Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright Isn't Just a Crossover
Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a fascinating combination of fantasy and reality, a nesting egg of twisted logic -- but that's only one small part of this Story.

The main thing is, it's (almost) impossible to hate a game you love. The first paper mario i played was sticker star and i enjoyed it, soon after was color splash and i also enjoyed it, i just can't hate these games. I played the previous 3 only after, and i liked them but not as much. This is why when origami king was about to release, i couldn't understand the controversy of sticker star and color splash because they were my reference for paper mario. I think that most people who started with sticker star (especially if they were children at the time) have a more positive look on the whole franchise because they can't really "hate" the most "hated" game. I also was the kind of person that, when blocked on a level, would go search on youtube for the solution and go "oooh so that's how you do it" and it was satisfying.

Really good video, but I think it's a little misdirected. The Layton series does have its nostalgic fans who played the series, but in reality most of those games aren't accessible now outside of mobile releases. The company no doubt also wants to create new fans for the franchise. Ergo, I believe they're creating this entry to pull in both old fans and new people into Layton's world, and potentially giving Level5 an excuse to remake or port the original series as well. Now they COULD just continue where Katrielle's story left off, and stick by the themes presented there, but that would be a problem- because most people, and even most Layton fans, have not played her game or watched the anime. They have no knowledge of those things. And in order to reach that point again, Level5 first needs to reintroduce the series to people. So that's what I think they're doing I think New World of Steam won't ignore the anime and its message, and isn't just playing to existing fans' nostalgia. I believe it will take advantage of its timeline placement to not interfere with either the past or future of the story, and serve as a nice middleground with a story that can be enjoyed standalone. Then, if popular enough, not only will the old games get rereleased, but they'll be able to return to the story of Katrielle and the themes of the anime

I really appreciate the "optimistically neutral" perspective you took on this video, especially on the combat system. Idk I love that you just straight up call it ass lmao, but also talk about how it not only could have worked, but also moments in the game where it almost does. I never really hated Color Splash; I always knew there were elements I liked about it but could never figure out what exactly, and this video made me realize it's the atmosphere. The quaint and colorful style with a more "fun" type of story is honestly something that should be welcomed in the PM franchise, so it's kind of a bummer people don't acknowledge this game's strengths very often. I don't have a strong attachment to this game, but I still really appreciate this video lol. I don't even know if I have the game anymore but I'd probably be willing to give it another chance, though I'm sure as hell not going for 100% lol.

No ace Attorney would 100% threaten and show Maya as dead. Her being in danger or on trial is a once per game occurence. Specifically there's a case in ace Attorney trials and tribulations where it appears Maya was murdered, and of course Phoenix's devastation is a focus

Things I would change about Paper Jam: 1. Make it similar to Partners in Time, with the Bros (both sets not just Paper Mario) hop in and out of the Book, trying to stop both Bowsers from ruling over BOTH worlds with some sort of “All Powerful Magic” (I.E The Star Rod from PM64 or something like the Royal Stickers from Sticker Star) 2. Have Paper Luigi be the dialog for the Brothers, not Starlow. I’m sorry but Starlow genuinely pisses me off in this game, her as a partner character made no real sense outside of BIS where she was an “important representative of the Star Sprites.” 3. Give the Paper Bros “Partners” as their version of Special Attacks, which can either deal damage to enemies or buff the Bros in some way (I.E Watt for increasing the Bros’ POW or Vivian to Burn all Enemies) 4. Just more inclusion from Paper Mario and M&L series, this game felt like it was meant to be a celebration of both IPs but doesn’t really do much with either. Imagine going to a version of the Glitz Pit in the Paper Mushroom Kingdom where optional bosses like O’Chunks, Midbus, or even Rawk Hawk could be fought. Have Kent C. Koopa show up as a roadblock to get from the “real” Mushroom King to some spot outside of Toad Town 5. Give the final boss more “OMMPH” behind it, Shiny Robo-Bowser is cool and all but outside of him being immune to Trio Attacks (and countering with his own) until you break his armor, he’s got nothing really. 6. Remove 70% of the jabs at Luigi, or at least have Mario and Paper Mario protect Green Stache and (legally distinct) Mr. L from the downright bullying they get in this game

Great video, I never played the game myself but did watch a 100% playthrough as if "playing" along. As a huge fan of the Layton series (as you might tell) and knowing what the AA series is about, it was a great watch with a compelling Layton grand mystery chopped up into smaller AA courtroom cases. Learning more about Phoenix and Maya's characters through their interaction with Layton and Luke was great. The most memorable thing for me was the soundtrack, which both games are well known for, especially the credits theme being an epic medley of songs from both games. Great video about this underrated game.

