Have I Found The PERFECT PAIRING? // Why OCTATRACK MK2 + DELUGE is a POWERHOUSE

  • I'm exploring this beautiful combo of Octatrack Mk2 and Deluge today as I also run vocals though the Deluge. First song I made with it is, if you don't mind me saying, a BANGER!
I also discuss the pros and cons of the Octaluge, how these two machines compliment each other nicely / ponder on how much of a live electronic performance should be live vs preprogramed and how much is perhaps unnecessary / and finally a walkthrough and live performance of the first half of the song I made with this.

Great jam, and the voice adds a lot to it! I think there are no hard rules about how much you arrange in advance when singing over a production, since singing is its own skill by itself. You don't want to purposefully train-wreck your set by making the live arrangement too complex, and it's okay to keep it simple at first. It's a practice developed over years and I don't think people should avoid performance just because they're worried about too much automation. The most important thing is making it engaging for the audience, however you want to do that.

For my own version of the OctaLuge I use an ipad with audio interface and the audio of the deluge goes into the ipad where you have infinite fx and mangling capabilities. And the deluge can sequence everything

Super cool video as always! I agree that live playing and interacting is so much more satisfying that having everything pre-sequenced. (You might as well push play and walk away at that point)
I like pairing my Deluge up with my SP-404-MKII for sampling and effects (sometimes including the Microcosm or H90 for more effects processing). It's the perfect blend for me between sequencing, sampling, and live playing.

I went to a show that my son in law did as a one man band. All of the acts had some mix of recorded / sequenced parts with live playing.
My SIL plays guitar and sings and I think that playing a keyboard or guitar adds a lot of interest.
The other weird thing was my reaction to playing parts from computer vs sequences. One of the acts had a Sub37, but it was entirely played by sequencer. Practically, there’s no difference between that and a backing track, but it was definitely more interesting to see the instrument. I think you’re covered by all the blinking lights; but dragging something along to play some leads with might be worth the weight.

Since Deluge already has a sampling feature, it's a good idea to use it with an external good synth instead of Octatrack.
And any MIDI controller (like Akai Midimix or Novation Lauch Control) for the performance part.

You just described why I write, record and build my rig with an entirely live focus. I get VERY bored at electronica based shows but not so at trad instrument based ones and long ago realised that was down to the generative and sometimes soul-less performance of the electronica artists. The days of Autechre/Aphex scrabbling to gaffer tape a speak-and-spell to a casio sampler mic input mid-breakdown have been replaced by a button press or a sample load...and I miss that visceral play!

I performed live a while ago with my deluge and my 404mk 2. I essentially was triggering different clips on the deluge - conducting the orchestra as it were - then using the 404 with a few banks of texture samples and risers/fallers to mask transitions between tracks. I think that balance worked well in terms of ‘doing stuff’ and ‘sitting there with my arms crossed’ :-)

It's great for what it does, really great. But its sound engine (synth) is pretty mediocre, it will start to choke if you have more than a few tracks with multisamples, dynamic range of the outputs is not great, you can easily make it distort (bad, digital distortion) just by using internal synth. I am not so enthusiasitc about open source, it is unstable and a lot of hassle, maybe if you don't use Deluge live it's ok. Synthstorm themselves stopped updating it (no official firmware updates for a long time). Having said that, I think it's the best all in one portable device out there. I use it a sketchpad.

@@mdeerocks6792big agree. My deluge is sitting, unused, unloved in its case, and has been for some time. Not sure.b

Great video! And a response to your live performance question, Martin Garrix is a "USB DJ", i.e. he just pre-bakes the performance and presses play, and I think it's easy to bristle about something like that, but the people at his shows have a blast regardless. They're there because they love his music and want to experience it with him and other people. If the music is good and fun, I don't think people are gonna care how improved a performance is.

    • @Bladexngt100
      @Bladexngt100 6 месяцев назад

While I agree that in the end having a good time is the ultimate goal, there is something to be said about having a musical conversation with your audience. I am an old school trance DJ that played live with records only without an beat matching and I found queuing music in response to the crowd made it more special for me and for the crowd.

