Pete was actually in a different edit of the video at the end, saluting Patrick as the ship was sinking. The only problem was that the CGI was super cringeworthy and pretty much ruined the effect of the video, so it was removed. I remember watching it when it first came out. ^^
This is probably one of the most underrated song of the 2000s. Especially for the final part, where all these featured artists come together, singing all the FOB's songs from the past (Elvis Costello, Brandon Urie, Travie McCoy, William Beckett and so on). It's like they are channeling all the power of music to push it through and don't let Pete and Patrick's suicidal thoughts to overcome them, unlike Donny Hathaway. I mean this song is simply a masterpiece. It deserved so much more recognition
I was desperately looking for a comment like this :'( After all these years the song still gets me. And if we add that according to Pete, the song was written from "Patrick's point of view" , after years of him (Pete) trying to understand his self-steem issues, because he sees his friend as someone exceptional and talented... It's simply triggering u___U Also, the fact that they did all these chameos with former friends, the songs that you mentioned and the props from the different music videos was just Genius!!!
Well, imagine you’re in his position, this man you’ve looked up to for forever, the man who signed your band, the man who helped you be you and be confident, one of your closest friends. Imagine this man writing a song about how he wanted to kill himself, imagine hearing that this song is about how he won’t. Imagine you’re Brendon and the very person you looked up to became so utterly human to you and asked you to be a part of his promise that he’d be ok. Of course you’d give it your all
Fueled By Sushi // Actually pete wrote this song. Pete was suicidal and extremely depressed and tried to commit suicide. He wrote this song for Patrick. He promised that he would never try again, and would never give up on Patrick, if he ever felt the same. He wouldn’t give up his own life, for Patrick’s sake. He’s basically telling Patrick, don’t go down the path pete did, or it will destroy him (pete). I think this is heartbreaking.
This video is basically how Patrick made an unlikely friend at sea with a seagulls and saves a ton of random people and then he has to let his friend go...i wanted to cry when the seagulls flew away..
Featured singers in the medley at the end: Headfirst slide into Cooperstown on a bad bet: Elvis Costello Grand theft autumn / where is your boy: Gabe Saporta Sugar, we're going down: Travis McCoy Dance, dance: Brendon Urie This ain't a scene, it's an arms race: Doug Neumann Thnks fr th mmrs: Alex DeLeon Growing up: William Beckett Hope this helped! :)
So Pete wrote this song for Patrick when he was suffering with depression and Patrick is like singing to him, so we have this circle of affection between these two people that considered suicide at one point in their lives, but decided that there was more to live for. I think this video really speaks about Pete and how he wasn't there physically and emotionally. I just really love this song and how even now 5 years later Patrick still gets teary eyed when singing it. [edited part:] I think, after listening to this a few more times and doing a bit more research, that this song was a promise from Pete to Patrick that he would never commit suicide.
He will always be underrated, there is no amount of people on this planet that could make him anything but underrated, fav singer and band and that will never change
Yesss! All the feelings! And I remember way back then how it felt getting the news that they were taking a hiatus. 😌 Glad to say that classic Fall Out Boy is still living on in my heart. ❤
+B Grooms This song is about Pete when he almost committed suicide. He wrote this down and Patrick started to sing it to him. In general, this song is basically an oath from Pete to Patrick, vice versa, saying they'll never commit suicide or harm themselves since they were both going through depression during those times.
I have made it a tradition for myself to listen to What A Catch, Donnie every night before I sleep, so the thoughts aren't as strong and overpowering. After all, this was the last mv recorded before they called hiatus. - The light up FOB letters in the ocean: From Thnks fr the mmrs mv in the hotel room and on the stage. -The remix of their top songs: Grand theft autumn, sugar we’re going down, dance dance, this ain’t a scene it’s an arms race, thnks fr th mmrs. -The sinking ship: could be a reference to the lyric in Don’t you know who I think I am? “We walk the plank on a sinking ship.” -Brendon Urie is in the mv *If you noticed anymore, comment what you noticed*
Brendon Urie just because you are losing all of your band member and you're the last one does not mean you can kidnap Spencer and make him come with you to see a Fall Out Boy concert, only to endanger him. If you kill Spencer, Sinners won't forgive you. Jesus Brendon, learn some manners. Patrick, Pete, Andy, and Joe are always having to bring you everywhere.
