The thing about Iceman is that he`s not a villain. He`s a professional and Maverick is, well, a maverick. They just had clashing personalities and had to get to know each other and trust each other.
Hi Mary, The issue that caused Goose's death was based on actual issues with the F-14 Tomcat. The original engines were intended for an earlier aircraft, and would stall out at certain angles of flight from air disruption (the 'jetwash' they spoke of). In addition, the canopy would go straight up when released during the fliers' ejection, which, since they were in a flat spin (straight down, no forward movement), meant that when Goose ejected, he went straight up and hit it. The problems were corrected IRL by new engines and the canopy was set up to travel towards the rear during ejection. Enjoyed the react! Looking forward to Top Gun: Maverick.
Jetwash is just the exhaust from the jet in front. The hot expanding gases will suffocate the engine causing a stall. Nothing to do with aoa in that case.
Call signs (i.e. Maverick, Goose, Ice Man, etc...) are typically picked for you by your squadron/class mates, usually based on memorable/humorous moments or behavior. Top Gun (Film) call signs are very simplified for ease of identification.
Finally! A girl who appreciates the effort Maverick put in when he sung for Charlie. It makes no sense that someone would be embarrassed in that situation.

It meant to make fun mostly. ie 'Goose' because he is a mother figure, everyone likes him, 'Mother Goose', 'Maverick' cause he gambles and moves dangerously, and so on.
You will love the Top Gun: Maverick movie. 36 years after this to make the sequel but maybe was worth the wait to get it right. While you will see many call-backs to this movie TG2 stands on it's own even if had never seen this original. Enjoy and great reaction. 😀

Throwing Goose's Dog Tags into the ocean at the end signified an honorable "burial at sea" while letting go of the emotional baggage Maverick was carrying. A lot of real life flight footage was used in making this film which was quite a treat for audiences in 1986.

No one notices that Tim Robbins is in this movie because his face is behind a mask 99% of the time. It's Merlin. You only see him when everyone celebrates at the end.
As others have said Top Gun: Maverick is a good sequel for copying the trench fight scene from Star Wars: A New Hope when Luke destroys the Death Star. 👌🤣
There were only two Top Gun movies. This one (Original 1986) and the new one Top Gun: Maverick 2022. The fact that is 36 years later, its cool how he still looks very much the same. You will love the new one.
When I saw this movie as a kid, I asked my dad what maverick meant. He told me to look it up in the dictionary. That's when I learned that it originally referred to a cow without a herd, and then more recently was used to refer to someone who likes to go it alone or play by their own rules.
I am lucky enough to see those sunsets here in California and every time I drive by Marine Corp Air Station Miramar. The Navy moved out a while ago, but, it will always be Fighter Town USA to most of us. Loved this movie when it first came out, and I loved the new one as well. Funny thing is that some of my friends joined the Navy after this, and most of them are retiring now! LOL!
The soundtrack is phenomenal and the fighter jet action scenes still look excellent 30+ years later. Charlie Sheen made a comedy spoof of Top Gun it was Hot Shot in 1991
There's only one more Top Gun movie, and it's worth watching :-) Back in the day, this original was the go-to movie for people to test their home surround-sound speaker systems, because the sound design was kind of immersive and 3D.
I think this film came out in 1986. I've been waiting for the sequel since then. The sequel just came out this year. When I heard they were doing a sequel to Top Gun almost 40 years later, I was like "they're kidding right?". I saw it in the theater and it was hilarious, ridiculous and fun and entertaining. Everything a movie should be. I loved how they worked everything from the first movie into the second and included almost everyone.
You know it’s so interesting to watch modern reactions to old movies. Most young women today are creeped out by Maverick going into the women’s bathroom. The reason I find it fascinating is because the best directors are very familiar with their audience at the time they make the movie. Top gun was one of those movies in the 80’s that got men interested with military action and women interested with a love story. Maverick specifically goes in the bathroom because a majority of women in the 80’s determined that a man following a woman into the ladies room was hot, it would only be creepy if the guy was unattractive.
In the early 90s, my dad had a high end home theater system with surround sound, and this was the laserdisc he went to when he wanted to show it off to someone. As a result, I must have heard that final Indian Ocean dogfight at least a hundred times (even if I wasn't in the living room when he was playing it, he'd have the volume up high enough I was sure even the neighbors could hear it.)
Good on you. In the early 90s, we had a TV and a VCR. Recorded movies off network TV. Purchased from an ad in the paper, 60$ for the pair. My friends at school all had parents with disposable income though so I got to see how the other half lives once in awhile.
The guy in the back was called Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) and he couldn't fly the F-14 since there was no controls whatsoever in the aft cockpit. I've enjoyed your reaction, glad you had a blast with my fav movie.