Don't know if its a hot take but I really dont care for the final threats being these nebulous concepts like Bittercold and Dark Matter. Having a pokemon (PM2) or just a physical threat (PM1) works just fine without going down the pretentious route of supposedly deep concepts that just aren't done all that well considering how vast said concepts are. Also doesn't help that since the big boss isn't just a pokemon or a physical threat but something so nebulous, the "solution" to beat them also don't appear to be anything other than the generic positivity good or acceptance of bad etc etc. And none of these solutions feel all that impactful because none of them are proper solutions, just a bunch of platitudes because as time and life goes on, these issues WILL come back whether the game wants to acknowledge that fact or not. I will also be honest I did not particularly care for the twist with the partner at the end. I liked the idea itself but its execution felt very lack luster. But I will say on a positive note, I absolutely ADORED the beginning section of the game. The starting town and the school section had me so invested in the setting and characters which the rest of the game just doesn't deliver on imo.

To the point of the idea of this is a Layton game featuring Phoenix Wright being said as a criticism I think part of the idea being somewhat prevalent if that of the two series it seems like, at least in this day and age, of the two franchises its probably more likely for someone to come into this game caring more about Ace Attorney than Professor Layton. And I can understand how someone coming from that perspective would feel that way. But an interesting point I don't see brought up that often is the opposite perspective. Personally I did come in more from the Ace Attorney side, having only played one Layton game before playing this game. However when it released I did know one person who came into it being a big Professor Layton fan who did not care about Ace Attorney at all and she did not like this game either and she did not end up liking this crossover either. I think to understand why it bears looking into the moment to moment mechanical structure. While things like the setting, larger structure of the story and even just overall aesthetic feel more in Layton's style. On the surface the moment to moment gameplay feels a bit more evenly split. The courtroom generally plays like an Ace Attorney game and the stuff out of court for the most part plays like a Professor Layton game. But its also worth considering how the courtroom doesn't represent all of Ace Attorney's structure, its home series is already split along similar lines between courtroom and investiagation in a way that Layton games aren't really. And investigations are probably where Ace Attorney is at its closest to Layton, still quite different beasts but both could in some way be described as being somewhat tradtional point and click adventure structures (with Layton having smaller puzzles to break it up whereas in AA the point and click is the break from the larger courtroom gameplay). As such the back and forth between the two styles fits a little more naturally into the expectations one would bring it from an Ace Attorney game, Layton's style of overworld and puzzles can fit more easily into the strucutre of an Ace Attorney game without as much disruption as a substitute for the investigations phase. Meanwhile this to this friend who played coming from only caring about the Layton side of the crossover the courtroom sequences just felt like an interruption to the game she actually wanted to play. And ended up slowing down and dragging out the pace of the overall larger mystery she was interested in investigating with those smaller scale sub mystery witch hunts. Or I guess to summarize this all another way. While its not inaccurate to call this a Professor Layton game starring Phoenix Wright. By another metric I think you can also reasonably describe the game as an Ace Attorney game with Professor Layton puzzles

When you began adressing the labelling problem, which is correct between Layton game or AA game, I was skeptical at first. "why do this matter? lol" but as I listen, your points hit me directly. how the truth reveal is progressing from Wright's POV, the fantasy-like setting more leaning to Layton than the realistic AA, is the true protag Wright or Layton, the story flow... they all in fact, do bothered me at one point when I was playing Vs! Edit: Got a little too occupied writing my little piece that i forgot the basic courtesy of writing my appreciation for this video. Thank you. Your analyses really puts into perspective the things i like and in turn makes me gush more about what VS does right. Really enjoyed this vid! Since people are already seeing similarities in mechanics of The Great Ace Attorney and VS, i would like to point out another in terms of two story trope that TGAA definitely utilizes with VS clearly as the inspiration. Non-death trials being a very unexpected intricate anchor for weighty plot developments and important casts removal that ACTUALLY happens and affects the world and writing. VS having the first trope be the entire focal point of the twist and the second trope being non-permanent, while inversely TGAA has only one case that spans the duology for the first trope and a layered removal cast for the first and a cast removal that shakes the entire world and even players for the second. Seriously makes me sing praise for both games because it made me look back to the Ace Attorney franchise i love and made me think "Man, it's actually ridiculous how the protagonist lawyers are just like in a scenic boat ride that goes on a predetermined path and nothing wild shall ever happen!". The first trope making me realize how powerful subtle foreshadowing is and the second trope refreshening my enjoyment towards the series cause dark sudden and irreversible turns in the flow of the boat ride goes a long way to shake up the experience.

