Piper represented the audience in this scene. Angry that a beloved character is dead and a replacement has just waltzed in like nothing. She really embodied the anger and frustration death brings. I love the end scenes too. When Phoebe says “maybe start with thanks” it was another line for the audience. You maybe not fall in love with Paige right away and that is okay, just start slowly. Piper’s “I’m her sister” was the nod to audience that is okay to like her and accept her.
Given Holly and Shannen's friendship existing before and after the show, I've no doubt Holly channelled some of that pain and frustration of Shannen leaving into that performance at Prue's grave. It was beautiful and gut wrenching to watch, that was some genuine and raw emotion.
This is my favourite episode of the whole show. It has major presence from all 4 sisters, huge emotional resonance, really feels like a family (one recovering and rebuilding from an unthinkably enormous tragedy), and has huge stakes both in the foreground and background. Sums up the show in a lot of ways.
Combs' performance on this episode is one of the best performances of the whole series! Honorable mention Cole's line "To vanquish your sister? I think I’ll sit this one out"!
A lot of charmed fans said the show went downhill after Shannen left, but this episode is definitely one of the reasons why I love the Paige era. This episode showed the start of the sister’s growth, but more of Piper’s. She said in the episode that she doesn’t know how she’s gonna survive without Prue, but losing her made her one of the most badass witches, loving wife and mother, more caring sister, and just overall self-reliant and confident person that she is today. Not to mention the acting… it’s so raw! Also, now I can’t wait for Holly, Brian and Drew to talk about this in HOH podcast. Great analysis!
Something that’s amazing about Piper’s breakdown, is the fact that her raw emotion is so powerful, that it makes Paige cry about loosing Prue too, plus seeing her look at Prue’s grave plaque allows the audience, to see that Paige loves the sister she never met.
That's what I think. Even Cole being possessed by the Source and manipulating everything and everyone his way is great. The real problem is the way the Charmed Ones treated him in season 5. I like Prue but her death allowed the show to go in new directions and I like that.
This episode completely wrecks me to this day. I watched this pretty soon after I'd lost my father and pipers breakdown absolutely encompassed how i felt at the time about my fathers death. The one thing I noticed is how well this episode highlights the stages of grief.
I remember my grandmother passing not long after I'd started watching the series, and I specifically watched this and Charmed Again to help process it since I was so young at the time.
I’ve watched the scene where Piper visits Paige at work hundreds of times and every single time I cry. “I’m her sister” was truly a Piper way of letting Paige know that there’s room for her too.
You said everything I love about this episode better than I ever could have. As brilliant as the whole thing is... Holly, Holly, HOLLY. She is such a genius performer, and she made this one of the series best.
This episodes is heart breaking and powerful in understanding and dealing with grief. It is one of my favorites and Holly Marie Combs displayed such a range, how could you not be a fan of Piper? Thank you so much for these video essays. Love your insight when it comes to one of my favorite shows.
I wonder if the reason why Piper’s powers never grew after Prue died was due to the grief causing a greater emotional tolerance or restraint. The only time Piper goes berserk with magic is when she inhabiting another magic power or entities, (Goddess of the Earth, Fury, Valkyrie, Shakti) or under a spell other than the fire-starter episode with the enchanted gate. I wonder how her powers would of grown if Prue didn’t die or how much control she would of had over freezing and blow stuff up because it’s stated that she still didn’t have control of her powers in last season. She’s the only one that powers did not expand the rest of the show.
Her powers did expand though. She can channel her power through one hand and combine both while stealing the golden chalice. During PMS on a blue moon, she blew up the chandelier without looking at it and the toaster. The Wikia has her complete list of developments.
I just discovered your channel and am loving this so far. Charmed doesn't get enough love imo. I also remember the Phoebe + Cole arc where she turns evil. I remember that being one of the most badass and yet heart-breaking parts of an american tv show I've ever seen. It was masterfully written. I wish the writers had been allowed to make this show even deeper and more serious because that's where the writer's skills really shined the most.

Her worst fear was to lose a sister but she gets over her death pretty quickly and she barely mentions her throughout the series
I think because Phoebe knew that either one of her sisters was going to die no matter what, she was able to compartmentalise and accept it somewhat. Piper had no memory of the alternate timeline so...
@@BetterWithBob Well technically Piper was clued in on the alternate timeline. "I can't handle knowing that at any moment we have to relive, the hell we went through with Prue" - Piper to Leo ("Trial By Magic") Either they told her about it or she began to remember it (sort of like Deja Vu) until Leo or Phoebe confirmed it.