I saw this in Colorado Springs when it came out, and on line in front of me were 4 young U.S. air force pilots seeing the movie for the second time. They were totally jazzed. It weird to think those guys are all around 60 years old now.
your reaction when they ejected is accurate. I don't think many people realize how violent the ejection sequence is. Those seats are made to have the crew out of of the aircraft almost instantly.
As a young Airedale Sailor back in 1978-1981, I had wondered how pilots got their call-sign, till one of the student pilots in our training squadron in El Centro, returned from a training mission without his canopy. His call sign became "Breezy". Some Officers are so much better than others, pilots get sorted out and mainly only the great officers are left, but all the best Officers I worked for in my 41 year career were all Mustangs. Top Gun was moved from San Diego to Fallon Nevada, which is where all Top Gun flights were flown, even most of these scenes were filmed in Nevada.
25:50 The backseater in an F-14 is called the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO). His job is to handle the radar (which has several modes, which means the operator needs particular training to operate it) as well as other electrical equipment at his station (which becomes a point sometime during Top Gun: Maverick). While he can, I believe, launch certain missiles and munitions, the pilot is traditionally the one who does that. And no, he doesn't have dual flight controls at his station.
Great stuff Mary that was a lot of fun. 36 years later for the sequel and I thought it was terrific. Given how the ex-fighter pilots say they really got their call-signs I think yours would inevitably be ‘ Love-scene’ ! 🙂
Watch Top Gun: Maverick right after this. I feel old when you're not that familiar with Meg Ryan. Our rom-com girl during the 80s and 90s. When Harry Met Sally (1989) is a classic.
I was not an aviator but my experience as a squid was that most nicknames are given by your peers to commemorate colossal errors in judgment and more colossal embarrassment.
25:57 Guy in the back is RIO - Radar intercept officer. Takes care of radar, communications, navigations and targetting. On newer two-seater fighters(F-18, F-15E), they are called WSO - Weapon systems officer. Some planes have doubled controls, F-14 did not as far as I know.
One of THE most quoted movies ever. I always find myself saying quotes. “Alright knock it off gentlemen. Let’s go home Viper has the lead”, “Talk to me Goose”, “The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies room”, “She’s lost that loving feeling”
Tony Scott (RIP), Ridley's brother, tends to have a particular aesthetic in his work. A lot of beautiful color work, shots in silhouette, dramatic slow motion, etc. Top Tony Scott suggestions for you Mary - The Hunger 1983 (with Susan Sarandon and David Bowie), Domino 2005 (with Kiera Knightly), and Unstoppable 2010 (with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine).
There were a couple of problems on the F14 that were shown when Goose dies. 1) the engines were prone to compressor stalls. This causes a flame out. Or loss of power and abrupt yaw movement. In this case disrupting the air flow to the second engine resulting in stall and flame out, 2) The ejection system had a timing issue resulting in ejection with the canopy potentially being in the way of the ejecting crew.
2) it wasn’t to do with the timing, the flat spin causes the canopy to hover instead of fly clear, that brief hover is long enough to obstruct the RIO seat. They did eventually develop an emergency jettison system to clear the canopy separately from the ejection sequence, and then even better they upgraded the engines to ones that didn’t stall so easily.
Cool reaction! The back-seater (RIO) in the F-14 operated the radar, which the pilot didn't have up front. The RIO had no control of the aircraft, just locking weapons to targets. He also assisted with communication and navigation. The newer jet fighters in the Navy can have a single pilot handling it all. A second crew member in some jets adds work-load relief to the pilot by handling what the RIO did in the older jets. Plus they offered an extra set of eyes to help spot bogeys. Cheers!
Song in the bar is " You've Lost That Loving Feeling" originally by The Righteous Brothers in 1965, and covered by various artists, with the most popular cover being by Hall & Oates in 1980.
Had a blast back then when this came out. I was living next to NAS Miramar. F14s and A4 jets would take off from the base, fly over me, then practice over the ocean, then fly over again on the return trip. That was fun! I heard them so many times, I could tell by the sound of the engines whether the jets were flying toward me, away or neither. And the McDonalds and Wendys was right on the other side of the fence from the main runway, off Miramar Road. You could watch the F14s practicing touch and goes on the runway while you ate a big mac! Very fun times!
You may had recognised the actor who sent Maverick and Goose to Top gun and later asks Maverick what is he gonna do at the end of the movie as Mr. Strickland from Back to the future.
5:51 to 6:09 "When you lost that loving feeling!" The most requested radio and TV soundtrack of the 20th century was more than 8,000,000 times in 37 years. The track smashed the record of the previous 64 years of commercial broadcasting.
