I think her lyrics show huge amounts of suffering and at the same time hope and passion. Depression and euphoria. This is what makes her such a great songwriter and show woman, and at the same time, is a huge weight to carry.
I think she's written better lyrics since, especially the two albums after. But in terms of songs this is her masterpiece. Polly is a genius.
This album has no filler. Flawless from front to end.

P.J. Harvey is beautiful, but let's not be superficial. She is remarkable in many ways, singing/song writing/guitar playing, etc., so her beauty is not just her looks. She's hot and smart and unique -- unconventionally attractive.
Well written, I couldn't agree more. But just for her looks - I find her hot and sweet at the same time. To be honest, she is very attractive to me. If I were dating a woman, I would definitely go out with girl like Polly or Rooney Mara, not with some obvious beauty.
Oh yeah; androgyny is attractive. (Not my business, but you might want to try dating a woman.) If I'd never heard PJ sing, just saw her standing there or dancing like she does, she'd have my vote. Rooney Mara, also. Strong women, smart women are sexy.
One of the better albums after the brit pop rubbish. Written with the producer to be dry and cold but the vocals are brill.

With Polly I've learn the importance of how the music works from its simple source, from the core, I think she captures a simple feeling and then develops it's deepness trough the arrangements and course of the song, she's a genuine musical genius, I hope her existence trough this songs never cease

Somehow, between the loud, primal guitar of her early stuff, and the weirdness and artiness of her later stuff, I was too distracted to realize how amazingly good of a vocalist PJ Harvey is until now. This song is just brilliant.

This is one of those songs that everyone should hear at least once. I could write a lot more, but it's more simple than that - this song speaks to me. Maybe it's the theme, maybe it's the lyrics or maybe it's the layering of spoken words over vocal tracks (I've always loved that). But perhaps it's a great song by an artist hitting her stride and making amazing music. All I know is that I really love this song.

Why isn't more of a big star, her music is so much better than most mainsteam music.
I think it's because she never blew up much in the US. I mean don't get me wrong, she had some airplay in America but she wasn't a mega pop act like Mariah Carey or Britney Spears or something like that.

+VIOLETjahn310 Thank you, I was trying unsuccessfully to discern exactly what it is that Mme Harvey's various selves (trauma-fragmented selves? ecstasy-fragmented selves? both?? dream-character psyche-facets? alternate-selves from parallel realities/timestreams à la mode Bashar?!) are singing in some spots (often in trio-form, the voices following different tempos) but kept getting lost in the fascinating flow of the complexity of the thing, and simply hearing emotion-filled phonemes as if this were in some mellifluous alien language. This is an amazing, intriguing video, making stunningly effective use of an otherwise simple visual effect in service of a deserving musical piece; one of my favourites, right up there with, say, vimeo.com/25996242 .
