Some of the issues mentioned:
- router getting overloaded with processes since it's basically a mini-computer managing data flow (caused by having too many devices connected to one router)
- router forgetting/too busy to update to a new dynamic IP address assigned by the ISP after the previous one expires
- router overheating due to bad ventilation / dust
- network noise (too many devices like microwaves/baby monitors/other WiFi networks at 2.4 GHz basically "talking over" your router. Solve by changing router setting to a less commonly used channel instead of 2.4 GHz)
- bad software => firmware update
I unfortunately live with my parents which means I'm forced to share wifi for their tv, can't wait to move out so I don't deal with that.
Are we going to loose ABC news network ?

It's a Catch-22 ... without an internet connection, I can't download a graphics card for my router. So to add to what Linus was saying, if you have a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal, try switching between channels 1, 6 and 11 as these are the only non-overlapping channels (i.e. something that's disturbing channel 1 will almost definitely disturb channels 2 and 3 and might even disturb up to channel 6 if it's a different 2.4 GHz WiFi signal set to a nonsensical channel like 3).
Also as Scotty said; you cannot change the laws of physics. If you absolutely need to do something online, ensure that you have a wired connection to your router or even modem (assuming you don't have a modem/router).
How to disable QOS? And what does that do?
@@Average3djoe To disable your router's QoS feature you'd best check the manual or search the manufacturer's website (sometimes ISPs offer modem/router combinations and put their own software on the modem/router, in that case check your ISPs website or your ISPs community website).
As to what it does; QoS attempts to give 'importance' or priority to separate data streams and divvy up your available bitrate. For instance if you're watching Netflix at 1080p it'll use about 6000 kbps so by enabling QoS the router attempts to, at all times, have 6000 kbps of bandwidth available for your Netflix stream.
This generally means that you'll always have enough to watch Netflix, but if your connection is particularly poor that day you might experience a bad connection on other data streams (say uploading a backup to a cloud server).
In turn, disabling QoS will allow each stream to just claim as much data as it can saturate meaning that while you're running a back up; you can't watch Netflix.
All of this does of course depend on how QoS is implemented, how far it is automatically setup, how much can be chosen from pre-made options in a menu, and how much you'll have to configure on your own. On top of the network availability to and from various services.
Very informative
It's also good to note that having little space around your router can impact your WiFi. If you have a cordless landline phone close by, or other wireless devices, these can wreak havoc for your download speed and cause an unstable connection.
thank you. I do have a cordless phone right near my router and modem. Now I'm going to get rid of it and see what happens.
I have a cordless phone next to my modem (which has a router built in) so I can move it. only thing is, is that the telephone cord plugs into the modems phone jack but i can get a longer cord.
Ok, so what am I supposed to do about it?

Please google Bradford Technology in Dallas Texas
If you're using a cable you're not on WiFi :D It's your internet disconnecting in that case and the problem is not just an unstable WiFi connection.
It may be due to the amount of people working from home and that resorts to a high demand on the Internet service provider giving out internet
I've had to unlpug my internet several times a day, EVERY SINGLE DAY. Sometimes I can unplug and replug only for me to have to repeat the process literally 5 minutes later
That sounds frustrating af
Have you fixed it? That keeps happening to me too
same here, isp says "everything looks fine from here" while i have to reboot, release and renew constantly just to use stackoverflow :/
what would it cost to cut out my isp and just have my own internet server ? xD
but seriously, how much ?
This is my problem as well, how does one even solve it? Getting a better router maybe?
most likely problem is just bad cabling either inside your household or outside at the "tap". Could be something simple as just a bad/old fitting on a cable or that fitting just not being tightly connected. Rebooting the modem helps temporarily because modems have this tendency that when they are booted fresh they connect to the signal well but over time if the signal is bad they will disconnect.
If you have a single family house, then the aerial or underground cables often go bad and just need to be replaced. Especially the aerial once because they're constantly exposed to the elements
Has little to do with "lots of people on the internet". Lots of people using the net might decrease your speed, but not significantly. If you're having constant disconnects its most likely either your modem, or the cabling
If the ISP is refusing to send out a technician to check on the issue, try this: disconnect your modem from power, call your ISP, and tell them you have no internet but everything is connected. The ISP will think that somewhere the signal was cut or something or something was unplugged and they have to fix it asap. So they'll send out a technician. The technician, once at your residence, could care less what you spoke about on the phone with ISP. His only goal is to make sure everything will now be working. So he'll check the signal levels, your modem, etc, and try to fix the issue if he can or if there is one
Sometimes there is a problem, and the ISP can see it, but they tell you there is no problem. Not sure why ISP's sometimes do this. Probably to save money because sending out a tech is pretty pricey. This is why you have to disconnect your equipment because then the ISP wont see a signal coming to it and therefore in this case they absolutely have to resolve it (you can plug it back in after they schedule for a tech to come)
I am a comcast tech
I specifically stayed up late on a work night to watch the Titanic film and have it time up with the sinking on April 15th at 2:20am. And this issue ruined my whole night.

