I tried learning Flint knapping from a local community of guys who are into it. It's way harder than it looks. I gave up because I kept shredding my hands.

Yeah it'll cut you up. For walls or tools? Definitely can't do it barehanded. Quartz is harder to work, but is less likely to cut your finger off.