@@BlackGirlMarvel yea but the breakdown was for only one episode and she had another moment in "A Knight to Remember" but Piper carried her hurt for Prue throughout the series. I do think that she was focused on saving Paige and vanquishing the Source but if I was a writer, I would've written her mourning Prue after the Sources death
@@BetterWithBob I guess. But I feel like Piper and Phoebe should have been having different moments where they mourn/breakdown over Prue but it was always Piper. Phoebe did in one episode and that was it.
I wish season 4 had more episodes like this one. Mid season it just shifts gears and becomes something else. Charmed was always the strongest when the focus was on sisterhood.
Holly was so Emmy worthy in Season 4. How she didn't at least get a Saturn nomination is beyond me! I looked that up and at least Shannon got two nominations!
@@BetterWithBob Well that is dumb if she submitted and they didn't nominate her. She might not have submitted herself though so if so then that is on her. I know for the Emmys you have to pay a fee if you want to self-submit yourself for consideration (most actors have the studios do it for the actors but they don't do it for everyone on the show).
Getting over a major loss isn't easy, but if I've learned anything from my own losses it's that you really learn who is there for you in those moments. And that your family, or at least the family that care, will rally around and be there for you. Nothing will ever be the same, memories of those people will be tainted with a hint of grief and sadness but that's okay. I suffered a major loss almost eight and a half years ago, just before I turned 17 and to this day I remember things that at the time were hilarious are now tainted with the fact that he will never be there to do that again. This person meant the world to me and he was just as much of a father to me as my Dad is (I am talking about my stepdad btw) and he used to make up little rhymes just randomly. And my Mum found one on an old sheet of paper and it was just the funniest thing. It's the silliest of small things but reliving the way he did that made us all a little teary eyed and gave us all a laugh, my mum had it embroidered on a cushion for my sister for her 18th birthday. So yeah it is the little things that you miss.
@@BetterWithBob Thank you for such great content. I watch your Morgana video anytime I rewatch Merlin. It's a level of catharsis and helps me get through the show. 😂
Despite the many flaws this show would hurled every season after, I don't consider 4 to be part of the downhill as most people would think, it literally feels like an extension of Season 3, especially with the same cinematography. However I think Paige's introduction is by far one of the best inclusions of a cast replacement in any show. She felt right in with the show, and never felt like an outright replacement for Prue, which the audience learns along with her. Holly by far gives the best performance of the episode. I would say Seasons 1 and 4 are Piper's best seasons.
Paige worked because of the stories and the acting of course, but the chemistry between the leads, I think, was a major factor. (And of course the realistically representation of finding and accepting a new member in the family)
It's my favorite episode of the series, which is funny cause I don't really like Paige (very much like Piper in this beginning) and Prue is my favorite. I think this episode also starts to define that Piper is forever changed. She's more agressive, more confronting, and in a way more powerful than before. That will last until the end of the show. The sweetness and insecure piper we met before died with Prue. Loved this video and your insight, please keep it coming! ❤️
¡Fantastic vídeo! U R right, Prue ando Phoebe never get along that much but they were sisters and Charmed ones so they has to BUT they episodes with just Alyssa and Shannen are FANTASTIC, MY PERSONAL FAVORITE IS THE POWER OF TWO.
One of my favorite Charmed episodes too, and mostly for Holly Marie's performance--though you did give me a lot to think about with Paige here. Rose isn't the greatest actress tbqh, but that last bit where Piper meets Paige in the office is a great moment ("I promise it will get better") that she also created, as simple as it was. Phoebe unfortunately gets the short end of the stick in the episode (did Alyssa just really want to move past Shannen's exit completely?), but "Maybe you just start with thanks" was a nice moment for her too.
@@BlackGirlMarvel Sure, but it just never came off that Phoebe cared much about Prue's actual passing after the season premiere. As strained as her and Prue's relationship was, I do think it ran deeper than the video said. People can also grieve differently, yes, but compare this episode to Be Careful What You Witch For. It seems like Alyssa just couldn't/wouldn't give off the nuanced performance needed for the episode, considering Phoebe is an empath (as a person, not a magical being).
It was one of my favorite episodes but now for me its the sentimental. Piper confronting Prue's tombstone always brought a tear but its a little harder to watch now simply because of how lost my own sister
Revisiting this review after Shannen Doherty passed away....cannot but think those exact words came to Holly again. "I need you....please come back." Rip Shannen Doherty.....blessed be, our sister.
