criminally underappreciated video. points on viggor and that entire piece of story are excellently enlightening. video as a whole was great but that specific part was greatest. thank you for this video, i hope more of the wizard 101 community finds it.
Thanks, that means a lot! The catacombs story was the thing that made me want to make this video in the first place, so I definitely agree with you there. I've always thought Wizard101 deserves to be a part of the broader conversation when it comes to MMOs and gaming in general, so I try my best over in this little corner of RUclips!
THIS THIS!!!!! I've been preaching arc 4 and wizard101 as a piece of narrative art for years. It's the quintessential story about the experience of learning and existing in a world unfamiliar to the individual. It's the perfect metaphor for childhood and adolescence.
Since you kind of mentioned Khrysalis and Empyrea, I’d like to mention that Azteca and Dragonspyre are severely underrated in terms of story as well. I could go on about those worlds.
Pirate101 is also in amber, but for the inverse of the company and fandom. The fandom wants innovation, but the company so far just doesnt care about it because of the mobile downfall. My theory is that they blame Pirate101 due to having 2 MMOs, when in reality it was more of a lack of interest for new mobile games.
Yep, I don't think that's an inaccurate assessment. I think that Pirate mobile game they released two months or so ago was a very tone deaf move; considering Pirate101 was basically killed by mobile games, it would probably be best if the words "mobile" and "Pirate101" never entered the same universe as one another again. They had to have known that, considering how tepid they were about it's launch. That being said, I will say -- if not for the company itself -- the people actually working at KI still clearly love Pirate101. Basically anyone who used to work on it openly admits to it being the better game (at least gameplay wise), and Sam Johnson just released a fairly lengthy Discord post two days ago about how saddening the decay of Pirate had been for him. Unfortunately, it doesn't really change the fact that we'll probably never seen a full-blown expansion for the game again, at least not before 2027.
@AurumAlex64 I always saw pirate101 as the more engaging story and such, that and it being significantly darker for the most part, one thing I enjoy doing is tying up loose ends in what is basically me making an entire arc 2. Did you know that the first bishop is still unknown in terms of whereabouts and if they are dead or not? It's probably the most interesting loose end, I'd love to collab at some point about pirate101 and all that it consists of
once again appreciating this video. hope for a similar one for pirate 101 someday, criminally underappreciated game. anywho, viggor remains my favorite part of this video. with how long wizard 101 gets after arc 1 i dont see myself ever getting that far, so i appreciate seeing everything im missing from new content.
LITERALLY INSANE VIDEO! I really hope you’re proud of this video because I love it a whole lot. It’s crazy how Wizard 101 along with some guidance from you, got me to think critically about media I watch and ethical questions aswell. Great video 10/10
Bro idk how this was never in my recommended, I love story related Wiz content and this video is remarkable! Been facing block while writing a script about Khrysalis's story and this is such good inspiration. You went into insane depth and mentioned things I never even noticed like the meaning of Dasein's name. Keep up the great work!
@@AurumAlex64 its an awkward one because im not sure what a good solution is. as you briefly mention at the start, wow lets you skip stuff and leaves old content to time travel zones, which means anyone wanting to do the old content is functionally playing single player. even just the option of skipping the content kinda shows it for what it is- disposable filler. on the other hand, 300 hours is a big stop gap for people wanting to get into a new game. bloat might just be an unescapable problem for mmos. i do think runescape (or at least oldschool, i think its worse in rs3) handles it the best- the requirements to do story content arentthat big, with the highest skill requirement for any quest being, iirc, in the 70s, which as a capstone is more than achievable. course, osrs has its own impenetrabilities, but for accessing the pretty great story it handles it pretty well
@@Natelu-Sama Yeah, I'm not sure how Runescape handles it's story, but in Wizard101's case, the arcs tend to build off of each other, so being able to skip right to the 4th Arc would make things get confusing quick. Level gating doesn't really work because levels are really just a progress indicator more than anything in the game. In fact, W101 actually removed all level requirements for story quests last year because people wanted to do Lvl 1 challenges for the game, since there's a feature to lock your level and store any additional xp you get for later. The impression I get is that skips like the one in WoW are really only good for games that don't place as high an emphasis on story. Like, pretty much the only people skipping straight to Endwalker in Final Fantasy 14 are the people who just want to raid and don't care about becoming invested in the story. But KI have made it pretty clear that's not the direction they want to go with for W101. So I suspect there will always just be a high barrier to entry, like you say.

Thanks! I don't think there are any other videos talking about the themes of Wizard101, so it was exciting to make a one-of-a-kind video!

Dang, just noticed how few views this has. Solid video.
Such a well done vid, really appreciate you spotlighting the storytelling👏🏾
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video!
Phenomenal
great video! i wish mmos werent so hard to get into, but at the very least im stealing the nothing for my next dnd campaign haha
It can be really frustrating. The 4th Arc has a super interesting story, you just have to get through... 300 hours of game to get to it. Oops.
