Pan Am Railways, Remembered

  • Pan Am Railways, also known as Guilford Rail System (GTI) or Springfield Terminal (ST) is a railroad many love to hate. Most of my Pan Am memories center around southern Maine, but I've encountered the regional railroad everywhere from Rotterdam, NY to Waterville, ME. East Deerfield, Rigby, and many other iconic locations are shown.
    Thanks for watching! If you haven't already, please subscribe and hit the bell to stay up to date on my new adventures.

    It was summer 1988 3 years after I graduated high school I had moved to Hampton New Hampshire. One spring night I heard something weird so I walked to where the noise was coming from and I saw EMD Springfield Terminal GP 7 #20. I watched them roll the cars past the locomotive hook up and depart. I met Wally and Bobby the second night Wally invited me in and showed the massive steam generator it was huge! Wally explained it was bought as Portland Terminal# 1081 to Maine Central # 581.Though we became great friends it wasn't until GP 39-2 # 369 Guilford painted D & H ex reading unit. Wally told me to stand over and watch him? I did this for 3 or 4 days. It was my birthday on Monday, Wally asked me if I got the idea on how to run a locomotive? I said I think so Wally and Bobby said happy birthday engineer! I was so nervous but confident with Wall 18 inches from me.. I did the switching all that week. I have run Gp38s, GP 38-2 GP 39-2 GP 40 GP 40-2. Wally and Bobby both have passed then they ripped up the Hampton Branch I still have the memories of my 2 best friends ever! Now I'm 58 and I still think back to the good old days switching the lumber yard. I usually ran a couple days a week while Wally relaxed. I got that good!

    As much as I don't like Guilford. I am going to miss those blue and white deisels coming through on the Massachusetts trains. I'm glad we were both able to document them

    Pan Am used to have "flying stock" rather then rolling stock. I miss Pan Am Airways.

    Nice tribute, at 8:19 thats a good friend of mine, Leo Corriveau. He retired a few months later. He started off on the Bangor and Aroostook before going to the Saint Lawerence and Atlantic, then to Guilford, and finally Pan Am.

      Also 2548 is the only CSX geep up here. They tried some GP40's but all of them blew up or were in worse shape than the 300's, and have been sent back to Waycross.

    Very cool; your first shot in Rigby Yard has a Pan Am freshly painted and a Wisconsin Central boxcar right behind it !! I find it is always sad to see a short line or regional disappear as they are usually more interesting than the Class 1's and have quite different and varied fleets. Good coverage Harrison.

    I had a studio in Holyoke overlooking Guilford's Connecticut River line in the late 2000s...10 mph and no passing track. No Amtrak and little freight, except Sullivan scrap metal. Once a week we had EDPL crawl through southbound and on the way north again would back into the Sullivan spur and pick up loads. And back and forth forever. Once PLED stalled after adding a cut of scrap gons...that was fun. They never had M.U. on these trips. And then Pan Am and I would wait to see a blue dip.

    Surprisingly a lot of C40-8s have been leading M426 and M427 recently to and from portland, and I hope i can catch some of the dash 8s before csx repaints the ones their keeping and ones not being kept, and i feel the same about pan am just like you harrison, and i loved pan am and Guilford, but hated the fact that they never moved enough traffic and maintenance upkeep was bad or far to none, and im glad in the end at least pan am/guilford made a profit
    Ive Seen my fair share of pan am units.. even my parents and freinds have seen their units
    Best Catch was an All GE 4 C40-8 POED back in 2017 in old orchard, 7627 leading which is now CSXT 9280 (ironically the best catch) and PLED and EDPL 2 weeknights in a row in northampton with MEC 353 an ex conrail/CSX Geep, theres others here and there, but those are my favorites
    Pan Am Railways
    2001-2023
    You May Be Gone, But Never Missed
    Sadly i never saw pan ams ocs but if csx is rumored to maybe use it or keep the engines. Then eventually i might venture to waycross to see them, but im content so far with what pan am trains and power I’ve seen, plus many pan am and guilford boxcars

    "Brighter future for New England railroading." Please feel free to compare tariff rates under CSX precision scheduled railroading with previous rates.
    Feel free to interview farmers from the Midwest what their experiences have been with PSR including add on fees.I believe both answers will be an argument for the newly passed, and likely signed reciprocal switching law. 🚂

    Good history and video. Not a fan of G&W. They are the only holding company I am aware that will not let small railroads they purchase keep their unique identity. “Locomotives become pumpkin orange”

    • @NorthCountryTrains
      @NorthCountryTrains  11 месяцев назад +3

      True, I also am not a fan of G&W as they’ve robbed all of our colorful New England railroads of their identity, but in the case of Pan Am I don’t mind as most of their engines were poorly-patched junkers anyway.

    • @TrainsAreReallyCool
      @TrainsAreReallyCool 11 месяцев назад +1

      Being Honest, I agree. I was quite unhappy when I heard that G&W would be the operator of the Berkshire and Eastern. Their paint scheme is nice, but it's on the locomotives of practically every short line in the country. I'm really getting tired of it.

    • @LiamFire17B-R-qz2xr
      @LiamFire17B-R-qz2xr 11 месяцев назад +2

      I agree. I mean, G&W is a cool railroad company, but since I live in Connecticut, there are tons of shortline railroads with G&W trains. Pan Am also runs in Connecticut, the central of the state. And when I heard that Pan Am is going away, they were gonna have a G&W railroad take over, which I'm getting tired of seeing those things. I Never seen or heard foreign power, but leasers on these shortline trains in this state. There is CSX, but they mostly sit in the Cedar Hill Yard.

    Guilford Transportation did not bankrupt the D&H. This is bunk. The D&H was a continuous bankrupt railroad since the early 1970s. The D&H was a state subsidized fribulating corpse. Nothing else. GTI picked up the property for $600,000 assumption of lots of red ink.
    The concept was GTI purchase of Conrail and a better post bankrupt position for the D&H. 🛤️

    • @NorthCountryTrains
      @NorthCountryTrains  11 месяцев назад

      Now that I’ve thoroughly studied the history of the railroad I know this, but several years ago, the time I referenced in this video, I didn’t know about the continued loss of revenue and just assumed it was all Guilford

    • @TrainsAreReallyCool
      @TrainsAreReallyCool 11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, but instead the Canadians bought the D&H which forever cursed our railroad industry with their monopoly.

      Once GTI got Conrail, the D&H probably still would have been dumped.
