A remake of FF7 30 years after release was never going to be perfect. It was all about whether they made the philosophically correct design choices - and they did. Every last one. Some of those choices werent great tho (whispers).
It was as close to being as perfect as it could be on a level I never thought they could hit, though. Genuinely shocked how good it turned out. I loved Remake, but Rebirth took everything to another level.
Rebirth was a joy to play. I accept some of the criticism but I adore this game. Disc 2 & 3 hold my favourite part of the story so I am eagerly awaiting the final instalment. Can't wait to hear Judgement Day recreated
I love the game. Currently on my 4th run. This game is carried by its FANTASTIC character moments and incredible music. And like you said this is the best battle system in the entire franchise. It's just so darn satisfying.
The first time I found the piano with the song notes for On Our Way, I was wearing headphones. As I started playing the minigame, I was so overwhelmed that it made me tear up. It was just so beautiful. That moment along with the Grasslands Theme will always live in my heart.
Fantastic video! 💯Rebirth is my favorite Final Fantasy game of all time. It is one of my favorite games ever and my personal Game of The Year. The story, music, pacing, open world, combat, exploration, character development, art design, and emotions were all absolutely amazing.
5:40 no doubt. I took a 3 months long break before I picked back up on ch 9 of my hard mode play through because I got “stuck” on a boss. Beat it in 2 tries despite the hefty break. Then proceeded to cap off my hard mode run and platinum the game but was thoroughly impressed with how easy it was to jump back in
On the whole, I loved the game. It was a HUGE departure from part 1 of the remake project, and largely a successful one. My main criticism is, at times, which you touched on in your video it did indeed lean a little too hard into the anime-isms. It felt so tonally different from the first, and certainly felt different (in tone) to the OG. But it was a crazy ride! Ultimately I loved it. I hope they scale it back a bit for part 3, which they...kinda have to, at least tonally, cause some wild and serious shit is coming. A few scenes were worse, a few greatly enhanced. They butchered city of the ancients, sure it'll be in the next game, but it absolutely should have been explorable in Rebirth, too. Great video dude. Love the enthusiasm. Subbed.
Yeah I think once you wrap your head around the fact its going to be a little less serious and more silly in tone compared to Remake... but I also hope they reign it back in for the finale. At this point we've seen the characters go through so much and grow, so it would be a good time to really push for a dramatic finale rather than make it similar to Rebirth.
I love Rebirth, I think Remake was more like the exposition and the first major subplot while Rebirth really took it home. I enjoyed Crisis Core Reunion as well.
I just finished this game very recently after waiting months to play it, and I thought this game was amazing, greater than the sum of its parts for sure but once the dust settled I couldn't stop thinking about the game. I really enjoyed Remake and while I was a little worried about how bloated the game could be I actually thought it was super easy to get into and before I knew it I wanted to just enjoy the world with the party. I just found everything to be so much fun. And I loved the story and new expanded concepts, it's a bit much to wrap your head around but it really isn't as confusing as it seems. Considering how well this gane reviewed both by critics and user scores, I'm honestly kinda shocked seeing the pushback it gets whenever someone speaks highly of it but it could also just be a vocal subset. Also the complaints about the minigames I honestly think are way overblown, there are certainly gameplay detours, which I honestly welcome as it offers more than just doing combat 24/7, but if you actively engage with the game you're still doing combat the majority of the time. Only two instances I can think of where the detour was a hindrance: Cait Sith box throwing because it and that dungeon blows, and the mushroom side quest which again blows.
@@MarksWong don't blame you, I'd forget if I wasn't doing a hard mode playthrough. Hojo is 0-2 on dungeons for me, at least when he gets one in part 3 it won't feel like filler. lol
With you on the “Slice of Life” comparison. FF7 was always about Life & Death. Rebirth definitely feels like the “Life” part of that equation. I think we will explore “Death” more thoroughly in part 3.
I just got done replaying this game for the 3rd time last night! It’s incredible!! There is a couple of little quips I wasn’t a fan of, and I do wish they could fix the pop ins, but everything else is just too good for me to dislike the game. I do wish Square would take some advice and tutelage from a company like Guerrila games. About how to make the world and level design a little more interactive, and to help with some animations like the jumping and dropping down from cliffs and stuff like that.
The only minigame I loathe is doing Abs against Jules. Also, performance mode could be better. Other than that, this game is close to perfection - and most of hate it gets is from being a Sony Playstation exclusive (apparently a problem nowadays, even tho most of Final Fantasy games were exclusive across it's history).
Incredible game. One of my top 5 for sure. Consider that I spent 40ish hours on my first playthrough of OG FF7, but I’ve spent 40 hours on Remake and 110 on Rebirth - 150 hrs total on a first playthrough, and we are waiting for part 3. I’m sorry, I get the criticisms of how much side content there is and how some of it is not fun to play. But… these games have already far surpassed the impact OG had on me. I really hope they stick the landing on this ending. With all the seeds they’ve planted, for those that have stayed on the ride, they have the opportunity to impact us with the ending in a way that will stick with us for life.
Agreed! The side content stuff will either click with ppl or make them bounce off... but if it clicks, it really enhances the overall experience of the game just purely with how you see the characters interact with the world.
I loved the remake, I did at least 4 playthroughs. Rebirth was great for the first 30 hours but then it got overwhelming and the combat dull. With that said, I recognize how good this game is. This game is got to be the biggest game ever made in terms of all the mechanics and size of its world.
I enjoyed it but when playing it I had A LOT of criticisms that I wanted to record and rant about, but went on vacation first and by the time I came back I lost interest. But the main ones would have to be. 1: The f-ing sidequests. 2: The soulless exploration 3: Stupid implementation of overworld quests. WHY do we fight the summons in a generic VR world and NOT somewhere in the world area? 4: Stupid implementation of Aerith, WHY is Chadley telling me crap about the summons and the world when they could have had Aerith pray at those locations, which would have prevented the next issue 5: The disconnect of acting as though Aerith matters in the final 2 chapters when she was barely present for the rest of the game. 6: The Re.....stupid nonsense of the alternate universes and poorly executed ending. 7: Disappointing Materia system, clearly only there because it was in the OG. Look at the "enemy skill" materia, rather than there being a bunch of fun enemy skills there are 4 generic ones. This could have been done so much better, but the active fighting system also makes it harder to combine materia. However, they had a system to combine items, WHY ON EARTH was that only used for boring item busy work and not to make cool new materia like "hell blizzard" or something like in crisis core? 8: The difficulty of traversing the map, good god gongaga.
We need the option to play as cute moogle forms likr moogle cloud and company and we need to play as cute cait sith cat forms for cloud and company and chocobo form for cloud needs to be playable along with the rest of the heroes as chocobos
I honestly don’t get the minigame criticism when most of the minigames are not required. For Platnium? Sure. Minigames weren’t the hardest part of Platinum anyway and Platinum trophy isn’t a freebie lol
I think it's a symptom of its own success - everyone loved FF7 REMAKE for everything and so they expect perfection for Rebirth. The expectations were just extremely high!
@MarksWong true, thats why i dont like the comparison between lets say metaphor en rebirth. Metaphor came out on everything. But on the other hand they made that choice.
Tbh, it’s kinda a mixed bag for me. The game feels very bloated with all the minigames and Chadley stuff. Although I’ve never known myself to be fond of open world games because I get overwhelmed easily. Kinda a personal preference I guess 🤷♀️ what’s been bringing me back are the characters, I’m genuinely very invested and love the characters in this version of ffvii. There are little naunces to them that really add to what was presented of them in the OG, and I really love that. I just wish all the extra content wasn’t shoved in your face, so I could enjoy the story a little bit more.
It really is one of those things that if you don't like the characters, then there's no excuses for anything else in this game. They're the best parts of this new era of FF7 imo!
Same here, still loyal fan of FF series. But in this era, players easily get pissed off by company's WO ke and DE I intentions. Once the game's smeared enough, the potential PS 5 players forfeited the game. Some hate being tricked to buy 3 games instead of 1 whole big game although personally I think each part so far is well legit game of its own w/ plenty of content without much reliance of knowing much of whole game,.
I can see how some people might like this new interpretation of ff7 but i felt everything was overacted... especially tifa... and mostly insufferable. Cloud is the worst. He's essentially a male version of lightning when he was more a sleek cool badsss in the og. In the remake universe, he looks like he can barely hold his sword up. I think they should've went for a more masculine interpretation... almost more like clive
I thought remake combat was way too shallow compared to og ff7 strategically but it was also mechanically shallow compared to a real action game like elden ring or ninja gaiden. It kind of was bleh...looked ok but there are games that look at better now. Ff7 rebirth doesnt look like it improves on it
It’s not a perfect game but it’s my favorite that I’ve played in years and I did NOT expect it to be