Hollys acting at prues grave is the same feeling I felt when I knew she wasn’t coming back. The pain and hurt holly really is a great actress. She channeled exactly what the majority of us charmed fans were feeling when pure left.
I just got to season 4 in my rewatch after 15 years and while I loved Piper before this is when she officially got tired of everybody's shit and turned into a pure sass machine I just can't help to love. The scene in the first episode of the season where Penny and Patty spill the beans about Paige lives rent free in my head. Piper: I'm going to ask Grams what's going on, actually. Phoebe: Grams? Piper: Mm-hmm. Your destiny still awaits, she says. There's a reason for everything, she says. So, it's time to summon her transparent butt back here and find out exactly what that reason is. Phoebe: Okay, but what should... Piper: "Here these words! Hear my cry spirit from the other side. Come to me, I summon thee. Cross now the GREAT DIVIDE!"
Not even watched yet and I know the analysis will be solid *Edit:* And he did not disappoint. Take the likes sir. Take the damn likes. Also love the shade in the comparison of cancel mob to the furies 😂
I have friends who've had to suffer their wrath multiple times, I felt like a little bit of shade was required hehehe Thank you for watching and having faith :)
Its amazing how well paige fits in.Shw uses her strengh to help piper, who hates her apearently to solve the problem. And shows emotional maturity, while also being impulsive, and how she really well plays off phobe who is similar but different. And the slow getting to grow but hard with piper while getting emotionally and being emotional mature enough to not be mad at her usually. Thats really good ass start. Prue isnt forgotten and has stillthat felt loss, piter has a hard time with that, and phobe ha but is more open. And paige gets to show how capable she is emotionally.
Phoebe was always my favorite Character except in some of the later seasons. but the more we grow with Piper the more we can tell how much Holly has grown with the role and how much amazing emotions that draw you in. I love all of the sisters for each reasons. ♥
I'm slowly starting to realise that Piper might actually be my dream woman lol, and she was always the sister I was most indifferent too - either loved or hated Phoebe and Paige depending on the season and generally disliked Prue
@@BetterWithBob Yeah i think its hard to choose but I feel like Piper was just always likable and enjoyable and I love to see her grow from being so insecure to being so outgoing and strong. Prue I personally always liked but she was often too bossy and gave the "mean girl" attitude to me. I understand from her story why, but I feel like she held grudges too long especially to her dad and Phoebe. Whilst I can understand I still feel like they couldve worked through it. Phoebe especially. I've always liked Alyssa Milano as an actress and watched a lot of the work shes been in though not Whos the boss strangely enough, so it was somewhat easy for me to love Phoebe though in some seasons like you said not so much. Paige I enjoy though it has taken me until a rewatch this time to appreciate her addition and work on Charmed. The only thing Im missing is more sisterly dynamic between the three cause it often feels like its Phoebe and Piper against Paige or the other way around. Whilst I get their background I just always felt like something wasnt quite right in that sense. But I always liked her energy and spark to the show regardless.
@@BetterWithBob I do think it's easy to overlook Piper, especially the first three seasons...maybe bc her sisters have (at first glance= stronger, outgoing ersonalities. Which is why I love how Piper, after Prue´s death, started growing and we could see that whole journey.
Sadly, this show could have been so much better had we had more grief episodes. Granted you don't want to dwell on loss but Prue was never really mentioned after this and that was wrong because Holly, Rose and even Alyssa (her underlying survivor's guilt was dropped but could have been a helluva good story). Even after Phoebe got the high paying job the fact that it had been a big thing of tension with Prue was never addressed.
I wish there was one more episode before introduction of paige so we could see more of papier anger and grief. More of “f elders and u know what u can tell them they buried their precious charmed ones when we buried our sister”
I think even though Phoebe and Prue weren’t the closest she still has a complete breakdown in another episode about it since she was being strong for piper
Knowing about an alternate timeline where it was Piper who died probably cushioned the blow too. She knew one way or another, she was losing a sister. Piper didn't remember the other timeline so it was even harder for her
Think about what Paige now has to tell her boss. I'm sure it was well known she was an only child. I guess she could say that she looked into her adoption and found out she had sisters.
