You missed that one in Guam . They land going up hill and take off going down hill and off a cliff . Many GIs flew in and out of there in the 60's . It's a rollercoaster ride . You can feel it when you go over the cliff the air hits the bottom of the plane and up you go, with balls-a- tingling' .
@Max Wilson And besides, Gibraltar airport has been like that for decades now. With a population of around 35,000 people living on Gibraltar, everybody living there grows up knowing how to treat the airport. They don't need big heavy barriers at the crossings. And there have been no near misses as the video says. It's actually a very safe airport compared to other "secure" airports.
I was just at the Madeira airport. And yes, it is that scary to land there. Not only is the location perilous, but the winds are very high there. The landing was super rough.
I landed in St. Maarten and I also drove by Maho beach as a plane was landing, the jet blast blew a man in front of it and I almost drove over him... Thank God, I didn't.🙏
0:35 That is an air control tower on the right side, with red and white roof. Lukla has no radar or ALS, but there is a control tower monitoring all arrivals and departures and other things ATC does.
I'm from Madeira & neither me or any of my friends & family have ever had a problem landing or taking off from there. Trust me nothing beats those amazing breath taking views as your coming into land. Plane's arrive & leave that airport everyday. 😉
The runway next to the beach looks interesting because the planes have to get so close to the beach to land the plane. That airport in Greenland just looks dangerous as hell.
The airport of toncontin in honduras where i'm from is actually dangerous but i have never been there because that is the capital of my country where the airport is
I am from Honduras, where the Toncontin airport is located. Yes, the airport is somewhat dangerous but not too much. My sister was a flight attendant for 13 years on 737's and she is still with us. Yes, the pilots must practice a bit but there are many landings everyday by American, Continental, Avianca and other airlines. The airstrip was extended 300 meters so it is even safer now.
0:53 no, it's not!! The shortest runway is in Saba, only a 400 m runway! Courchevel has a 537 m runway! 3:29 there are, of course there are!! The airport is also a military base, so there are armed military personell!! Also, there are barriers for cars!
MAMA they have no choice you tucking moron. These engineers are forced to choose these locations because other places would be either too far away to be practical or even more dangerous. Do you think people just plonk a fucking runway down without spending 8 years in college and months even years planning the best spot for an airport
It's irrelevant. Not having a control tower (non-towered airport) is commonplace in small airports. Most airports in the world do not have control towers or need them because they have low traffic volume
As a pilot let me correct the terminology used in this youtube video. When the narrator says highly skilled, you can replace that word with crazy. In addition to being highly skilled, the pilot needs to be a little bit crazy as not to panic and keep calm while landing a large jet doing about 150 mph. Factoid, these pilots are usually the most friendly and cool people to hang out with.
Because it isn‘t dangerous. I feel bad for people like you who get mislead by fearmongers. All of these airports are safe. Space constraints also play a factor. Many areas are economically dependent on airports.
Ya forgot La Paz Bolivia. Because of its high level of danger, thin air, high altitude, and the fact that it's runway ends on a cliff, it's where Boing tests there new stuff to see if it can withstand a real life hazard.
It's not a problem for the people at the beach in Sint Maarten, people just always try to get behind the planes just for fun. I know this because the beach of the airport is the same as my hotels beach. But it is really loud and annoying when planes take off 😂
Hong Kong's Kai tak airport is also dangerous and yet extreme. Cause the planes flys thru various buildings and planes do a cross wind landing in order to arrive at the airport.
He makes the slope at Courchevel sound like a problem but the exact opposite is true. As with Lukla driving up the slope as you come in helps you slow down and going down the slope as you leave helps you accelerate. The slope makes the short runway safer.
McMurdo (Antarctica) is nearly ice/snow free during their summer, there are real roads that real cars drive on between McMurdo and Scott Base. It's not dark most of the summer. Antarctica constistently has 40,000 visitors per year and a permanent population of around 5000.
well, the Antwerp airport in Belgium had a special feat until recently. There's a road right behind the runway where traffic lights signals the regular traffic to stop when an airplaine is about to land or take off. Me, being adventurous and going to school every day long ago, I ignored the red signal multiple times with interesting results, no harm though. Just the illusion of danger. I didn't cross though when a jet engine would take off, they are usually with propellers.
He forgot the airport in Sedona, Arizona which got the nickname USS Sedona because it is like an aircraft carrier because if you miss the begining of the runway you go off the cliff

In my personal opinion...and anyone can agree or disagree as they wish...I think airports should not be built in such dangerous locations.
I don't understand why they do this. If there is no space for an airport, make another plan. Putting people's lives at risk for money. Makes me sick.
