I think people should temper their expectations on the graphics. Since RDR2 came out there has not been any open world games with better graphics, I think GTA6 graphics will be about the same as RDR2, which is already plenty beautiful. But there will be improved animations, bigger more dense environments, it will look fantastic. But I really don’t think it’s going to be a big graphical leap forward, and look completely photorealistic
Yeah most likely. People have way too high expectations. Definitely more detailed but I don’t think they’ll make it look better
There is absolutely no shot that it won't be a major improvement graphically. RDR2 still looks amazing today, yes, but it is five years old and designed to run on even older hardware. I don't think anybody is expecting "photo realism", and if they do they're delusional - the tech isn't there yet for any game; but the idea that GTA VI will look about the same as RDR2 is equally as silly. Graphics technology has advanced significantly since RDR2 was in development.

The thing that most people don't think about when talking about realistic graphics in video games is that there is a lot of back and forth between making realistic looking texture, shadows and lighting vs making them look dramatic. A lot of the times, it's not difficult to make things look as close to reality as possible but then it doesn't really look all that dramatic. Just walk out into your yard. Chances are it doesn't look amazing or unique or anything. So then we try to make it look more dramatic with saturation, depth of field, even completely fake and made up shadow positions and lighting because it provides the correct vibe for that specific game.

K... I also just love seeing the screen-space reflections when I walk outside. Those "photorealistic" graphics does it really well.
Yeah, as someone who is also a 3D artist and have discussed it with plenty, we all agree that realistic style from a modeling and texturing perspective is easier than stylized due to the challenge of consistency and no reference. What's challenging in realistic is lighting and colour, and pushing that enough to make things feel as you have explained dramatic. Many tones in real life are very monotone, or very low saturation, but saturation when used correctly (cold, blue and warm, orange for example) you can get beautiful images. The challenge then comes in, how do we use a super realistic lighting engine like Lumen and still get it to suit the hard fall off look we are going for, the high contrast, the high saturation, how do we still make it feel believable?
I think people put way to much emphasis on "Realism" in games, when that is not what pulls people in, it's consistency of the art and the believability of the world. Your garden example was great, realism is over rated and it's what people think they want in games, but it's not. People want strong art direction, thought out lighting that leads the player, surfaces that react to light in interesting ways etc. Realism does not make pretty images, overexaggerating and stylization does. I also think that currently, path tracing is still way to early for games, as even with ray tracing it's just so hard to hit a stable FPS and is impossible without an upscaler. I would prefer if people could get Lumen to run on worse cards than even the 30 series before making it the standard of gaming.

I’ve Been playing the hell out of the Remnant series lately and will continue this weekend. I remember your “before you buy”video mentioning that the Remnant story is generic and the Gameplay is where it’s at. Well, after starting with Chronos and now on Remnant 1, I think the story is as rich and intriguing as any good novel!

Recently just got a ps5 about a week ago with a backlog of a lot of ps5 upgrades like cyberpunk, gta online, etc. Spiderman 2 is still very much the main game being played rn
I recently got FFXVI, RE:4, and Dead Space during BF, so probably going to start one of those this weekend. I also just got the plat for Dead Island 2 and beat the Haus dlc for it. It was cool but short and only introduced one new weapon type.

This generation - true realism in graphics. Next generation - full deformation and destruction. I don't just want a game that looks real, I want levels and maps that I can blow up and rearrange.
We used to have that , I dont expect they will ever add it again tho , as graphics get better games get worse , they focus on looks over gameplay

Tribes was my first internet only game. I loved it and still do. I remember discovering how to surf via a bug. I was a beta tester for Time Warner's Roadrunner, so my internet was stupid fast at the time and my location.
Got the platinum for Dead Island 2 honestly I wanted more. So many good things about this game. Sad there’s only going to be 2 DLCs 😢
Hopefully dead Island 3 will come close to being as good as the first game, di2 was kinda dissapointing other than the gore/graphics

It’s hard to believe that GTA 5 came out on the XBOX 360 and PS3. We’ve already gone through another generation and are well into a second and that game is still going strong.

they are just planning to lose the console war every generation now. their first party output is still largely underwhelming. There is no console war in the eyes of Microsoft because they have already stomped Sony and Nintendo in profits and could buy them both 5x over, Microsoft is near the top of Fortune 500 and competes with Apple whereas Sony and Nintendo aren’t even close to the top. I don’t care about exclusivity I prefer my Series X over PS5 but it’s more for profit than exclusivity for Microsoft

