  • In this video, I dive into the growing concerns about Julen Lopetegui's approach to youth development at West Ham United. Initially, there were high hopes after the inclusion of young players like Freddie Potts and Lewis Orford in preseason. But now, with the absence of academy star Luis Guilherme and the surprising trial of 31-year-old journeyman John Egan, doubts are starting to creep back in. What does this mean for young talents like Kaelan Casey, and is Lopetegui making the right calls for the future of West Ham? Let’s discuss!

    From what I have seen from the U21's and the pre-season games he took part in, Casey is nowhere near ready for the Premier League. We cannot blood youngsters if we are not sure - based on sentiment only. The stakes are too high

      Far too sensible, this. You're supposed to be screaming like a child for the coach to throw him in and then complain when we ship 5 against Leicester and destroy the lads confidence. Extra points for going on about tradition and the academy of football being dead etc....

    I have a different view. Lopetegui has two years to get us into Europe. Therefore he's got to get his strongest team for this season. Once we've got Europe they'll be more games, they'll be old players we bought needing replacing. He's only got players in for now to propel us up the league and cups, NOW.... We can start to phase in youngsters over the next seasons. If we want instant success we have to be patient for youth. If he'd been given a 5 year contract then he'd have time to build with the youth. But we as fans don't want to be stuck with someone on a five year contract if he don't work out otherwise we'll be in the Moyes situation all over again.

      I would absolutely agree if it was Hummels or Matip mate.
      But it's hard to make the case that Egan is more likely to get us into Europe than Casey.
      I don't even think Egan is quick enough for Loppys high line.

    Anybody slamming the John Egan transfer and it has suffered a backlash, I say this:
    People have short memories.
    The man is coming in to be 4th choice back up when we play 4 at the back.
    He is 1st choice back up when we play 3 at the back.
    Also and this is crucial:
    A) the same people all slammed the Dawson transfer, calling him a “donkey and Championship player”.
    B) Have they not forgotten that we lost both Ogs and Zouma for large chunks of the season in recent memory, this does happen.
    C) Those calling for Karlon Casey to be back up, I do get that but how many 19 year old CB’s are playing Premier League football 🤔
    If Egan proves his fitness it’s a smart little move on a one year contract for peanuts.
    The man is clearly an old school warrior type and good to have in the changing room and on the training pitch, plus he is an Ireland international
    There’s nothing not to like about this no risk contract IMO.
    I’m happy with it, we’ve got Kilman, Todibo and have Mav already it's crazy to be picky now.
    One more thing if he works out and gets another 1 year deal… homegrown 👌

    • @PokerMuppet
      @PokerMuppet 10 дней назад +1

      While I agree somewhat, I don't fully and I believe that you're missing part of the story while also assuming quite a lot.
      As far as I can see, most are not criticising bringing in another CB as long as they offer something evidently better than giving game time to a youth player. Most were excited to bring in Hummals who would never have been 4th... as he would no doubt have pushed Mavro back and even possibly taken a starting slot if he got the chance, while some doubt the fitness of Matip.
      The argument you make about Dawson while correct, it is made with hindsight and it was a risk... but how many free transfers have we taken for them to only flop dramatically? I am certain there are far more flops than those that work out.

    • @ZenMindful
      @ZenMindful 10 дней назад +2

      Those are all fair points and well put across.
      I'll only push back on one thing that I feel is important.
      In terms of risk, this is minimal. If Egan proves his fitness we have an experienced back up defender on a fairly low wage, in comparison to many of our other players.
      This man should be fine as a back up, and is likely more reliable than a 19 year old with minimal mens football (let alone top level) playing experience.
      It's a cheap backup for a year, that may come in handy.
      I personally don't see what's not to like.
      Thank you for your comment though 👍

    • @PokerMuppet
      @PokerMuppet 10 дней назад +2

      @@ZenMindful but that is exactly the risk. Is he good enough, fit enough and reliable enough? You say he's back up... but if Kilman for example was to be out injured for 4 months he'd have to be good enough to cover that and not drastically be a liability. You just can't tell if they are only going to play one game here and there or if they'll be required to play week in, week out.
      The thing with Hummals was that he'd most likely be pushing to start within a few weeks so you know that whatever player that was on the bench was capable to cover should the worst happen.
      The thing that has been missed by most is that another CB doesn't affect Casey or any other U21/U23 player as they don't count towards the Prem 25 man squad limit. So even if we did bring in another CB, Casey could still get a run out regardless as and when it was suitable.