Such a neat analysis, as always. When this game first came out, I was extremely disappointed by it. I do not enjoy fantasy at all, so the setting put me off, and the explanation behind the way "magic" works frustrated me, even though I'm perfectly fine with the nonsense behind the other Layton plot twists. Water that gives you an allergy to the sound of pure silver is certainly the laziest thing ever put into a Layton game. I have sinced realised that the rules of a story don't need to make any sense, and even plot holes are fine as long as it serves the the story that is being told and the characters that are being analysed. And it is true that while the premise for why magic works in the first place is silly, the mechanics of it are extremely fleshed out, also because they have to be. Though to be fair, I still cannot wrap my head around some of the things in this game... like how did no one ever find the bell tower, or all the machinery? Surely someone would walk into it at some point? But at its core, this game tells a deeply tragic tale full of sinister twists, and as always, the real mystery is not the logic behind the seemingly supernatural events, but the character trauma. Thus regarding the narrative, this game is phenomenal. I do have my issues though with the game - the puzzles are not nearly as great as the ones in the mainline Layton series, and some of the objections and lines of logic in the court trials are extremely stupid, for example when you have to present the drawing of the dragon to prove that Espella has seen a dragon. From what I've gathered watching people play this game, those coming from Ace Attorney greatly enjoyed it until they got to the end when their opinion changed because of how silly the explanation is and because the players don't solve the mystery themselves, rather the solution is being presented to them, as is normal for Layton. In a way, this game is probably best experienced going into it with no expectations of what these games are supposed to be like, so perhaps it is best suited for people who are new to either series.

Apparently, the official art for the Town Square screen shows a large metal gate surrounding the Bell Tower, but the gate isn't in the actual game, strangely, so I think that's supposed to be the explanation for why no one ran into the tower itself. But I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

big fan of your points on time travel; theres a class barrier there that a lot of weaker stuff walks into. my favourite solutions are the moffat era of doctor who (where time is in flux always, everyone has the ability to change the future at all times- anyone who tries to change the world, even if its objectively for the better, will inevitably be feared) and the fox-men version of days of future past (when the day comes that the future is impossible to improve, some of us morally must give up their lives if theres a chance to fix it) and man the stuff at the end about franchise slop hits harder year after year. cant wait for minecraft the movie starring jack black (real (fake)). you should 1000% play the danganronpa games if thats sorta theming interests you btw, both the sequels deal with it in super cool interesting ways

I just thought of a better and more, bitter sweet? I think that's the right word, anyways, A bitter-sweet way to have ended it. By making the main cast fight for the right for aionios to exist, while simultaneously knowing that this world is built on unsustainable practices, ones with which malice is baked into the very core of the world, that could have evolved into a compromised ending. Like they need to kickstart the flow of time again, yet there's too much to sacrifice. So it's a hard choice. But they struggle to have their cake and eat it too, until the only option left is to send the data of aionios hurling through origin's databanks, corrupting it and altering the flow of "what should have been" like a virus, even taking place centuries after. Kind of like a slow acting poison for the new world. Having the death of aionios accelerate would also speed this choice up. Reset and poison the future in everybody's favour, or let others live in ignorance and die shortly without any legacy left? Best part about this approach, is that it might be cliché, but it fits the games themes a lot better. I would even go so far as to say that that's what would have been written if they were given a bit more time. 2 more things. 1. Thank god for the "no chain attack/pause menu" cheats that someone made and 2. Sorry. I just really like banter and am just geared as a writer/storyteller by default. Sorry for bringing this up like a year after Edit because i am a dumbass and i forgor. Ive only made it to roughly up until halfway through chapter 6 a few months after launch, so there might be a lot of nuance that i'm missing. Also this could arguably be considered even more of a melting pot than aionios, reinforcing the themes of harmony and the two worlds mixed together, with what's essentially a parasite forcing them to mix together and bond like glue filling the cracks. That would also tie into the main cast's own growth, emphasizing the all too real human greed to keep living, to keep everything as you continue on, & their continuous struggles towards more than whats possible in the immediate now. I think that would be a nice contrast and reflecton on their growth since chapter 1

