Oh wow, this is such a clever tip. I am pinning this comment so that other people can see! I had never thought about using interfacing for the lighter fabrics, but that is genius. Thanks for the tip!
I follow a professional doll and quilt maker who uses other fabrics beneath lightweight ones when combining different weights. She mixes wool and silk beautifully.
Using your scraps is such a great idea for a way to do Sew Frugal this year. I love how you broke down the different categories/approaches to piecing together your scraps. I'm looking forward to seeing whichever project/s you feel the most inspired by.
Your video came out at just the right time. I have a huge stash of fabrics, at least 2,000 yards. Some are over 40 years old and a couple tubs go back to when my granddaughter was in grade school. She is now a sophomore in college. Every time I sew down my stash, someone gives me a significant amount of fabric--the last was about 250 yards at least. Most of my sewing is for charity. I make simple garments such as shorts, pants, fleece jackets, knit and woven tops and dresses for our county schools and 2-yard dresses that our church group sends to Africa (not pillowcase dresses but just front and back with cut-on sleeves and elastic in the middle front and back). Our schools furnish free breakfasts and lunches for all students and send home food on the weekends. About 1,000 children in our county are homeless. Most jobs are in the service industries and in the $10-15 per hour range with a huge senior population. I belong to a state-wide sewing group and our chapter makes clothing as our community service project. I try to use as much fabric as I can when cutting out this clothing and anything leftover goes to a group that uses it for dog beds at the animal shelter. I hadn't thought about color blocking for the garments I make but am going to start focusing on it. Many times it's hard to make a matching outfit even with a huge stash but I am seelin possibilities so more items will go together. Mosr skirts and shorts take around 1/2 to 3/4 yards but could take advantage of color blocking to make them less boring.
My goodness, that is a whole lot of fabric! It sounds like you are able to do some amazing things with your hobby. You will have changed so many lives. Incredible! I'm so happy to hear that this has been able to inspire you more and open up the possibilities. Thanks for all of the wonderful things you do for needy people and pets around the world. 💗
It’s easy to tell that you’ve got your personal colour palette sorted! Those scraps look so good together in the combinations you’ve chosen. And I’m so pleased to see genuine scrap projects and ideas rather than some people who use “scraps” over a metre long!
I know exactly what you mean. A remnant is not a scrap. 😉 We all end up with these smaller pieces, and I try to keep anything that I feel like might be useful. It will be a lot of fun too to play around with some creative ideas this month!
Love your idea to use up fabric scraps and remnants for Sew Frugal. Great job summarising lots of different approaches as well, lots of inspiration here!
Thanks for all the great inspiration! I'm eager to use up a lot of older clothes by cutting them up. One really big benefit about piecing different fabrics is the ability to accentuate and decentuate parts of your body. If you want to decentuate broad shoulders, then use darker and/or smaller prints there. If you have narrow hips, you can add lighter and/or bolder prints there.
Well, first thing, you've encouraged me to sort those scraps, secondly, you've encouraged me to get my creative juices flowing. What a unique start to the sewfrugal challenge. Thanks for all of this, so appreciated.
This is so inspiring! I’m not on Instagram, so won’t be participating in the frugal challenge, but I think this is something beneficial for any sewist at any time of the year! We all have scraps! I really like how you put together inspiration boards on Pinterest. It really helps seeing how you might put fabrics together in different ways. Such a great video. Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed it! You are right, none of us need Instagram or an online challenge to be inspired. I think there's a lot of value in doing this for yourself!
thanks for talking through your thought process and inspiration Theresa. It's really cool to see all the diffferent clours and fabrics people are putting together for this challenge. I love the checked fabric with the pink and blue that you held up, that's gonna look lovely if you decide to use them. I'm not one for entering challenges but I was reminded about the Helens Closet Orchard top/dress and think I could get that out of a remnant I have- lets see!
Ooh, good choice! Especially if you go for the top. That's definitely another good one that could be pieced together from different fabrics. You can color block the top and bottom, etc. I hope you have fun if you do join in!
