Again, the Defense Challenge show was absolutely fantastic! Hope to see everyone back, with maybe additional contestants? Possibly Tommy Moore, Tony Jeffries, Golden Bell Training, Jessie Enkamp, McDojo, Samurai, GarandThumb, Master Wong, or Michael Jai White? The show needs a major network ..it's that good!
Think about your front kick like a stomp, this is the reason you lean back, stomping develops power from the posterior chain (back/glutes) and transmits it better through the heel. For maximum power, do this as you are pushing off with the balance foot.
I really appreciate how you tailor the concept to the individual. The guy in the beginning was having trouble moving his back foot when he jabbed, and you noticed that he naturally did it better with a cross and took it from there. Great job coach! 👏
I like the Icy Mike on hard2hurt that is funny, loud and outspoken but I love the teacher Icy Mike with your students. You are an exceptional instructor/coach and transfer knowledge so well to beginners through advanced students. The bonus is……both Mikes are great to watch.
"You're probably going to feel like you need to poop at some point." I felt that in my soul! The closest I have ever come to soiling myself during training was immediately after catching a solid front kick to the intestines. I've been choked out a few times, and felt brutal pressure on the guts from a tight body triangle, but nothing had me running to the toilet faster than taking that front kick a little low. It wasn't a groin shot, but I let my sparring partner think that's why I left the mats, cuz the truth was much more embarrassing.
amount of respect i have for this guy after the self defense championship is crazy. Regardless of his placing, for his age and size this man put up a fight against some very difficult opponents. Very impressed with him and how he carries himself
Every time I watch your videos, I'm impressed by how good an instructor you are. Your ability to systematically deconstruct and reassemble a skill is really top notch. Your integration of perception in the tactics is also really really smartly done. I think it's maybe been a while since you did a pure technique video like you used to do all the time. They're great.
The Self Defense Challenge show was the best T.V. (RUclips) show of the year, imo! Icy Mike did great ..got some bad calls, imo. Hope to see him and everyone back for Season 2! Fantastic!
Great seminar! For self defense purposes, it's good to sometimes train in kicking drills with your street shoes on. Many toe and ankle forms for certain kicks like ball of the foot front kick, blade of the foot side thrust kick etc don't work with many common street shoes so you may have to adjust your barefoot toe and ankle form to make them work.
You're a GREAT teacher, Mike, but we all know that the first thing you'll use in a serious fight is a sidekick and I Can't Wait for you to have seminars about that! 😁
I feel this whole seminar is very icy mike, as he's not only great with his front kicks, but he also likes sneaky tricks and psychological warfare against his opponent.
Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hong, portrayed by Jackie Chan in the drunken master movies and Jet Li in the Once Upon a Time in China series was famous for using a "No-Shadow"/"Shadowless" kick. In the movies it looks like Mortal Kombat's bicycle kick but in practice it was a technique where you would distract with the hands and land a low kick. This definitely qualifies as the setup hides the tell or "shadow".
ICY MIKE fought off 4 muggers and 2 k9 units before this seminar NY wild but Mike is too hard2hurt. All facts no gas stay safe out here yall or not i aint your Dad
This was a great seminar, I’m really glad I took it and I’d honestly recommend it for anyone regardless of skill level. Very well thought out and taught. I’m glad this course material is available also as I was unfortunately not successful in taking lots of notes that day.
A solid front kick and a good flashlight and you are ready for the streets!! In all seriousness, you seem like a very good instructor!! I'll definitely be training that close range front kick technique!!
That last sneaky thing works incredibly good to land a jab when your opponent thinks he is in a safe distance. It might be from this channel I picked it up from.
What...?..!..?..! Wow, yeah, I'm going to buy that course today! Like you said, all the little stuff that we do but the way they're linked-up is so next level!
Excellent.. 1 back step up and 1 side step makes all the diff for balance 🎉🎉😮 its the LITTLE things that matter in life -and Icy Mike is the man who goes looking for those things ❤ because he cares 🎉 to share hiw NOT to get knocked out/fall over and be efficient in thise split second moments of life or death decision making etc etcu need ti change the title to the reason your front kick DOESNT suck ANYMORE 😂.. right Here!
Giving the lady on the end of the line a tap on the side of the face made me laugh, but not as much as her reaction. It's SO hard to remember to keep your hands up protectively, and the 'hit she didn't see coming' is why you must. I only laugh because it's happened to me.