If I download a graphics card on to the router will it improve internet connectivity?
Unfortunately that may not help, I already tried it and all I did was waste the day downloading it for no reason. Instead download a newer cpu (I suggest a Ryzen) that should help. Also don't forget to download more bandwidth, the internet companies never seem to download enough. If you do it right you should get a 400 gigabit download and upload speed like I have.

I am a 10 year telecommunication technician. Everything this man said is correct.
I work in IT. Unfortunately, not a lot of people understand that as fast and stable as the internet is, it doesn't change the physics of Wi-Fi.... if you have poor coverage at XYZ before, switching to a faster ISP won't change that. Information doesn't pass through the air more awesomely just because whats coming into your home is fiber rather than copper. Heck most people think the internet is just Wi-Fi, which is... sad :( 95% of routers that I've logged into have NEVER had anything plugged in to the LAN ports. Sigh.
I start getting aggressive impulses when I hear people (especially those I know) asking if a house comes with WiFi. It's almost as if having a router becomes a side-effect of having WiFi. And having WiFi automatically means having an internet connection
I am Connected with LAN still get disconnected at ip changes
And there's people like me who are plugged into a wonderful AT&T provided router via ethernet cable and it STILL manages to drop connection frequently...I've learned at this point that even hitting the reset button does no good, it decides in it's own time when it's going to reset itself.

Fuck them for banning you. That's WAY overstepping their bounds. It's the same as with us gamers having the RIGHT to not play the game. Banning us for leaving in the middle of the round is WAY too much. Sure, penalize people if it was during a huge event but during a casual match that's total BULLSHIT.
They don't ban you for leaving casual matches, they ban you for leaving competitive. Besides, it's not they're fault you don't have the tools to run the game. So your telling me that my microwave is a stronger router than my router. Wow the modern age is fascinating where microwaves is better sending data to my computer than a router.
Royalcookie Gaming cuz IoT 🤣
Well they aren't exactly in the same band, but microwaves "antennas " are 600 to 1200 watts while routers are well below this in most consumer applications. It makes perfect sense that "noise" from a microwave would make it difficult to impossible for the router/device to hear each other. Though microwaves are generally designed as "sound proof" boxes.
If your wifi goes out when you turn on your microwave, you need a new microwave.

Scorchy ikr
SheMakeThatBackMove Internet speed is typically measured in Mbps (megabit per second) which is different from MBps(megabyte per second). Download speed is the most important unless you’re uploading a lot. 10-12 Mbps is enough for regular internet browsing. For gaming and video streaming more than 12Mbps is helpful. Over 20 Mbps helps get rid of that lag but YMMV. If there are multiple devices say 3-4 people gaming/video streaming then 50 Mbps or over would be better. For some ISPs they’ll give you a certain package of let’s say 45 Mbps however, your connection can vary and can actually reach up to 60 Mbps on occasion (at least that’s the case for me) but again YMMV.
There is another reason why your losing internet connections, that hardly anyone knows about... If your losing connections randomly or a few seconds to hours at a time, and if your using a cable modem with a TV splitter to connect your modem or gateway. The splitter going to the cable modem is going bad or is bad. Replace it and reboot your modem and router and it should run much faster and your connections will be solid. You might have one of those TV Splitters outside when it comes into your home.
I’m using my data and this guys intro is so long get to the point my man! Thank thou😂
Important clarification: you should only set you router to channel 1, 6, or 11. Choosing another channel may seem tempting if it looks empty, but in reality the bandwidth of each channel means that you and your neighbors will actually have worse performance due to overlap. So, the best course of action is to switch to whichever of 1, 6, or 11 is the least congested.
If you live in the city and rely on Wi-Fi, a dual band router is a must.
Jordi Orlando 1,6,11 in America. In Australia there's 4 2ghz channels that don't overlap (last being 13). Upside? Many routers are configured for the first 3 channels leaving channel 13 relatively congestion free. Downside? Some older devices can't connect to channel 13. My roku being one