Such an inspiring video, with so many great patterns & ideas, thank you so much for putting it all together, must have taken you ages. So many fabrics you showed but if I had a choice I would love to see you make the Harper cardigan with the colours you selected for this. 👏👏👏
So much great potential! I'd like to see any of these combos. Make a garment or two you're likely to wear the most. I like the corduroy work coat, the idea of the linens together, and a top with the avocado knit. Fun vlog, Theresa! - Kelly
Thank you so much! Because they're scraps just taking up real estate, I don't mind being a little adventurous with them. It's fun to let the creativity flow.
So many fun ideas! I've been planning to do some kind of patchworky garment sewing for years but I just haven't got around to it yet. You've reignited the scrappy inspiration and I am already deep in a garment sewing phase, so maybe it will happen soon! Thanks for sharing so many great ideas! I'm looking forward to keeping up with everyone's videos this month. 💙
Great video. I love colour-blocking and using up my remnants. I recently made green jumper for my daughter using remnants of 5 different shades of green from my stash. We both love how it turned out.
Thank you! You’ve inspired me to go through my scraps to make some new garments. Can’t wait to see what you make. I’ve made the Harper cardigan several times but hadn’t thought about colour blocking, until now 😃
I feel like I've switched my brain onto color blocking mode. I can see color blocking options everywhere! 😆 I've been piecing together the Harper cardigan pattern, and I see that there are lines for short sleeves and 3/4 length sleeve. Those could easily be places to chop the sleeve for color blocking. I'll have to give that one a think!
I'm really excited to see what you create! For some reason I usually hate color blocking, but you are making me feel more excited about it!! Especially the linen looking patchwork goods. I'm going to see what I can come up with as well!
I'm always inspired when I see other people's creativity. I need to try a lot of these ideas out. There are so many ways to use smaller pieces of fabric. I'm excited to play. I hope you can find some fun things to try, yourself!
First, 4 smallish bins of somewhat sorted (at least by knit/woven), folded, plus a bit is not a problem: 6 27 gallon bins stacked on 2 50 gallon bins plus a handful of shoebox size bins unsorted scraps are a problem. Thank you for all the work you put into your Pinterest boards-thoughtful categorization (I don't categorize well hence the bins) and I spotted a few pins that looked super interest
Hahaha, well we all have our own limits. I tried to have a variety of ideas on the Pinterest boards. I feel like there is so much potential when working with scraps, but it isn't always easy to see it!
I hope you can find some fun fabrics to pair together within your own scraps! I've been piecing together the PDF for the west end jacket today. I think that one has to happen!
Love these patchwork and colour block ideas. I have been thinking about cutting up a bag of old jeans to patch them together to create a length of fabric I can use for projects 😍
Great ideas Theresa, I try to piece my scraps together to use them up. Have done this with the Munro. Love the jacket suggestions, definitely going to consider doing blocking on a jacket, really like the blocked denim jackets and your free pattern suggestion. 👍👍
Wow, Teresa! Talk about knocking it out of the park, you certainly did here. By taking this interesting concept of color blocking and following it all the way to the horizon in so many ways, you've given me weeks and weeks worth of sewing inspiration. Thank you!
Love this concept Theresa and really excited to see your journey. I'm a quilter who is learning how to sew garments and still struggling with fit. Once I can get the fit down though, such as the Linden sweatshirt, I did color block it and used a pink super soft sweatshirt on my sleeves. Almost perfect as I probably needed a bicep and sleeve adjustment to make it larger and more comfortable. Thanks so much for sharing your pinterest boards. I will follow those for sure. xx Karen
I feel like fit is a lifelong journey. Every garment has its own elements to fit, and then our bodies change! Good luck getting to a place where you're happy. I think coming into garment sewing from a quilting angle should certainly be an advantage to imagining fabrics pieced together!
@@LostMyThread thank you. It is encouraging to hear from a long time sewist that each garment has its own elements. It is certainly a challenge and I will keep going. Looking forward to seeing your makes.
I always enjoy how considered and cohesive your vlogs are! And I have downloaded two of the patterns already 😁 The Odell and the Emilie. Love the latter, which is reminiscent of the Tessuti Molly but has a way better size range. Excited to give that a try as we slowly move into our cooler months.
