    Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference:
    0:00 - Intro
    1. 0:03 {The Upside-Down Kingdom Bible} What are your thoughts on the newly released Zondervan NIV Upside-Down Kingdom Bible, edited by Dr. Preston Sprinkle?
    2. 1:18:50 {Helping Children Grasp the Gospel} As a pastor to the youth for so long, what would you recommend parents do with their children to help them have a personal relationship with God?
    3. 1:21:00 {Moses/Genesis: When/How?} When/how did Moses acquire the contents and narrative of Genesis?
    4. 1:22:27 {Is Marriage an Oath?} James 5: 12 says not to make oaths, but isn’t getting married making an oath?
    5. 1:26:35 {Overcoming the Grip of Sin} What’s the balance between the Holy Spirit changing us, and us trying to do good works and love God? I just feel so stuck in my sin. I don’t know how to get out of this habit. I’m scared my repentance isn’t real.
    6. 1:31:29 {Sin in the Millennium?} Will there be sin in the Millennium? Will that affect our glorified bodies and our lives in the Millennium?
    7. 1:34:37 {Corporal Punishment: More Harm than Good?} I’m a new parent doing research. I’ve heard that the Bible supports corporal punishment, but also that scientific studies say corporal punishment has negative outcomes. How do you reconcile these two things?
    8. 1:38:10 {Disciples: Not Recognizing Jesus?} There are some Scriptures where the disciples don’t recognize the resurrected Jesus. Is this because they are prevented by Jesus, or did He actually look different?
    9. 1:41:29 {Water & Blood: 1 John 4} What is the significance of the water and the blood in 1 John 4:6, 8?
    10. 1:45:03 {Relationships with Family in Eternity} What do you think our relationship will be like with family members in Heaven? Will we know each other? Will we still sort of be related? I know there won't be marriage.
    11. (Bonus Q!) 1:46:45 Who's your favorite LOTR character? I bet it's Treebeard.

      Is there any chance the Tiptons and Noones are pathological liars or are they in fact morally perfect as shone to me? I despise being around them. I cannot stand anyone of them. It is a nightmare being around them. I do not want to be around people who convey perfection in themselves. Is someone trying to show I am deceptive. I will take any job that gets me financial independence from the government pensions of Bonnie and Terry Tipton and away from them. I never like being around them because they think they do have the answers to everything. They and the Noones are either morally perfect and perfect in all ways and get nothing but success, or they are extremely good at deception.

    On question 5, little tip, if you are trying to stop doing something sinful, don't spend all day thinking about not doing it, that will just make you want to do it more because you are obsessing over it. Instead focus on other things, plan a trip or new project, something that will take time and energy so you have something else to push those thoughts out. Some stray thoughts will always brake through, but it will become less and less over time till you just forget about it.

    Mike, I've only just discovered your channel in the last 6 months or so, but I have to tell you, it has been SO enlightening, educational, and thought provoking to hear what you share with us. You are very clear to claim when it is your personal, well studied thoughts, but most of all, your knowledge of scripture itself helps pull out verses to support or condemn ideas we struggle with on a regular basis-the enemy never rests from trying to confuse, paralyze, and derail our thinking. I appreciate how you share when they are opinions vs. solidly believable (by yourself and/or Biblical historians over the years). And I also value how you willingly hash out your thought process right here with us. Your honesty and heart to be true to the call is obvious. Thank you for doing all the work you do to bring us this ministry-you have truly been an encourager to me to dig into scripture more and hold the world (and my own notions) up to it on a daily basis.

    Shepherding a Child’s Heart is an excellent resource about disciplining children (not just punishment), and Paul David Tripp’s parenting resources are good and godly, as well!

