His parents told him to take care of Sasuke, and he promptly tortures him multiple times from the age of 7-13 when he came back to Konoha. My God bro you're right and that's why this anime believe it or not is the number 1 anime where the deuteragonist Sasuke is more well written and compelling than the Protagonist. And there really aren't a protagonist and Antagonists there are just multiple deuteragonists even the villains have strong sypathetic motivations and think they're the hero and are saving the world and the full story of Itachi makes a rewatch from the beginning hit even harder because everytime you see Naruto having a flashback and an inner monolog about loneliness and how he was alone and he always saw Sasuke sitting alone on the dock by the water in the same place Izumi and Itachi spent time together and he knew Sasuke was alone and always wanted to approach him and be his friend so they could be together instead of alone. Seeing Sasuke sitting there hits harder knowing he's sitting right inbetween where Izumi and Itachi would be sharing an intimate moment together if the massacre never happened.
All the most fucked up relationships in this franchise are the ones that "work" where the characters have the strongest bond. But there are also many ideal romances that are tragically cut short orchestrated for some "greater good" that never materialized. Danzo and Obito framed the rest of the Uchiha for the nine tails attack from over a decade earlier so the Uchiha figured "fuck it" If they hate us and fear us for our power and we're actually capable of something like that we'll capture the Jinchuriki extract the nine tails and take over. Itachi's father figured if they're feared and hated for a crime they didn't commit they may as well actually do the deed and Rin's death turned Obito into an absolute monster who was a shell of a man who had to tell Kakashi it wasn't about Rin when we all knew it was all about Rin and always had been about Rin which is what Madara and Obito's whole beef with the system was and why Madara was always fighting and trying to take over because like Sasuke at the end too he wanted a revolution for the tailed beasts to die for the Kages and the Daimyo's rule to end and for the people to decide their own destiny and so 12 year old little girls don't have to die for nothing or as part of someone else's fucked up plan for revolution Madara purposefully turned Obito into a monster. Obito and Madara were plagued by thoughts of "what kind of world's rulers send children to fight and die in wars?" and Madara was haunted and broken by the death of his brother Izuna 💔 just like Obito was crushed by Rin's death. In that moment he probably wished the boulder would crush and kill him. And that's why Hashirama never gave up on Madara because they were best friends as little boys, and he understood Madara's pain and sorrow. Madara is up there with Raul Menendez as one of the greatest fictional villains of all time Raul is my favorite because black ops 2 had the only compelling storyline for a first person shooter in years Halo and the others fell off and the other COD campaigns weren't as good with the exception of the Original black ops which was amazing as well when Hudson comes out of the bubble in the interrogation room and tells Mason Victor Reznov has been dead for 5 years and he purposefully formed a bond with Alex Mason in prison to hijack his brainwashing and sacrifice himself so Alex could escape from the prison and exact revenge for Reznov all while being led by a hallucination of Reznov based on trauma and losing Reznov his only friend in the Gulag these were different from normal FPS stories they were deeply personal and Menendez always reminded me of Madara and Obito and nothing will ever hit as hard as Raul's backstory with his little sister Josefina and the mission "Suffer With Me" where he tricks Woods into killing Mason, had kidnapped Hudson and David Mason crippled Woods for life. Made them choose who died with Hudson volunteering to redeem himself and Raul telling David one day he will remember everything "all the pain, the anger and when you do I want you to come to me David" "you will suffer with me" "the dead don't suffer that's why you and me are still here" or when he planned to get captured Bane style on purpose and asked David Mason "Josefina was my reason for living, what drives you David is it me?" Too many good quotes from that game. But in the end it's the same a man will watch the world burn the way the US military burned his baby sister just to try to warm his cold dead heart. It was always about Izuna and Rin.

Everything that happened was planned by Black Zetsu and Madara, and then they recruited Obito. They used Rin's death to turn him into a heartless monster because Obitos' heart died with Rin but his strong will Kakashi noticed was very much still alive which made him a useful tool for Madara but each villain in succession forced the other to witness or commit the same kind of atrocities that made Madara a rebel to begin with the death of his brother Izuna. One way or another with the exception of Itachi they all wanted to bring down the entire system and rule of the Kages and the Daimyos as well as kill off the tailed beasts in Sasuke's case. Madara came to believe that only through the Eternal Tsukoyomi could peace be attained and Obito just wanted to make the plan happen do his part and die and see Rin again. Sasuke ironically chose the Revolutionary path that would actually lead to freedom as neither he, Orochimaru nor Kabuto are Gung ho to knowingly give up their free will to Madara's Tsukoyomi. Every character in this entire story had a redemption monolog as they laid dying and was the hero of their own story who was trying to save the world the only way they knew how which is why Hashirama stayed by his best friend Madara's side until the end.

Seriously dumb the anime didn't show Itachi's 80 year Tsukuyomi on Izumi, and just has Itachi hit up Tobi to do it because he wasn't capable. That goes to show how much he cared for her, putting her in a Tsukuyomi where they lived happily ever after, and within seconds dies in his arms, already having lived a full life, but knowing this is what he had to do