No game is perfect.

can't wait for them to release the soundtrack - saw the orchestral tour live, and I'm itching for getting those songs again
@MarksWong wish I could have gone to the orchestra tour! Seemed awesome 😍

It’s not only game of the year, it’s one of my favorite games of all time.
My game of the year. Can’t wait for part 3
Love this video and could not agree more. I really do hope it wins game of the year it deserves it.

Amazing thoughts and video overall. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
I ADORED Rebirth! What a great game ❤❤

I forgot about the Cait Sith box throwing 🥲 that could've used a bit more work

I really hope they do pull in the silliness though when they start going through a lot more of those motifs!

Yeah the graphical problems are pretty distracting. Just waiting for the PC version so all that will be fixed 😊
for me it was the best of 2024. With Wukong and Stellar blade behind. Im considering buy it again, the PC version, as long as they make a decent port.
The only minigame I loathe is doing Abs against Jules. Also, performance mode could be better.

Shadow of the Erdtree's my GOTY but if DLCs not included then its FF7 Rebirth or Black Myth Wukong. Is part 3 FF7 Reunion?
Its likely going to be Reunion - but I think it'll be a number of years before we get any news sadly
I enjoyed it but when playing it I had A LOT of criticisms that I wanted to record and rant about, but went on vacation first and by the time I came back I lost interest. But the main ones would have to be.

i hate that pc gets shafted for so long ">.>
tbh this is the only reason i can think of which explains why FF7 Rebirth didn't meet Square Enix's sales expectations