Now that I know what this song is about and why Pete wrote it and the fact that it was the last released before the hiatus and it has all their hits at the end and it's kind of a "goodbye for now" and that Pete was originally going to say "thank you" to Patrick at the end because it's about their friendship... yeah I'm crying. Puddles.
This song is so powerful. I'm almost in tears, Patrick does so well with it. It's been confirmed that Pete wrote this song for Patrick after his failed (thank goodness) suicide attempt in 2005, because Patrick was the only one there for him.
When this music video came out I thought they were breaking up and it was so emotional, now it’s December 2022 and they are coming out with a new album soon. They are lightening in a bottle. ❤
All the old references And all the songs at the end playing in the background It hits me right in the heart every time this song plays I have cried to this song.
add to this the fact that it was kinda farewell video before the hiatus and the fact that Pete wrote this song as a promise to Patrick that he would never commit suicide again, but the lyrics are from Patrick's point of view as he was feeling depressed at the time and Pete knew it and felt for him........ and the ocean of tears is on its way.......
Timothy Singletary no, his jacket was a different color. Would they really do that though? They rest of the references are Fall out boy not Panic!. It's possible
3:48 "Where is your boy tonight? I hope he is a gentleman. Maybe.... ...We're going down, down in an earlier round, and sugar we're goin' down swingin.' I'll be.... ...Dance, Dance. We're falling apart to halftime. Dance, dance, and these are the lives you love to lead..... ...This ain't a scene it's a goddamn arms race, this ain't a scene it's a goddamn arms race... ...One night, yeah, and one more time, thanks for the memories even though they weren't so great...." Too good.
well maybe someone splashed water in their face but nobody fell in the ocean. I was on the dock next to the boat the entire time. you can go to youtube and type in my name so see the boat in other videos....if you want to see pics of making this video let me know I have some and can make a quick youtube slide show ...cheers
Why there are vocalists that can make you cry for no reason just because of their genius singing? It feels like what their singing is true. Wew. This song really hurts.
Seeing all the other artists pulling him up from the boat, coupled with them singing the throwback lines makes me cry every time. This music video is literally a masterpiece.
Oh ha u are about to cry niagra falls if u listen with ear buds you will hear almost all the songs of the the album at the end he sings them quietly at the end in the background from sugar we're going down to arms race even thnx fr th mmrs
+Gage De Rosa its not even just him singing the previous songs though, it's loads of other singers from bands...including Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco!!
Joanne Jamieson Vera W Pete wrote this song for Patrick and those voices were to make him remeber all his success in the past and whats he's done in his life... and Pete isn't in the video because he wanted the video to be about Patrick :)
What people say: "New Fans like new music Old fans like old music Fake fans pretend to like old music Real fans like all their music" How it really is: New fans can like new or old music Old fans can like new or old music Fake fans pretend to like FoB Real fans really like FoB's music, and can like new or old Everybody has opinions, you can't stereotype them.
This is the best comment I've seen so far. FOB has change, they are different now. But ,hey, why aren't we just enjoy all the new and old music. I mean,FOB never made any bad song right XD?
Lost Kid Thanks :D I agree! I based this comment off of another comment I saw that said the, "New Fans like new music Old fans like old music Fake fans pretend to like old music Real fans like all their music" thing in it, and I was really annoyed...
Bewy C I know that one ! I had the same feeling with you. They talk about new fans and old fans, rock n roll , pop and punk. Then I heard Patrick Stump said "Different people love different music. " so I went to listen "I don't care" and light them(haters?) up.
Bewy C Me too. Nice to meet you =) Sadly your comment may no change those people's mind.(You know, so much comment on YT,but not many ppl are really reading or thinking .)
Ione Pailes OH MY GOD THAT MAKES SENSE AND IN A WAY HE HAD TO LET HIM GO DURING THE HIATUS SO THEY COULD'VE KNOW THEY WERE PLANNING A HIATUS SINCE THIS WAS THE LAST VIDEO BEFORE THE HIATUS
I had to do a paper in English once and it was about Poems (it could be a song because technically they are a poem) and I did this song and we had to write annotations about what we think the song is about (I already know what it's about so I kinda went from knowledge and picked out certain verses and stanzas that fit my description) and then we had to write a paragraph on what the song is about. YOU BEST BELIEVE ME WHEN I WROTE A PAGE. WANTED TO WRITE MORE BUT A PAGE. AND I GOT REALLY EMOTIONAL AND MY TEACHER READ IT AND GOT REALLY EMOTIONAL. JUST FLAT OUT EMOTIONAL. Gaw. This song means so much to me.

