    To anyone who is used to riding a 500cc Honda Silverwing or any other small cc bike, I'd say that the 883cc EVO will very much impress. That said, I think that the novelty will wear off pretty fast as one gets used to it, especially for anyone who has to hit the highway regularly. My previous bikes were 350cc and 750cc and so I was nervous about jumping all the way up to 1200cc but I'm very glad that I did. You don't have to run it wide open all the time. I really babied mine for a while until I got used to the power delivery and gained some confidence by gradually increasing how much I gave it the beans.

      Let the Harley take you under its little wing. I have had my big twin for 36 yr. But I have always had a sporty of some type along with it. I have had four 883s, one 76 1000cc, and now a 1200 iron. Crack the throttle on that and it brings a tingle to the seat of your pants. One thing to note is the great mileage they get…and not only sportsters

    Dude you are the best bike reviewer on youtube and i watch alot of bike reviews. Being im exactly your size now i have a much more clear idea of what to expect. Your passing on the highway comparisom between the 2 engines just solidified my decision to not even bother with an 883. Ive never rode one but the 1200 is nice. So ill stick with a 1200. Thank you

    Thank you for your awesome review! I recently took the MSF course and I am now in the market for motorcycle. I’m looking at the Irons, the 48s and even Indian Scouts. I’m a short rider (5’4”) and “midlife” in age but I’m finding my interests veering towards a 48. I sat on one last week but found the forward controls a wee bit far. I was informed there are seats available for the 48s that will place me in a more forward position, enough to safely/properly and comfortably control the bike. Again, thank you for your timely review, it is certainly helping me in my decision. Oh! And ride safe! 😁👍🏽

      You are welcome Al! Yes there are seats that can push you forward but you really need to test ride with that on to see if it is a right fit. It could be a safety hazard if you can reach the controls confidently. But congrats on getting your MSF completed and let us know what you end up gettin!

    About five days ago I just purchased an iron 883 and I’m 5 2 1/2 short before getting this bike I had only ridden on a bike that was loaned to me in my safety course to get my M1. and I’d have to say that getting slammers and the crash bars be an asset for any new beginners who are short like me I like your contact and your format thank you ride safe👍💯

    I definitely agree about the tank size regarding frequent stops. I just accepted that it’s all about the nostalgic 1948 look. There’s a video on RUclips of a chap who replaced the 2.1 with a larger, wide tank and it sort of looks cool for a moment till you realize it then loses the whole old school look and becomes a different bike. I keep a few large fuel cans in the shop that I refill every couple weeks and I find that it helps a lot with less station visits.

      So crazy how a simple fuel tank shape and size changes the overall look of the bike! But yeah, it helps to know the flaws before getting the bike, so it doesnt come as a surprise.

    Another awesome sporty review. The 48 is a great bike but you are right at my small 5'2" stature it was not comfortable stock. Also if I had to choose from the 1200 Sportsters I think the Iron is better looking. Something about the heat shields on the 48 are not pleasing to me. Really sad the Iron 1200 is gone. Also this series has been 🔥 I love watching your reviews and ratings.

    I've owned two Softails, the Dynas, three touring HD (Road Kings & Road Glide) and just picked up my second Sportster, a 48! The EVO is bullet proof and will last a lifetime. Such a fun bike!!

    What a great review! I'm really enjoying this series!
    Depending on your riding style, that fat 16" front wheel on the 48 compared to the skinny 19" front wheel on the Iron 1200/883 can make a big difference. The 16/130 on the 48 creates more trail compared to the 19/100 on the Iron. More trail means the wheel doesn't dip into the corners as easily. More trail also means more stability. The difference in trail between the two is nearly 18mm. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it is when it comes to trail and how a bike handles. If you like riding in the twisties like I do, the skinnier front wheel on the Iron 1200 or 883 is better. If your rides are less curvy and more on the highway (like Florida, central Illinois, or Saskatchewan), the 48 is better.

      It is rare for me to see an American mention Saskatchewan in a sentence with proper description of the place.. I suppose you have ridden through it? I love the fat tires on the 48 and Fat Bob - it grips the road nicely and looks really good. But yeah definitely not a canyon carver 😊

      This has my head all kinds of mixed up. Looking at pictures of trail angle it seems to me a smaller diameter wheel would decrease trail. What am I missing. I know you're right, harleys specs confirm this I just don't get it. Can anyone explain?