Amazing revieuw, Bob 👍👍 I loveeee this episode Piper is my favoriete sister, Wil you please make revieuw about episode " oh my godness part 2," season 5) Holly and the the the rest of cast really act amazy job!!! Lot of love from 🇧🇪
I don't really think it's fair to say that Phoebe and Prue were never that close so Piper is more affected by Prue's death. I'm technically closer with my sister than with my brothers but that doesn't mean I love one more than the other, they're all equally important to me and I could never choose between them. I think Piper and Phoebe grieve in different ways but not that Piper is more hurt or upset at the loss than Phoebe is. Not to mention that the show started after Prue and Phoebe had a falling out, it's not like they hated each other their whole lives or something. Prue and Phoebe's relationship had so much growth and development over the course of the 3 seasons that by the time Prue died it's not accurate to say they weren't close. That being said, I do wish they dedicated at least one subplot to Phoebe grieving Prue. As an audience, we didn't just have to say goodbye to Prue as a character but also her relationships and dynamics with other characters that we won't get to see again. The Prue-Piper dynamic still lived on in the storyline about Piper's grief and it felt like a proper farewell but I feel like they just left us hanging with the Prue-Phoebe dynamic which was disappointing to me because the episodes where Phoebe and Prue are teamed up are some of my favorites.
I didn't like Page too for a long time actually. When I watched this show for the first time it was years ago and when I learned that Prue is dead I couldn't believe it and of course when they immidiately found a replacement I didn't like it. Only much later because they had lot of seasons I began to treat her with tolerance. Now I actually like her, but in later seasons. And I've always liked Piper just because how she was, always caring, worried about others, sometimes funny and sweet. Well, and Prue, because she was always a true leader. Phoebe started to annoy me when after some years authors suddenly made her an expert in everything - magic, men, family relations and eventually she began to give advice to the whole city, lol. I always thought that was so unnatural, just the sudden desire of authors.
I really freaking love tour Charmed reviews, You just notice.some things i Havent noticed from My 20 times watching the show. Just You should turn the volumen of your voice up on the editing. 🧐 I little sugesttion, I hope You don't get mad at this. 🤓😎😎❤️❤️❤️
Out of universe I'm assuming it's because the mausoleum was a pre-existing set they could use and save going out on location (Holly says the budget started getting tighter around Season 4).
After season 4 i never watched the rest it was Phoebe storyline with cole and only her. Season 4 make me like paige, i believe having prue, piper and paige will be good. My favourite season 3,4,1,2,6,5,78
I really hated with all My heart Paige when she was introduced because Prue is my favorite Charmed one BUT something in Rose maked me love Paige and then Paige became My 2nd. Favorite Charmed one. I can not imagine Charmed without Paige.
This is the definitive Holly episode. She acted the hell (no pun intended) out of it.

Man that scene in that episode (along with “Morality Bites”) never fails to make me cry.
I also felt the same rage when my mum passed on..i still feel like screaming at her for leaving me in this world to fight it out alone.
Holly was so Emmy worthy in Season 4.
How she didn't at least get a Saturn nomination is beyond me! I looked that up and at least Shannon got two nominations!
Yeah I'm not sure why she got no recognition. I know you have to submit for consideration so maybe she did and it got rejected
Hello! New subscriber here. Loving all the Charmed content
So glad I found your channel. Love your videos.
Thank you so much :)
@@BetterWithBob Thank you for such great content. I watch your Morgana video anytime I rewatch Merlin. It's a level of catharsis and helps me get through the show. 😂
@@GrecianWarlock oh wow :O three years since I did that one and all
@@BetterWithBob Good work holds up. Plus I really enjoy watching RUclips videos I've already seen 😭
Totally agree with you about season 4
Paige worked because of the stories and the acting of course, but the chemistry between the leads, I think, was a major factor. (And of course the realistically representation of finding and accepting a new member in the family)
I’m so emotional right now 😭
It's my favorite episode of the series, which is funny cause I don't really like Paige (very much like Piper in this beginning) and Prue is my favorite.
I think this episode also starts to define that Piper is forever changed. She's more agressive, more confronting, and in a way more powerful than before. That will last until the end of the show. The sweetness and insecure piper we met before died with Prue.
Loved this video and your insight, please keep it coming! ❤️
It makes me 😢 cry every time I see Piper cry. I have always been a single child and seeing paige having sisters made me happy ❤
THANK YOU SO SO SOOO MUCH! i needed this so much, so AMAZING job 💖🙏🏻💖
This episode showed Phoebe centered as the middle sister giving advice to both her older and younger sisters. I dont see it as the short end.
@@raspyswirlyThere's notes in the Charmed Wikia that Phoebe was more upset when Prue died at the end of season 2 than 3.
