaged unless the button/switch is pressed. When the button/switch is let go, the power will be cut off again.
Phillips Vision I’ll try to keep this simple as I didn’t think about this earlier but I can’t hold the button in while I’m driving for a period of time. If holding the button in is open on the valve as soon as I let go of the button the valve would shut again or stay in that position? I need the valve to stay in that position and then on my next press of the button close the valve. How do I do that?
Phillips Vision I thought a toggle switch would always be supplying power. I need the valve to open and stop trying to keep it open. Same thing for close. I don’t want to burn up the motor if it’s always trying to make the valve move in one direction or the other. I hope that makes sense.

Can a switch like this work with current in reverse? I.e. could you connect a solar trickle charger to the switch then to the battery? If so, should I wire the switch with power in (solar panel) on the “off” side?
Just to clarify...you would have the trickle charger normally charging and the switch would cut off the connection? This is a momentary switch so the activation, or deactivation, would only take place as long as the switch is held down. If you want it to be able to switch on/off you’ll need a 12v toggle switch.
@@PhillipsVision hey! Correct. When the car is off, the trickle charger would send it’s current through the turned on switch to the battery. When the car is turned on, the switch will be off (to prevent power from the battery going to the panel). You’re right, I’d use a toggle switch, not a momentary switch.

Phillips Vision perfect. I knew there was an easy way. Thanks for the quick reply.
How do I do that?
fly n fury then just use a toggle switch “on / off”
Phillips Vision I thought a toggle switch would always be supplying power. I need the valve to open and stop trying to keep it open. Same thing for close. I don’t want to burn up the motor if it’s always trying to make the valve move in one direction or the other. I hope that makes sense.
What if you've got an LED balcony system with a wiring harness it's just simple red and black wires going to each light into a switch do you need to put that inline fuse on there to connect it to the switch in the cigarette lighter what do I have to do I really need some help
I want to put the switch in my little cigarette lighter thing because I don't use it so I figured that's a good power source how do I do that please help me
How can I get a main line power source from the battery I side of my car for future wiring with out running each positive cable from my cabin to the battery.
I hear you said you have a main line hub . Can you help me plz
You can get a control panel strip that the main battery connects to . From there you can run several accessories. They can be found on eBay and other online stores.
I wish u would show connected the radiator fan also
Hi I got a question. I bought a button with 4 wires sticking out the back. Does it HAVE to be two prong? Like what would be the issue if I just use the red and black wire that's already there?
Is it a 4 pin momentary switch?
@@PhillipsVision it says 4 pole on Amazon so yes?
@@hi7535 might be a multiple position switch. I use just an “On/Off” switch.
What kind of fuse needs to be added when wiring
It depends on the accessories
Is it possible to do this for headlights?
I bought a used truck with fog lights but every time I flip the switch it get hot and smells burnt so I quickly turn it off. It has an inline fuse coming from positive terminal at battery. What could be causing it to get hot?
The wire gauge may be too thin. I would use 14 gauge to play it safe
My fans run through a relay. I need to run the wire from the relay that is going to constant power currently to my on position and the power source to the off position? Right?
That is correct. When you switch it “on”, the circuit will be complete and the 12v power will flow to the fans.
Great vid , I’m installing rock lights for my truck about 20 lights under it , should I do the same as you did with the fuse or it’s not necessary?
Always use a fuse as a safety valve
Very informative...question: I have (4) LED lights and I want the ability to switch them all on at the same time..how do I go about doing so. Or do I need to have a seperate switch for each of them. Or can I group 2 and 2 ....please advise. Thx
You can run them all to one toggle switch but make sure you have an in-line fuse for their amp draw
@@PhillipsVision thanks for the response. How many in line fuse will I need, plus do you know what amperage of fuse I can use. Thx
@@jesseportillo324 you can use one fuse but it must be the amperage that the lights draw. You will need to check the specs on your lights
@@PhillipsVision thanks. Each light set draws 3.5amp...x 4 set of LED lights = 14amp ...so can I use an in line with a 20amp fuse ...also what type of toggle can be use i.e. type of amperage, 3 pronged toggle switch etc..
@@jesseportillo324 if you don’t need to control them individually I would just run all to one switch through one in-line fuse. The 20 amp is fine. Make sure the toggle switch is a 12volt and 20amp rating
So what do you do for the ground four extra lights
Just ground it to the chassis
@@cbonesteaksauce3833 that should work
Any suggestions on making lighter attachment in console of a mazda 3 not hot with out ignition?
