Gary, there are additional factors to consider: whether the VPN is tracking your browsing habits, whether they're logging your IP, their jurisdiction, the user's location, and whether they physically own and operate their own DNS servers. The best do no track or log, own their own equipment, provide powerful encryption, and can't answer to any subpoenas because the don't maintain the info sought by authorities. In addition, there's the WebRTC exploit that revels IP addresses between certain browsers even if you're using a VPN.

Great video, A little bit of additional information: A IP Adres does not have to be like how he described it can also be a more modern version called IPV6. Where ipv4 adresses are running out, ipv6 has more adresses available. A ipv4 adress looks like : 1.160.10.240 where a ipv6 looks like this > 3ffe:1900:4545:3:200:f8ff:fe21:67cf The reason why I mention this is because, if there are so many ipv6 adresses the adresses will no longer be linked to region or a city. Instead it will be linked to your personal device! They dont have to guess anything about you anymore, they will be able to track you down to the very device and house what you used to access the data. For this reason VPN is very important in that case then it is when you have a Ipv4 adress!
I could listen to you the whole day! If you'd been my teacher I would have learned more at school. No matter about what you're talking, it's interesting!! Keep on!

What's described in this video is a proxy - an intermediate node forwarding traffic to the server so that the server wouldn't know where the request came from. The essence of Virtual Private Network is different: the point is to have a network that is physically separated so that the packets from one machine to another go through a public network, but "virtually" it looks as if both machines are on the same private network.
i know that this is gonna sound like a stupid question but can you establish a vpn or a temporary vpn with a device on a public connection to create an encrypted connection?
Yes, you can establish a VPN or a temporary VPN using a device on a public connection to create an encrypted connection. Just install a VPN app from a reputable provider and connect to a server. This will encrypt your data and protect your privacy even on public Wi-Fi.
Very helpful video, to the best of my knowledge though the server dealing with the requested web page won’t have any info on you. Firstly you’ll have a private IP so it will only go as far as your ISP’s router. After that, I think as the request makes its way over routers, they only hold a copy of the last IP requesting it - stored in the routing table. So if the request hops across five routers, each router will only know the IP of the previous router. Eventually it can work it’s way back to your ISP router, which has a record of the router IP that made the original request, sending it to your home router, which in turn holds a record of the IP of the device wanting the page. I’m happy to be proved wrong here if anyone has good knowledge on how the data packets make their way across.
Thanks, much appreciated! I’m new to this VPN stuff but old in years. Love travelling as cheap as possible so am expecting and hoping this direct access for flights and accommodation will be worth the cost of VPN.
Free vpn can actually be often time a less maintance of security despite allowing users to gain access to other countires services and it may even be a lot slower than a paid one. The paid vpn gives you more secuirty, for example higher level of encryption much more stable connection and higher bandwits which would increase your internet speed when connecting through the VPN.
Full of information but he talks so fast. So hard for me to understand since I'm not a techy person. But overall it seems that the video do have a lot of information needed to know what VPN is.
So if I use a public WiFi hotspot, and I first connected to my vpn, then went to PayPal, what would a potential hacker see, just the vpn server I'm connected to? Nothing else? The hacker can't then follow the trail from the vpn server onto PayPal?
Once you connect the VPN the hacker does not see or can do anything, but you first must connect to the system that will protect you. You would'nt dress for work then proceed to get into you car and not have your under wear and pants?
The video mentions that you can make purchases as if you are in a different country and possibly have different prices as a result. What happens if you try to make that purchase using a card that is registered from your origin country and most probably can have the ID looked up too, will this land you in trouble or get your card flagged as suspicious activity, or simply get declined. if it's problematic are there ways round this like maybe using paypal or something to carry out the purchase. The thought of buying cheaper airline tickets is very appealing I must say.