I am lost in admiration of how neatly your scraps are stored! I have a ton of scraps just jumbled together in a zipped under-bed storage bag... 🤪 I like to keep scraps in case I need to go back into an existing garment and create a new facing or ruffle or something. As I've developed my sewing skills I have looked critically at some garments that don't quite work and altered them to fit better, so I've been really glad I've kept those scraps! However, I have a vague notion that "one day" I shall make a patchwork item of some kind. I have seen in a "living museum" a bed cover made out of literally hundreds of strips of different fabrics, and it looked absolutely amazing! Necessity can sometimes be the mother of beauty as well as invention 😍 Even just a cushion cover or a tote bag would be a good candidate for similar treatment. I remember seeing a woman wearing a patterned skirt with a 4" band around the bottom in a complementary solid colour, and thought that would be a great way to lengthen a garment was too short, or as a way to put fabrics together where there isn't enough of either to make a full garment... You've really got my creative juices flowing this morning, Theresa, thank you! I can't wait to see what you create in the end! 😊
My scraps did not use to be this tidy! It has taken work to get here, but that hasn't necessarily meant that I use them up. This is just the kind of challenge that I need. I do also want to make up some wall hangings, cushion covers, etc. Those won't be for this challenge, as it needs to be garments, but I'm going to need to tackle this scrap problem from different angles. I hope you can find some fun surprises in your own scrap bag!
Loved your vlog so inspiring, certainly got my creative juices going. Would really like to try some colour blocking so will be matching up some fabrics today 😍
I can’t wait to see what you make! Roll around 31st! This was very inspirational. Thanks. The patterns also look good and there are a couple I will definitely be getting.
That is a great idea! I will start with organising my scraps like you I love the idea😊 and I need to match fabrics and for sure use some of the patterns❤
This is such an inspiring video, Theresa! I recently made a couple of colorblocked Page Hoodies using scraps and finds from the selvedge yard at Stylemaker. However, I also have bins of scraps like you that I’d like to use up. I can’t wait to see what you make this month!
This idea has been percolating for the last month or so. It was nice to be able to share it. I'm excited to see what I and other people make on the 31st!
🤩🤯I’m very impressed with your research and organization of items. You’ve definitely refined your color palette so almost all of your scraps coordinate, now you have so many choices! I love several of the combinations you’re thinking about and the patchwork selections are endless. I wish you the best of luck to be able to whittle down your scrap stash. Great job. 👏
Awesome, thank you so much! I've put links to the Pinterest boards in the description box, if you wanted to look at those more in depth. I have been cutting out the pattern pieces for the jacket. I think that one is a must this month. I'm excited to see how it comes together!
Oh, that is so nice to hear! I know that thinking around this concept was certainly getting my own creativity flowing. It's nice to know I've been able to inspire that in other people!
What a range of awesome ideas!!! What a lot of creative, thoughtful ideas, Theresa! I'm most interested in seeing the avocado shirt and a top made from the last floral store scrap. The tiered skirt sounds really fun, too!
Thanks, Tammy! I'm hoping to get lots of these made up, but even if I don't get them done in March, that doesn't mean I can't get there eventually. I felt surprisingly inspired going through these scraps. I'm looking forward to seeing it all come together.
Love all these ideas! I am so impressed by how so many of your fabrics go together and feel cohesive! I think making a cord jacket is a winner, all those colors are beautiful together and would look super cool! I also wonder if a patchwork Peppermint pocket skirt is somewhere in your future? 🔮
Sometimes it's hard to spot the fabrics that go together, unless you spend some time with them. I've looked through my scraps and felt like most of them seem totally mismatched. When I pulled one piece of fabric out at a time, it was easier to see the possibilities. You may be onto something with the patchwork peppermint pocket skirt. Haha. One for me to think on.
Thanks, Debs! I will definitely be trying the boxy top. I've pieced the PDF together already, and the pieces are surprisingly small. I feel like you can really stretch your scraps with that one!
This is an awesome video. I’ve got so many scraps and I love colour blocking. Thanks for all the amazing ideas and all the fantastic free patterns. The West End Jacket is my favourite, I’d love to see that made up. How fabulous are those sleeves on the Odell too.
So happy to be inspiring other people to look into their scrap bins. I've been piecing together the west end jacket today. I think that's going to be a fun one!
I love all your choices for projects- the aubergine w/the Liberty cotton lawn was such a great combo! I'm wondering if on the fabric that you suggested for the tiered skirt you could include godets of the solids w/the multicolored fabrics to incorporate the fabrics into a secondary design? Just a thought, my brain always heads for the most complicated ideas....
