      No need to check Facebook, Twitter, about pages forever. You only get confused quickly.

    I've also been using ProtonVPN for a while, Phil, and I like it. Speeds are good and battery usage seems to be about what you would expect. As a ProtonMail user, I feel comfortable with this company and how they continually work to improve their products while being very clear on how they handle users' data.

    I am using StrongVPN so I can use SSTP. Unsure why this protocol is not more popular since it uses SSL just like the very popular HTTPS. This means it is as secure as HTTPS, the backbone of ecommerce, and it traverses all firewalls which allow HTTPS, which is nearly 100%. Why is SSTP not used more often?

    I've had a lifetime subscription to PureVPN for about a year now but I (foolishly) rarely use it anymore. When I was using I found at least 3 problems
    1. It would not stay operational very long. I could never figure out why; the information on their website did not help (though I'll probably try it again).
    2. I found several sites that would not accept a VPN connection. Often this is because the VP exit point is in another country but I found it also didn't work when I set the exit point relatively close to me in the USA.
    3. Through some magic I don't understand, Netflix knows if you are using a VPN will not let you watch if you are. I suppose they could do this by maintaining a list of all the VPN exit IP addresses but that seems like a difficult task as I think VPN providers come and go all the time..
    I'm mostly writing this to see what your (and others) experience has been with PUreVPN.

    • @Moderndad
      @Moderndad  7 лет назад

      Some of that is inherent to VPNs in general. That's also why I'm not a fan of these "lifetime" subscriptions.

    But as long as my banking and emails are secure (which they are independently) then I don't really care if others see what I look at. To be honest you shouldn't either - because using a VPS I could argue that the VPN host can see what you are watching. There will always be somebody that can see - but why is that even a problem. I mean we are all looking at the same things really.

    I am looking at VPN as I set up a security camera system, and use the VPN for other purposes as well. While my current wifi router is Apple AirPort Extreme, which due to it's simplicity is next to impossible to set up a VPN. As I have looked at replacing it, stumbled across the Asus 1900P (current year model and is known by that model number rather than prior year 1900's had secondary model numbers like 66U, etc) While there is a 1900 and a 1900P, the P model differs as it apparently has VPN server capability built in. It is too new for YT video and can't find details on setup. But if it is acting as a server, would that negate the need for the free or paid third party VPN?

    • @Moderndad
      @Moderndad  7 лет назад

      Couple things ... Some routers let you do OpenVPN through them. (I believe my old ASUS router did this, too.) ... Others let you use them as your own custom VPN, rolling your own certs.

  • @RenatoLaporte
    @RenatoLaporte 7 лет назад

    Well, one thing to consider about VPN is that it will only hide your IP and encrypt the data until it gets to the VPN server, so it's a way to hide you from your ISP or from the public hotspot, you can still be trackable via other means, it's just a question of how far you want to hide the content you're sending/receiving.
    And although good vpns will have a no-log policy, depending on where the company is based or where the server is based, your data might fall under the jurisdiction of that specific country.
    But it's still better than nothing, specially if your ISP has the power to log your data or if you're using a shared network.
    I've used PIA for the last 6 months, I really liked it, but since my main use is on mobile (even if I'm torrenting) the PIA app has a terrible delay in reconnecting when switching wifi for cellular or vice versa. Right now I'm trying Nord vpn and it's app allows for a much smoother operation, but it doesn't have the adblocking feature and I could not set some apps to bypass the VPN connection.
    I'd say, even if you don't do torrent, look up for vpn that has a good rating among the community, they usually provide more security.

    I typically have my VPN on all the time on all my devices, but I do let Google Maps through the VPN as to not mess up GPS directions. I also have Project Fi so Google has full access to my phone, and only Google but in a way, I like having a record of everywhere I've been. If by whatever reason the authorities needed to ask me where I was at a given time, I would submit that record as evidence, though I don't think it has any legal standing. Better than nothing though.

    • @Moderndad
      @Moderndad  7 лет назад +2

      My biggest problem with the built in VPN, and Project Fi as a whole, is transparency. Aside from an a small about page of the VPN, you can't enable in manually.

    I then used a free VPN and was able to watch but the free VPN has low speed. I just used it to see if it got access or not.

    I’ve been using the free version of WindScribe and I’m liking it. Do t have it on all of the time, so not using all of my allotted gigs. Which by the way you can double to 20 gbs a month with the EXPAND20 code. I might upgrade to the paid version in the near future bit I’ve also been looking at TorGuard with has some really good reviews and the paid version is slightly cheaper than WindScribe, although WindScribe has unlimited log ons and TorGuard I believe has 8.