      @@esee5master To answer your questions fully would require a deep dive into bicycle and motorcycle geometry, but I'll answer some specifics here and provide a "further reading" resource at the end if you'd like to understand more.
      I think my original comment led to your confusion. I didn't say anything incorrect about geometry, but my comment does focus on wheel size and it makes it seem like that's what creates greater trail on the 48. Apologies for that. Here is a better explanation: For simplicity, what follows is about trail and how it makes the 48 different from the Iron. It's more than just about trail, though. Frame and motorcycle geometry is a complicated thing and there are many factors that contribute to how a bike handles. Okay, here goes. There actually isn't anything in motorcycle geometry called "trail angle." it's just trail and it's simply the horizontal distance where the wheel touches the ground to where the steering axis intersects with the ground vertically. The more trail a bike has, the harder it is to turn the wheel while it's in motion, but it also means the bike is more stable in motion. While wheel size does play a roll in what the trail is on a bike, it's not the only thing. Wheel size, fork offset/rake (distance from the steering axis to the center of the wheel. Fork offset and rake can be and are often used to mean the same thing), and steering axis angle all play a roll (it's a pretty complicated formula). Typically, larger wheels, decreased head angle, and decreased fork offset all increase trail. But interaction of the three plays a roll here. I don't have all the info on frame geometry for these two bikes, but H-D does show that the rake (also known as offset) on the 48 is greater than on the Iron by nearly 6mm. That's a huge difference in the world of bike geometry and makes a big difference in the amount of trail for each bike.     Man... this helped a ton. My wife wants an Iron 883, and I want a forty-eight. I'm only intending to use this bike for commuting to work (4.5 miles one way), and we're in a position where we can only get one of these bikes this year. We're going to go with the forty-eight first, then get her 883 next year. Thank you for this series and in depth review.

      Hey I am glad I could help! If your wife gets used to the 1200cc evo engine, she will not like the 883's power delivery after riding the 48 for a year. But if she likes the look for the 883, there is always the Iron 1200 (just gotta change the handlebars to make it look the same)

    Thanks for the review. I'm planning on the 48 being my first bike, but I plan on also switching the stock tank with a nightster tank if I can. I saw it done on some older 48 models to get a 3.1 gallon.

    Great review my friend. I agree with your opinion on these bikes. My stock 883 scared me every time I tried to pass on a two lane highway, just no burst of speed to get around quickly. I would pick the 1200 for the reasons you mentioned. I would add torque cams and a Stage 2 intake and exhaust system too. It’s styling in pure H-D and the Sportster name is Iconic. It’s a great first bike if you want a Harley. Everything Harley is expensive, I would add that first time riders could most likely find a clean used bike, and save some money. Where I live, Sportsters get traded in on bigger bikes after the owners gain some confidence. I moved up to my Pudgy Bobby 114, stage 2. Keep up the good work. 😎🇺🇸🤙🏻

      @@KSMotoCafe I had 4 air cooled bikes, 5 tuners, exhaust systems, intake and cam upgrades. Never did shocks, but should have. Tons of “Harley Tax” as you say. That’s the best part of the Pan America, it needs nothing to make it faster, or more comfortable. I am kind of binge watching your channel to catch up. 😎🤙🏻

    My '09 Sportster 1200 custom I bought new and it was my first HD bike. It came stock with 21" laced spoke front rim and skinny tire, progressive rear shocks, forward controls, and a 4.5G tank. It was by far the largest cc bike I'd owned and my first with forward controls. I was a little nervous at first but I settled right into it after just a week or two and I have to say that I really like it a lot. The super small 2.1G tank on the 48 would for sure 100% be a deal breaker for me despite the sexy slim appearance of it. I really don't like going to gas stations. I often find myself out on a nice evening run or just out in the country far from anywhere and having that extra gas is greatly appreciated because it allows me to just keep going or to make spur-of-the-moment decisions to go down a road I've never been down without worrying about getting lost and running out of fuel.

      @@KSMotoCafe Yes Sir, I’ve been flip flopping on that bike for so long but I think I’m just going to do it, we will see if they offer it again next year or not but if not I’ll just look for a used one. I know that they changed a few things in 2016 with them, bigger front forks, cast wheels instead of laced, better rear shocks...I’ll try and find a 2016 or up I think.       @@403punk3 awesome! Don't get suckered into new 48 unless it is a deal of a lifetime. I only got my iron 883 new because there was a glitch on the dealership's inventory and they held to the price that I saw during the glitch. Used sportster 48 (2016+) would be ideal!

    Thank you for the breakdown, I love the look of my 883, but after seeing the comparison with the '48, all I could say is that is a sexy bike man. I have a 2.1 gal tank in New York waiting for me to pick up and I was wondering if it is worth the frequent trips to the gas station or to have the sexiness of the bike...I guess I have to wait and see.

    I got a '22 Iron 883, which I intend to keep, but I also would like a bike I can put in an honest 500 miles and still be able to get out of bed next morning! A little stiffness is always to be expected, but if it's too painful to pay the price AFTER the ride, get a nice vintage car instead. Seriously. It makes more sense.
    This guy gives some good advice. He belittles my Iron 883 a lot, but his points are often valid.....