I think Bethesda is just failing to accept that there are alot of valid complaints with starfield and people are getting fed up with them recycling the some of the same old formula, whilst getting rid of others parts. Just makes its miles wide but an inch deep
It sucks too cause id buy it if the fixed some of the issues but idk if they will ever pull their head's out of their ass long enough to gain some humility and give some QOL updates
Wrong wrong wrong. Couldn't be more wrong or clueless. The Bethesda formula is WHAT WE COME FOR. The incredible depth and freedom is WHAT WE COME FOR. The modability is to completely change the game is WHAT WE COME FOR. There is a REASON that Skyrim is one of the most successful games of all time across multiple generations.
@cenciende9401 expecting the same formula would be fine if they improved things. There really isn't much depth to any of the factions. While the modding is a fantastic point, why should modders have to continue to fix the same problems game after game? And to that point, being able to change the game to what you wanted shows that the base game could've been better to you. Why did Bethesda go for quantity over quality with procedurally generated worlds that are boring and barren instead of hand building a few really good ones. We can happily disagree but resorting to insults about one being clueless won't get anyone to really consider your view valid, have a great day.

the killer on this one is that it's currently 5v5... T2 did 64 player servers on release and was modded for 128 player servers. that was the fun part for me...
The original Tribes was revolutionary, both for leaving Quake style enclosed arenas behind for HUGE outdoor environments and for class based FPS team gameplay. It had driving/flying vehicles but everyone used "skiing", which was a movement glitch that became a core feature. Will Wright was fascinated by the way the gameplay promoted team based cooperation at a time when almost all communication was by typing and macros. I played it on a 56k modem and while I'm sure the graphics would hurt my eyes today at the time I found the realism of the vast outdoor settings breathtaking. This concludes today's video game history lesson.
Why aren't there intelligent lifeforms in Starfield? Such a missed opportunity to include that while also allowing you to play as different alien races.
They went for realism , honestly I'm glad there's enough syfy with wacky aliens out there so I'm good with starfield being grounded
Probably because it’d be a mess, they had human history planned out, now you gotta shove aliens in, and then give them factions, meanwhile, they wanted more of a sci-fi aesthetic with the only fantasy bits being from the unity, but with aliens comes alien tech, and alien tech is generally more fantastical which means it’s gonna compete with the unity, and we haven’t even come to the design point, or how they speak, or why there’s no alien starborn, what did the aliens do during the mech wars, why didn’t they contact us sooner, are we at war?, it would have certainly been interesting, but the game would be fundamentally different and not so much about the unity, it’d have to be bigger, way bigger, it might somewhat ruin the game, like building a bridge on a skyscraper, the thing has to have support from the beginning to the end, bethesda might not be the studio for the job, at least not right now, maybe in a future game

@@OkItsJustSean on a universal or even galactic scale? it's almost mathematically impossible for there >not< to be other intelligent life out there, somewhere... it's just a matter of where. there are something like 3 trillion known galaxies, each of which have a few hundred billion starts (the Milky Way is estimated to have 200-400 billion), and even if 0.001 percent have a viable ecosphere, that's still a loooooooot of potential life out there.
the issue is the >scale< that needs to be considered. the universe is dozens of billions of lightyears across, >that we know of

What finally led me to uninstalling Starfield (got it on Gamepass) was the realization that I was absolutely sick of walking/running everywhere. I could handle the load times, I could handle the inventory limitations, but how long it took to get anywhere was the last straw for me. Over a thousand planets isn't a big draw when you realize if you want to explore them all, it will be by foot.

@anirbandutta7371clearly you haven't played the game. Ground vehicles should atleast been a feature. You can't just "mod" it. Walking around is incredibly boring and jumping and boosting just to cover a few seconds sucks.

I've said many times in comments prior that the ABK acquisition was evidence that Microsoft is seeking to become an ecosystem, let alone comments suggesting such by Phil Spencer. This proposed new strategy is very well meant to recoup the cost of that acquisition. Well, Microsoft may want Gamepass on Nintendo and PlayStation, but safe to say Nintendo and Sony don't, considering they've already their own respective services and the Gamepass model itself is totally antithetical to Sony and Nintendo's business strategy: TO SELL GAMES.
Phil Spencer clearly said Game Pass is not coming to Playstation and Nintendo consoles.

And he said this A DAY AGO (December 2nd), but the article at the 5:36 mark (of this video that was published December 1st) containing the quote by Tim Stuart made the proposed Gamepass migration (at the time) abundantly clear. Also, in my comment I stated, '...suggested as such...' pertaining to Phil on record saying he no longer views Sony and Nintendo as direct competitors.
Besides, this more or less reinforces my original point. Despite all of the market speak, at the end of the day, Phil realizes how VERY unlikely Nintendo and Sony being receptive to having Gamepass on their respective storefronts being a thing.
@@DanteMasaru Tim Stuart doesn't make decisions at the top. He also said something regarding Bethesda acquisition two years ago and some people assumed all Bethesda games will be timed exclusives to Xbox.
@@daksans6764 Tim Stuart is the CFO of XBOX, though. Meaning he can call shots, but like most company hierarchies, there's someone above who gets the final say. Thus, his quote was something not taken lightly given the number outlets that ran with it.
@@DanteMasaru Phil Spencer and now Sarah Bond are the ones who call the shots and they have openly stated they have no intention to put game pass on rival consoles because then Xbox brand will be totally irrelevant and will be dead and they will be at the mercy of other platform holders to sell game pass just like Microsoft is at the mercy of Apple and Google and they have no control over App Store and Google Playstore.

