I am so glad I held out for the S5iix. I have a couple Samsung T5 512GB SSDs from my BMPCC4K days. With the S5iix, I can dust off these two SSDs and make full use of them again. The capabilities of the S5iix will cover my needs for a long time to come. I was looking at a few other brands and models for my next upgrade. But, after watching several videos of the S5iix, I think I know what my next camera will be. I'm looking at all of my camera gear to see what I can sell off. LOL.
As someone that hasn’t bought a camera in a decade, what made you drop the BMPCC?
@@RHStevens1986 As a low budget/indie filmmaker reliable autofocus is important for production. I love BRAW. Which is why I like the S5iix, because I’ll be able to record BRAW to the Blackmagic monitor. Since you have to get an external monitor for recording raw. Plus, I can plug my SSDs into the Blackmagic monitor and record ProRes as well.
The design of the X and ProRes options, makes it a desirable choice for me. Great video, keep it coming!

Love that they fixed the autofocus even in 1080p in higher frame rates. Panasonic becomes my favourite camera brand.

No, they don't. I asked this same Q about PDAF in 1080p 50-120 fps on Lumix USA stream yesterday and then the man on stream answered that as they already said previously their cameras decide what AF type to use in a specific situations... bla bla bla.... they have PDAF in about 99% of situations.. But no one confirmed that they have PDAF in FHD FF 50-120 FPS... moreover, he just ignored the same question from other people (I saw about 10 other people who asked the same question (there were 58 people on stream at that time I was online) and didn't answered the question directly - like guys no we don't have that. Why? Because they it doesn't have PDAF in higher frame rates... Undone said they fixed - lol.... Richard Wong said true that it still has old CDAF as he still has their camera.
I placed a pre-order from 2 months ago, can't wait for it to arrive!! IMO the all black color not only look sleek, I don't want others to know what kind of camera I use haha. If they do want to know, they can just ask me then I can expand my connection haha.

I pre ordered my S5iix last month i'm hoping for an end of month delivery but the dates here in Canada are so here and there.. between may - July. I cant wait to just record to SSD. Ive had a Small rig / SSD mount looking at me for the last 2 months.. ugh.

Thanks for all of your tutorials on these cameras Sam they’ve been a huge help. I bought an s5ii X a couple of weeks ago. My big concern with this camera is moire. I’ve only had a day testing it with lenses so cannot report issues yet. But the S5IIX doesn’t have a low pass filter anti-aliasing filter. I’ve seen a number of people highlighting moire with is camera. I love the rich features of the S5iiX, anamorphic options, its low light performance is very good, it’s menus are great, it has nice form factor, and the price point is fantastic. But I am prepared to sacrifice all of this if moire is even occurring from ‘time-to-time’. I cannot have doubt about a camera in this regard. As a comparison the Sony FX3/FX30 have low-pass filter. Other examples would be The Lumix GH5 which doesn’t have filter, but the GH5S does (as it’s video orientated). Same with the Lumix S1: the S1 doesn’t have filter, the S1H does. I wondered if you’d experienced moire with your S5IIX? Many thanks Sam.
100% would order the X over the ii if I was starting from scratch or upgrading from the S5 or another camera. As mark ii owner I'm content with paying for the upgrade key. Does look slick though.

Depending on your shooting style S5 atm retails for €1700 with 2 lenses, S5 II for 2300 and S5 IIX for eye watering 2800 with one lens. You can also get S5 used for around 1k atm with kit lens and some extras. If autofocus is a must - sure. But don't most videographers use manual? For photography different story of course.
I got the S5 in November of 2021, and have just love it. It's odd, it's my go-to street photography camera where i'll just throw on a 50 year old 28mm f/2.4 lens and snap away all day, or I'll throw on an anamorphic (I have the 50, 75 and 135mm Sirui) and just go all full blown cinematic with it. I will be picking up the S5iix however for the improved stabilization, the codecs and just learning it'll do blackmagic raw? oh yeah I'm totally sold (since i'm primarily a bmpcc shooter, I have the OG, 4k and 6kg2) that's just crazy. the fact that i'll be able to go out and shoot anamorphic footage, in BM raw, and it'll just work in Davinci is kind of gaming changing really.

