Stoked to see you fell in love with the 20d! It's a great old gal. I guess at the end of the day, when you do enough processing in Lightroom to an image and you're posting it to social media it doesn't matter which camera you use. I think it's more about what camera feels good in your hand, the menus, and the overall experience which determines which one you grab off the shelf - unless you're a professional who needs say a larger sensor, and more bells and whistles.

I shot a hole year only black and white in 2023...true about the colors not interfering the scene anymore. Lights, shadows, shapes and much more focus on the subject as well. My color photography is today way more simplified, minimalistic. Very interesting learning curve that makes me think today before shooting...are the colors adding anything to the picture ? If not...black and white it will be (mostly direct in camera).
Great pictures with a great camera. Started myself with a 30D back in 2007. I'm in the Fuji system now and love it. Got myself a Nikon D2X though two years ago...might get my hands on a Canon from the good old days again soon :O)

Nice!! Loved the way your 20D picked up the neon light signs 👏

Great video ! Made me want to shoot exclusively in BW for sure. I watched the new Civil War movie and loved the use of BW with the film camera. Super impactful

That filmic quality and the back-to-basics approach. Exactly why I ordered another 20D to replace the one I gave my son. It would be a bit crass to ask for it back. LOL You make good points. Not having the big screen on the back so you can check the detail of every shot take that as a suggestion to shoot it like a film camera. Think about your shot before you take it. How you want it to look. What aperture and shutter speed within the limitations of available ISO will give you that. Frame in the viewfinder, shoot, and like a film camera, wait until you get home to really see how those shots came out. Analyze why the great ones grab you and, why the not-so-good ones fail. How can you do it better the next time? The beauty of those old digital cameras is that you still have to be a thinking photographer to get the best images. As you said, that translates to being better when you are using the higher-end gear. And, it's cheaper than running a lot of film these days.

I recently picked up a 30D at a flea market with a 28-80MM lens. I charged it up and it worked great. A friend bought it from me and he loves it. People get so wrapped up the mega-pixel hype. I'm really a Nikon guy and my favorite camera is the D700. Love the picts that come out of it. I agree that simplification is better and I love black and white. I also don't want a computer with a lens that does all of the work for me. Great video.

I haven't watched the entire video yet, but I just wanted to say that the image at 1:47 made you an immediate subscribe. No one takes that picture. I have spent a lot of time in Seattle in the past and almost all of the pictures of the public market are from the bottom of the hill showing the street, the market and the full "tourist shot" of that area. You seem to see things a little different and that is usually the thing that I look for in my own stuff. I am interested. ... ok back to the video.

Sold all my Sony gear and gone back to Canon, so I brought a Canon 20D/30D and a 50D and enjoying all of the images they produce. 🙂

From what I heard ... may be off... I heard that a 20D user can take B&W jpeg photos, and at the same time the RAW files can be color. I'll find out soon myself- on order.

This is true! I have my 20D set to shoot both RAW and jpeg... and the jpegs are B&W, while the RAW files are full colour.

I found you through your video on the 20D. I really enjoy your style. Good stuff! I agree that the vibe being similar between the cameras, but the 20D does better at black and white. I recently got a 30D and it's really impressive how the images come out of camera. They all have a feel to them and aren't sterile, which definitely draws me in more. By the way, the Sigma Art 30mm f/1.4 packs a lot in a small package for travel... and works on full frame! I'm subscribed. Cheers!

      Thanks!
I agree, the 20D is definitely more suited to black and white for sure!
I've heard good stuff about the Sigma Art primes. I'll have to check them out at some point! (Currently waiting on the delivery of a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L II haha.)

I have always been drawn to black and white images. I am new to photography, so this may be a silly question, but do you shoot in normal (color) mode and just make the image black and white after, or do you set the camera to black and white. I have a 20D that was gifted to me and I see that there is a black and white setting. Just curious

I set the camera itself to black and white. 🙂

This is what i did with my newly bought 40D last December. It became my B&W camera only because it was so good at it.