Unreal engine 5 was released in April of 2022. AAA games take roughly 5 years to create. Expect something with that realistic forest to release around 2027 or 2028 at the earliest....
And that's IF any game can run with it and anything more than a walking Sim. Will probably only be the newest tech PC.
Ps6 will be out at that time probbably.

Playing some Remnant 2 DLC this weekend and a second playthrough of BG3 with Patch 5 that just came out.
Except the developers weren’t replying to comments saying that they’re working to improve the game. They were deflecting and talking about how some of the worst parts of their game were designed that way!
Also this was on negative Steam reviews, not simple comments. I don't take issue with them responding, but the actual content of the responses are a bad look. Bethesda's customer support team has been pretty bad ever since Fallout 76's launch (500 atoms as a sorry for the nylon bag, as an example).

We've been seeing such realistic demos for years, ever since UE4. Still waiting to see it in a game. Then I will be impressed.
The thing about these demos is that I bet it sacrifices a LOT to get that graphically impressive, and once you throw in NPCs, scripting, interactable items, etc it becomes too performance heavy and that's why we haven't seen that level of graphics in an actual game.

Despite the negative reputation Rockstar games has got over recent 5 years , what they did with red dead 2 and probably about to do with GTA6 is something that companies like Ubisoft, Blizzard or Bethesda can only dream of in the games they release
Rockstar make good games, and apply bad monetisation practices to them. The other three you mentioned do that but their games aren't even good.

They do not have any such reputation. As you say their last release was the absolute masterpiece and cultural phenomenon RDR2. Nothing has changed that.

With AI they should be able to install photos of an area and the AI should be able to replicate it perfectly in a short amount of time
Here's the thing, game developers are already undervalued and treat like shit by publishers, that increased focus of efficiency is only going to make the working conditions worse.
@@icravedeath.1200 that makes no sense, if AI is used for the environments then developers and focus on things that require imagination it should, if the people in charge don't turn into bigger assholes then they are now should take some of the burden off the developers. If managers can't see that then the management needs to be tossed. If you use mostly AI you get a shitty game because computers don't have an imagination and I still think Starfield was made mostly with AI and it shows, because if Bethesda has fallen that far in video games story telling them it's time to get rid of Todd Howard because he has no standards anymore and I don't want him near Elder Scrolls 6

In this kind of context, AI is just powerful procedural generation. Nothing new or revolutionary, just increased performance.

I love xbox and the idea of gamepass but ultimately got rid of it because I'm too busy to play games really and spending $16 a month on another thing is hard. I think gamepass at first was cool but I personally have had a hard time finding games I'm truly into. For instance starfield is $70 to outright buy so at $16 a month if I beat it in under 5 months its worth it. Plus all the other games I can play. However, I honestly am sick of getting nickle and dimed by every possible streaming service. You have xbox, then playstations price hike, disney+, hulu, netflix, regal unlimited or AMCs version. Instead of spending $100 a month on tv and internet or a game or two we're spending literally $200-$400 easily on other stuff. In this economy? sheesh. I know its big picture but I'm at the point where no game is worth $70 and I'm not paying for more than 2 streaming services.
GTA 6 I feel so indifferent for, probably because it'll be so far out but I don't know I think as it sits going over 10 years since 5 came out and really all they did was add shark cards and then make it so you earned less and have to spend real money or days to unlock one thing ruined the game for any casual players. Hoping they go back to the core GTA 5 online with the early days. Also concerned with how they top the interaction of the storyline characters from 5.
Your math is way off. You barely have to play one game a month to make gamepass more than worth it. If you're only playing 2 games a year then I'm not even sure how you justify owning an xbox in the first place
Honestly, I love the fact that Bethesda is snapping back. People can write anything they want, even if untrue, and then it influences others perception… but when a company does it everyone throws a hissy fit. The customer definitely isn’t always right :)

I was huge into Tribes. I created a bunch of indie maps for Tribes:Vengeance. I'm too old to play those kinds of games now. My next indie game coming out soon is a platformer.

I'm willing to bet that the lighting looks like that because they are using an HDRI. Basically using a picture of outside wrapped around the map. It makes the lighting look fantastic with Unreal. Props to the people/person who put that together.

Tribes was great. I was always partial to Unreal Tournament. Rocked both though.