The reason the went into a flat spin was the F-14 -A model had an issue with compressor failures. The engine flamed out and the trust from the unbalanced engine pushed it sideways, then it flamed out. If the pilot did not catch it fast enough, the plane would start it's spin. This was corrected when the plane was modified with new engines that did not have this problem. When it happed, the would not head out to sea per say, they would drop like a rock. Penny was mentioned in this movie for 2.5 seconds, remember that name for the next movie..
I drive professionally in the US, and i pull a "Maverick Pass" (passing lane, brakes, let the other pass, and return to normal cruising speed) so much vs other drivers following too close.
The base this was filmed at was Miramar which at the time was a Naval base, in 1998 or 99 they moved the Top Gun academy to Fallon in Nevada and we (the USMC) took back our base in San Diego.
I finally watch this recently from start to end and it was and is a wonderful movie especially with 3 classic songs, take my breath away, danger zone, and playing with the boys and a special mention for theme song. And then I watch Top Gun: Maverick and that was the perfect sequel to this just missing the great songs.
Fun Fact - There is an ex-JAG officer who did a YT video on this film and came to the conclusion that Maverick would be in jail in the first 10 minutes of this film.
Antagonistic behaviour toward an enemy pilot. Disobeying a direct order to land his plane. Riding a motorcycle alongside a runway. Riding said motorcycle without a helmet. Breaking, and engaging below the ‘hard deck’. High speed fly-by over the air control tower and the Air Boss (twice). Speeding in a residential area. Disrespectful behaviour towards an instructor. Engaging in a romantic relationship with an instructor. Dangerous manoeuvres during training exercises. Plus the rap sheet that his commander reeled off at the beginning 😂 He really lives up to his callsign 😂
I remember the first time watching this movie. I was 12 years old when this movie came out on tape to buy in early 1987. I Remember that because my teacher in school had told our class that we were going to have an easy day and she had brought a movie in for us to watch. She also said that she had checked with her husband to make sure that the movie would be ok for her to show her class. she hadn't seen the movie yet and she didn't want a movie with bad language or anything. Her husband told her it was fine. Then when she put the movie in for us to watch, yep you guessed it, the movie was "Top Gun". The teacher let us watch it anyway. lol
Tony Scott was Ridley Scott's brother. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by The Righteous Brothers is a classic song from the 1960s. Many music reactors on RUclips have reacted to it and The Righteous Brothers' version of "Unchained Melody."
I went to see this way back when it was released in the cinema in the U.K. in '86, cracking movie, the 80s was the greatest decade for just about everything!

This was a good recruiting movie. It came out the summer before my senior year in high school, and a lot of people thought the Navy was just cool fighter jets and volleyball games, so they signed up, only to be hit hard by reality.
In 1968, I was a Weapons Control Tech. on the F-4 Phantom II stationed in S. Viet. (USAF). That's the same jet that Maverick's dad flew in the movie. While in Viet., we lost 2 R.O.'s & 1 mech. for different reasons who were ejected into their canopies. You have to have air speed to blow the canopy out of the way! I took R&R in Sydney (Jan. 1, 1969) & met a girl from Caringbah. We wrote & I managed to obtain a 1 week leave to return to Sydney in March. After returning to the U.S., I flew back to Sydney & we got married in the Presbyterian church downtown.
A pilot doesn't pick his own call sign. It's usually given by other pilots because of whatever mistake you tend to commit, or it fits their personalities. Maverick tends to break the rules.
Growing up in the 1980s like I did, you don't skip out on what this film meant to the culture. Months prior, a film of similar content called Iron Eagle (loosely based on true events) that had spawned 3 sequels. But Top Gun would eventually outrun, outgross and overshadow that film. Cruise as an leading man on his A-game with a great supporting cast. Everybody wanted to be a fighter pilot after seeing this and the impact on recruitment was unbelievable. No.1 film of 1986, soundtrack goes platinum and the song "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin won an Oscar & Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Top Gun was a video-game franchise, 18 games in a row. Top Gun was in limited re-release for IMAX theatres only in 2013 and it was the first time I'd ever saw it. Top Gun:Maverick (2022) is an incredible sequel and you'll definitely love that one. This was the first of many collaborations from Tony Scott (Ridley's brother) and producers Jerry Bruckheimer & the late Don Simpson. Check out Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, the remake of Man on Fire, Domino, Déjà Vu and Unstoppable.
A fantastic but little mentioned Val Kilmer movie is Thunderheart. I think you'd enjoy it. Also definitely watch Top Gum: Maverick it's a really well done great sequel.
Val kilmers line about the plaque for the alternates, was ad libbed by Val hence the reason for anthony Edwards (goose's) laughter outburst and the wry grins on the other pilot casts faces.