    • @janicephillips6813
      @janicephillips6813 11 дней назад +4

      And each child is different. Our philosophy in raising our children was that they needed to obey us immediately (we raised them over seas, so there is a safety issue here, too). We did not "count to three". They needed to comply immediately. And age was also a factor. 0 to 5 or 6, we were more strict. Even a nursing baby, if he or she bit me I would thump their cheek and say "no". Their little expression😮 would demonstrate their shock. But not that that was disobedience, but we wanted them to understand it was unacceptable behavior. We had one child who was very compliant (outwardly) who didn't need to be corrected as often physically. But she did benefit from conversation about her inward and often disguised rebellion. We finally got to the place with her around age eight, that she understood that issues of the heart were just as, if not more important to have self control than outward defiance. Our aim was always to demonstrate repentance (we apologized to our children when we reacted wrongly), and that Jesus paid for our sins so we can have an unhindered relationship with him. That we needed his strength to obey, and he always forgives.
      All that to say, corporal punishment is an affective tool for most children under the age of five. After that, most children will respond to a "look" that communicates they need to change their behaviour😂. Which comes in handy in social situations. You have to be present and involved with your children.
      I've said enough...

    • @Firstfalconfree
      @Firstfalconfree 5 дней назад

      I would encourage folks to do a word study of the rod verses. The age referenced in those verses was "young man", as in someone on the cusp of adulthood. American culture says to hit/spank/swat little kids, and to back off once when get older, but that's nowhere in the Bible.
      Remember also that a young man who defies his parents could be put to death, according to Mosaic Law. This punishment was literally to save their lives (and soon, not a vague "someday this discipline could affect their adult lives").
      Never in Scripture does it advocate for striking a nursing baby in the face, no matter how softly you do it.

      The problem is that every translation is already an interpretation. I prefer older translations that don't insert modern issues into the text and are as close to the original languages as possible. I still know some Greek from studying theology about 20 years ago so I also have some Greek new testaments and interlinear translations. I prefer the KJV (for linguistic reasons) and in German the Luther Bible from 1545 (with modern spelling) and 1912. As well as the "Elberfelder Bible".

      @joelr2302 11 дней назад +8

      @MrSeedi76 the problem is that older translations aren't closer to the original language. We have found more manuscripts, done more textual criticisms and found more historical and archeological evidence to inform our modern translations. That doesn't mean every new translation does it the right way, but to say that older translations are automatically closer to the original is not true.

    “Our desires themselves ARE sinful.” Thanks for pointing that out. What I take from that is this Bible seeks to reduce the idea that ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God. Another way to elevate man and devalue the glory of God. Especially with it saying government should step in and determine income… but that is fallen man putting itself in place of God 🤦🏼‍♀️.

      Scripture doesn't say "all sin".
      It says "all HAVE sinned" (past tense).
      Romans 3. People think they know it but few read it and even fewer read it in context.
      (Especially the fact that Paul quotes two psalms which are describing "fools" and "the ungodly").
      Romans 6 & 1st John chapter 3 do *NOT* contradict Romans 3.

    • @Heather.Isaiah43.1

      @@leenieledejo6849 What is your purpose in arguing this? What point are you trying to get across? The fool says in his heart he does not sin… and Romans 6 and 1 John 3 relate to people who are children of God. Not the unsaved…. But again I don’t even know what point you are trying to make.
      Are you really just mad I didn’t put the past tense in… because that doesn’t change the context of Romans 3:9-12. Or Proverbs 20:9. Or Isaiah 64:4

    I bought a C.S. Lewis Bible the other day because it was on sale. It's filled with relevant things he has written as passages throughout the Bible. I then thought to myself, "I wonder what C.S. Lewis would think if I took this back in time to him and explained to him what it is?" I think that maybe he would have been mortified by it, that in any way anything he said would be considered worthy to be included alongside the Scripture as a "Bible."
    I understand the desire to create more interesting bibles, but at some point I consider if the publishers have any safeguards in defining what a bible should be and what it shouldn't.

Everything else is the liberal (and often unbiblical) position. Mike had far more critiques than he had positive things to say. The only difference is he explained in detail the issues with the Bible.

