- Today EDTutorials by Exigeous exposes some new information that has been found within the Elite Dangerous Odyssey Alpha game files. These details were shared with me by an annonymous source and corroborated with another, as such I believe them to be legitimate. The leak includes details on new Thargoid on-foot troops, Thargoid Motherships (Seedships), new Thargoid and Guardian ground based POIs with scenarios, TWO new SRVs (the Rhino and Scorpion) along with two new ships, possibly the fabeled Panther Clipper and a new variant of the Mamba, possibly small class called the Mamba Light.

The lack of cross version play until console release tipped me over to refund, especially because it gives me more time away from that awful outfitting

I am looking forward to a number of options in the game coming in Odyssey. But I will not be jumping in straight away. I think the first few days will have its share of hiccups and I'd rather keep working on my objectives in game successfully while the hype relaxes. Certainly, lots of potential. I will say this. I think it would be interesting if they turned the Panther Clipper into a unique megaship instead of a player ship. My personal goal is to work on FA-off skills.
Ive heard panther clipper files go as far back as the release of elite so i wouldnt count on that one
One thing most game releases have tought me in the last 10 years, is not to get excited anymore and keep expectations low.

*siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh* You're right. It really killed the fun hyping up new games for me. The last game I actually got excited for was battlefield 3 and we all know how hard that launched bombed. That was over 15 years ago and like 80% of game launches since have been meh to wack. Hard to get excited about games when the majority of them launch with a "lets not finish it and fix it later" approach.

The Thargoid "seedship" is probably the Orthrus that was in Palin's base a while back. The concept art calls it a "seed interceptor" and it's what seeds a planet with barnacles

Based on the 2 year Beta Test that FDev called Horizons Release, I don't plan on getting Odyssey until they finish it some time in 2022 or 23. I predicted back when Odyssey's Release for 2021 was announced that it would be a Beta Release.
Oh boy, 9 new engineers! Because grinding engineers is the most fun and engaging content Elite has to offer!

I like engineering. While it has many flaws, there are a variety of interesting and tremendously fun ship builds. Theory crafting, gathering the materials by playing the game (not re-logging), building the design, testing it, making modifications and re-testing is one of my my favourite game loops.

Thx for sharing and your thoughts. To answer your question: since the original horizons release I have been underwhelmed and disappointed by every following ED release. Also I play ED exclusively in VR. My biggest fear are quality (lack of bugs) and engaging gameplay loops that are well integrated into the Core game. Both areas have been a massive weakness of ED releases. Therefore, I have not pre ordered and will not buy at launch. As you said, I wish Fdev all the best but will only spend money once they delivered.
Thargoid troops and motherships is something we all expect to come in Odyssey. Also would be nice to get the SRV, but I admit my preferred option here would be the Panther Clipper. :)

Excited tbh. But I don't really see what the fuss is about with regards to the Horizon's/Odyssey issue, I mean anyone who was paying attention to when they announced that Odyssey will be releasing later on Console than on PC release, we knew something like this was happening. They even mentioned this was going to happen a few weeks ago. I think FDev had every intention to go for a simultaneous release (and know they don't think it is ideal ... take that with what you will) but with COVID in the UK, that threw a spanner in development. This is the best case they could come up with without needing to delay Odyssey till the autumn, which the guys at FDev didn't want to do cause from my sources they are really proud of what they have created, and didn't like to delay it as the release build was pretty much feature complete and they didnt want it gathering dust for 6months while they wait for the console devs to catch up (as console dev is a different beast entirely). Expecially as there is way more content to come planned till Q4 2022 - Q1 2023.
However the amount of salt that has been created in the last 24hrs is enough to make a moon. So people need the chill the fuck out.
Given how epically lame the on-foot combat was in the Alpha, I’m not holding my breath of Thargoid on-foot combat blowing my socks off.
Everything else in Odyssey is great, but the shooty-shooty feels like something from a couple of decades ago.