There's so many reasons why I love this but I think one of the main ones is Brendon. When he started singing dance, dance, wow, everyone else was soft and nice then he comes in with such passion. It's like Brendon was saying no don't leave, you can't leave, he just sounded so upset, he wa basically representing every fall out boy fan.
This was the last video they filmed before hiatus and the part where Patrick is pulling the items out of the water could possibly be my favorite part in the video because it signifies the different albums like "from under the cork tree" (the antlers from sugar, and the striped jacket from dance, dance) "Infinity on high" (the marquee FOB letters, and the gravestone at 3:29 very briefly from this ain't a scene...) and I think it's really unique.
Pete was the captain of the sinking ship. You can see him at 4:21 next to the smoke. They were going to do a scene where it was a close up of him going down (down in an earlier round) but they thought the CGI wasn't good enough.
I was 13 and Folie à deux, my favorite album in a whole world, just came out. And there were this song and this music video which sounded very much like good bye. Some time later my favorite band went on a hiatus and for a long time I wasn’t even sure if they ever come back. But they did. I’m 25 now and I’m very glad my favorite band is doing okay. I’m not listening to their new stuff but I still love them just because they were my first love and my best friends. And for me this song and this video is always about the end of an era both for FOB and for some part of me.
I suggest giving their new album a try. It's not the same as stuff from Folie, but it's still good and reminds me of that era more than their recent stuff.
i love the fact that patrick ends up saving all those people who were so close to dying, that symbolizes what their music does, it saves people who are so insanely close to the end
This song is about Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack too. This song hits home since my Dad,his brother's,my neices and nephews as well as my daughter have Paranoid Schizophrenia.God watch over the mentally ill and keep them all safe.
Oh thank god. I kept thinking, "the bird is about to leave him"..."the bird is going to drown"..."the bird is going to be trampled"...but it was okay!! I'm way too happy after hearing such a sad song.
I think the bird is representative of Pete it's makes sense since this song was written by Pete for Patrick telling how much he appreciates him and that he would never try to kill himself again
I love how at the end everyone is just quell singing their own song and then you just hear Brendon like DANCE DANCE WE'RE FALLING APART TILL HALF TIME!!
I'm not a really a depressed person and my life isn't as crappy as I know most other people's are, but sometimes I lock myself in my room, turn off all the lights and listen to this song while wondering what my life is and thinking about all the most complicated and sad thoughts I can muster up. It's as if this song is my way to release all my hidden and pent up frustration, misery and sadness. The line "I've got troubled thoughts and the self esteem to match" just always seems to get me when I hear it. It's like this song is a friend who completely understands what I'm going through without me needing to explain my emotions to them (which i'm horrible at). Anyways, sorry for ranting, I just really needed to let that out.
I don't know why but for some reason some of the regular comments where removed for spam *(I swear that was not from my doing)* but I restored them so please don't kill me X__X
This song felt like the end of the Fall Out Boy era we grew up listening to. A tribute written by Pete Wentz to his bandmate and friend Patrick Stump and encapsulating all their hits at the end sung by other famous Fueled By Ramen artists, this felt like a full circle. After releasing this album, they went on to have their hiatus and made a comeback after four years and released albeit a different sound but one of the greatest pop-rock albums of all time.
I get really mad when people say all FOB fans who started liking them after the hiatus are "bandwagon". Even though I only recently became a fan, Fall Out Boy means more to me than any band ever has, or ever will. They aren't just members, any more. They are family. And if you looked behind the mirror, on my bedroom wall, you'd find their lyrics there. You know why? Because they are always in the back of my head. Urging me on. Keeping me here. So thank you, guys. Thank you for singing to us. For inspiring me. And everything else you've done. Don't ever stop. I love you. And again, doubters, Fall Out Boy is the reason I'm still alive, so think about that the next time you think I'm just bandwagon.
This song came out when i was getting out of high school and let me tell you when i heard all the old song references i was brought to tears because in my head i knew i was growing up and those were songs of my youth when i was happy and care free. Thank you fall out boy for being there for me during rough times.
the first song I ever listened to by them was immortals but I'm still as big as a fan as someone who's been around since evening out with your girlfriend.
hi i'm back three months later with way more fall out boy knowledge then i probably should know but i'm pure fall out boy trash because i have all their albums and currently run a fan account on twitter dedicated to these four lovely people who somewhat ruined my life is just three months. alright, goodbye!
Oh god I just read on some website that the captain on the sinking ship at 4:21 who's saluting them is supposedly Pete Wentz and I don't think my feels can handle this anymore ;____;
Anastasia Swinburn Is that the whole point of that channel/show? To shit on people's hard work and try to be funny? Because if that's their true goal they're failing miserably...
My opinion is that Patrick has always been beautiful, inside and outside. Not only since he lost weight.
Totally agree he has such a beautiful personality and face
agree! ♡
Crazy For Fall Out Boy Oh of course!
Of course he does! He's the one and only Patrick Stump
Yes!
How fall out boy really started: it was the summer of 2001 and Patrick was fishing for musical instruments and band equipment
Josie Is Awkward hahaha
Josie Is Awkward And then Joe was like: "I know alot about fishing instruments and band equipment."

