Use Google Chrome because it supports web-midi, and you need that for this to work.
You can order the rk-002 here (select the Modifier firmware):

Thanks for making this video! Despite the clear instructions, I had a lot of trouble getting the settings to write to the RK-002, even using the same configuration of cables (and a similar Focusrite interface, the 18i8). The thing that finally got it to work was running the settings page for the RK-002 in an incognito Chrome window, for some reason. If anyone else is having trouble with this, give that a try, and justify the headache I endured to find that solution. :D
Thanks for the heads up, that's certainly weird :)
Awesome info. This, along with your other video demonstrating the polyphony with the RK-002 is great news. I can’t wait. My only problem might be that I don’t have an audio interface.
thanks for the tips. The rk002 works great with DT. I use it with beatstep which makes it easy to jump between polymux, arp, and euclidean sequencer. Another trick is to route the arp channel internally on the DT to change which channel/synth gets the arp notes on the fly.
Discovered your youtube channel this evening thru elektronauts. Man, you just sold me a cable! :D And maybe a second Digitakt which I was already considering.
Sorry bout that 😄
Hi and thanks for the video ! I was able to make it work with an Arturia Keystep but only for few minutes. It work on and off since then but mostly NOT working :P It is said on Retrokits website to "set loopback parameter to 0 if you want to use external play". Not sure what it means but I guess the setup described in this video do that. Am I right ??
Hey Dave, good news from retrokits today: "I updated the DUY to 1.4 where the CC 120 will be blocked on polymux output, if that is the reason for the crash it should now not do that anymore."
Thanks for making this! Can't wait for my RK-002 to arrive :)
Could you please do an update video? In your other previous video that you show about the poly synth you have the midi in cable which is the orange part inside of your midi in versus how you have it now
Yeah this is to change settings on it. Not sure if there'll be a new video but I'll keep it in mind :)
Hi Dave, I have a digitakt, what cables to use on the digitakt outputs to the ts to ts interface lef and right or are they both TRS?
Ello, both are okay. With trs cables you will get a balanced connection and with TS unbalanced. Balanced is prefered in general as the noise floor will be a bit lower. However with short distances and recording at 24 bit it’s not a problem at all to use TS. So in short: it doesn’t matter much ;). If you can choose go with a balanced connection (TRS)
Maybe the older versions of the DT firmware didn't allow this, but I just confirmed on my DT that you can indeed set all eight of the DT's audio (sample-based) tracks to the same MIDI channel (I tested Ch 10, but I don't see why you couldn't use any channel). This means you can achieve eight-voice polyphony as demo'ed in this video WITHOUT any special MIDI cable. Have I missed anything?
Always has been the case but that is not polyphony. You are then simply playing all 8 tracks at the same time. This cable allows 1 midi channel to round robin through the audio tracks because it will split each consecutive note to a different midi channel. That’s why you can play a chord on a keyboard and hear the different notes. Just setting all audio tracks to the same midi channel does not allow this.
Cheers
@@Davemech oh, I see, thanks for the explanation! I guess you could get a chord by setting the tracks to different notes, but it would always be the same chord.
Hi. Nice Video. Is it possible to update the firmware only with the Digitakt, without an MIDI-Inferface?
Hey, nice video! Is it possible to use this cable to only trigger 7 pads and use your final pad for drums or other sounds? Also, have you tried to use this for the Octatrack?
Thanks! Yes you can set it up so it uses less than 8 tracks. I don't own an octatrack, but that should work as well yea. The only downside being that octatrack doesn't have a control-all function to set parameters across tracks at once.
Hey Dave, did it happen to you that the set up for polyphony as you explained it worked and the suddenly stopped working? That's what happened to me and I can't figure out why that is. I am using a Motu Ultralite Interface to set up the RK002 and it worked until I used my set-up in a different city. So I wondered if it could have to do with the electricity circuit? Back home in Cologne it doesn't work either though...I didn't change any settings. On the RK002 DUY Exchange platform my cable is being recognized and seems to be working. Do you have an idea what it could be? Thank you in advance! Jenny
That's odd. If it is recognized by the rk-002 settings page on their site I think it must be your midi settings in the digitakt. Make sure midi ports are set to midi and correct channels and receive notes is on etc.
@@Davemech Dave, thanks for your response! It was the Midi configuration indeed, but not inside the DT but in the firmware. I have the Digitakt Euclid/PolyMUX/ARP firmware installed and my PMUXPOLY Channel was set to 1. Therefore there couldn't be polyphony. Thanks to the Retrokits support I found out about it. :-) Thanks to you, too! Greotjes, Jenny
Hey Dave, Bought the RK-002 and i'm wanting to use a 'Le Strum' midi instrument to trigger the chords to trigger the Digitakt.
i'm not getting power to the RK-002 is there a way to power the cable between my 9V midi instrument, the cable and the Digitakt?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
i've always thought double Digitakts would be amazing for techno sets ;)
Hi Steafah, thanks for watching. Double digitakts is really nice yeah :).
Retrokits might know the best solution for you. They are really responsive and helpful. I think you'd need a midi thru box which has powered midi. You could then use the same routing as I use in the video. Regular midi cable to midi thru box, rk-002 from midi thru box to digitakt. Retrokits might have some suggestions!
Dave mech Cheers Dave, I'll give retrokits a shout!