In the alpha shipyard you can see the Krait Phantom has a "Krait Light" name plate on the side. I am guessing this is the internal naming convention? Maybe this suggests what type of ship the Mamba Light will also be. Same size class, similar looking, less hardpoints, greater speed and longer jump.
I hate to be skeptical, but I think we saw 100% of the content during the so called "Alpha". I agree that most of the content will be a staged launch or as the AAA companies refer to as "live service". Beta will = Launch and in the months/years ahead it will hopefully eventually reach a full release. That said, after thousands of hours in the game, I haven't pre-ordered and am waiting on launch reviews.
honestly the idea of a vehicle that acts like a tank and mobile base, but is made for commanders who don't want to own a ship or fly too often sounds cool, like instead of driving manually you could plot a course and the vehicle/mobile base takes you there or has a sort of cruise control. and you could use the taxi service to move around if you dont own a ship or one thats big enough to carry/store this medium sized srv.
If there is thargoid ground combat, when are we dropping into Klendathu?

I'm very excited to jump into Odyssey, although i might wait a few weeks to see the first bugs fixed, but i'm in love with Odyssey! :) so quite a few mixed feelings if i should jump right in or not!
With my subpar internet i'm probably going to have to wait for day one patched anyways xD
It'll probably be best to wait until at least the first patch so your first impressions don't get soured.
Excited but sceptical, I'll be there at launch and really hope that we only seen 10-20% of what we finally get, however I'm not happy thinking that it could months if not years before we see all that odyssey has to offer. This is not a season pass so most of it SHOULD be there at day of release. Still beggars can't be choosers and well just have to hope FDEV gives us all we deserve.
I would like to see a SRV that, maybe once you gain some Guardian tech and blueprints, would allow you to actually maneuver and hover like the guardian ships instead of driving over the surface.
Another variance for a SRV might be one that mimics an actual scorpion that would walk along the surface, maybe even being able to go upside down if need be. It would have six legs for mobility and the two front arm pincers for picking up and manipulating, including maybe housing defensive weaponry. Finally, the tail could house some type of optional gear.
I'll be jumping in from day one as I have the lifetime expansion pass but if I didn't, I would have probably held off for a while before purchasing. That being said, the possible new features you've mentioned in the video sound promising, lets just hope we get to see them on release 😊

Not gonna lie but I'm hoping for Thargoid motherships to show up instantly after launch and planet settlements being attacked by Thargoids.
And of course we will be not equipped for this and have to wait for Guardian unlock grind once again!
It was bad enough trying to do settlement raids in Open with other commanders causing chaos. Now imagine you're peacefully picking up some documents and a Thargoid Mothership appears above the settlement...
@@Sighman Sounds kind of cool to be honest, I always wanted something similar from No Man's Sky, but there's zero point to fleets and factions in that game since you can be best buddies with everyone and factions that hate you never hunt you down with capital ships.

Mamba Light and Panther were leaked a long time ago with description and specifications. Cool to see new SRVs though.

Frontier has been suspiciously quiet about what all is going into this, and I’m afraid the FPS mechanics and improved planet generator are the only two noteworthy features.

I wish I could trust them to deliver something worthwhile but I don’t think I can.
As it is, Elite is full of wasted potential. If they said they were implementing a proper in-game player faction system and adding player-driven industry and buildable stations, I would be enthusiastic about this since that would add loads of emergent gameplay.
But their track record shows us that this is THEIR game, not OUR game. So really, who knows. I can almost guarantee that they won’t expand on player agency since it seems to threaten them on a personal level.
Q:"will frontier deliver?"
A: no, probably not.
I not sure if it'll all work with the last gen consoles (considering the recommendations on PC).. I hope the performance and amount of content on next gen consoles isn't suffering from that. I see another Cyberpunk coming our way.
Probably worth noting that, from the code you showed on screen...
1. There are actually 4 SRVs there.
2. TESTBUGGY has at least 3 seats
3. SRV Mk II is either an upgraded version of the Horizons SRV, or the version in the Alpha with the different driving model.
When I played Alpha Phase 4, my ship name decals all changed to stock. My Krait Phantom had "Krait Light" written on it.