Yes, I think he forgets to mention that. The data leaves your phone encrypted with the public key from your bank, so only your bank can decrypt it. They can sniff your packet but all they'll see in it is encrypted data.
most people do not know what a vpn is really for. Its true use is to allow you access to your private network via an encrypted channel. Your pc, could be in canada and your server in Utah, and once you vpn, it would assign you a private ip based off of the dhcp in the rooter that matches your utah private network, making it look like you never left the private network, allowing you to access services and resources. Now-a-days, most people use a vpn to surf the web because it basically connects you to someone elses server, then forwards all http and https traffic through it. You can do this very very easily at home using ssh server from bitvise, putty and firefox. You basically install the ssh server, take 3 minutes to get up and running, then use putty on your laptop, or whatever device you will be surfing thepublic web with, to port forward all web traffic through the ssh connection by checking a box. open up firefox and tell it to use a sox connection and there you have it, a encrypted tunnel to your own server and your traffic will be hidden:)
If you use Internet banking in a coffee shop, your browser is still using HTTPS which is secure. It uses public key encryption the same as it does anywhere.
Dislike for not explaining that in a coffee shop, when you connect to your bank you use SSL (https connection) so your initial communication with the bank will be encrypted with your bank's public key (and subsequent communication will be encrypted using a symmetric encryption) so only your bank can decrypt the data. Anyone can sniff out your packets but it'll be not much use to them since the date is encrypted. Just saying "oh, don't connect to your bank in a coffee shop because it's easy to intercept your packets" is a disservice, imho.
i got some doubts 1) does the internet provider knows that i am using vpn? 2) and does the vpn provider know what i am accessing to ? 3) is their any chance that vpn provider can know my passwords of the sites that i visit to?
The ISP might know if you're using a VPN when they look at the data and see random characters since it's all encrypted. Honestly, I can't give a definite answer to this. Whether a VPN-service knows what you're accessing will depend on if they keep logs, like logs about the traffic, bandwidth or the IP-addresses of the VPN-servers that you use. Always pay close attention to if they keep logs of any kind. I don't think VPN-services can see your passwords since websites typically use https on the login page. Which is also a form of encryption. Https prevents people from seeing what you're doing on a website, but say your ISP could still see that you've connected to the website (if you're not using a VPN).
I had a VPN and went to China, I was awoken in the middle of the night in my hotel room, my 2011 MacBook Pro fans were going full blast, Apple installed an update, but strangely it didn't put a notification and require me to go to the app store and decide to install it, it just installed it by itself... I had fell asleep and not turned the laptop off, so it was in sleep mode with the VPN on.It was NordVPN, which barely worked over there too ( Shenzhen).
People within the same building have compromised my laptop and has been going on for yrs would a new service provider and a VPN type router break the curse or using one of those dual screen lap tops at least distract their constant minute by minute spying using different scenes on either screens ? i tried a VPN TRIAL service once and it made no difference?
The cheapest and best way is to subscribe to a VPS service and setup your own VPN server. You get bothe fixed ip6 and ip4. With the option of buying more. This is especially advantagiouse if you intend to setup your own mail server where you need a fixed up and port 25 is blocked. Also you you can edit the revers DNS record which adds credibility to the ip address.
So if in use a VPN and look up said taboo subject you were talking about would my ISP still be able to see that I looked that up or just that some random person looked it up
just an FYI: from 5:00 when hes talking about anyone can steal packets on an Open wifi so don't do banking , that isn't 100% the case. if you're using HTTPS, then the packets are encrypted and only the website your connecting to can read them. Thus your passwords are safe.
***** exploits won't be affecting me only and won't be because of using public wifi so i'm sure you're the one who doesn't know anything about networking.
You can also set up something like SoftEther VPN on a server or computer at home, connect to it with an encrypted VPN connection and access your home network or the internet securely as if you are from home. It's free, pretty sweet and not really that hard to setup!
There is absolutley no need to use a vpn on public wifi in Euroupe or North America so long as the websites and apps you use are up to date. The only exception to this is if your trying to curcumvent restrictions. This is due to HTTPS a protocol used by any service that you should use. If you ARE connectiong to a service that dosnt use HTTPS (which I would recommend against), then it just becomes a question of do you trust the VPN's network or your current network more. For more information look up quidsup or Tom Scott and their videos on VPNs. They are both security experts who will explain it to you. Finally, if you stioll choose to use a VPN then set up an openVPN on your home/work network to ensure security and avoid poor data handeling.