    Just like you started out talking about capital punishment being used wrong, I think parents often use corporal punishment wrong. They use it as a lazy way to parent. In my opinion it’s one of the least effective forms of punishment, and as someone who came from a culture where it’s very common (Latino and Black mixed culture), I’ve also seen the effects of when you teach a child that the way to discipline someone and help them understand is by physical punishment. I’ve seen so many of those same people are the ones more commonly getting into fights and committing violent crimes.
    Also, when the rod is used in the Bible, it is as a way to guide sheep. The Lord is my shepherd, His rod guides me and conforts me. Shepherds did not commonly use their rod to beat their sheep to help them understand. When the good shepherd finds his lost sheep, he doesn’t get angry and beat it with his rod. This is not anti-punishment. I think showing consequences is one of the most important parts of disciplining your kids so they don’t have worse outcomes when they’re older, but beating your kid should be a last resort. Thank God he didn’t immediately use a rod to punish me, although I did feel the consequences of my sin and He helped me turn from so many sins. Be a good strong parent, teach them, make sure they understand why they’re being disciplined, and believe me, a temporary corporal punishment is almost always the least effective. It goes quickly, unlike longer term discipline they can reflect on and actually touches the heart.

      As someone who is a shepherd (of sheep, not people), it is always weird to me to hear folks talking about the shepherd's rod being used for beating sheep. I'm sure the lifestyle of a nomadic shepherd in Bible times was VERY different than a modern regenerative shepherd, I can't imagine smacking my sheep around with my crook. A shove every now and then, absolutely, but not hitting with an intent to make them feel pain/punishment. It's for guidance, to show them which way they should go and keep them away from danger, not for punishing them if they stray off the path.

    I will not touch Sprinkle with a 10ft pole anymore. I was not familiar with his work before my old church took myself and a few other staff members to his “Exiles in Babylon” conference in 2023. Preston got up and said that we couldn’t call anything that happened at the conference “Woke” because that is “empire language”.
    Then the next speakers spoke about how the handicapped wouldn’t be healed in heaven because their ailments are part of their identity and did a Native American land acknowledgement. Sprinkle said “don’t say woke” right before the conference exploded with wokeism.
    Then Greg Boyd got up and said he denied inerrancy and was a hopeful universalist. It was bonkers.
    And a young man I’ve discipled for years used Sprinkle to deconstruct a complementary view of marriage.
    I know Sprinkle is contributing some good to the Christian world. But I cannot & will not interact or recommend him to anyone I pastor ever again.

    Maybe your point is that this could have been more clear, but i don't believe that the commentary in this Bible about homosexuality is saying it's ok to think about it and lust about it. Preston would agree with you that lusting and letting your mind think about doing these actions is a sin. I think the point (especially since I read Preston Sprinkles book "people to be loved") they are making is that the sin isn't the temptation, but acting on the temptation, whether that be mentally or physically.

    Another potential reference implied by the "water and blood" verse from Q#9.... The tradition of pouring wine and water on the altar at the Feast of Tabernacles. It was "on the greatest day of the feast" (the final day in which the water and wine is processed through the city with revelry up to the temple where the priest pours them out on the altar) that we are told Jesus speaks out above the crowd and says, "come to me all who thirst ........ and out of him will flow streams of living water". The wine poured out represents blessing of the harvest, and also symbolizes the blood of the sacrifices. The water is poured out as a prayer for the winter rains, and also as a symbolic representation of the river of living water which flows from the altar in Ezekiel's vision. Jesus laid claim to both those symbols by his proclamation at that moment in the festival. Maybe john is referencing that in some way? Just a thought....

      @@HH-lr2zt yeah that was another reference that came to mind for me too. I do think that separating the blood from the water into two distinct points (sacrificial death and baptism) is off the mark. Whatever we look for as an interpretation, I favor the notion that we are looking for a scene in which blood and water are tied together. I could be wrong, but that's my inclination.

    • @moriah1901
      @moriah1901 10 дней назад

      @@HH-lr2zt another thought.... Ezekiel 16:8-9. "Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you [Israel], and you became Mine, says the Lord God. Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil". Here we have an image of the first covenant, which is described using WATER, BLOOD, and OIL. Interestingly, oil and SPIRIT are connected ideas in prophetic visions (see the vision of Zerubabbel in Zechariah 4). So here in Ezekiel we have all three concepts!
      I think overall it isn't as cut and dry as "the blood and water refers to THIS verse...". I think it is more likely that blood and water are symbolic images which repeatedly appear together in the context of God's covenants with mankind, and that in some way, they all express a mystery which will become fully made clear when we see His heavenly throne come down to earth.