    Misinformation. You do not need to use a VPN to securely use MOST internet services on a public wifi hotspot. Your most commonly used websites on your browser of choice will most likely be end to end encrypted. Mobile banking, shopping etc. will be end to end encrypted if you're using anything that even slightly resembles a reputable bank or retailer.
    That VPNs allow you to browse secretly, without surveillance is simply not true. The VPN company that you use MUST know your IP address and MUST know the IP address of the site you're visiting (otherwise it couldn't forward packets). If you're using a VPN for privacy you are making a BIG assumption that the VPN company you're using is a) trustworthy and b) is doing its security properly. You don't have any real way of confirming either of those things.
    VPNs are useful. If you visit China they let you use Facebook (for example), but they're not the panacea you're suggesting they are.

  • @skatcat743

    ok so instead of giving comcast or at&t my information I give it to a much smaller company which may just be out there to make a quick buck. The part about open wifi is false because most things are running on https, someone else on the network can't tell what is going on. Eli The Computer Guy made a great video on how vpns can be more harmful ie what if the gov set up a amazing vpn with no slow down and free for anyone to use and now they know more about your data than they did before.

    • @Moderndad
      @Moderndad  7 лет назад +14

      Things on https are great ... Except for when they're not.

    • @japzone
      @japzone 7 лет назад +2

      Not to mention the fact that your DNS requests are unencrypted, and a bunch of other things.
      And as for whether they're out there to collect your information, that's why you research and ask other people. People in places like /r/VPN can help with that.
      At the very least I can't trust my ISP since they've blatantly said they want to monetize the information they collect.

      Matthew Rine That was one of the reasons I went with them. The answer is twofold. First, they're based in New York where the data retention laws are extremely pro-consumer(pretty much don't have to keep anything) Second, and it's just a small blurb in the PCMag(shout-out to those guys, one of the few comprehensive, non-vertigo inducing VPN review charts in existence) review near the bottom for some reason, the company has said they don't log anything outside of VPN on and off.

    I keep watching these videos and thinking I should use a VPN, but I keep reading the limitations and a price. I've used TOR for about ten years, the last 4 or so on Android (Orbot, Orwall and Orweb, then Orfox).
    Orbot even has a really cool feature, where you can route your hotspot through TOR, presumably you could buy another device with cash, only connect through this hotspot and be just about anonymous, even an NSA javascript exploit presumably could only divulge a 'real' IP of something like 192.168.1.1
    Sadly, my life is just too boring to make it worth the effort, I'm satisfied with making it difficult, I don't need to make it impossible for the American government (or even our government) to discover I'm the one googling how to get a few more seconds flight time out of a nano quadcopter. Or why does my daughter hate peas now, when she loved them last year...

    1st, where is the VPN based out of? If it's in the US it's BAD NEWS! 2nd, has it been breached? 3rd, will they provide the FBI or NSA ALL of your logs? Many VPN's have done this! 4th, what is their logging policy? Some VPN's run on RAM only servers which means if they are shut down or investigated all logs are GONE! 5th, do some back ground history of the VPN's history over time - are they stable? Do they track you? Most of the "good" ones are 3rd party audited to make sure what they say is FACT! I use a VPN as well but will not say which one I use because it's all "user" preference! Trust in who you select....What's the cost vs. being hacked and having your identity stolen and having a world of grief? Peace of mind and surfing safer to mask your own footprint! You have to look out for YOU! AVOID free VPN's!!!!!!! There is NO security there as they sell your tracking information to who knows who to make their MONEY! Like the old saying goes - "If you wanna play your gonna have to pay!" Do your homework! You want to install a VPN directly on your router and protect ALL your devices! Then on your PC or Android or Iphone you can run the local VPN software and be double encrypted to further "mask" your presence online....PROTECT YOURSELF!

    • @Moderndad

      Then you don't have to worry about sniffing you on Wifi.
      But that doesn't mean there's nothing to worry about.

    If your isp can sell your browsing history....and make $$$$$.....don't you think your vpn can do the same exact thing?

    • @radarvectors7100
      @radarvectors7100 6 лет назад

      Your info is only secure speeding thru the "tunnel" to your vpn....once Nord or passionmunkey sends it on, it's no longer encrypted or secure...land on your favorite torrenting site, and you ip has been logged

    • @radarvectors7100

    When using on a mobile device

      Only crap cheap ones. A good paid VPN won't care what you're doing as their job is to simply encrypt your connection.

    Most of these companies are super shady and you are giving them all of your data and internet traffic. look up “nordvpn Proxy Data Extraction Scheme” for example. One of the most popular vpn services basically running a botnet with your computer. Don’t fall for the FUD.

    • @Moderndad

      With Express VPN you will spend more time connecting and reconnecting untill you finally quit the damn thing. 100 dollars wasted and I gave it a fair trial with my last two trips to China and had constant trouble, save your money don' do Express VPN.
