If Joker were made in the 90s it would have just been a good movie trying to be Taxi Driver. It goes to show how much the art of film making has declined in 30 years because Joker was a great film in 2019. This movie did not need sequel and making the sequel a musical automatically makes it a turd.

I dunno, sounds kind of cool. Better than some bland rehash of the first. I like they are trying something different.
Musicals are usually godawful. The worst of cinema conbined with songs few would want to listen to if it was released just as an album. Hardly a dude interested in those.
You don't know what you're talking about. Some of the greatest films ever made are musicals.
Let's be real here. The first film was a total departure of the original concept. It did not really respect the lore and was a total departure of what people were used to see about this character. There was a sense of novelty about it and that is probably why it worked, the problem is that you can only get so much mileage out of this before the novelty wears off. I think that 1 film was enough, a second film and a musical if it is the case is asking too much from people and too much suspension of belief will not work. The character is now basically a clown with the name attached to it.
Nah they just messed up with the plot this time
Man shut up lol
The phrase is "suspension of disbelief", just fyi
@@TheSergio1021I was wondering that, is it? Does it not work as suspension of belief as well? For example, how some people say ‘I could care less’ versus ‘I couldn’t care less’? I prefer couldn’t care less because if you could care less then it implies a modicum of caring…. Would suspension of belief not mean you just could not in anyway believe it, it exceeds and ends any belief at all?
@@Gigipretty64 good question but no, it is suspension of disbelief. The phrase is used when you're trying to enjoy a fictitious work, so by suspending your disbelief in it, it becomes "like real" to you. Suspension of belief on the otherhand is the opposite. You are avoiding your belief in the subject. You're not enjoying immersion with a fictional work, but instead refusing to believe it, not exactly the same thing.
Couldn't care less is also the correct more commonly used phrase because it means you're at the lowest end of the spectrum of "caring". Could care less carries the same connotation but it leaves the possibility that you *could* care less.

My sequel would have been: Young criminal psychopath idolises 'The Joker'. Breaks Arthur out of the mad house to serve him as a faithful acolyte. Discovers Arthur is not a charismatic genius, but just a sad, lonely maniac. Appropriates The Joker identity and becomes the criminal mastermind he thinks The Joker is destined to be. Arthur tries to prevent some calamity but is killed.
Sounds like a cool idea to close the trilogy. Also that could make the Joker younger so he is closer to Bruce's age.
That's 10x better than the actual sequel, that sounds like an actual continuation of the characters and themes
Just.... no.
this. sounds. EPIC
I actually love this idea. Especially if the acolyte is weird and mysterious and is an unreliable narrator
Instead of going deeper into madness and psychological aspects of Arthur, making Harley slowly turn into a similar type of a psycho, we got this weird musical thing...
For me the best things they could've done are either show that Arthur can't handle this much attention, the attention he always craved and so this Joker persona makes him even more paranoid, violent, apathetic etc. Or, make it so that he really does become a leader of these "riots" because for the first time in his live people are noticing and supporting him leading to some big changes in the city.

The original Joker movie wasn’t great. You could never imagine that version of the Joker being a criminal mastermind. The movie also made him a somewhat sympathetic character, which is not what the joker should be at all. Ledger remains the best joker by far.
It was more like: You had to imagine quite a few major steps to see him becoming a criminal mastermind:
1st, loses his mind.
2nd, embraces the violence.
3rd, gets drunk with power.
4th, uses violence to grow his power.
5th, becomes experienced and skilled at masterminding crimes.
It's a bit of a stretch considering how old he was, as it doesn't leave a lot of time to do all that. So you're right.