Surely the problem with companies blocking access to VPN servers is that the servers themselves are relatively unprotected. Obviously running a VPN on an actual VPN server would slow things down to a crawl. But VPN providers will seriously have to do something about this. Move the servers? Change the servers? Something.
Good video, but it completely missed HTTPS. If you connect to your banking provider in a coffee shop with a modern browser and you have a green padlock in the address bar your connection is encrypted. HTTPS also verifies the endpoint so you know you are actually talking to your bank. In this situation VPN adds nothing.
Interesting info. About the pricing of products/services you may want. You say that prices can vary depending on which country you are accessing from (if not using VPN) then could the prices you get be higher if you use a VPN connection rather than your normal standard connection ? Has there been any analysis done regarding this ? You may end up shooting yourself in the foot with regard to prices if VPN should they be more expensive.
You say it is not safe to access your bank from an open WIFI at Starbucks or elsewhere. It is my understanding that if your bank uses a secure "https" that ALL your data, including passwords, user IDs, etc, are encrypted ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER before they are transmitted via WIFI link to Starbucks server. In addition, ALL data sent to you by your bank is encrypted by the banks servers, and can only be decrypted BY YOUR COMPUTER after it passes through Starbucks server and the WIFI link. You must verify that your bank uses "https" protocol, not "http". You can see the "https" at the top of your browser in the URL box. In addition, most browsers show a lock icon in front of the URL. If you click the lock, it provides some information about the encryption and server. I think any bank or financial company that does not use "https" will shortly be out of business. In fact, RUclips uses encrypted "https" connections. Google search uses "https". Encryption is becoming common, even among web sites that do not transmit sensitive financial data. You do have to be careful with an email program as they may not use an encrypted connection. However, when you are using a browser with an "https" connection you should be reasonably secure. Doesn't this "https" encryption make it reasonably safe to access your bank through an open server?
Gary, why didn't you talk about the possible security concerns with the VPN provider now having all of oyur connection data? Plus, if governments already require ISPs to give up user information, the next step might be (or perhaps already is?) to require VPN providers to do the same. This of course gets complicated when using VPN providers from other countries, but still, the possiblity is there.
well you don't even a service provider for using a VPN you can configure your own Router as VPN-Server (if you don't have a static public IP-Adress, just get a free Dynamic DNS)
Love the explanation but a little confused. I'm accessing my network from my mobile phone via ftp and using a VPN. My question is can my internet provider see the data that Is flowing back towards me ?

Whether a VPN-service knows what you're accessing will depend on if they keep logs, like logs about the traffic, bandwidth or the IP-addresses of the VPN-servers that you use. Always pay close attention to if they keep logs of any kind.
I don't think VPN-services can see your passwords since websites typically use https on the login page. Which is also a form of encryption. Https prevents people from seeing what you're doing on a website, but say your ISP could still see that you've connected to the website (if you're not using a VPN).
Charan Teja It all depends on what internet provider you have
Root PP
I had a VPN and went to China, I was awoken in the middle of the night in my hotel room, my 2011 MacBook Pro fans were going full blast, Apple installed an update, but strangely it didn't put a notification and require me to go to the app store and decide to install it, it just installed it by itself... I had fell asleep and not turned the laptop off, so it was in sleep mode with the VPN on.It was NordVPN, which barely worked over there too ( Shenzhen).
Thank you
People within the same building have compromised my laptop and has been going on for yrs would a new service provider and a VPN type router break the curse or using one of those dual screen lap tops at least distract their constant minute by minute spying using different scenes on either screens ? i tried a VPN TRIAL service once and it made no difference?