@@VampireSexGoddess On Be Careful What You Witch For? That was exactly my comment on some clip here on YT too haha
I wish I could like a video more than once, you deserve more likes fr!!
also, LOVE that comparison to The Body, another great TV writing about grief.
aww thank you so much :)
It was one of my favorite episodes but now for me its the sentimental. Piper confronting Prue's tombstone always brought a tear but its a little harder to watch now simply because of how lost my own sister
❤❤❤
Wait I’m actually crying 😭
😢 I get goosebumps and want to cry every time I see this
It's very intense sure
Holly looked fantastic in this episode
Revisiting this review after Shannen Doherty passed away....cannot but think those exact words came to Holly again.
"I need you....please come back."
Rip Shannen Doherty.....blessed be, our sister.
When piper brake down from prues death I allways cry every time
It's such a harrowing scene. Holly was incredible
Great Breakdown ❤😢
LOL! I absolutely ADORE this Piper.
Just amazing ❤❤❤ thank you
-because she's our sister
-not for long 🤣
One of my favorite Piper/Holly episodes ever.
Not even watched yet and I know the analysis will be solid
*Edit:* And he did not disappoint. Take the likes sir. Take the damn likes.
Also love the shade in the comparison of cancel mob to the furies 😂
I have friends who've had to suffer their wrath multiple times, I felt like a little bit of shade was required hehehe
Thank you for watching and having faith :)
One of my favorite episodes. Holly stole the show.
I will always love Piper. Mr. Bob can do a character profile on Cookie Lyon lol
I had to google who that was lol
@@BetterWithBob lol you will love this character very nuanced
I can't help but wonder how much Holly channeled losing Shannen on set into the crypt scene.
Oh how I love these!
Paige being promoted and having a degree and quitting her job was wild
This is my favourite Charmed episode of all time.
I love that episode. I don't think it's my favorite of the season (maybe "Womb raider") but it's high in my top. Season 4 was just great.
That's a good one too 👍
Sadly, this show could have been so much better had we had more grief episodes.
Absolutely agree. Perfectly said. And plus was happy prue was gone. Actually preferred paige, she is my fave sister.
*How dare u? How could u leave me all alone, i need u;*
Holly ,that was powerful an tears me up every time 4
I love this review. Wow
Thank you :)
I wish there was one more episode before introduction of paige so we could see more of papier anger and grief. More of “f elders and u know what u can tell them they buried their precious charmed ones when we buried our sister”
Yeah you are right about phoebe and prue relationship
I think even though Phoebe and Prue weren’t the closest she still has a complete breakdown in another episode about it since she was being strong for piper
Knowing about an alternate timeline where it was Piper who died probably cushioned the blow too. She knew one way or another, she was losing a sister. Piper didn't remember the other timeline so it was even harder for her
Yes yes yes yes yes
Think about what Paige now has to tell her boss. I'm sure it was well known she was an only child.
I guess she could say that she looked into her adoption and found out she had sisters.
Amazing revieuw, Bob 👍👍
I loveeee this episode
Piper is my favoriete sister,
Wil you please make revieuw about episode " oh my godness part 2," season 5)
Holly and the the the rest of cast really act amazy job!!!
Love it ❤
T hgo from middle t Oldest, Piper understood Prues choices
Phoebe and Prue were close just a different dynamic.
charmed was so amazing paige was best sister and her power
I really freaking love tour Charmed reviews, You just notice.some things i Havent noticed from My 20 times watching the show. Just You should turn the volumen of your voice up on the editing. 🧐 I little sugesttion, I hope You don't get mad at this. 🤓😎😎❤️❤️❤️
I wish they had made an episode where the four of them were together 😢
Yeah it would have been nice to have Paige get to meet Prue
Also how come prue was buried in a musalim and not in ground ?? ?
Out of universe I'm assuming it's because the mausoleum was a pre-existing set they could use and save going out on location (Holly says the budget started getting tighter around Season 4).
You're not sad about Prue's death? You didn't like Prue?
After season 4 i never watched the rest it was Phoebe storyline with cole and only her.
Season 4 make me like paige, i believe having prue, piper and paige will be good.
My favourite season 3,4,1,2,6,5,78
You can just see the visible relief on Alyssa after Shannon left. 🙄
I really hated with all My heart Paige when she was introduced because Prue is my favorite Charmed one BUT something in Rose maked me love Paige and then Paige became My 2nd. Favorite Charmed one. I can not imagine Charmed without Paige.
Idek why u like alssya/phoebe ahe didnt even really care abt her job as long as she could get her way thats all that would matter to her
I will always love my Leo sister Paige.