When my doorbell rings. My internet goes out. Still can't figure out why....
Buying a quality router helps too. I've found that the old adage "you get what you pay for" is especially true with routers. The old router I had seemed to drop the connection almost daily, so when I replaced it I did some research and bought one that was a bit more expensive. I've had this router (an Asus) for around 5 years and I can count the number of dropped connections on one hand. I went from a dropped connection almost every day to maybe 1 a year.
Consumer grade routers seem to be "for rent" equipment. You rent it for 3 to 5 y, the Wifi goes out first and in 2 y, the router doesn't turn on.
Now, you throw that into the trash and rent another router.
Sometimes there is no firmware update and you're still stuck on a bad deal... I usually get DD-WRT or OpenWRT firmware running on my routers where possible as I frequently see performance boosts (better streaming video stability, more bars on wifi, etc) along with many useful features.
Hey Linus, why not do a small episode about the world of custom firmware?
Because I have AT&T, and I use AT&T's router, which I doubt is more powerful than a super nintendo.
Its probably less powerful than an Atari 2600
Bibasik7 AT&T: Fast, Unreliable connection.
is the internet in america really that bad? i only hear bad things about at&t, verizon, cox etc.
That's why you get you own network equipment although I also use at&t stuff rn and I've got no problem maybe you just got bad luck
Max nah I've had verizon fios for 12+ years and gigabit no major issues
It's ALWAYS infrastructure failures OUTSIDE the house, and they happen WAY too often. What is the real cause? Why aren't current or former cable technicians talking about what REALLY goes on at ISP's?
Your acting is perfectly suited to old 1970 kungfu movies
lmfao
Like Linus said, check that firmware. I once had a router that would lose connection once a day. I found an update for the firmware and that fixed it. Turns out it wasn't automatically renewing the IP address due to some bug in the router firmware.
Step one, DON'T USE XFINITY.
david diehl fuck xfinity
david diehl my condominium is legit smart as it doesn’t even support fios or other networks. Kinda wish my dad bought a duplex
I’m using It
This is happening with my spectrum internet and fuck it, it’s dogshit
Ashley Houghton do you live in Texas
How to fix the 1. dynamic IP address issue? 2. Interference issue with other similar band waves from the microwave or other devices? 3. Software update-where we have to update software??? Knowing issues is not enough to fix them. Please make a video on how to fix them. Thanks.
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi has the most interference from microwaves, cordless house phones, etc... I suggest using 5 GHz if your router is dual channel. It is faster than 2.4 GHz but the distance range is not as good.
I’m in a middle of a ranked matched and I can’t even rejoin the current ranked match that sucks

Bruh my internet kicked me out of my match lol
In my house we have 3 different internets: Dlink (fastest) guest (second fastest) wireless-PC (okay when near)
Many use the Dlink because it's the fastest...
I use guest because it's often even faster than Dlink and now I know why
Thanks Linus :D
if your guest network and your Dlink are all in the same box, the only difference is anyone running on the guest network cant access devices on your Dlink network... realistically there all actually on the same network, just guest has that restriction for security reasons
DavieJones1111 it's faster than dlink because nobody uses it
I use d-link and my internet is still dying a lot

Techquickie: "...where its ventilation holes might get blocked by cables or dust"
Me: ...or cats sleeping cozily on top of the router, sigh
Or it could just be an ISP intentionally turning the wifi off wanting you to call a 50 dollar technician.
If your ISP is charging you to send a technician then you need a new ISP because hardly any charge service fees like that.
@@crackerjackrappr Problem being many people don't get to chose their isp.
@@blankkhun252 almost everyone in US has Spectrum and they do not charge.

ISP cannot turn off your wifi. This is fantasy.
HERE'S ONE!
Control Panel - Network and Sharing center - Change Adapter Settings - Ethernet (Active one) - (Right Clock) Properties - Configure - Power Manegment - DISABLE - *Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power*
After an update Windows might reset this setting and your net will keep shutting off constantly at certain intevals.
That moment when the video you're watching continues to play even when the wifi connection is lost...
Yeah. It's called the buffer

Actually, my biggest issue with this piece of advice is I don't know the last time I've seen a FW update for a router. Most residential based internet hardware that I've seen almost seem to be abandonware. Or is that just NetGear falling down in that part of customer service?
Open Source router firmware is updated more regularly, but requires some research to convert over to the new FOSS.
I have an ASUS router and that thing has updates once or twice a month
As far as unplugging and plugging back in routers and modems, why don’t manufacturers just program them to dump their memory when it’s a certain percent full? I’m disabled and manually unplugging them is a pain.
Who else was surprised when he was talking about "raiding" at the beginning and thought he may have been talking about rust.

Xfinity scheduled maintenance is more like throttling Internet service. Every week. Lol🤦🏽♂️ I get about two good days. Then Sunday it’s back again. I work online. It’s bullshit.
Do you put your modem in a closed or corner, and is something on the ventilation panels, if so, you are losing connection because it can't let out air.
Its EASY to detect throttling ...
Keep an eye on Starlink, low orbit satellite that will have better throughput and latency than copper or fiber.

Random internet outages that require a router restart that gets progressively worse over time is an indication your router is about to shit the bed. Which is my case with my 7 year old TP link. Upgrading to their, sorta, new Archer C7.
I mostly use wired connection at home because my connection is bad, so I got a ethernet switch for my room and connected it to the router. Really simple to set up, take almost no instructions.
I unplugged a plugged back in 20 times today its still not turning on. It does this everyday
your official meme dealer try calling your internet provider, if they won't do anything you might wanna consider switching providers
The weird thing is.
In my WiFi setting iT says that My internet download speed is 1gbps but when I download Its less than 1mb?
Call your isp
It might be telling you the max speed of the router, not the speed you are paying for.
It depends on the server you download from. Maybe the max download speed for that server it's 1 mb... usually on google.
that's the speed of the router, not the 'internet'
Poor routers being abused so often just laying in some dirty corner with cables and doing all the work #maketheworldbetterforrouters

i have added a 80mm fan to cool it.
Just cut the connector off the fan, cut a usb cable in half and solder the black and red cables and plug in the USB cable in the port in the router.
They really should considering adding heatsinks.