Move along, champ. Its called an opinion, if you disagree that's fine I couldn't care less. Go watch your little musical.
The Penguin tv Show also got a 5 from IGN, their opinion means nothing. They have no credibility.
Jukebox musicals are the laziest form of entertainment. Even lazier than Blumhouse productions.
Adding Lady Gaga and musical numbers was a choice.
She is one of the musical artists turned actresses of all time up there with jenfer lopez and miley cyrus
It was indeed a choice. Pity it was a bad one.
She is such a talentless hack. Gag gag
Her performance was praised by critics and they complained she was not in the movie enough. She is not the issue here
Your post was a comment.
Nearly all.this movie is set in a courtroom , thats not a spoiler the trailer makes it clear on that point so for a lot of people this movie may be dull and there is no attempt to link this movie to anything in the DC universe . It's Iike tod Phillips was just teasing with us in the first movie
Don’t give two shyts about ANY of DC’s haphazard flicks. There’s no cohesion…no vision.
The DC universe is very discombobulated
@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 And that means there is a small chance they will be decent or at least fun. Marvel on the other hand has been copying and pasting the same awful script since 2008. I'll take my chance with a DC movie anyday but I'll also take a real movie over a superhero movie anyday.
its doesnt have to be the marvel universe, DC still have the best standalone movies. dark knight, joker and The Batman are better than anything marvel has done
I'm sorry Chris but American physco is in no way about an antihero lol.
yup only a psycho would think it was
People say Tony Soprano is also an anti-hero. I don't get that either.
is he mixing "antihero" up with "villain protagonist" or
Antihero just means "edgy, but likable" or what's the definition?
Another bad take by Chris. Add it to the pile.
The story looks boring set in prison and in court. How is that exciting!? It was good to see the Joker loose and chaotic at the end of the first film.
Making it a musical is obviously pandering to Last Gaga and her 'fanbase' but her over acting is hammy and hard faced. It's not enjoyable.
Joker didn’t need a sequel, but after all the critics claimed the original was supposed to be some alt-right incel flash-bang, I’m skeptical about their judgement.
So the original is alt right but the sequel has gaga in it, who is the epitome of far left?
@@AsdfGhjkl-bd5mh Ignore the dum dum tin foil hat talk. There's always at least one in Drinker's comment section.
The first one already was overrated, no doubt this follow-up will bomb.
there's a LOT of people that are completely out as soon as they hear "musical"
Two words killed it before a single frame was filmed: Lady Gaga
Why? I keep hearing this but didn’t Gaga get rave reviews for her acting skills? I remember hearing Meat Loaf was cast for Fight Club and people thought it was a terrible choice but he was great. I despise Gaga’s politics and very obvious occult symbolism but if her acting can convince us she’s the character and not the actor playing a role… I’m curious
I was dogpiled online for stating the same sentiment. Worst choice for a Harley Quinn.
You might be surprised. Have you seen her work in American Horror Story?
She's quite talented as an actor and has star quality.
Not a fan of her work ( basically I know poker face). But I can recognize talent.
She's mediocre actress, she has her moments for the most part it's bad acting.
@@tylerskiss
She's going to get rave reviews even if she's basically Acolyte-levels of acting. Why? She has sold her soul. Big pharma, the right parties, the right stances, the right politics... she's a puppet with mediocre ability at the end of the day.
Joker: The Musical+ Starring Lady Gaga = hard pass
Why?
@@anthonybeck21buddy just explained it Pass for me to.
@@anthonybeck21
Because !
Todd Phillips has said many times it has musical 'elements' that doesn't mean its a full on musical. Lady Gaga, while I'm not a fan of her, is a pretty good actress and is apparently not in the movie as much as you'd think anyway
She’s actually a pretty good actress. This being a musical is the issue. You really want to see Joaquin doing musical numbers as the Joker? Just a bad idea from the get go.
Every time Hollywood catches lightning in a bottle......they go and ruin it with sequels.
Joker should have just been a one off, stand alone film.
I agree with Badger why is this movie pulled into the Batman universe without having anything to do the Batman character. It feels false and I would be more apt to see the Joker film if it was not labeled "The Joker".
Thank you! I honestly fell asleep watching the first one. It had little or nothing to do with the Joker. Even less Batman, I’ll never understand the buzz it got…
Everything feels false, even the Joker itself. It's not inherently bad when inferior artists try to copy cult classics, presenting it for the masses. Most people nowadays never watched Taxi Driver or King of Comedy, no wonder Joker blew their minds (and unlike Last of Us, the new authors don't pretend they "invented" this kind of narrative, there's no delusional hubris, they acknowledge the source of their copy). But at the moment the original movie starts to include comic book references, Joker is supposed to be a charismatic "prince of crime", but the character was acting like a complete loser through the entire film (literally misery porn, can't be more Oscar bait than that), the third act ruined the whole thing imo, a "clown revolution" out of nowhere (with the Batman origin crammed in there, as the final insult). I've seen some people excusing the third act as if Joker was hallucinating all that stuff, including the TV show calling him, he kills the host, clown revolution, etc.. all that crap is nonsensical because he was hallucinating, but it's just too much coincidental stuff for being a hallucination, how the hell this complete loser was even invited to a TV show to begin with and, even worse, the security never found his gun, lol it's pure horseshit, suddenly the misery porn transformed into a over the top comic book
@@travisbarboza5803 Agreed. Stunned it made that $. One of the most overrated films of all time.
@@RRRRRRRRR33 Terrible movie with plot holes you could drive a truck through.... and Joaquin really stretching his range by playing a psychopathic kook. (Every role he's played for over a decade.)
@@greggibson33 He is naturally weird, so it's a good type casting. But the movie stretched the misery porn for too long, Joaquin became a caricature of suffering. That is not good acting, it's just melodramatic Oscar baiting... and again, another Last of Us 2 comparison, the game forced the misery porn as well. It's ridiculous how this stunt is still effective nowadays, the more "dramatic", sad and miserable, that increases the chance of winning "awards"
The Joker is far more interesting when he interacts with Batman.
They... complete each other.
@@DavidAnderson-m5ccouple goals
The reviews for the 1st film were bad. I'm looking forward to it. They're are too many amplified opinions these days
5:03 the critic announces "I don't trust critics. At all." 😆
Cuz the mainstream critics are bought and paid for
"Professional" critics are bought and sold.
I mean the first joker film wasn’t received so well by critics so I’m not surprised by the middling reviews for the sequel. If you start doing a live movie news /review show I’d tune in!
These reviews sounded like they praised the first one however
they hated the first one because it was "pro-incel" and "pro-right wing"
the first joker movie was shit. Arthur fleck has nothing in common with Jack Napier. Joker’s supposed to have genius level intellect but arthur is cringe lefty mental.
The first movie was ridiculous, started really good, then it devolved into a misery porn infested with overacting + one of the worst third acts I've ever seen, out of nowhere a "clown revolution" lol the movie was trying to be "realistic" until that point, but suddenly the director and writers remembered the Joker is supposed to be a comic book character, here it comes the sheer stupidity. If that movie was already over the top and arrogant, imagine a "musical"?
@@judyhopps9380 Nah, they hated it because it was a diaper fire.
Joker was pretty much a carbon copy of taxi driver, it had great music and cinematography and i really enjoyed the movie but it was clearly quite easy to make a good movie when the plot was the same as an earlier and better one, now that they dont have that template to work from im not suprised its not that great of a movie
Musicals make me irrationally angry, so I will not see it regardless of reviews.
Some are great, Blues Brothers, Team America, South Park the Movie
I am a musical theatre nerd, and do you know how many of my friends have sat down with me to watch a musical? 0. I've accepted YEARS ago that people hate musicals, and that's fine.
They're going to piss so many people off in the theatre when they first burst out into song.
The majority of the population do not like people bursting randomly into song ...heck, most people hate karaoke.
But hey, people will buy tickets and they'll say, "Joker 2 was the biggest hit of the year" and not take into account how pissed off the audience is ...
@@theauntofdragons People randomly bursting into song and/or dance taps into the caveman part of my brain instructing me to go with the "blunt object to skull" approach. It's completely fine for people to like the movie, but I don't want to appear on the evening news.

