  • Knee arthroscopy recovery can be optimized if you follow a few basic rules. Orthopaedic surgeon, sports medicine specialist Dr. Chris Raynor demonstrates a few mobility exercises that he is using to expedite his own post-operative recovery after having arthroscopic knee surgery.
In this video, he talks about the importance of achieving full extension, full flexion, and normal quadricep activation of the operative knee as soon as possible following surgery, and he demonstrates a few exercises for each that he is using in his own rehab, ones that he would typically prescribe to his own patients (when applicable) for the first few days and weeks post surgery.

Boost of confidence when you see an actual physiotherapist having arthroscopic meniscectomy. Proof that having this surgery can be very beneficial.

I watched so many videos and read so many rehabilitation protocols - this video here, together with the other videos of this series, are without a doubt the best material on the internet: priorities, explanations, causes behind swelling and their varieties, how to prevent swelling, how to test your own progress, how to properly preform the exercises..
And no PT practitioner can go through all of this information (at least not mine).
Additionlly, the surgeon himself had a knee operation here. This can't get any better.
I am grateful to you, this helps my rehab incredibly!

Glad to hear it. I am working on a course to teach PTs right now. Hopefully, I will have it done soon so that me people can learn about these techniques.

This is the best video by far. I'm 2 weeks post surgery and having severe trouble with flexion of my knee. Can't even get to 90° yet. It's amazing how much flexion you have after one day of surgery. I couldn't walk for 2 months before my surgery, and not using my leg atrophied my leg muscles and knee joint. I'm sure this has contributed to the slow progress of my rehab. I can straighten my leg good though. Thanks for awesome video and instruction!

Good instructions!. I'm going through arthroscopy recovery myself and indeed quad activation is the hardest I could only start engaging the quad fully on day 5 after the operation it started with a sort of stab feel but it eased up on the same day I started making that tension for a few seconds as Dr Chris mentioned... it takes a few tries to get it going.
I'm doing some reps with a thick rolled up towel under my knee and raising the foot and other reps with the same towel below my ankle and bringing the knee down.
Good luck to all of you going through this! it's been a tough first week but I'm seeing progress daily that keeps me going.

Thank so very much for information on TKE post surgery. This is most insightful for me as I have been struggle to regain leg extension after 6 surgeries and year later. Some of your suggested exercises are do able for me and are very helpful! Thank you again !

Thanks for the video. I thought it was very well done. I am 9 weeks out of full knee surgery and still have not gained full extension my doctor said that I am 3 percent from being straight but I am still walking with a limp which is also causing me back pain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Gosh I wish I had this info after both my knee surgeries. I received no guidance for PT. It’s been 4 years and I was able to get back to squats / lunges , running and spin classes. Am looking for knee exercises to strengthen. I feel sometimes knee pain in my knees (not both at the same time) during sprints or if I go too heavy on spin cycling tension

What exercise do I do to relieve the pain in the back of my knee. And also my surgery was on July 1, 2022 and I never saw that the exercises that you are showing to be done for me as I did not start physical therapy until a week after surgery. My continual pain that I had in my knee went away immediately after surgery that I thought everything was doing really well and so I believed I could start walkingWhich was a bad idea

Giles, these exercises are appropriate for any knee surgery, including TKA. They only addition that I would add is for weighted leg extensions: www.tiktok.com/@dr.chrisraynor/video/7055739439036779782