Sarah Luscomb And Joe was like "Do you want to start a band?"
Sarah Luscomb "yo I got a soul voice" and they were like "wait how do you have a soul voice?" And he was like "YEeEeEeEeEeEeEeEeEeAaaAAaAh"
In case you didn't know, Pete wrote this song for Patrick to promise never to commit suicide

Kalea Macon he should just become a member of fall out boy he just follows them anyway and I’d kind of an unofficial member anyway
Puddles.
It's fine to cry tears you'll never see
Great reference to Save Rock and Roll, the song that was supposedly the AFTER hiatus song, so yeah.
blink 182 did the same thing with there song not now before they broke up
actually, pete wrote it to patrick as a promise to never commit suicide. yeah, i know you're crying more now. sorry.
Still a reference
This song is so powerful. I'm almost in tears, Patrick does so well with it.
It's been confirmed that Pete wrote this song for Patrick after his failed (thank goodness) suicide attempt in 2005, because Patrick was the only one there for him.
i agree. but PETE attempted suicide, not patrick
Sorry I was unclear
it's ok. i knew what you meant i just am bothered by these things.
Guinea Gal I was unclear too. It's ok
When this music video came out I thought they were breaking up and it was so emotional, now it’s December 2022 and they are coming out with a new album soon. They are lightening in a bottle. ❤
Glad to know I’m not the only one listening to this in 2022

Jenna S. why is it
Cyanyde Gaming This was written as Pete's promise to not attempt suicide ever again. The seagull is a metaphor for Pete and how Patrick saved him.
Oh I knew that😆 jk thanks
Thank you Fallout Boy. For being Amazing.