We didn’t need a sequel
First one was highly overrated. No surprise I have no desire to see this one.
The announce of it being a "musical" was a disappointment on in itself
Knew this film was some bullshit when they decided it was going to be a musical. No thanks.
GaGa copying Joaquin’s best bits badly from the first movie was the first red flag.
Joker was a movie that hijacked DC characters so that a director could make a movie about mental illness that doesn't correlate with the Joker's character. Now we're getting a movie hijacked by a narcissistic singer who will turn this movie into a a giant dream sequence TV episode so she can get an Oscar. Everyone sees it coming!
The accuracy in this comment hurts... lol
Thank you! Finally someone that actually understands reality 🙏
Spot on. I was never a fan of the first Joker film at all...over hyped and completley forgettable. This sequel is exactly as you called it...a weak vehicle wrapped in a Joker package simply to position Lady GaGa for an Oscar nod.
It was just taxi driver & king of comedy smooshed together, it was great for that reason. It was just an excuse to make a movie that was like a 1970’s movie with a super hero paint of coat over it, the second one idk just doesn’t seem like it’s gonna work
100% she's going to win that oscar..... that shit is rigged years in advance.....
Joker ripped off king of comedy way more than taxi driver. It's basically the same ending (except this time de niro sits on the other side of the table)
its the same fkng film
Exactly! At the end I was wondering if Philips was going to get sued for plagiarism. Joker has literaly ZERO originality.
It may just be me but Joker films look really unappealing and turn me off. Where is Batman?
So Todd Phillips took a risk to make Joker 1 and it was a huge success. But he never learned WHY it succeeded. So he took another risk but in a completely different direction, and its setting up Joker 2 for failure. Just shows that risk-taking alone isnt enough, you HAVE to know what you're doing.
What risk? A character study of a mentally ill loner/loser? Yeah, a real risk. No built in audience for that.
@@richardm8807making a "comic book movie" about that is a bit of a risk.
@@Pelicanzzz
Not when the character is the most popular and iconic villain in comic book history. That was the driving force behind it. And people are so attached to the character that they thought the film was better than it was.
This won't work. I love musicals when they're done right, but seriously, Joker? Can you imagine Batman the musical? I can't take this shit. It's such a lame idea.
I'd watch a Gotham musical. 😂
I'm Baaaaaaaaatmaaaaaan.
Na na na na
Joker 2... A musical you say? Well, 2 things, being a die hard Batfan, I am NOT 'Amuse-ical'... And, with Lada Gaga/G'ga(?), I WONDER where/who/how THAT element was devised for a film that SHOULD be full of drama/action/violence (normally associated with the character 'Joker')... Did the 'Lady' push for her character to sing as that is what she is best known for? 🤔 🦇😎🦇 🇬🇧
Francis Conroy outshines lady gaga. The people wanted the dramatic depth of the first one to continue. Not a musical 😴
Joker 2 looks like the worst thing ever conceived by man

Even worse than the first??
Pretty much every time a movie has a bad critic score on rotten tomatoes. It ends up being Good. I wasn't really looking forward to this movie but now I'm intrigued
It will bomb in the theaters. All those fans who watched it the first time won't the second time. Then they'll blame racism, sexism, homophobia, etc as why noone watched it
I blame the musical.