Learn how to kick a tree without hurting yourself or falling down, humans are much easier to kick full power without falling down compared to a tree. I can literally fold men in half with my side and front heel kicks (front heel kick is different from teep and can actually penetrate through opponents structure and break it). But learning to land with your heel or footpad can be hard for some noobs and if you mess up and toekick a tree you are going to break your foot. Some Wing Chun gyms will have a giant treetrunk built into the ground or with legs for you to kick. And heel kicking it feels really good for your lower back if you have back problems. Kicking something that heavy teaches you to land your heel right so your whole bodyweight actually goes into the kick instead of doing a pansy ass flick kick.
Icy mike, I’d love to train with you. Can you do a video for those of us with disabilities? I use a wheelchair, I’m not bound to it, but I have several limitations. I can scrap good for a minute, but each action has a huuuge cost. Example, I can kick, but a kick might dislocate my ankle and knee, probably even my hip. If I throw a punch, any punch could be the one to dislocate my shoulder or my wrist or elbow. It does come with a slight benefit, I have insane reach, each joint and hyper extend to an insane degree. It’s also very hard to put me in arm bars and joint locks because the joints can extend easily. So I’d love to get some advice for when running isn’t an option. I’ve been in plenty of fights when I was younger, but now I’m almost 40 and gotta rethink how I would fight to defend if I ever need to.
Love that last sneaky set up, I do the same thing in sparring but with my jab! Although in a self defense situation, would you say that its wise to take that much time to set up stuff like this?
One day, when my "yet to be had" kids grow up, when people ask them who their role model is, their answer better be Icy Mike or there will be HELL to pay.
But my jab distance is close to my long knee than it is to my front kick. So does body type make a difference? Never been a front kick guy. I do a lot of push kicks though. To get the distance I need to deliver bigger kicks.
Great tips, but front kick with front leg is not a particularly powerful kick, useful to surprise and maybe keep distance, now front kick with the back leg, that's a potentially ending fight kick.
In a street fight it's a better tactic to try and keep both feet on the ground as much as possible. Voluntarily removing a point of contact for escape , balance etc is not a good plan. For competition it's fine to do whatever but in a real fight you want to stay on your feet, not go to the ground, and stay on both feet. You can't run or evade on one foot or on your back. MMA with "rules" is not realistic on the streets. If you want to be realistic then start eye gouging, throat punching, nut punching, open hand strikes to the head(to keep from breaking your fingers/hand) head butts, bare elbows etc. I have to reedit......I did see your force on force with Craig Douglas..... That stuff is way way more like a real fight.....as I think you'll agree. Why are you not teaching that?
I said if it's a competition that's fine.....miss that part? And tell me what part of my statement(s) is incorrect in a real fight. You will fight the way you train . People like Lee Morrison, Tony Blauer, Tom Sotis, Jim Grover, and Craig Douglas can give you a few tips if you need it. You don't have to take it from me. I get it. It's fine. MMA stuff is what fills classes. Fist Helmets etc are expensive... I absolutely have zero doubt you can fight....I have seen many of your videos. ....but training for kickboxing or MMA is way different than training to defend yourself. You take it to the ground in the street and you get your head punted by the guys buddy....you rely on kicks and you get dumped. Ive got friends with plates in their heads to prove it. Fights are usually ambushes.....you train from that point....the back of the OODA loop.
Mike, what percentage of people attending classes like this are people who know you from RUclips? Are there a few in every class or is it a less common thing?
Icy Mike your describing I will never be technically good but you tailored to fromt kicks is good because it works for and it easy girls Hugh woozencroft and Leanne Sanderson from Nok s more self defence programme that suits my strengths are effective and easy to remember pleas by NOK
Side kick has to be thrown from a more or less bladed stance. Front kick can be thrown squared up. This is important for grappling. Side kick partially exposes your back, which in MMA or self defense is undesirable. Front kick doesn't. Practice kicking in a grappling environment.
You can get the complete Front Kick Focus course at hard2hurt.teachable.com
If you want to add a little power to your teep, touch your ass with your heel as you bring your knee up.