  • @IntertemporalTraveler
    @IntertemporalTraveler 6 месяцев назад

On the note of the live performance, I think it's really all about showmanship and how good you are at it. For example, I haven't started doing any live performances, yet, but my thought was that a mixture of live and automated elements is the way to go. This way you can surprise the audience by sometimes having songs where you're sweating and doing a lot of work, only to walk off stage to get a bottle of water while they watch the lights turn on and off on your gear while a symphony comes out of the speakers. Then you can jump into a half n half song. It's the idea of showing what's possible technically with modern gear and showing that all that technical stuff is backed up with real skill and you are the master of both.

I've done about 10 DJ sets in between end of 2022 and 2023 - I used to be a front-singer in a reggae band, and I decided to transition the hardway, by using another alias and showcasing my beats as a DJ.
It was great because I was ultimately a beginning DJ, and the show was fun enough, compared to singing, which is something I am very self-conscious of my technique etc, because I've done it for so long.
Today, I'm planning a come back as a singer, being in a trio where I mix backing tracks and two friends are percussionists/ back-up singers.
I think ultimately it's about having fun doing it, as honestly if it's a hassle to bring all the synths out and to connect them on stage (with all the risks for equipments) you might as well just not go.

  • @jantuitman

Wow, I really loved the singing! It reduces the need for tweaking with your hands because you can also concentrate on adding expressions with your voice. One thing the octant rack probably van do is record yourself and create a backing voice loop on the fly? I recently did a live performance with only the Deluge, and I installed the latest beta with community additions. One thing that is in it is a grid variant of the song view. The columns become the tracks and all variants of 1 track are below each other. I had 2 instruments (piano and clarinet) for which I had a couple of variants each, different melodies. So I could improvise pretty long using different variants. I also had a 3rd track that required the piano and the clarinet to be turned off completely, it contained recordings of my modular and it was in an entirely different key. So I could transition over to it, with the same drums and some background sound like rain continuously there, and then start the new sound.

  • @willp3754
    @willp3754 6 месяцев назад +1

I endorse this combination. Use it myself. Few ideas: 1) Live performance should have you doing things that cannot be easily automated. For example, opening a filter while a pattern plays several times. This is tricky to automate on either device; 2) You may have more live control of the deluge synths than you realize. In song mode, hold down anywhere in the row and you can use the synth controls up top for that synth without entering the clip; 3) You can use the octatrack sequencer to sequence the deluge, for anything that can be midi learned. So... one note from the octatrack can activate an entire group of clips on the deluge.

Many commented already on the live question. But I need to add something that I'm sure will click with you... Be guided by the pleasure you have in playing, wether it be launching clips or playing the entire song and singing. There no doubt that an audience is sensitive and receives the joy you take in performing for them.
And believe me, it's so cool to open a filter for building up or transitioning to another part.
Maybe you can discuss with Rachel K Collier, who is in my opinion masters electronic live with singing like no one else.

That's a really nice track man. Gives me mad Radiohead and even a little bit of The Mars Volta kind of vibes. I personally think the best way to perform with the Deluge is to jump back and forth between arranger and song view. Triggering sections and using arranger to twist more than two knobs at once, then hanging out in some of those sections in song view before jumping back to another section. Kind of hard to explain here in the comments, but yeah. Either way, you're onto a winner with this setup :)

These type of video's are nice!
And TBH, I don't think 95% of a 'regular' audience will care nor notice if you press play and move some knobs 'or' need to have more interaction with your gear to make the tracks.
For me, I would choose a huge portion of 'safety' and make sure that the backbone of whatever is playing is always doing what it is supposed to do and I only have to select the right scene or something and just tweak some knobs, let a scene play longer (if the crowd likes it), mute some stuff and maybe, maybe, play something live.

I think a good reference would be Atticus Ross' role in Nine Inch Nails' most recent live shows. Previously NIN would have preset backing tracks played from CDs/computers. After Atticus joined the live band, he was put in charge of triggering those tracks as clips in Ableton/Maschine. So as opposed to one long loop per track, they're set up as distinct clips per each section of the song. On top of that, any filtering, sending, and muting of those clips is also handled by him. Truthfully unless you're seeing the performance it's not always super obvious, but it adds that level of danger to the performance.

@@MidlifeSynthesist I enjoyed it! fwiw, I switch the brain around. I run the Deluge as the brain sending program changes / midi to all the other gear. I've added a Shik n32b to have dedicated knobs for performance and use song view (not arranger view) on the deluge. I think song mode is that dividing line between music performance and music production (arranger view).