Because of the passing of Jason David Frank a few days ago I've asked a few reactors to see Power Rangers season 1 episodes 17-21. He premiered in a 5 episode arc called Green With Evil. Episodes are about 20 minutes long. I believe it was his breakout role. You're awesome Mary.
I couldn’t believe when I heard that news. Tommy Oliver was the best of the Rangers. JDF cemented himself as a hero for just about every kid in the 90s.

You nailed it. Me too. And her accent is just so soothing to listen to, and her laugh is contagious.
I saw this in Colorado Springs when it came out, and on line in front of me were 4 young U.S. air force pilots seeing the movie for the second time. They were totally jazzed. It weird to think those guys are all around 60 years old now.
News Flash: We ALL age. But yes... TIME does seem to FLY.
your reaction when they ejected is accurate.
Another Tony Scott directed movie you should check out is "True Romance." It was written by Quentin Tarantino.
You will need to remember a boatload about this film if you watch the sequel. There will be so many callbacks to this.
No series, just a sequel. A must watch!
I was not an aviator but my experience as a squid was that most nicknames are given by your peers to commemorate colossal errors in judgment and more colossal embarrassment.
" They really DO be maneuvering SUPERfasttttt" lmaooooooo that was awesomely stated. Respect
There's only one sequel and that's the one that just came out. Great movie and I think you'll love it.
Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison in "The Doors" I a really good acting job.
A similar sort of role for Tom Cruise, and a movie I think you would definitely enjoy, is Days of Thunder, which is about NASCAR racing.
Cheers!
There was only one sequel, and it took 36 years to come out. Widely considered to be a phenomenal movie, extremely well done.
Most people miss that Merlin is played by Tim Robins
Song in the bar is " You've Lost That Loving Feeling" originally by The Righteous Brothers in 1965, and covered by various artists, with the most popular cover being by Hall & Oates in 1980.
19:03 "Somebody help them" Mary they are flying. What and how do you expect to help them?🤣🤣
Had a blast back then when this came out.
Mary really needs to watch The Righteous Brothers sing these iconic songs. Unchained Melody and You've Lost That Loving Feeling.
Love watching movies with you. You are so fun and have the cutest smile. This film is fire.
The opening bar song is one of the most played songs of the 20th century
Love your humour. "Here we go, strap in fooolks." :D
Plus the rap sheet that his commander reeled off at the beginning 😂
He really lives up to his callsign 😂
Highway to the Danger Zone is the theme song, it was written for the movie. Kenny Loggins did a ton of 80s movie themes.
The song is "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by The Righteous Brothers.
The teacher let us watch it anyway. lol
Two really good movies with a young Val Kilmer, "Real Genius" and my all time favorite, "Top Secret".
Tony Scott was Ridley Scott's brother.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by The Righteous Brothers is a classic song from the 1960s. Many music reactors on RUclips have reacted to it and The Righteous Brothers' version of "Unchained Melody."
Watch the Live version of Unchained Melody.
I went to see this way back when it was released in the cinema in the U.K. in '86, cracking movie, the 80s was the greatest decade for just about everything!
Big thumbs up to the editor. Adding so many fun little clips and notes. Great job!
You should put "The Last Samurai" with Cruise on your list as well, Mary.
The guy in called RIO for Radio Intercept Officer has no secondary controls instead has radar communication and fusesband things

This was a good recruiting movie. It came out the summer before my senior year in high school, and a lot of people thought the Navy was just cool fighter jets and volleyball games, so they signed up, only to be hit hard by reality.
I just noticed a theme in Tom Cruise movies where his dad had passed away. This movie Rain Man and A Few Good Men
There’s only 2 top gun movies, this one and the new top gun maverick that came out this year and is the biggest hit of year so far
From Tony Scott I recommend: True Romance, Man On Fire, Enemy of The State, Crimson Tide, Revenge and there are several more...
Best Navy recruitment ad ever.
YESSSSSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing, Ms. Mary. Love your reactions.
A fantastic but little mentioned Val Kilmer movie is Thunderheart. I think you'd enjoy it.
Also definitely watch Top Gum: Maverick it's a really well done great sequel.
There's only one sequel to Top Gun, and yes it gets better.
Val kilmers line about the plaque for the alternates, was ad libbed by Val hence the reason for anthony Edwards (goose's) laughter outburst and the wry grins on the other pilot casts faces.
By the way, the hardest landing to perform is landing a plane on the Carrier at night.
Cross between an orgasm and a bowel movement
Exactly, which was why Cougar was having a breakdown although most people didn't pick up on that.
Top Gun 2 is a masterpiece, I don’t say that lightly.