Keep on technoing
Will be a video update for digitakt 2? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Possibly 😊👍
Could I set it up so that I can still use the MIDI OUT on the Digitakt to control another synthesizer (like a monologue or a moog) while it's sequencing 4 notes of polyphony (instead of 8) like you did in this video?
Hey dave or any other of you knowledgeable people. I have the rk002 and it works brilliantly creating euclidean rhythms. But i want to be able to control the notes of the tracks with my Keystep? Would i have to do this via my laptop and audio interface or is there a way i could still do this DAWless? Thanks for any help
Hi Tim, I believe the keystep doesn't support midi-power unfortunately. You could use something like the RK-005 to do this. Keystep into rk-005 into rk-002. You can always mail the good people at Retrokits to see if there's another solution besides an rk-005. Their support is great.
@@Davemech cheers man, great vids btw:)
Nice, thank you!
Does it work with loopback without an interface? Assuming we ordered the cabe with digitakt firmware
That should probably work yes :) just have to make sure you set up the midi config right
Hi, super thanks !
I am scared this will affect my setup : If the chords uses 8 midi channels, I cannot use any other midi channel left in the dgtkt to seqequence an external gear ?
You csn still use midi channels 9 - 16 ;) 7 midi tracks left on DT to sequence external gear. You'd need a midi splitter though if you do this with the midi loop back trick. If you use An external midi keyboard you still have the midi out left on the DT :)
Hi Dave, will the firmware update also works if i use a Digitone? So a regular midicable from DN-midi-out to DT midi-in, and the Retrokits midicable from DT-midi-Thru to DN-midi-in. Just wondering.....
Hi Peter, I doubt it. I don't think the DN acts as a midi interface either. Not entirely sure. Best to ask elektron support to verify :)
Thanks, Dave. I own both so I can try it out myself, i was just wondering. I will let you know.
Thanks for the video, I have tried it... I've managed to get it partly working. I have added 7 midi channels in the settings/mod screen, but the maximum of polyphony I got is 3 (the first 3 samples). Then I tried to add 5 midichannels, but still the polyphony is 3. Any idea what i am doing wrong?
Wouter van Ophuizen have you checked if midi channels of the audio tracks on the digitakt are set from 1 to 8, and the base channel on the rk-002 is set to channel 1?
Hi Dave, yes, I have checked that.. I exactly followed all your steps.
Wouter van Ophuizen hmm, not sure then. Are you sure the settings on the rk-002 are changed? The mod page won't give you any indication if it hasn't. Try setting the Midi response channel to channel 2, and see if it starts playing from digitakt audio track 2 in stead of 1. If not, then the rk-002 possibly doesn't get powered right when you try to change its settings. You use the audio interface thru digitakt connection?
Thanks for you repy!! Well, probably it doesn't get powered right then, cause I also have tried the thing you suggested (setting the midi response channel to another channel). Have tried the updater via midi of several devices though, like the Novation Circuit, Sonic core scope and Roland UM-One. Shall try other devices as well then :)
Wouter van Ophuizen try to connect it like I do in the video. Digitakt does power the cable but doesn't act like a midi interface itself. Not every midi controller will pass on Sysex messages either. Using an audio interface with midi in combination with digitakt like in the video would be your best bet :) good luck dude
So u basically play samples with a midi keyboard... right ?
Yes. Those samples can be single cycle waveforms as well . So that way the DT is kind of turned into a wavetable synth.
Just got the cable but it doesn't seem to respond to anything..
using a keystep and also tried it with a korg SQ-1. with a different midi cable it works fine on both.
Maybe should have bought it with the volca fm setting instead of the digitakt settings..
You can change the firmware to the volcano FM if you want. I think the keystep is not suited to change the settings on the cable though. My advice is to contact retrokits directly. they have experience with loads of different setups.
you are the best
Very welcome!
Hi there! I have problems setting up the RK 002... Did everything as you describe it but it's not working... :/ Is it possible that with DT OS 1.10 there is a different way to setup? I've tried it with Midisport Interface + DT and also with DT only. the result: no signal at all thru the RK 002... Thanks for help! Cheers
Hi, the digitakt update isn't the problem. DT doesn't act as a midi interface but does provide midi power. So make sure you setup the cable with a unit that acts like a midi interface (like an audio interface), and if needed, use DT to power the cable as described in the video. If the cable doesn't work than the settings are probably not changed. If you can't get it to work this way, try contacting retrokits. Hope this helps. Cheers
Thanks - well, think I should contact retrokits, because I did it exactly the way you described... Thanks a lot anyway!
Hi Antonio, it seams that i have the same problem with my new rk002. i just cant get it to work. with other midi cables it works. i can control the audio tracks with the midi tracks of the digitakt. but with the rk002 - nothing. Have you found a solution?
Did you ever find a solution to this? I have exactly the same problem.
Amazing
I R M A o 4 this one is the demonstration :) ruclips.net/video/Sc2CfeCyfZ4/видео.html
what keyboard do you use?
thanks!
wouldn't it be possible to use digitakt as an audio interface and make the update just without a second interface?
Haven't checked that out yet. But now that overbridge beta is opening up the DT as audio interface and more importantly in this case a midi interface, it should be possible yes. Will have a look sometime.
when I ordered one, it had an option for the setup to be for the Digitakt, does that mean I can skip the update process?
Yeap. Although it has some additional settings that might be intrresting to check out.
this doesnt look easy
how dumb is that cable solution? its an 8 voice sampler, why doesnt elektron take care of a polyphonic setting?
LOL , damn right ... pretty cool video though.