Get a PC and play there... my GTX 1650 Laptop can put out 100fps so no reason not to try
Great background music btw, tickles my inner funk. As to expectations, low at best based on previous releases. It will be riddled with bugs which will be sorted after months and months, and even then, some will be still there because they can't be bothered to fix them. Just look at the number of bugs in the current version of the game, which have been there since launch. I just hope it will be mildly playable but i expect a lot of grind, as FD don't know how to make a game without that 'feature'.
100% agree. On May 19 we will be playing a Beta until the release on consoles.
I was looking for 2 things. Either a dedicated, made for purpose, large explorer, with a 100 LY range, something that we don't have to strip down to a tin can like the anaconda, or a small class carrier that could carry 1 small or medium sized ship on board, that has fuel scooping capability. As this is looking less and less likely, I will be passing on this new Odyssey update.
6 months later…
I'm still about 150 jumps from the nearest inhabited star system. I wanted to visit the center of the galaxy and I didn't make it that far before turning around. I've been slowly working my way back. The boredom of just endless jumps has made this trip last me about 1 year and a half. Even if I did get odyssey it may be a long time before I actually even get to play it.
This is going to be a nightmare of a roll-out

Dang I haven’t played this in over a year, might come back. Last thing I was doing was trying to get the Guardian FSD drive😬
I think the ground combat needs some work - its playable but it is very bullet spongey, and as you saw in your clip at the start, you got rid of a units shields, spend time switching weapons and oh... the shields are back at 100% 10 seconds later. Personally I would change it so only strong or "elite" enemies can have a shield but have them recharge over time to 100% after a delay or make them permanently breakable.
Keep in mind you've only played with level 1/5 equipment without engineering.
Previously ED has had triumphs mixed with missed opportunities. I think Fdev. are capable of learning and improving.
So... i say Odyssey will be a part success on release and awesome eventually.

They obviously didn't learn anything about the engineering debacle because they just copy pasted it to Odyssey with even more painfull grind that no one likes.
@@ivocostacunha6795 i like engineering... my squadron likes engineering.... creators seem ok with it too.... you might be wrong there buddy. matts trading and recent QOL updates make it easy. The old grind is now a myth. Easy to unlock these days.
But you might be right about one thing. I heard the matts storage limit in Odyssey is global like it used to be in main game. That would be dumb...

@@TOONYBOY having matts traders helps these days. When I started it was a true nightmare... global storage of 300... no traders.... random negative effects when you 'roll' 😂🤮

Preordered Odyssey because I love the game and want to keep supporting FDev, and Elite's development cycle has just generally impressed me from start to finish - though the gameplay was a bit shallow in the beginning, and I think Odyssey will be the same.
I'm gonna wait until it's had a bit more post-release polish before I jump in with both feet (literally!); the comparatively lower quality of the character animations, AI behaviour and weapon models, and the bullet spongey combat look jarringly out of place compared to the elegance of the rest of the game, though that's to be expected for something this ambitious early on.
I'm cautiously optimistic it will get there and kick ass in the coming year o7
A new small ship? Yes please. I always thought the Mamba would have been better as a small ship anyway considering the racing angle (hopefully that'll mean enhanced thrusters) as well as the fact that the Mamba in the older games was a small ship.
Not so excited about our first new ship in a long time being... Not technically a new ship but yet another alternate take on another ship, assuming it comes before the Panther. But I guess that's to be expected with the focus on the ground game. And at least if it's small it'll be a lot more different than the Alliance line or the Kraits.

I'm really hoping that mamba lite is code for the hawk! To be honest I'm tired of re skinning the same old snake time and time again. Give the vulture a competitor and leave the fdl's to pleasure each other.
Does anyone get, or has it been mentioned before, that there is a 'Starship Troopers' vibe to Odyssey? - Especially with the information provided by this leak. The esthetic of the installations remind me of ST, and the Thargoid threats revealed here seem interestingly similar.
The image of the thargoid on the AX badges (ship outfitting) definitely has Starship Trooper vibes.

Such a polite way of putting it.... The previous excuse was "yeah but these are the free updates while they work on the REAL, paid expansion".
I will give them a slight tolarance if initial release is buggy and underwhelming...
But when the narritave undoubtly then becomes "This was just the foundation to allow for great new things", how many more updates will we wait?
My mind says "I'll give them 1" but unfortunately we know my heart (and wallet) will give them unlimited.....