Yes. You need some risk when performing. As such, I always trigger patterns manually and have my virus snow or Blofeld doing the midi parts. Drums only on sequencer (polyend play or iPad). Thus allowing for lots of live sound manipulation and general squelching of farty bass.

The comparison to a rock band is always gonna be a tough one, since you're all by yourself compared to the limbs and brains of multiple people. If you wanna see what a real techno live set should be like you should definitely go to a Karenn show if you get the chance. The more you move away from multiple people, the more you are gonna have to sequence and automate and at that point the question becomes, how much do you really need to be "real"? Don't get me wrong, a Colin Benders-style giga set-up is awesome, but a lot of people that have been doing live shows for a long time literally just seem to launch clips in Ableton. Henrik Schwarz, Frank Wiedemann, Gui Boratto, KiNK, are just a few examples that still bring a great live set to the table regardless.
I guess adding in generative synthesis could be the way forward for that more personal connection, and there are lots of interesting ways to patch in expression in modular set-ups. I think that'swhy the aformentioned Colin Benders went with such a crazy set-up since he comes from a live-music background as well.

You like radiohead. ??? ;) Great tune, and yes that is performing for sure - esp the singing. If the sequencing is too much on rails though, folks may think you are singing to a backing track. Nothing wrong with that - it's a great tune. It's also something I'm struggling with.

yes... you invited comments about live performances of pre-prepared arrangements. here goes, & sorry if this is long-winded:
my band is almost totally improvisational, but there are three of us. I'm a bass player, & the other two are guitar & drums, & we all dabble in electronics, with me being the technician that has to string it all together, & in different ways for each session depending on how it went last time, what new toys we've got since & so forth.
when we first got (re)started at this nonsense thirty years ago, going on stage absolutely cold turned out to be a bad idea. more than once.
so we agreed that we'd do 'cover versions' of things that people might be familiar with from our published works, videos & whatnot. these would test the equipment nicely & get us warmed up for extemporisation-proper.
the key ingredients for live input: keyboards, sophisticated use of midi controllers to alter any & all possible parameters in the synths *&* in the sequencing. my peavey midi bass. things that people haven't seen before, that look weird- the mellotron, the notron... our guitarist & his trickery. a real drumkit.
the sequenced parts always, *always* contain elements that are input on the day, & to this end we've always used hardware step sequencers alongside whatever is playing the more arranged bits (& this is never a laptop- the laptop I have near me on stage is a multitrack recorder, nothing else.)
so the advice would be to mute at least one of the parts in your arrangement, & play it manually, changing it as & when you want, but in line with the main arrangement.
having lots of midi CCs whizzing about from something like a faderfox or a doepfer pocket-controller allows you not only mix/pan (which on its own is essential if your carefully crafted arrangement suddenly sounds wrong because of room acoustics or whatever) but all manner of timbral changes, effects levels.... we also use them to control things like the pattern length of riffs that are being made up on-the-fly using one of the hw step sequencers (doepfer maq, sequentix p3, notron, & so on). as well as fixing the sound of the arrangement to suit the circumstances, this allows you to nuance the arrangement as the mood changes.
so both of us that are primarily involved in the sequencer parts have this kind of control.
my oppo drives the maq, controlling the pattern lengths & pitch output of each row, & the sound of the instruments they're playing (doepfer PC).
he also has two 'live' keyboards.
(I send midi commands from the deluge to a midihub which processes the output of the maq, so that this all stays in key & can be remotely transposed, even while the oppo is tweaking it- he doesn't need to worry about staying in key. this is the latest in a long, long line of strategies allowing us to use the maq live- it has no scale-gen of its own).
the arranged part currently lives in the deluge, though previously I have used an MMT8, a QY70 (!), sequentix P3 & cirklon, emu XL7, octatrack....
with the deluge, I can have far more immediate control over the sequenced parts- dropping out of arranger mode into song mode so that a section loops for as long as we want to extend it for, then dropping back into the arrangement when it's time to move on. the octatrack arranger has similar functionality.
all the while, I can control the mix & timbre of the deluge's sounds, or those of anything being sequenced by it, using CCs. (doepfer again, but also controller keyboard).
I can play live parts on the deluge using a keyboard. there's a 1010 blackbox nearby with its own keyboard/controller. peavey midi-bass.
but I can also dig into any & all of the deluge parts & mess with them, & if I want to play with a pattern & then return it to some saved state, I can clone it quickly & easily. I can create patterns from scratch, knowing that the deluge will keep them in key. some of the patterns invoke the internal arpeggiator, & some of *those* notes have different probabilities or iterations set against them, so there's a generative thing going on too.
on top of that, there's the live audio input on the deluge- I have a mixer send going to that, & if I create a synth track with the input as its 'oscillator', I can process anything that's on the mixer, including sending the deluge's own output back into it & transposing it slightly so that the familiar "fabric of space & time" eventide harmoniser is invoked.
I've known of live acts- big-name rock bands- who rely on playback (I once modified a changeover device that sat between a main/standby pair of protools machines, in use by a major label act touring europe). their system allowed any of the on-stage musicians to be heard live or mime, at any point in the set..... they had choreography to worry about, y'see....
point is, it's a matter of comfort & confidence, ultimately.
if you have all the parts there, you can either opt to play one of them live, or concentrate on embellishing it with timbral & mix-effects tweaks, or an extra played-live part.
but the audience won't engage with the music unless they sense that you are deeply involved in it, & there is (quite rightly) a suspicion when there are laptops there.
IMHO, even DAWless live-rigs need an obvious-looking live input of some sort, & (call-back to the neck-brace gag) hunching over a handful of knobs that take up a few square inches of table-space is not a good live spectacle.
& finally- yes, less is more. you might turn up with a symphony in your little boxes there, an absolute banger, but the audience are going to remember the guy with the acoustic guitar who poured his heart out in front of them. thin out the arrangement so that they can hear the human in there, & be prepared to be that human in front of them, musically speaking.