I started a while ago with the GH5. Then added the GH5s. Then the FullFrame hit and I got the S1 and later the S1H. Some days ago I ordered the S5II but could not sleep well. Two nights later I ordered the S5 II X and had a much better night:-)
Sam, thanks for the coverage of the s5iix, I'm thinking about upgrading from the S5 mk1 to either the ii or x, and I assume all my lenses will just work better with the phase detect (I have the lumix 85mm, 20-60mm kit, and 70-300mm as well as some random primes). Also I don't know if anyone has covered the wireless streaming capabilities from the s5iix as that's one of the differences which could be useful for me as I shoot a lot of live events and concerts at venues, and would love to see it covered more in depth as that might be the thing that tips me more toward the x.
I'll be swapping over from my GH6 to the S5 IIX shortly, just for the Phase Based Autofocus. Thankfully I can still use my Samsung T7 SSDs to record in ProRes422 10bit.

Buying a camera system of this price is something you don’t change for a while. I don’t want to be stranded in 5-7 years. Since I already owned the Ninja V, I decided to go with normal S5ii. The normal S5ii will be getting RAW feature too but it will be paid.
Thanks for the review bud! I have a GH6 and am seriously considering getting this as well. The gh6 is a beast of a camera but this seems to be the perfect addition when I need reliable auto focus and low light performance!
Quick question concerning the auto focus - have you had a chance to test it out with an EF to L-Mount adapter and say Sigma lenses?

Just bought my first (of three planned) S5M2X to replace my GH5M2 and GH5S MFT system. I'm stoked, in fact, borderline giddy. Plus, I only paid £1699 brand new from an authorised Lumix UK dealer *and* got an 85mm Lumix S Prime for gratis too. What's not to love.
Great video mate. I was convinced from your s5ii video. As someone who films exclusively indoors (I do cinema room tours) as a first full frame lens do u think the 18mm f1.8 would be a good choice?

indoors? Sigma 20 or 24 1.4 would be my choice for around $800 can always use that extra stop and they are cinema lenses with declick, MF lock, AF lock, etc. or go nuts with the 14 1.4 but that is around $1800
Do you use a screen protector for the LCD, and if so, which one?
It'd be great if there was a 3 axis IBIS. I only want up down and rotation. the tilting and skewing from the extra axes in most systems looks pretty bad. Kinda like Adobe Warp Stabilizer at default settings kind of bad.
I have never noticed that warping once in three years of Panasonic usage. I have the S5IIx and after the firmware update any trace of it is gone down to 20mm.
My s5 (mark 1) is more than good enough for me right now but the mark 2 (non x) will be next up when i upgrade

While style may appeal to some, gray labels on a black body will be counter productive when working in the on a darkly lit film set. I have been enjoying Panasonic cameras for quite a while, as I currently own EVA1, S1H and GH5 models. The additional codecs on the S5iix impress me. I’m just wish they didn’t make the button labels hard to read.

Hey Sam I saw you had a canon c70 same as me. Now I have the S5IIX do you know how to record the build-in mic along with the input let's say rode wireless go II mics? I used to do that on the c70. and I can't find a way to do that here. For some reason the camera shuts the internal mic when an external is plugged in. however when you import the clips into davinci it gives you 4 channels which 3 of them are empty...

That was my move a year ago. I waited 3 years for the a6700 but Sony didnt deliver. And I regret nothing .

@@frankbregulla564 Nope I had my Sony a6300 for 4 years and the a6000 before 3 years. The S5 is 1 1/2 years old and its only the beginning. I can rent a BMPCC 6K or Red Gemini anytime for free in case I need them. So I dont know what you are talking about.

Hey. Not currently HOWEVER, you can record via HDMI and SD cards simultaneously
I wish it could record braw straight to a hard drive instead of having to use the BM Video Assist.
My only gripe with it is that the greyed-out buttons don't match the white text on Panasonic's lenses and that just bugs me like mad haha. Also a little annoying to see them in low-light scenarios.
I've just bought this to replace my S5 which I'll sell off (the autofocus ruined so many shots haha, so needed something more reliable), and feel like it was a lot to splash out for that, but hopefully worth it!
I’m keeping the S5II since I find the ProRes file sizes similar to the 6K Blackmagic raw file sizes from my original S5. Might as well shoot raw with the same file size when that upgrade comes out ;)
Precisely. Giant ProRes files that grade exactly the same as the internal codecs are pointless for most of us.