I really hope that Frontier is indeed holding back a lot of the content for release. Frontier themselves stated that said Odyssey would be a fully fleshed out, content filled DLC and that it wouldn't be like Horizons all over again (bare minimum at launch but plenty of promises for more to come) I have barely played Elite since they announced late 2018 that we wouldn't be getting any proper updates for 2 years as they were hard at work on Odyssey. Well we are now well past 2 years and from what I've seen of Odyssey it hasn't been worth the wait. I really hope that the Alpha was just the tip of the content filled iceberg but, unfortunately, we all know Frontier.....
I expect about 20% more content. As a LEP-Owner i hope for more. I hope they will surprise us with something unexpected.
If there is nothing special, i just want a nearly bugfree and good optimized expansion at release.

I'm probably not even gonna check back in on ED before mid-fall this year. I'm not sold on Odyssey, and I'm certainly not paying for another half-baked partial release.

Excited but worried about my frames per second. Probably will have to have graphics set so low that it was better in horizons.
I won’t bother until the fall, when it’s released “for real”. I think the PC launch is a beta, and they won’t really have everything in until they release to console and upgrade horizons.
You'd think by now after all the past leaks Frontier would learn to manage their builds to exclude adding these references and assets into the release version of the game (assuming it's not done on purpose to drum up press). Cool stuff, lets hope ANY of it materializes

Glad I didn't preorder, as frankly everything I've seen is either not interesting to me (FPS combat), underwhelming (though about what I expected based on Frontier's history), or both. Seems ED will still be "a mile wide, but inch deep" game.

Great news, even if speculated. I have bought Odyssey and Im waiting for it to drop. Why I did? Well, space legs aspect is the thing that gets me the most fun. That is why I have played Star Citizen a lot, however at some point I could not stand the bugs and glitches. Even if Odyssey will be bugged I doubt it will be as severe as SC is. And second thing, FD will fix it much faster than CIG... so i think Odyssey will be worth the money spent in the long run. At least for me.
Also, Im a little bit tired of ship only stuff, no matter the game. A ship is more of a supplement for me doing the ground work. Heck I even don't have anything against being a space marine on a bigger ship doing boarding or delving into enemy installations, and the flying is done by someone else. If played solo, i prefer medium sized ships and doing Bounty Hunter/Merc work. Gotta get me them Thargoid skulls....

All we have to remember is the Horizon release where EVERY new mission type was bugged and impossible to complete as the game did not understand "mission specific cargo" marker and did not count them towards anything. A bug that was 100% visible in ANY testing and literally unmissable.
This expansion is many times more complex than horizons. Good luck, everyone, that will be a miracle if servers will even work for a first week.
I think Frontier is just trolling us with the Panther clipper. It was mentioned several times over the years but always failed to materialise. As you said, the game files for that didn't seem complete so I'm not holding my breath. Not fuzzed about the Mamba light. Goid FPS was inevitable imho though I'm surprised that development does already seem very far for it.
And here it is 6 months later, the Fdev have been repairing the damage the expansion caused with roll out releases with little things tacked on, like emotes.
Having said that, the new SRV shown here is confirmed to be multi crew and set to drop in the next couple of weeks. In game rumors of a new alien race are hitting the air waves by galnet. All of that meaning there is hope for the rest of the rumors.

FDev have made choices that have not made me happy, but not totally unhappy.
I've only recently started playing ED: Horizons and feel I've got plenty to keep me busy for awhile before I would even consider picking up Odyssey.
Goids in the flesh would be very interesting. Also I'd love to see the panther and rhino, SRVs in particular have been long overdue!
I'll have to wait until autumn though..
I'll be waiting, for now. Odyssey sounds great, but will it be a bugfest? How will it run on older hardware (I am running a 1070gtx, i52500k)? The Alpha was rough, very rough even in my opinion, and it has not been long enough to fix all of the issues. So I'll wait patiently for a polished, finished product and then decide if I am interested in what is offered for a full game price for only a DLC.
MEV = Mining and Exploration Vehicle? I also really want a combat SRV. If we're going full on land war with the Thargoids, then we'll need it.

