CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray (Tom Cruise) searches for Rachel (Dakota Fanning) on a farm, and when she gets abducted by a tripod, he has no choice but to follow her.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. Also starring Tim Robbins, War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg, who had been planning the project for years, but set it aside until a wave of "alien invasion" films (led by Independence Day) had run its course.

I could FEEL Rachel's fear, panic and shock throughout watching this film. That's how good Dakota Fanning did her part, and she was just eleven years old here.

i may be overanalyzing this but Racel was a genius in this scene, she's not frozen in fear, yes you can see fear on her face (reasonable reaction to the titan before her) but she did NOT move or make any attempts to run... she was standing her ground maintaining eye contact with this mechanical monster 100x her size. this is the bravest she has ever been in the film and she did this deliberately to save her father. to give the tripod something else to focus on to allow ray to either think of a plan or to get to safety. she screamed here on purpose to draw the tripod's attention. and by god it worked
@@faceripper77 I'm really curious to know what you would have done if you had to face a 40 meter extraterrestrial mechanic device slaughtering people around you by pumping their blood when you're a 10 kid, especially when I see how most people react when they're seeing a 2cm spider in their shower. Also, it's heavily implied that Rachel was probably already suffering from anxiety since we can saw Robbie knows how to calm down his baby sister during her panick attack in the car at the beginning of the movie, implying it's not unsual for her to have panick attacks like this. But, yeah, shut up kiddo, we're in the middle an apocalypse right now, the adults are talking...

As I stated on a different comment, the Tripod isn't moving when he comes outside. I would even hazard to say that Ray was standing right under it. It was outside looking for Rachel, and then it heard Ray yelling and turned around. It was very dark outside and the near black metal would hide it as long as it didn't move. Also, I think Ray ran out in desperation, I'm pretty sure he expected to the see the Tripod making off with his daughter when he got outside.

That shot of the tripod bearing down on Rachel is terrifying. It really shows how massive this thing is from a child's perspective.

she was scared, she ran out to escape, she saw the thing and screamed, then fight-flight-freeze kicked in and paralyzed her, so she couldnt move. not that running would make a difference anyway.

I get why people would dislike Rachel in the movie, she screams and some people find that annoying and bratty. But in a situation like this, Rachel was screaming out of fear.

One thing I always found unnerving is how low to the ground it descends to capture them, it doesn't need to, we've seen previously they don't need to get so up close. Really sends the message on how little they regard us.

It was probably terraforming and didn't realize he was there. Remember that tripod that stabbed that dude? You couldn't even hear it other than the needle.
In the new upcoming game its a "stealth/stalker" mode that the tripods can enter where they cut out the sound of their engines and they toggle off their spot lights and the only thing giving their presence away is footsteps. At night you probably wouldn't tell where one is as it's color scheme is black, maybe a silhouette is all you get.

ok, just - i need to just rave about the tripod's design because it is so freaking good! it's so needlessly flexible, like those legs allow it to bend down all the way to the ground. it doesn't need to when grabbing Rachel and Ray, its tentacles reach down to the ground, so all they need to do is maneuver the longest ones. but it's intentionally designed to be intimidating and the way the head gets ridiculously close as the legs trap you from going anywhere. the horn that blares as they start hunting people and the march-like noise that comes from the machine, it's unforgettable. they're doing this not just because they want to terraform the planet but also because they enjoy tormenting humans. equal parts terrifying and amazing.

They don't enjoy tormenting humans, they see it the same way we see an ants nest in the way of a highway; a small obstacle to be completely erased. And their legs aren't unnecessarily flexible, they're designed for everything. Judging by their lack of awareness when it comes to bacteria, it's safe to say that they're used to invading more advanced species than humans. Imagine a huge megacity being scaled by that thing. Humans were simply just the last ones in line.
Whatever You think of Tom Cruise... He has never made a bad movie... Except far and away ... But he has been top of his game for decades .. great actor
Well I can tell you Tom Cruise was great in this film, he did great as a father trying to protect his kids. I also liked Cruise in Jack Reacher!

Plus the tripods foot placement is off, it lands right behind Rachel in the close shot but when it shows the wide shot not only is the tripod further away, but the left foot of the tripod is way off to the side
Animation errors are to blame.
It probably got really close to make sure she was worth taking, and then readjusted once it determined she was human. These aliens aren't here to exterminate humans, they're here to feed off their blood, meaning that they're probably prioritizing humans who are healthier than others. This could explain why they seemingly shoot at random targets with no discernable reason.

Suspension of Disbelief would be that the Tripod was turned off when it was probing the basement.
The tripod was simply standing there. They can be extremely quiet when not moving, and it was probably very dark and hard to see it due to its paint job.

I know this movie's a decade old now, but I really hate that cliche of when someone sees something scary and deadly, they just stand there instead of run!
She was eleven. Kids of all ages get scared by lesser things. You know how people always say that the playstation 2 memory disc message, or the Wii error sound, or the x box red ring of death? Now imagine a kid who gets scared by those, put in front of a giant killing machine that they have seen kill people, and is now staring right at them. Most kids would just sit there frozen since one of our responses to danger is to freeze up.

@@Scifogon Well from what I heard it's somewhere between 33 to 100 meters considering the inconsistent reports from people on the size of the tripod those are the numbers. In USA terms it would be between 100 to 300 feet tall. Approximately the height of a 5 to 10 story building at minimum.
