  • The week before Christmas is a REALLY bad time for all these stories about Ring doorbells and cameras being "hacked." But were they really hacked? Is a Ring camera still safe to buy? And what can you do to protect yourself? Here's what's really going on - and how to stay safe while still using things like Rings.

I think the more scary one is when people don't speak and just watch. This could be used for blackmail or watching children. It's pretty jacked up. I will only ever have one on a doorbell. Never inside my home.

I have a separate issue to mention. For months my Ring Doorbell2 has recorded my USPS Mail Carrier delivering my mail to my house mounted mailbox next to my doorbell. All of a sudden last week my Ring stopped recording the mail delivery. I get my mail, but Ring does not record it. I did some searching and learned that there are WiFi blocking devices that exist. They are illegal. I suspect my mail carrier has started carrying such a device. If a criminal can disable your WiFi camera for less than $20 then these cameras are not useful. Looking for feedback from others. Google search it and see for yourself.

This is a prime example of why you don't put cameras in your house. If you put cameras on the outside then there is no reason for them on the inside. Also to come find out the lady didn't have the system secured it was easy to access from another source. All these cases that pop up like this are customer error.

If you don't set it up right. You need to set up a dedicated and secure Wi-Fi. Turn on use router, good quality anti virus and for God sake use two-factor authentication. Make up a e mail just dedicated not personal usage or business. Setup a Google Voice account or secondary number not primary number.

My grandma recently died and I removed her ring cameras from the home and if I wasn't the one that Installed them and set up her account on my phone (she wasn't that tech savvy) it would just be another waste of technology that no one would have been able to use. Instead of having to chase down the previous account holder to use a second hand camera or doorbell, they should make an option where they can disable the device in the case that a ring device is stolen. Ring needs to figure this out.

Your two factor authentication process is BS against my RNG database. No, seriously I have a life (generally involves making other lives better) but getting past authentication verification is akin to skipping rope. The burden falls on the company. I tell all of my clientele this, Closed Network If you're looking for security. Granted you'll be paying premium, however there are private security companies that will facilitate the necessary means to ensure your safety IRT 24/7. The whole idea of Ring is ridiculous in this day and age, the consumer is irresponsible.

Well one problem in your video is that if ring marked all ip addresses that have logged in or blocked them then people who are not home who go to check their cameras won’t be able to get in because their ip would get blocked due to it being different than their home IP address. That also can change if they have a storm and the Internet gets knocked out because many routers have dynamic ips. Just thought I would share some knowledge.

What does a computer key do and where can I find one and how much are they?

  • @ThinkerOnTheBus
    @ThinkerOnTheBus 4 года назад +5

Yeah, let's use a Password Manager and keep all of our usernames and passwords in one place, along with other sensitive personal details that some of them store alongside your passwords. It was found that on Windows 10 machines, many Password Managers, even when locked, were about as secure as storing passwords in a text file. In some circumstances, the master password was residing in the computer's memory in a plain text readable format.
One problem with two factor authentication (2FA) is sim swapping. Sim swapping is accomplished through social hacking. A hacker will enter a store pretending to be you, and then they convince a worker to port your SIM card information to a new phone, one that they obviously own. Phishing attacks can also be used to bypass 2FA through the use of fake login pages. Further, hackers have developed means to bypass the following types of 2FA: hard tokens, call forwarding, knowledge-based questions, text message interception, and push to accept.
Now, I am not saying to not use a Password Manager nor a 2FA, but I'm telling you to be aware of the risks and vulnerabilities, and research ways to protect yourself against the flaws in these systems.

For everyone who has a ring doorbell and also indoor cameras, the cring company when you called them for technical problems why you thing they ask you for your email and then they send you a code and you read it back to the person on the other line who is a representative of ring, thats how they get your consent to look into your cameras and they can actually see inside your home or where ever so really you are not safe and you never now who is watching, i asked them if that the way they can see if theres anything wrong with the sensor and they said yes they look thru your camera and can see everything. Theres no privacy.