It's RUclips's test and compare feature; I upload 2+ images as thumbnails, and over a 2 week period (maximum), RUclips shows people those thumbnails and finds the one that leads to the most watch time.

As someone who's only played Ace Attorney games and thought PLvPW is one of the best games I've ever played, this video managed to motivate me to give Professor Layton games a try!

An additional point on the “this game was seriously rushed and made by people who didn’t have anything else to give the series” point The glitches in this game are insane. Nearly every rock in this game has a way to clip out of bounds. Nearly every scene has at least one way to clip out of bounds which as I said is most commonly a rock for some reason, and the speedrun literally skips so much that if you use the route and mess up a specific order of buttons on mt brrr you LITERALLY CRASH THE GAME.

Seeing all of this Golden Court love online recently has made me regain hope in humanity. Seriously one of my top 5 cases in the whole series. This was one of the most fun visual novels I've ever played through, I always wondered what a game like Danganronpa or Ace Attorney would be like if magic was incorporated into the cases, and little did I know it was right under my nose the whole time. Great game with a lot of unsung praise, fantastic video.

any plans to cover the OT or the movie? imo (sweeping statement) the OT are more effectively written but theyre not aiming for anything as deep as the prequels, with the series mostly getting deeper as it goes. theyre also just way more charming in a way i cant really explain, especially CV which is super underrated in series rankings i think. and the movies interesting because it very effectively turns the games into a movie in a way that ive not seen in other attempts to do the same thing (and its got the best suppoting cast in the series) edit, it occurs to me you maybe covered this in the VS video,,,, but ive not played that game yet so ive not seen it haha

Yup, I do plan to cover the OT, but I'm going to do LMJ before that, so it probably won't be until sometime next year. As for Eternal Diva, I do have some thoughts about how to cover it, but there probably won't be a dedicated video. Maybe as an addendum on another Layton video, but not sure right now.

As an AA fan and someone who had never played a Layton game, I had a lot of fun with this game, the trials were so good! I'll admit though, it didn't turn me into a Layton fan, I was just desperate to get to the next trial, and found Layton slightly too smug. One disappointment I had was that Maya never actually does any spirit channelling, which is literally her thing! It would have been the *perfect* disguise for her to channel Mia, while transformed she wouldn't be recognised. Also, it would have been a nice curveball for Layton, who wouldn't be able to continue to simply pooh-pooh the concept of spirit channelling. I wanted to see one thing that he couldn't just smirk and explain. As an aside, The Cutting Room Floor shows that there's cut dialogue for Phoenix as a baker, where he loudly says "Thanks a bunch!" complete with the large red text speech bubble, which would have been fun.

I just want to point out to the French version, because they made the bold choice of giving Phoenix Wright a very distinct voice for this crossover. I know mainly complaoned about it, and while the French VA can be criticized (some line deliveries are a little too flat at times), I actually really like this choice. It gives Nick some real personality. (Also, having non English VA is rare enough to be celebrated)

Wow, thank you for sharing that sweet story about you and your friends playing this game! I remember playing this game as a kid after falling in love with the Professor Layton series--it really was such an emotional journey. I really got so attached to Maya and Phoenix despite only vaguely knowing about Ace Attorney. And boy did the Professor's death scene hit me SO HARD as a kid. I didn't think about the logistics of it being improbable to kill a main character off, I CRIED for him being gone. I felt for Luke who essentially lost his father figure, for Phoenix who had to step in as a big brother figure after he lost his dear friend Maya and was grieving himself, and even for Espella who had been pushed aside by everyone but still showed her compassion to anyone in need. The emotions of this journey hit so hard in this game because all of the characters felt so real. They suffered like we do, but they were also able to come together in the darkest times to care for each other. One of the best games I have ever played, thank you for making this!! <3
