True story ... Back in 1976 when I was a young PFC in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, I went with friends to see Heart (with their white fuzz-covered amps and speaker cabinets), at the El Paso County Coliseum. In going through their set, when Anne Wilson announced that the next song was going to be "Magic Man", most of us in the crowd just groaned. This surprised Anne to no end. When done, the applause was minimal, at best. Then afterwards, Nancy only played the acoustic intro to "Crazy On You", and that was it, period, end of concert. At that point, many of us had figured out by then that Anne was not only surprised at the rejection at "Magic Man", but was probably mad about it as well. Ask anyone who was there.
Synthesizers have been around in rock, since the 60's. Experimental stuff goes back to even earlier. This sound is from the mini-Moog. Classic. Put to outstanding surprise effect, in this song.

"The Moog synthesizer is a synthesizer developed by the American engineer Robert Moog. Moog debuted it in 1964, and Moog's company R.A. Moog Co.