Is there anything about Canon or Sony features that you miss while using this camera? Things like the menu, autofocus, buttons, colour science, image quality (both photo and video) and of course lenses. I am a complete Hybrid shooter 50/50.
Hi. Great question. I LOVE the canon colours and contrast straight out of camera BUT it lacks dynamic range and flexibility.
The only thing I miss about Sony is the 120fps and if we’re talking FX6 the built in VND, other than that, V Log is THE BEST image I’ve ever worked with and I’m staying for the foreseeable. 👌🏻🎥 …
For photos, I think the Canon R3 has much more AF features for sport and so do some of the Sonys but for what I do, it’s more than enough.

I’ve never actually tried the FX3 but it’s the same sensor as the A7siii right? I’ve tried that. If it’s the same then I’ll stick with the Lumix 🙏🏻🎥
@@SamHolland the FX3 doesn't have a viewfinder, and with the resolution limits doesn't make it the most versatile, or much of a hybrid at all. I think Sony will have a harder time selling FX3 now, or even FX30.
Already traded my S5 for a preorder just waiting for it to arrive. 😇 it looks so clean. and i love that it minimizes the gear to take with. i hope someday we can do away with rigs entirely.
how much were you able to trade your s5 for ?
@@hugocalvovisuals i traded as soon as the s5ii was announced so i think it was around $1k like new for mine. maybe a bit more idr. i did have to trade another couple pieces of kit whose workflow would have been superseded by this camera anyways so no loss there. now i am patiently waiting to see what panasonic does with the m43 lineup as the g100 is my current fav body they make. extremely capable hybrid in a super tiny body. im hoping for a mark ii w pdaf and usb c. literally just that would be worth it.
I only wish it didn't crop 4k60, but other than that particular gripe, it's an amazing platform. Do you / anyone know if the intervalometer allows sub 1 second, e.g. Nikon Z6 can be programmed half second. This is a thing.

Lumix has the L mount alliance to choose from. There are tons of lenses.
I'm still not sure if want to go with this or Sony ZV-E1. Same price.
Don’t do it. Check out Patrick Tomasso video on the Lumix S5iiX. He mentions the Sony in that 🎥 MUCH MUCH more value for money in this one.
@@SamHolland I'm using the original S5 current and focus breathing/ pulsating is really visible and annoying. Guess my concern is if that isn't improved in S5ii, I would really regret not switching to Sony. Or Fuji X-H2. Or even OMD OM-1. All of which are about $2k price mark.

I think i'm one of the few that actually likes the red accents on the S5ii rather than the all black S5iix. However I still find it odd that they offer the two models, yeah, £200 is not that different, but the upgrade for S5ii owners is poor. The origional S5 got RAW via HDMI as a free update!
I've heard two, that the cameras are identical internally.
As a youtube creator myself, i'd have liked the internal prores/all-I via SSD, rather than external RAW via HDMI. The camera is aimed at folks like me, who are not pros, and to be honest, i'll probably never buy an external recorder, like an Atmos Ninja. Having said this, I feel the external BRAW/Prores, should be a free update, and there then could be a better paid update, for the £200.
While the S5ii's Longop is harder to edit (needs a powerful computer), I knew I was less likely to need Prores/All-I, as they take up much more space. Having said that, It would be nice. My X-T5 has All-I after all, and it costs less than the S5.
I really do not think it would hurt sales of the S5iix, if an paid firmware update, brough the S5ii to near parity with the S5iiX. I think enough folks would but the X, just for its looks alone.
Its still to this day a very strange decision to launch two cameras so similar.
I'll wait for the S1H-X
Now I’m stuck with an s5ii that no one wants to buy for a decent price so I can trade for the x.
It’s the same sensor, same processor. Why wouldn’t they have a paid upgrade for all intra and ssd. Even inferior cams have it.