Thanks man!
First to improve my front kick, hooray!
I love how DJ (Mighty Mouse) used the front kick to mask when he was switching stances to a cross in his last fight with Adriano Moraes.
Same with Charles Oliveira
I always loved how DJ ( Dwayne Johnson) used the front kick to put boots to asses.

I seen/felt it from a solid roundhouse to the intestines. Lol.
For me it's not the solid stuff, I just release the natural gas.
amount of respect i have for this guy after the self defense championship is crazy. Regardless of his placing, for his age and size this man put up a fight against some very difficult opponents. Very impressed with him and how he carries himself

This is masterful. The techniques are awesome, but the real skill on display is the teaching.
Front kick focus course owners stay winning
You're a great teacher! The way you use imagery for instruction. I do miss Robinson in videos... Great video!
Icy Mike and Community, have a very great day!! Sneak in those front kicks!! Nurgle Bless!
A solid front kick and a good flashlight and you are ready for the streets!!
In all seriousness, you seem like a very good instructor!! I'll definitely be training that close range front kick technique!!

It was jared on this channel
I love the last bit sneaking up on setting up the teep. Freaking niiiiiiice.
Great work in that championship that kick to Seth made me jump lol love the videos
I never landed a godamnd good intercerptor side kick. Just spin side kicks. But front kick, o boi, its always served ON POINT.
This is awesome coaching! Making adjustments like the guy that felt better with the cross was cool to see!
This guy is a living archive of amazing fight tactics.
Good vid Mike. The front kick is criminally underrated.
What...?..!..?..! Wow, yeah, I'm going to buy that course today!

That's super cool that the Dojo is a mix of BJJ, kickboxing & Yoga! *We do E-K-A, Karate & Yoga.

Bravo Sir!! Front kicks are underestimated and, as you once again show very well, can improve and be very useful🙏💪👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you for the great info!!
Body right hook looks like a great hit also off that side step
I need to hit up some of these seminars
Duh
Icy Mike having a plan for the "fighter fist" pose is how you know he is a professional
I'm loving this. As a freakin, total beginner, casual, old timer, In totally have to be subtle about my movements.
Cuz I'm slow, but also short.

Teep beats everything.

Icy Mike traveling to the 5 boroughs of nyc
This is crazy advice, thanks coach!
Cool pointers. Love front kicking
That's exactly how i teach how to land it, good work❤
IcyMike with the rogue tactics!
Rogue class forever
Is it a coincidence the two cutest girls in the class ended up in the thumbnail and not the two big bearded guys?
This is a huge help, Mike- thanks!

First comment!! I'm simple, I saw front kick so I clicked the button.
ha icy mike icy little man mike you have chosen the wrong opponent my front kick is marvelous
I have a problem I look stiff when I do pad work or just in general. How do I relax while also being in a fight
I love frontkicks. One of the few kicks I am good at. I think I learned it in kungfu
Really nice one
Can you test a black jack?
Great tips, but front kick with front leg is not a particularly powerful kick, useful to surprise and maybe keep distance, now front kick with the back leg, that's a potentially ending fight kick.
You were in NY and I didn't know? Damn it.
Yeah i only posted about it like 100 times
While i enjoy most, if not all, of your videos, i keep wondering what happened to jay and cliff. Miss the interactions you guys had
Support side hip extension mike, c’mon. Generate your force through the floor man
Do more seminars in the bronx

Also... this was a kickboxing seminar, you doofus.
I said if it's a competition that's fine.....miss that part?
And tell me what part of my statement(s) is incorrect in a real fight.

I would guess 90-95% because i don't know why anyone who doesn't would be there.
Teach them the, "Oh no where are my keys method." 🤷♂
Very sneaky I like it
Awesome!
Seems off the back foot is quicker, more powerful and can be thrown from more distance.
wtf? you came to the bronx??? how did i miss that?🤦♂️
Not where you were supposed to be, playa. Start telling your coach to bring me back!

Leaning back does add power to your front kick. Sorry that’s the truth! Even doing it how you said was wrong.
Nice
You explain this perfectly! Awesome. Subbed and liked 👍 cheers from Australia
Fuck I used to train there

Icy Mikes a good teacher but the front kick is so ineffective. Just do the side thrust kick
lol
Yeah, never saw someone put it into practice.. oh wait, no, I did see it all the time. Interesting!