    • @ZenMindful
      @ZenMindful 10 дней назад +1

      That's an excellent point.
      We can definitely agree that if a centre back gets injured we are short of cover as it stands.
      My argument is that having an experienced player like Egan in the squad gives us more insurance than say, just Casey.
      If after we have signed Egan, Casey looks better in training and is a more viable option that's great.
      My argument is why all the push back on having Egan as an option. The financial risk is minimal for the cover he could provide.
      Now of course I'd of prefered Hummel but that was never a realistic option because he's not joining West Ham to possibly see out his career on our bench. Especially when he can play in Romas first team on a 2 year deal as has been reported.
      Would I prefer Casey to be a better option than Egan as cover? Yes I would. But if Loppy feels that Egan is a better option then fine, especially for the money we are paying.
      It's a no brainer for me 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @PokerMuppet
      @PokerMuppet 10 дней назад +2

      @@ZenMindful I think most of the complaints about Egan are from those blinded by top name footballers regardless of logic on the matter. All over the internet it's whinge central any time West Ham is mentioned, including fan sites. Look at this video claiming the youth to be 'blocked' from progressing for example... While for the last couple of weeks it's been nothing but praise for Steidten and Lopetegui for the transfers and the positive start to the season. Simply no need to bring a negative perspective to this, especially now.
      I think Hummals had as much of a risk to take coming to us as we did taking him. The Prem is tough and imagine his legacy if he came and just got bullied and couldn't handle the pace... I know he had a great season last year but Germany is much like Spain in that most of the league are well off the pace.
      Matip would be my choice but only if the medical team gave him the all clear. Other than that I would agree that Egan would be the best alternative from those free agents available. On a side not I just saw that Tomkins is a free agent after being released from Palace, not that I am suggesting we go after him.

  • @rb8946
    @rb8946 11 дней назад +4

    I understand the negativity and worry around the blocking of young players, we are West Ham and used to it. However there are two simple reasons (imo) that we are looking at this signing.
    1) people at club think Egan is a marked upgrade on Casey (possible due to the vast different between youth and PL football, or even the increases huge difference between PL and Championship and demonstrated by Burnley, Leicester and Ipswich.
    2) the club see Casey as a better player but due to his age don’t want him sitting on the bench as 4th/5th choice (Alvarez) all season) so want to bring in a seasoned pro so that Casey can go out on loan when possible and get valuable game time.

    Dont think we can assert that the pathway from the Academy to first team is blocked based on a single example and one where there is, to my knowledge, little evidence that Casey is ready. Think we have to see how things develop and give Lopetegui chance to transition his new team before we can judge whether Academy players such as Orford, Scarles, Casey and the players on loan, such as Potts and Marshall, do have a pathway - certainly hope one ortwo make it.

  • @PokerMuppet
    @PokerMuppet 10 дней назад +1

    On another note, Casey wouldn't be blocked regardless as he's an U21 player and wouldn't count against our squad numbers. We can bring in another CB and still use any youth players we like.
    Quote from the Premier League website
    'A club’s Under-21 players are not included on the 25-man squad lists and are eligible to play in the Premier League. '

  • @markwilson4991
    @markwilson4991 11 дней назад +6

    I don't think it's necessarily the coach, more the club. Lopetegui used to coach youth teams. Don't you remember the David Gold comment about youth team players generally not good enough. It's a results based business, unless the youth are exceptional they have no pathway. We can't promote players if they are not up to the rigours of Premier league football

    • @JasperB12

      Casey also isn't even really a standout prospect. If Potts was a CB I might understand the complaint but Casey's played one senior league minute, get him out on loan, don't ever need to give them their first real minutes in the hardest league in the world especially at CB where one mistake can lose a game.

Have heard that Steidten is happy with the squad but it's J-Lo pushing for another CB...I agree with a lot of the sentiment in this video Gonz but they get to see him everyday in training etc, I assume he trains with the 1st team... What they should do is play Casey one half and Egan the other against Dag& Redbridge, a play off between them 😬 There is also the chance that Egan comes in and is actually BEHIND Casey, a back up to the back up..!

    I do get the frustration at Casey possibly falling down the pecking order. But he is still very young, the premier league is so tough, there needs to be a step in between u21 and the PL, perhaps multiple steps… via loans to L1 and championship.
    Loopy has a job to do, to get results. We must give him time to assess the youngsters and watch how they develop.
    Training day in and day out with our players will be good for Casey … but so will playing week in week out in a lower league.
    Egan could be like Dawson!

      This may be harsh, but Gonzo is right and also wrong on this. He is right in his feelings of protecting a sure pathway for the academy players. But, he is wrong because his thought process is all emotion and minor rational thought process. Gonzo terms Egan as a journeyman in a bad sense. Because he moved clubs to advance his career, there is something wrong with that. Also, he called him injury prone. His ONE injury last year kept him from playing. And from MY research, he's only had one other real injury, dating back to 2012 or 2014. And that was a broken leg. I thought Gonzo had trust in Lopetgue and Steitdan but I guess not. If Casey really was ready to step up, I believe we wouldn't be in the market if this was the case.

    Some “missing the point” comments here implying that Gonzo is doubtful about Egan per se.
    I interpret Gonzo’s words that he’s just doubtful as to whether Egan is a better option than Casey…… which is a different doubt.
    And then how this relates to the general question of the strategy on youth progression into the senior squad……. of which, taking into account the performance of the previous regime, people’s attention to it is understandable.