People suddenly stunned because they made themselves known...
For years it’s been easily available if you have IT background and or intent to find out how. Most people don’t realize their WiFi can show anyone their browsing content, especially if you give your password to guests.
You don’t even need a password to gain access to cameras. Of course it’s very difficult, but to a skilled professional there are always ways around.

This is a little misleading. The weakest link in tech (!) is the cell phone. Next, the Router, then the device itself, which is only looking for a signal which can come via its power cordage or wirelessly, as in channel scanning. Which frequency Wi-FI will the device obey? Pinto product perhaps? So it comes down to shielding, and a lot of kids aren't going to understand how it is that bullying follows them home to their families.

Thank you, again, for a reasoned and informed response to the problem of IoT items being hacked. This is only going to get more common and important as more and more IoT devices are deployed. We are in the early days of using IoT devices, and we are still feeling around for what is a problem and how to address it. This is not a blame game, but rather a responsibility discovery. We are going through the days that establish "expected" or "responsible" behavior. We are establishing what is good behavior for manufacturers and users. Keep up the good work.

I have had Ring for almost 3 yrs, no problems.. I recently added a second location about a month ago, no problems until one Sunday morning around 1:15 AM . I alarmed it from the keypad sitting on a table 2 ft from chair while warching TV, then at 1:15 AM the alarm goes off, I disarmed it and checked everything, found no problems. I armed it again and called Ring about the false alarm, they said the history showed 20 pin rejections from the keypad and then a panic alarm entry setting it off all the while I was just watchingTV, and never touched the keypad. Ring said someone hacking in the closed system wasn't possible, and it was either a defect in the keypad or a glitch in the system. With 20 pin rejections and a panic alarm entered I'm nof buying that. I'm the only one here no one else has entry to the Ring acct or keypad. The mystery went unsolved Ring cust svc had never heard of such a problem but is monitoring the keypad for 2 weeks.

The onus is on Ring/Amazon since their database was compromised! Were their servers updated (patched)??? Hackers tend to HIT big target databases (ie Target for example) NOT individual users. The hackers use and sell the breached data to then attacked individual accounts. Unfortunately, the companies REALLY do NOT take responsibility. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), a US government agency, got hacked due to inadequate software updates. They ONLY offered ID protection for 3 years. Have you ever tried to CLEAN-UP identify theft??? Good luck ... SAD!

So many things that ring could have done to protect your privacy and they haven't. I have documentation of many calls to Ring to fix a problem with my ring doorbell which they tried sending me another used remanufactured ring doorbell that also didn't work all the time. I was on the phone again many times with them and no resolution. If a law enforcement agency has access to the cameras and just uses it for spying and collecting Intel and doesn't tell anybody, is that okay? And is that illegal? People need to realize that with today's technology expect people to be spying. The bottom line is if you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about in the future And if you want privacy get rid of all your electronics. Intel= power and 💰

Ring are just a load of rip off crap you should be storing your own video not being held to ransom to pay a subscription not only that but they Don’t work at all if car thieves or burglars have a jammer they record nothing at all.

Different passwords won't be a derent if the hacker has hacked into your Chrome browser, given them access to all your unser names, URLs, and passwords... IN PLAIN TEXT!
Yes! Every time you ask Chrome to "save" your passwords, it saves them in PLAIN TEXT, completely unsecured un any way.

Nice tactics: cryptic music, deep vocal tones, and paranoic atmosphere. While you do use fear, paranoid to draw in your users. People really need to use common sense, a stronger, lengthen password with alphanumeric lettering including symbols. How about cut off the music, and speak regularly, but like I said nice tactics to draw in the fear loving crowds. I don't subscribe to your methods, I am not controlled by the same fear you attempt to rebroadcast in your RUclips page. You do have good points, but the other garbage unless their is an agenda I will find you entertaining, and partly educational. I have completely disassembled my ring video camera, and added my other thought out exploits to forward to the Ring technicians, and development department. Have a good day.