Throughout the years since I realized it was sin in Gods eyes, I have continued to renounce it, seek forgiveness and trust in Gods ability to accomplish my freedom. I don’t want to confuse my brain that someone else’s perspective gets laid onto the page of Scripture (I’m a very visual learner). If I’m struggling to understand a passage, I want to be able to check several different interpretations outside of my Bible. It also helps me examine the text harder & hopefully let the Holy Spirit lead me in understanding. Just my personal preference.

      @AZmom60 No I understand that. I had already done a lot of deep studying before I read the Scofield, and I was more pleasantly surprised to find that the Scofield seemed to really confirm a lot of my understandings and interpretations. It didn't distract me because I had already drawn those conclusions and made those realizations for myself. But I definitely see how that wouldn't necessarily be the case for everyone. If you aren't interested in an annotated Bible, then I would definitely recommend getting an Interlinear Bible to further your personal studies and understanding. Especially if you want to learn more about the context for the time that those scriptures were written in.

    It's interesting that you critique the Upside-down Bible for not telling you what position they take on issues. (Isn't that the point of the articles?) I have used numerous Study Bibles and Commentaries that have not told me they have a very conservative perspective. Yet I have still been able to evaluate what they have to say using my own critical thinking. I realise you have landed very heavily on the Complementarian side of the debate in women. (I was very disappointed with your last video calling Egalitarians to repent as you had started the series sounding like you were willing to acknowledge that they might have some valid points even if you don't agree.) If people want to only read articles that agree with their own position, give them a list of approved authors. Otherwise, exposing yourself to other viewpoints can be very helpful in clarifying your views and correcting errors. If only for that, I'm happy to buy this Bible.
    On another note, I find that those who are attacked from both sides, as Preston Sprinkle is, are often worth listening to. You may not agree with all they say, but at least they are willing to try to find truth rather than fit in.

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  10 дней назад +4

      I tried to be clear in my video here that the problem is NOT that they have one-sided articles but that they advertise themselves as having theological diversity when that is not really the case. When articles on a particular subject seem to regularly come from people of generally the same camp and nudge people into that camp, it’s not what was advertised. I said this multiple times in my video. If a strongly conservative source pretended they were giving theological diversity then it would be misleading.

    • @4n1l0u
      @4n1l0u 10 дней назад +4

      @MikeWinger that's fair enough. I agree that diversity is claimed and should be evident. I guess what concerns me is that you see diversity as merely representing the two camps you recognise within Christianity - conservative and progressive. My experience of Christianity is much broader than that and it seems the Upside-down Kingdom Bible incorporates diversity that just doesn't include those of your particular camp. Perhaps they should have. But looking at those they have does seem to cover a wider range of Christian expression than I usually see coming out of US Christian circles.