Even with bugs its probably not too bad. Way I see it, on launch I will wait a few days then come in. Checking latest content before i do.
My time play is limited, so if others test, discover etc, it will save me time in the long run with less idle guess work.
This is a solid amount of content and I already love the game and have easily gotten my monies worth, new content will be enjoyed.
Panther Clipper, sounds great.
The bonus for Fdev with new ships ( even cosmetic skins same stats ) is easy secondary sales of ship kits, paint jobs etc etc.
I would be more inclined to release various ships of the same stats but cosmetically quite different.
Player choice is never a bad thing.
Well, truth is that I wont have high expectations until the full product gets released, but on the other hand, this dlc was very much needed a long time ago because for non vr players (myself included) gives you the sense of actual scale of the ships from the humble sidewinder to the imperial cutter and the other big 3.
Lets hope fdev was holding their best cards for the beta phase. Remember guys: expectations low so we can be pleasantly surprised.
I try to keep expectations low, but then I remember that very first station walkthrough (pre-Alpha video), and how I couldn't keep the silly grin off my face.

Like Exigeous said, I *really* hope Odyssey blows me away and it lives up to its potential. But.... Frontier have never given me reason to trust them with that. So... I'm waiting... and likely won't end up buying it, which seriously bums me out.

Well, at least it's 2 more ships. I guess that we will have to wait another 3 years for a type 7 Scout: just like the type 7, but with even less cargo and agility, but with a spoiler and a new grade 1 hard point.

While I'd love to have all Odyssey content at launch, I'd probably be happy with a staged rollout -- as long as they were transparent about it! But if they didn't communicate about upcoming features I would be bummed out.
If Odyssey does indeed contain Thargoid FPS combat, doubtful, then FDev are fucking idiots for not showing it. I'm going to pick up Odyssey on launch but early on I wasn't sure. If I had known FPS with filthy Xenos was possible I would have decided I was going to buy it much sooner.
Now, if FPS Thargoid combat IS possible and we DO get a new SRV, with a turret, then I'm going to go full on Halo-RP within Elite. Halo music included.
Maybe the reason for not adding the odyssey visuals to horizon until console launch is they’re adding crossplay? It’s a stretch… but it would be nice.
With Odyssey coming out really damn close to Below Zero (Subnautica) I'm not going to be on the ship at launch; but I'll be right behind ya.
Need space walking with the ability to manually repair ships (at a much slower rate than limpets) and explore/raid ships, stations, derelicts in zero G
I was pleased with the Alpha but this feeling was lost when FD announced that Odyssey and Horizons players can non co-exist until (at least) the console release. Th timescale of a couple of weeks from the Alpha finishing to supposedly full release was in my opinion too short. Also an Alpha is normally restricted to internal testing so pushing it out to the public on a sign-up basis was more of a pre-beta.
The fact that rollout on the 19th will not encompass the Horizons players as regards planetary tech as had been promised by the Community Managers and developers suggests to me that there are serious issues to be addressed, if they were simple a delay of a couple of weeks would have been an acceptable solution for most.
The split enforced will split playing groups into 'haves and have nots' which cannot be good for the game.

While 'space legs' is a nice addition, it is not that important to a non-first person shooter player. So it is with a mixed bag of stuff I see the release of Odyssey. I probably will not partake of the 1st person shooter aspect, however look forward to providing air support and 'tank' (srv) services on the ground. We shall see what they give us and how finished it is. (keeping fingers crossed)

I'm excited for Odyssey but more for the space legs than combat. Although coming up against Thargoid troops sounds both exciting and scary.
Watching this now.. I kinda got a Nostradamus moment here and there.. looks like there's lots more to look forward to - let's see what comes out Nov 2022
I’ll get odyssey as soon as I get a new graphics card (@ or below msrp). Which at this point is never.
That background music was FUNKY. Just being able to leave your ship and walk around is plenty for me, and as long as they come out with new stuff and don't get complacent with currently available content. I'm fine.
Already bought it two weeks ago, and planning on playing on day one. I bought it mainly to use the Gravity HCS Voicepack, and I like the new GUI improvements. Plus, I want to look at the stations from inside out rather than looking from the outside lol.
I think I'm gonna wait this one out and try not to even look for another year. There are too many things that are going to be clear deal-breakers for various parts of the community, and I'm just not interested in a FPS, especially not if players in Horizons can't see players in Odyssey. That's such a head-shaker of a decision. The content (most of it) sounds interesting, and sure, it would be cool to get out of the ship and interact with other players, but I can't see how the FPS even makes sense in context with the rest of Elite, and the lack of cross-play is, by definition, entirely immersion breaking. So, honestly, I'm happy to wait until it matures a bit. I'm here to fly.