Really helpful ideas! I went through my scraps this week sighing at the very limited amounts for doing whole garments. I will have to go back and view them through fresh eyes thanks to you. Your avocado option is delicious 😂.
That's great to hear! I hope you can find some fun and unexpected pairings. I look forward to seeing what you can do. And yes, the avocado fabric is just so much fun. And very me. 🥑
Love your idea of using scraps and your inspiration photos were excellent examples! I personally feel like Ellie and Mac Patterns provide for great scrap using opportunities with some of their patterns; mostly the knit ones but they are not free. Thanks for sharing!
They do allow self-drafted patterns for this competition, as they are technically free. Please do participate if you make anything this month! There's definitely a lot to be said for drafting your own patterns. I always find it really inspiring when I hear the people do that!
Hi Theresa. I have overflowing scrap bins, also ha ha ha..😊 Dude, you sold them together before peaching them into your garment so that you would have one solid piece of fabric scrap?
I knew I wasn't alone, Zelda! 😆 Yes, that's a really easy way to color block and know that you're not accidentally shrinking the pattern piece. It's very effective!
I'd love to bust some scraps, but I am really not a fan of the patchwork aesthetic 😔 thanks for the awesome pattern overview though, I often upcycle old clothes and what works quite well for me is to take a piece of clothing and turn it into something smaller, e.g. a dress into a skirt, a men's hoodie into shorts etc and its always great to use free patterns
Thanks for finding lesser known free patterns for that challenge. Personally I'd be overwhelmed with the infinite possibilities with all your beautiful scraps.
If you have a big enough piece left from a dress, skirt or blouse, you could make a small matching purse! I made this one (ruclips.net/video/pxfBorbtrmM/видео.html) before, but there are so many free ones!
I don't think Peppermimt magazine patterns are free anymore. You have to pay something for them. Just in case a new sewer goes there, I haven't been able to find any of the patterns you mentioned for free. Shame cause some are really nice and I will buy but won't use for Sewfrugal.
They now have price options listed, including £0.00. The newer patterns no longer have a free option, but I've actually already downloaded the two that I mentioned, and they were definitely free!

I hope you can find some fun surprises in your own scrap bag!
Loved your vlog so inspiring, certainly got my creative juices going. Would really like to try some colour blocking so will be matching up some fabrics today 😍
I'm so happy to hear that. I hope you find some fun options!
Such great ideas! I love your colors.
Thank you so much!
I can’t wait to see what you make! Roll around 31st! This was very inspirational. Thanks. The patterns also look good and there are a couple I will definitely be getting.
I know, right? I feel the same way! There's so much potential. I'm looking forward to getting creative this month.
That is a great idea! I will start with organising my scraps like you I love the idea😊 and I need to match fabrics and for sure use some of the patterns❤
That's so awesome to hear! I hope you can find some fun and unexpected fabric combinations!
This is such an inspiring video, Theresa! I recently made a couple of colorblocked Page Hoodies using scraps and finds from the selvedge yard at Stylemaker. However, I also have bins of scraps like you that I’d like to use up. I can’t wait to see what you make this month!
Awesome! I hope you can find some fun new projects with your scraps!
I am Club Sinclair cardigan this Sew Frugal (no much time), and this is an inspiring post. I subscribed to your channel. 🎉
I think it should be a quick one to whip up. I look forward to trying it out, myself!
Really enjoyed this video and you’ve inspired me to try colour blocking. Never really tried it. Sending best wishes from Down Under 💐🇦🇺😎
I hope you give it a try. It's a great way to get a bit more creative with our craft!
Looking forward to the corduroy jacket - I hope you make it!
I've been piecing together the PDF today. That one is a definite!
I couldn't love this more Theresa, some great ideas & so informative too. Can't wait to se what you make
Thank you so much, Sam! It certainly felt like an idea that was in the spirit of the challenge.
Fabulous, thanks so much!
You are so welcome!
I can only dream of such a neat and tidy scrap bin 😂. Brilliant ideas and I can't wait to see what you make.
Haha, even though it's tidy, doesn't mean that I reach for them enough!
What a great video Theresa, you have spent such a lot of time putting this all together. Such great inspiration. Thank you very much.