The cheapest and best way is to subscribe to a VPS service and setup your own VPN server. You get bothe fixed ip6 and ip4. With the option of buying more. This is especially advantagiouse if you intend to setup your own mail server where you need a fixed up and port 25 is blocked. Also you you can edit the revers DNS record which adds credibility to the ip address.
So if in use a VPN and look up said taboo subject you were talking about would my ISP still be able to see that I looked that up or just that some random person looked it up
Gary this is a most excellent presentation.Thank you .
Good explanation ,, thank you sir.
just an FYI: from 5:00 when hes talking about anyone can steal packets on an Open wifi so don't do banking , that isn't 100% the case.
if you're using HTTPS, then the packets are encrypted and only the website your connecting to can read them. Thus your passwords are safe.
Good explanation
You guys should make more videos like this, it's really helpful!
We do! Gary has a whole series of explain videos. Just head to the AA YT page and find the Playlist =) he's gotta have around a dozen now.
thank you so much Gary! God speed :)
Thanks, Gary! Clear and concise explanation...just what I needed to know.
the hospital next to where i live has free public wifi. I use it everyday and i already cut my cable company and flipped them off!
Haha
Though the Wi-Fi would be quite slow.
public wifi is not secure though.
***** exploits won't be affecting me only and won't be because of using public wifi so i'm sure you're the one who doesn't know anything about networking.
***** and for ms08 it still requires to decrypt the files on the device..and will happen to anyone not just someone with a public wifi
Its this time of the week!
Gary.
I've been in IT for over 20 years, I have never heard a router get called a rooter. I'm pretty sure a rooter is for up clogging a sewer line.
You can also set up something like SoftEther VPN on a server or computer at home, connect to it with an encrypted VPN connection and access your home network or the internet securely as if you are from home. It's free, pretty sweet and not really that hard to setup!
What is a rooter?😜
reminds me only of rooster :D :D :D :D :D :D
do u mean router? what is rooter
He must be a Canadian I guess. This is why the pronunciation difference.
》 RUOTER. 《

I was looking for how works a VPN when I want to connect two private network but this video is awesome 😎
Can it protect me from article 13?
You're amazing yup
@@cloudluxiferyt1822 nice
Thank you for a very clear explanation of VPN's. Now I know that I need to get one.
Awesome video on VPN service and how it works. Actually watched it all the way through. 😀
You actually explained it very well. Smashed it
IOT as well needs good traffic routing policies on your network
Surely the problem with companies blocking access to VPN servers is that the servers themselves are relatively unprotected.
Obviously running a VPN on an actual VPN server would slow things down to a crawl.
But VPN providers will seriously have to do something about this. Move the servers? Change the servers? Something.
Very good presentation, clear, logical. Recommended.
This is incredible, Short, precise information I sought. Thanks.

well done, very clear , concise , informative to the point. Professional, what you expect !!!
amazing explanation Gary , thank you
Thanks Gary, terrific job of explaining VPN.
Also opera browser includes a 100% free vpn built in and completely unrestricted with no limits on use. Check that out if you want a free vpn.
Gary is so good, keep this up! :D
thank you for your explanation☺
could you please have a description for remote access vpn?
Thanks for explaining this clearly and concisely.
Great vid and explained it to me thanx, but I understand that as my service provider no longer recognises me it won,t work and also my antivirus.
Thank you for an understandable explanation. So good.
best explanation i've found online, thanks a bunch!
Thank you again for your video. This one was very instructive for me.
This was so ridiculously well explained
Very detailed and clear explanation of VPN , Thank you
This guy's amazing as simplifying Love him
well you don't even a service provider for using a VPN
you can configure your own Router as VPN-Server (if you don't have a static public IP-Adress, just get a free Dynamic DNS)
Love the explanation but a little confused. I'm accessing my network from my mobile phone via ftp and using a VPN. My question is can my internet provider see the data that Is flowing back towards me ?
Nash Onez did you get an answer to this?
Great video. Thanks a lot for this lesson I learned so much about VPN, and I will definitely consider it to subscribe for one.
Thorough and clear explanation! Thanks!