    I currently ride a 2022 Harley forty eight, and i LOVE IT. I mean i see these other larger Harleys and i think they LOOK good, but I've tried riding them and it just does NOT feel as good as riding my 48. Now maybe if i was doing a LOT of long distance highway riding, i might feel differently about it and actually WANT a larger street or road glide, but for my local riding and only SOME "longer" distance riding, the 48 is perfect.

    I keep a gas can in the garage and a battery operated pump to top off every couple days. I mostly commute on my bike so this way makes it easier for me

    You are so right… the 48 bike just looks so good, but the the downside is just gas mileage lol, and I’m a short rider so I got mid controls on it.. and it’s also a more beginners bike cause the front tires are bigger than the 883 makes it more stable.

    I hadn't really thought about the tank size on one of these. I've always thought of the tiny peanut tank as a show bike thing but yeah people do ride these on the daily.

    Awesome review! Super helpful, I'm shopping for my first bike and am seriously considering this model. I'm just wondering if you know of any motorcycle groups around Vancouver Island? My dad and I are going to be getting our learners very soon but we have no one to ride with for the initial two week supervising period. We have looked at the Vancouver Island Safety Council but we don't want to wait till the end of season to get licensed. Any suggestions?

      Thank you! There are a lot of riding groups on Vancouver Island! I would start by joining three facebook groups: Lower Island Riding Club (LIRC), Greater Victoria Riding Club, and Bike Nights Around Victoria, BC. All three clubs are different in nature but all very supportive in their own way. Most of the LIRC admins are VISC instructors or x-instructors. The other two groups are also good to ask for quick favours such as needing a supervisor rider for a quick trip or to get your MST completed!

    Bro, you get more lean forward not because of the smaller 15" wheel, the outer diameter of the wheel-tyre is the same on both bikes. You get more tucked forward because of the chassis/fork/handlebar designs.

    I've got a 2016 883 and i can only fit 2.2gal in the tank. When did the 3.3gal tank come out?

      3.3 has been around for a long time... it is possible that yours was modded with a 48 tank if its 2.2. Theres also a 5g sportster tank (custom series)

      The shocks will be an issue but otherwise, it's got enough power to move you. Though, depending on how tall you are, a softail might be a better power to weight ratio

    The peanut tank looks great on the 48 but that’s like 100 mile range would drive me nuts. My grom gets better range which is cray

      For the most part I agree but do yourself a favor and take one for a spin. I think a grom wins on the fun & convenience element, easier to maintain, cheaper, and might have more mods available. The grom is like the sportster of the moto world.

      So I was expecting that but I duno if I am just lucky but I have yet to ride a sportster with hard to find neutral. The only bike I had difficulty finding neutral was a Dyna Fat Bob.

    I do agree it's one of the best looking Sportsters and the murdered out variant resonates with me. The absolute deal breaker for "me" is the 2.1 gallon tank and fuel range. The regular Sportster tank is annoying with its range; the 2.1 is downright ridiculous. Try going on a group ride and having to pull over that often annoying the entire group?
    The brakes "I think" are a direct lift from the parts bin that are on your 883. With the added weight of the bigger motor makes them fade much faster then your bike. So I concur with your sentiments.

      yeah 48 is definitely not a group ride bike! Unless I guess if all the riders are on 48s lol. The funny part is, the wet weight of the 48 is lighter than the 883 because of smaller tank size!

    Of course the 1200 is superior. I ride an 03 883H I built with hammer 1275 and suspension. Chain drive with gearing change is next . possibly steering damper and fork brace for highway stability. I really enjoy riding it and do not desire a larger heavier bike. It's plenty fast for me

    You young guys…I remember two gallon tanks and four speed chain drives and when you hit reserve you found the nearest gas station and put in a gallon and a half. I got 65-70 mpg with those so tank size mattered less than the roids.

      The Iron 883 should be good for a shorter rider as it has low seat height and mid controls

    I like the 48 looks sexy but I think 883 is a better riding motorcycle

      it really depends on your height and preference of how you want ur legs to be folded. As a 5'10" I like the forward controls for comfort but the mid controls from the Iron gives me more control

    the frame and wheel base on both bikes is ridiculously small/short. if your anything taller than 5'6" you can't ride it and if you do change it enough to stretch out you will still look like a gorilla humping a football. Go with a Triumph at this displacement they are way better bikes.

      You already watched my other riding review that showed plenty of the 48 and asked what happens if you press the kill switch while riding - I answered and you thanked me. Now you come back to watch another video of mine on a series where it is just talking about the comparison of the two sportsters but you are upset about my face?

    Unless its literally your first time riding, the 883 is a waste of time. Buy a 48 special and get with it.

    for beginners, start low (in cc's) and go slow. learn and earn your skills; give yourself time to graduate with experience. there is nothing wrong with finding an old honda 360-ish. understand the ergonomics of riding with an engine.