This idea has been percolating for the last month or so. It was nice to be able to share it. I'm excited to see what I and other people make on the 31st!
Great video; lots of great ideas.
Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it.
Very inspiring! Thank you😃
You're so welcome!
Great job. 👏
Thank you so much! I really am spoiled for choice. It's a different way to sew, and I'm looking forward to seeing it all come together.
The odel is a sew pattern to me! a very interesting one
The sleeves are pretty amazing!!
A corduroy jacket would be fabulous!! Love this video. Saving it for inspiration 😊
Awesome, thank you so much! I've put links to the Pinterest boards in the description box, if you wanted to look at those more in depth. I have been cutting out the pattern pieces for the jacket. I think that one is a must this month. I'm excited to see how it comes together!
Excellent video inspiration. It's not free but Ellie and Mac have a lot of patterns that use scraps and colour blocking.
They're a great source of inspiration!
Wonderful ideas!
Thank you! It should be a fun month.
Inspirational vlog...my mind is bursting after seeing this!
Oh, that is so nice to hear! I know that thinking around this concept was certainly getting my own creativity flowing. It's nice to know I've been able to inspire that in other people!
Brilliant ideas Theresa, I am sorting through all my scraps here fuelled with ideas. Thanks for researching it. Looking forward to seeing your makes.
Oh, awesome! I really hope you can find some fun things to pair together.
Very inspirational vlog Theresa, I love everything you've shown. I have SO MANY scraps. Oooooh what shall I make??????. Xx
It's so nice to hear that you've been inspired to look through your own scraps. I hope you can find some fun combinations!
I can't wait to see what you make! I've been saving my scraps for the same reason. I love the patch/colour blocked look.
Oh cool! I hope you put something really beautiful together, too.
Super inspiration!! Thanks Theresa So many free patterns out there that I've never used! Love that peppermint boxy top!
Thanks, Debs! I will definitely be trying the boxy top. I've pieced the PDF together already, and the pieces are surprisingly small. I feel like you can really stretch your scraps with that one!
I love this idea. I have some scraps and I also love colour blocking. Thanks!
That's awesome to hear! I hope you can find some fun pairings.
OMG...we have the same stash (mine is basketed...LMAO! Your ideas have inspired me (once again) to dig in and get some daylight in my stash!
Nice! I hope you can find something fun to play around with!
Lovely vlog…thank you ❤
You're so welcome!
By hand London has the Polly top that might work. I really want to use it for some color blocking.
Yes! Great basic. It would be perfect.
Maybe use the main color linen for shorts or capris and use the stripe for pockets and hem cuffs - maybe a pocket placket? So many fun ideas Teresa!
Ooh, you are giving me ideas! I'm definitely going to think on that. Great suggestions!
I'm positively busting with ideas. The godet idea is really cool. Not sure if I've got big enough pieces, though. It will be fun to play!
Great suggestions
Thank you so much!
Thanks, Talisha! You could totally use those patterns as an inspiration, though. It's fun to get to be a little creative in the process!
I find this challenge interesting, but I don't use pre-made patterns. I have created my own blocks that I use to make my clothing.
Great ideas Thank you
You're so welcome! I hope you have a play in your own scraps, too!
Your scraps are so tidy!
Mine are mostly in ziplock bags.
Somehow I felt that keeping them tidy would mean that I was more likely to use them. I was wrong! At least, until now...
I'm happy to hear that you still got some inspiration!
Love your baskets full of scraps - where are the baskets from? Mine are a mess at the moment, I can't see what I've got!
Thanks! I just got them in a cheap shop. They cost about £1. Nothing fancy!
Thanks for finding lesser known free patterns for that challenge.
Personally I'd be overwhelmed with the infinite possibilities with all your beautiful scraps.
Haha, I think that's what's put me off using them for so long! I think having a challenge like this was just the push that I needed.
Fabulous vlog and ideas Teresa! Looking forward to seeing what you make 💜
Thank you so much! I keep getting more ideas, the more I look at these scraps. It's going to be a fun creative month!
Great laugh ...thanks ..
Thank you! 😉
If you have a big enough piece left from a dress, skirt or blouse, you could make a small matching purse! I made this one (ruclips.net/video/pxfBorbtrmM/видео.html) before, but there are so many free ones!
Very cool! Nice tip!