All the old references
And all the songs at the end playing in the background
It hits me right in the heart every time this song plays I have cried to this song.
Yeah the references get me so much
The References are a shot Right through the heart
add to this the fact that it was kinda farewell video before the hiatus and the fact that Pete wrote this song as a promise to Patrick that he would never commit suicide again, but the lyrics are from Patrick's point of view as he was feeling depressed at the time and Pete knew it and felt for him........ and the ocean of tears is on its way.......

When Fall Out Boy references another one of their songs in a song I get really emotional for some reason.

What people say:
"New Fans like new music
Old fans like old music
Fake fans pretend to like old music
Real fans like all their music"
How it really is:
New fans can like new or old music
Old fans can like new or old music
Fake fans pretend to like FoB
Real fans really like FoB's music, and can like new or old
Everybody has opinions, you can't stereotype them.
This is the best comment I've seen so far.
FOB has change, they are different now. But ,hey, why aren't we just enjoy all the new and old music. I mean,FOB never made any bad song right XD?
Lost Kid Thanks :D I agree!
I based this comment off of another comment I saw that said the,
"New Fans like new music
Old fans like old music
Fake fans pretend to like old music
Real fans like all their music"
thing in it, and I was really annoyed...
Bewy C I know that one ! I had the same feeling with you.
They talk about new fans and old fans, rock n roll , pop and punk.
Then I heard Patrick Stump said "Different people love different music. " so I went to listen "I don't care" and light them(haters?) up.
Lost Kid I love it when I find people on the internet with a brain larger than the size of a peanut.
Bewy C Me too. Nice to meet you =)

Actually, Pete was supposed to be in in, saluting to Patrick while the ship was sinking, but it didn't look good so they removed.
Ione Pailes well, fuck you too *cries a bucket of tears*
I can't imagine how it was for the fans at the time this song was released, this is truly one of their masterpiece

There's so many reasons why I love this but I think one of the main ones is Brendon. When he started singing dance, dance, wow, everyone else was soft and nice then he comes in with such passion. It's like Brendon was saying no don't leave, you can't leave, he just sounded so upset, he wa basically representing every fall out boy fan.
its been 7 years, im still not over this song
What are you talking about? It's still 2009. Your argument is invalid.

Same here
He really does have a soul voice :'(
NerdyWolf sounds like soul
Remus Nyx and they put it in the song and it was like WherE iS yOUr BOY tONigHt
Oh shit I didn't notice
Yeah I've seen that scene and omg i couldnt stop cryinggg

They used to have that in the video idk why they cut it it wasn’t that bad. Not like it’s supposed to be a big budget film or anything

@@xycrypt I did! I think it’s genuinely great and for me personally felt like seeing an old friend after many years :)

Well fuck.
Oh thank god. I kept thinking, "the bird is about to leave him"..."the bird is going to drown"..."the bird is going to be trampled"...but it was okay!! I'm way too happy after hearing such a sad song.
I think the bird is representative of Pete it's makes sense since this song was written by Pete for Patrick telling how much he appreciates him and that he would never try to kill himself again
the amount of symbolism in this is just
ooF
That's what the song is about isn't it? Life.
I don't know why but for some reason some of the regular comments where removed for spam *(I swear that was not from my doing)* but I restored them so please don't kill me X__X
***** Pete is already at the ship that is going down.
MY LITTLE TURTLE IM SO EMO HALP
This brings tears to my eyes and I don't know why
This song felt like the end of the Fall Out Boy era we grew up listening to. A tribute written by Pete Wentz to his bandmate and friend Patrick Stump and encapsulating all their hits at the end sung by other famous Fueled By Ramen artists, this felt like a full circle. After releasing this album, they went on to have their hiatus and made a comeback after four years and released albeit a different sound but one of the greatest pop-rock albums of all time.
I feel like this marked the end of an era in their music.
i think that's what the songs in the background at the end of the song means
I like how they have old hits as the back round music in the end
This is beautiful
Same. Nearly the same reasons too.