    When the rumours started about us getting Lopetegui I did warn people about him. I got accused of Trolling, of not knowing anything about him ... The one major issue I had with Lopetegui is that he does NOT promote youth players...Yes he might have been the Spanish youth team manager...but at CLUB level he does not promote youth players...he ALWAYS buys and usually those signings are not domestic signings. He is also known for not playing the most attractive or attacking football.... I said many times that he is the Spanish David Noyes .....We will not see our youth players in the 1st team with Lopetegui in charge

    If the intention was to play 3 central defenders and the holding pair of Alvarez and Dave ahead of them, I can understand bringing an additional player so that we could have two CD options on the bench. Realistically there shouldnt be more than 4/5 away games a season where this may be the choice.
    Even after hearing we were looking at free transfer options, and after looking at the available list of players, Egan never made my list of potentials. A very odd selection.

    I don't really have an opinion (or not a strong one) on the Egan transfer. What I will say is you missed a third similarity between Moues and Lop: He signs players that are an improvement on what we have and then doesn't play them.
    I've said before about youth players - I don't really know how good they are. Exceptional ones (Rice being an example) and even decent ones like Ben Johnson tend to make it but very few others do. I've never been one for shouting for the promotion of youth for its own sake or because of some homegrown ideal. If a player isn't ready or isn't good enough then it would be bad management to just promote them for the sake of it. As I say, I don't truly know how good someone like Casey is, so if he is a very good player then that's a different story.

    If we want the option to play 3 at the back we need more than 4 centre backs so adding a 5 makes sense, but that's not to say Egan isn't coming in as a cheap 5 choice option and Casey wouldn't start ahead of him anyway.

    Why would Loppy not play Casey if he thought he was good enough? He watches him train every day. He was also on the bench last match so he must rate him... surely. Therefore I'm confused and am also disappointed that Eagan would effectively go above Casey in the pecking order. I just hope we don't squander this great crop of youngsters...

    Money and expectations of todays game have killed acadamys.
    Success outways bringing in acadamy players.
    Its dead mate.
    Only a very small minority will play at the top flight.
    The rest will play in lower leagues and if they progress they will be on the market.

    I was about to say but I see it’s already been said but I disagree with this opinion. Doesn’t mean it’s bad news for the academy. Casey isn’t Prem ready and I think sending players out and building them up is the right thing. We need to see what happens next season. If these loanees do well and we then don’t give them a chance, that’s when we should be worried. Not right now.

    Gonzo, it is still too early to call it on Loppy's style and strategy. Bearing in mind how many goals we shipped last season, I don't mind beefing up central defence. I agree with concerns over our forwards, but we also need to give Füllkrug a chance and for the team to gel. I am in favour of bringing in the youth and giving them some time - let's get some results first.

I pride myself in being regularly wrong and I probably am again but I had hoped that our crop of seriously talented youngsters would be given a chance to prove themselves but it appears that they won't. Surely the point of the academy is to provide the next generation of West Ham players....the signings suggest to me that the door into the first team has been slammed shut to our youngsters and I believe that is the wrong thing to do....

    Pathway blocked! What is it with this kind of insidious claptrap? It's absolute nonsense. No one has been or ever will be blocked from progressing, not at this club, nor at any other. It's financial and good business sense to bring young players through and it pleases the supporters... The ONLY reason a young player doesn't progress is that they simply are not good enough. Remember all the fuss made about Perkins when he went to Leeds? He made a single appearance for them before being loaned out to Oxford and only made 3 appearances for them as well and is now at Leyton Orient who are currently in League One.
    There are 20+ young players at every club trying to get a chance in the first team each season... Even if only 1 player makes it that is still 20 in the Prem and 100 across the top 5 leagues in Europe... EACH SEASON! There simply aren't the spaces for that many new faces so only the absolutely very best get a chance. Casey nor any of the others are at the level required...
    To go from all the positives about Lopetegui and Steidten and the work they have done over the summer and the positive start to the season to know bring this unwarranted and unwanted negativity is an absolute disgrace. TBH I am surprised you didn't start blaming and slagging off Sullivan for the situation too.

    Unfortunately some of the youth aren’t up to standard…. for the moment. As I have said before j-lo main target is to get into Europe, then start bringing in the youth. I haven’t got a problem with that. So I don’t really get what the problem is. Do you want European football or have youth in and finish 11th? Just saying

  • @danieldacosta4350

    The manager isn't blocking youth and his use of the squad to date highlights decisions based on merit rather than favouritism/prem tested. Egan was highlighted rated a past clubs, Gills, Brentford before his injury and the short term signing of an extra CB is prudent not a block to progression.

    I want Casey to get his chance mate, of course I do. But I can completely understand why Loppy wants 4 senior CB's (so would I). It's easy to look at this while we've got no injuries at the back, but 2 seasons ago we had our entire first choice back 4 injured at the same time. I want to see Loppy give Casey chances out of choice not desperation, that would be unnecessary pressure on the lad. I'll have an opinion on Loppy's motivations at the end of the season, it's far too early now.

    As much as I want to believe that we have a wonderfuil crop of kids in the academy, perhaps it's just not the case? Players that we dreamt would be superstars, have moved on and not done much. Diangana, Perkins, Chesters, Coventry, Ashby; all talked up by us as the bright future of West Ham, and none really improved after leaving us. Perhaps the coaches, including Lopetegui, who see these players every day know more than we do about them.