      I don’t know how this study bible defines social justice; but I do known that a lot of people don’t actually know what social justice is, mostly because ungodly people/movements have co-opted/stolen the term to support ungodly views and now some Christians have forgotten what real social justice looks like so they have started shying away from using that term.
      Social Justice is a term, originating from Christian communities that traditionally used it to describe how people in society, especially those in a better position in life should help the poor and suffering. For example real pro-lifers especially those who support Whole Life Ethic views are considered supporters of social justice. Don’t let cultural liberals (social liberals) steal the term “social justice” so they can erroneously redefine it into support for debauchery, showing off how well they’re good at virtue signaling, into support for LGBT ideology, support for promoting sexual fetishes, objectification, misusing Stalinist and Marxist-Leninist rhetoric for inauthentic political posturing (or support for things such as “woke capitalism,” “pink capitalism,” hipster racism, and hipster sexism); because these things are NOT social justice.
      Real social justice is a sub-category of justice that includes the opposition to racism (support for racial equality - racial equity), support for gender equality (in ways compatible with the Christian views of complimentarianism and theologically conservative biblical egalitarianism), human rights, civil rights, and helping the poor, widow, orphans, the disenfranchised; as well as opposition to “ill-gotten treasures” that cheat people, the perversion of justice, oppression of the poor, partiality, and opposition to the theft of wages. Social justice is a term that was born out of ways Christians used to describe aspect of true Biblical teachings that focused on helping those that are in need, social justice is just one type of justice, another important but different type of justice is penal justice; penal justice focuses on disciplinary actions or punishments for sins and criminal acts. If you want to see what real social justice is read - - - James‬ ‭5:1-6‬; James‬ ‭2:1-4‬; Proverbs‬ ‭14:31‬; Psalms‬ ‭82:3‬; Leviticus‬ ‭19:15‬; Isaiah‬ ‭1:17‬; Matthew‬ ‭25‬:‭42‬-‭43‬; Proverbs‬ ‭10:2‬; Proverbs‬ ‭28:27‬; Galatians‬ ‭3:28‬; Matthew‬ ‭28:19-20‬; John‬ ‭3:16-17‬; Mark‬ ‭16:15‬; Acts‬ ‭1:8‬; John‬ ‭4:9-10‬; Exodus‬ ‭23:9‬; and Leviticus‬ ‭19‬:‭34‬; among many others.
      Evangelical is an international interdenominational/ecumenical theologically label that most of U.S.-American secular media mistakes for a political ideology, American Civil Religion, or Ceremonial Deism due to the Republican Party trying to convince Evangelicals to vote for them in exchange for maintaining socially conservative (cultural conservative) values (which they don’t even do a good job of), convincing non-Christian/non-Evangelical Political Conservatives into adopting the term “Evangelical” as a synonym for “Right-Wing Conservative,” & Pew keeps reinforcing the false Evangelical vs People of Color (POC) dichotomy where they regard Evangelical as a synonym for White Evangelical & lump all Black Protestants together making it difficult for ppl to compare without access to raw data bc it doesn’t differentiating between Black Evangelicals & Black Mainline Protestants even though most Majority Black denominations r Evangelical, & ignoring o/POC Evangelicals/combing them w/Pew’s mostly White-Normative “Evangelical” category. It’s mostly White Evangelicals that vote Republican (most of them being conservative on social and economic issues/are single-issue social conservative voters) while Black Evangelicals tend to vote Democratic (although they mostly hold socially conservative values, and theologically conservative beliefs, they tend to be economically progressives). If Pew started recognizing Black Evangelicals as Evangelical like Gallup does, it would drop the prevalence of Evangelicals voting Republican (Political Conservative) down to an extent within their data. Too many outsiders erroneously think that Evangelicalism is a White American cultural phenomenon or conservative political ideology. Conservative Christianity ≠ Republican or Political Conservative.

    About the corporal punishment issue:
    Almost every study I have seen on the issue has no distinction between spanking and physical abuse, which makes them in general unhelpful to the issue.
    I have seen many examples of good spanking families, where the kids are doing very well, usually the most wellbehaved kids around. But if you lump them in with families where parents goes after their kids with a stick not because they did anything wrong but because of their own bad temper, how can you study the issue fairly?
    Also, what are the mental effects of the alternatives? Shouting, isolation, removing of rewards...
    Finally, how do you measure if the discipline has been positive? Almost all disciplining feels bad short term, as it says in Heb 12:11
    "For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. "

    I have to protest that the contributors are not all progressively "woke" by any stretch. For case in point, I'm not a pacifist, I'm a Just War adherent. On letter carriers, I'd invite Mike Winger and viewers to consider the work of Peter Head on the topic. On healthcare, oh boy, every Western democracy from Norway to New Zealand has universal health care OF SOME FORM (there are many, many varieties and models), but America does not, preferring a more "every man for himself" system rather than building a healthcare system that is effective and affordable with a good safety net.

    Dear Brother, I have watched you on and off for a while now. You are obviously a dedicated Christian who studies the Word and you are trying to help others. You desire truth in your heart. That is of utmost importance. I believed most of my life in the pre-millenial, literal 1000 year reign of Christ and the tribulation. I knew there were Scriptures that didn't agree with this, but just figured the theologians knew more than I. Praise God, someone took the time to lovingly show me the truth. It was such an eye-opener. Please take time to study the history of Dispensationalism Darb, who espoused it, and why. The Scriptures that didn't "fit" with this teaching suddenly all made sense, and I was set free! Please seek God's wisdom and ask Him to guide you in this matter. Lovingly from a Sister.