Sensual song! Speaking of setup, you may want more nipples 😊 Switching patterns does not make it feel more live, just distracting, and mechanical. Twisting more knobs, holding hands around nipples, would make it more intertwining. Maybe playing some keys for a solo in break. So watching is a flow. Think of Stephan Bodzin. Only one thing, you have better mail instrument - great vox! The rest should be supplemental adding _unrepeatable_ elements to performance, with eargasming twists of the knobs.

Hello Tyler. I’ve never supported knock offs or copies of any kind. When a certain B company copied a popular midi controller, I even called them out on a video. As far as I know, there are many companies that make similar desk top stands (KV Gear and Headliner for example), just like many companies make nearly identical monitor stands, keyboards X stands, microphone stands etc. I don’t know that any of them are the original creators of the design, but I would assume that would be patented and easily provable if it is the case. Analog Cases have a pretty solid track record for making quality products and that’s why I accepted the sponsorship. If it is proven properly that any of this is indeed a knock off of an existing product I will happily take the add down. I will contact Analog Cases asking about your comment. Thank you watching👍🏼

when it comes to live playing, i found perfect balance in setup where 1 “song” (or i should call it “track”) is exactly 1 pattern..
what i do is muting/unmuting individual tracks on pattern and i tweak parameters .. after few minutes of playing with pattern, i just transition to next pattern (eg. next track) …
core of my setup is digitakt (drums, bass, fx, voices) and digitone (melodic stuff) .. 1 project is my whole set and i just go from patten to pattern …
Currently thinking about somerhing as master fx processor for more smooth transitions berween patterns (probably will pick sp404mk2 for this purpose, analog heat fx is out of my budget). Also considering to adding second digitone (or more budget alternative - micromonsta) to setup cause sometimes i ran out of polyphony :-) .. i think that would be final version of my live setup - tried many combinations of gear during recenr 2-3 years (even octatrack) but always tend o return into this core setup and method of live performance ..

You talk about the boundary between presets and improvisation as if it's the line you want to be ‘just’ the right side of?? I think this is the line you should be trying to steer as far away as possible from. Surely 'learn your instrument'? Stop saving tracks and presets, stop writing down numbers and track lists, stop looking for the next gear combo that you think will make you perform like Apex Twin. Learn to play what you have .... until your fingers bleed. Just look at any good musician who plays a 'traditional' instrument, cello, piano, whatever…. put them and their instrument on stage with no sheet music and say GO, they’ll still raise the roof...because they truly know their instrument. The ability to improvise is key. Another bit of gear or alternative setup is just Polyfiller™ in my eyes. Still love seeing all the new tech and your experience with it, keep up the good vids.