Are you talking a power outlet or an actual lighter input?
@@PhillipsVision Thanks! The power output in center consoul We hooking up dash cam to that power
4:58 I have a 3 prong switch the one with the metal lever positive and negative ok but what's the third prong for where does that wire to,. Help urgently my life depends on it I need whipers so I can leave where I'm being evicted from it's winter vand a very rainy place
Usually the top and bottom pins are active and the middle neutral.
Is that a Fiero kit car you are working on?
It’s a factory built replica that was made in FL about 20yrs a go. I’m just restoring it, not full build. The donor car is a Fiero GT
i basically didnt do the fuse before i watched this video now my car wires started smoking makes sence lucky cars ok it was for my halo rings so i basically put the wire from the halo ring one to postive an one to negative on the battary an then have another wire from the postive wires going to the switch will two wires going to the switch but add a fuse like u showed right
Vlogstar Parm if they’re smoking you may also have too thin of a gauge of wire. Depending on the amps you’re drawing will determine the gauge you need.
@@PhillipsVisionright got it a little im using speaker cable but this i the lights i have i have 12v halo rings a 30cm knight rider led 12v light an 4 led strips lights which i basically connected all together which were all on to one swith if i had fuse this time is it good to add the fuse next to my battary an what amp fuse do i need or do i need to make seprate switch for all the lights i jus wanted them too all come on at once please let us know i saw the way u added the fuse thought at least next time the fuse an blow like u said u can cause a fire other way also its been fine for months it was yesterday this happend is this normal to u like it happend after all this time
Vlogstar Parm led strip lighting is usually about 2 amps. If that is your case then 20 gauge should be sufficient. I personally would go with 18 just to play it safe. Never hurts to go heavier for precaution
@@PhillipsVision hi ok whats 20gauge is that the wire as im using speaker wire but high quality init
Vlogstar Parm speaker wire is normally 24 gauge and not well insulated. The higher the gauge the thinner the wire. I wouldn’t recommend it
Sorry just to clear this up, I connect my positive wire from the battery to the off side and then my wire that connects to the device to the on side??? And keep ground completely separate from the switch
How many pins does your switch have?
@@PhillipsVision two like the one in the video
And sorry again, how do you know which fuse to use for the safety?
I have a 2 pin switch. There are no markings on it. How do I ascertain which is the “on “ pin and which is the what is the “off” pin?
@@stephendrahos9000 if it’s a 2-pin switch it one should be open and one closed. You may have to test each pin with the accessory and 12v power to see which works.
Have a question could you wire car reverse lights to toggle switch ?
You could but you would need to hardwire them to a 12volt source and not through the reverse switch of the shifter.
Hi jus one question can i use the ground on the battary as i dont want to ground to anywhere on my car u see an one switch is ok for a led light, 4 small led strips an led halo rings with rgb remote right
Vlogstar Parm you can use your Battery ground but it is not recommended. It’s best to ground to your chassis
@@PhillipsVision ok so its basically like i can tie the negative wire ro the ground next to my battary which u normally use when jump starting the car do i jus tie it around it as i seen the ground which is next to the battary silver ground
Vlogstar Parm you would use a split wire that allows you to attach a second wire to the negative line.
Hi
On a 3 prong switch it would need ground, right?
MsJohn1972 yes, should be voltage, signal and ground.
Do I need my condenser fan to keep my car from overheating
I'm totally confused... Why would they put a GROUND connection on the switch if it's not suggested to use it?
how do i find which wires are my fan wires under the dash.when i turn off my mini van the fans dont turn off so i ben unplugging them every time.shop says 200 hundred dollars
If you’ve been unplugging them, then just connect to those wires and run new lines from them to the dash
@@PhillipsVision ok so i have duel fans do they both run all the time or do i need 2 switches
@@chaosblackstar you can choose. I have both fans connected to one switch
@@PhillipsVision ok thanks phillip
Made it simple
I was always told to install a switch inline on the ground wire, is this incorrect?
It can be done, but I’ve never done it that way.
Wait were did you connect the ground?
To battery or to another ground wire or to a bare metal grounding part of car
Could you.wore a toggle switch dome light this way using a 10 amp fuse?
Mitchell Loven yes, just make sure the fuse is in place before the switch.
It would be the sam for Ignition switch
Starter switch is different since you’re connecting to the starter. Here’s a video I did on that..,