    It seemed to me (just from what I saw/read) that the woman OT professor was suggesting that women focus on studying books of the Bible that have women and women's experiences front and center, and maybe not study books where men are the "main character." Did she say not to ever read other parts of the Bible? No. But it comes across that she's suggesting a self-focused, identity-led approach to reading Scripture to some degree. (A large degree, I would bet, if I looked into this woman's theology more.) Is this really the goal of a women's Bible study? How much of myself can I find in Scripture?! I can't imagine reading the Bible and saying to myself, "Hey, there aren't many women in this part!!" And considering how women/women's issues is the theme with the most extra material in this new Bible, the intention seems clear and not good.

      I'm not happy with the title of this "study"Bible, as I have always taught the book of Matthew, especially the sermon on the mount, as Jesus "upside down" kingdom, because Jesus demonstrates that in His kingdom we are self sacrificing, and not self promoting, like the kingdoms of the day, now i hope people will not think I condone this bible and its commentary, so grateful Mike addressed this.

    • @janicephillips6813
      @janicephillips6813 9 дней назад

      @@Wren_Farthing how so? When Jesus told Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world, he was offering a paradigm shift. Servant leadership and self-sacrifice was not at all on their list of virtues of a kingdom. Even Jesus's own disciples got it wrong when they were arguing for the best positions in Jesus's kingdom. Jesus had to reteach them the virtues of humility, of the upside down model of the last being first and if you want to be great in God's kingdom, learn to be the Servant of all.

    • @Wren_Farthing
      @Wren_Farthing 9 дней назад

      @@janicephillips6813 I agree. I don’t know all the specifics of this study Bible, or whether I would align with all it suggests, but the bent of it sounds right along the lines of the paradigm shift you’re describing here. Having followed some of the contributors, I’m familiar with their beliefs. They, too, see their theology as being rooted in Jesus’ teachings, like the sermon on the mount. Jesus was teaching a truth that ran counter to the societal power structures that humans consistently formulate. Human systems and hierarchies are based on power, strength, glory, achievement, wealth, etc. Everything Jesus did and said challenged those norms.
      I commented on the point of pacifism elsewhere, but I’ll mention it here, too. War will have no part in the new kingdom. It is specifically borne of the fall, it leads to death, suffering and sorrow, all of which is related to sin. We shouldn’t be confused by God’s working through actual war or metaphors of war metaphors in scripture. War is a relic of the fall. If Jesus’ redemptive action was a shift, His followers represent this shift to the world. This is why pacifism is a valid Christian topic. I don’t decry Just War Theory, and there is always room for debate in responding to a physical threat, but when I see Christians dismiss pacifism out of hand, I wonder if they are reading the same scripture as I am. If the shift put humankind on a trajectory toward Jesus’ kingdom, and we are the messengers for that kingdom, our attitudes and actions should primarily be rooted in peace. This is a counter-cultural idea, truly an upside-down response.
      I would extend this attitude to the 2nd Amendment debates. It’s disheartening to see Christians called “woke”, or “leftists” for pointing out that guns are instruments of war, and we are plowshare people. Again, I’m not making a soapbox argument, only pointing out a reflex I see in some Christians. The extent to which American Christianity is obstructed by its attachment to human political norms is not so different from the culture Jesus was speaking into.

    I don't know if anyone will read this, but for Q9 about the water and the blood bear testimony, it's significant to look at how (same author!) John 19 describes Jesus's side being pierced, and water and blood flow from it, and John says "at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness-his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth-that you also may believe." (19:34-35)
    The blood is the blood shed for us, flowing from Jesus. The water, also flowing from Jesus, may well be the picture John (same author!) uses for the Holy Spirit:
    "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit" (Jn 7:38-39)
    "The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (Jn 4:14)
    It may be John's talking about Jesus's blood shed for us as a testimony that we should believe, and the Holy Spirit from Christ sent to us as a testimony that we should believe.

    Gentle parenting does work. The problem is that people mistake permissive parenting as gentle parenting. Gentle parenting involves teaching and setting boundaries. Children still have to obey, but hitting your child isn’t done.
    I have six children who I did not spank and I don’t believe the Bible teaches it. My children love God and are respectful servants of the community.
