This piece was played for the first time inside of Milan's Duomo, during the funerals of Alessandro Manzoni, the greatest italian writer of all times after Dante Alighieri. People were really sad during this ceremony, Manzoni had been one of the most important people, together with Garibaldi, Cavour, Victor Emmanuel the II... during the italian unification, so I dont think they were headbanging in excitement were they first listened to this XD

As a matter of fact, the second half of XIX secle for the italian people is call Resurrection, because in that period was born the Unity of Italy (thanks to historical great men as Giuseppe Garibaldi or Giuseppe Mazzini).
In that same period, there were writers gave a civil contribution to the foundation of the unification of Italy. For example, about the literature there was Alessandro Manzoni and about the music was Giuseppe Verdi.
Initially, Verdi wrote the Requiem to Gioachino Rossini (another great italian composer) but for some problems (I don't know exactly what problems), then Verdi decides to dedicated the Requiem to Alessandro Manzoni, the man who writes a novel that could make Italy united on a linguistic level. The novel is call “the Betrothed”.
The novel also became famous abroad thanks to a 1989 series with famous american actors (for example Danny Quinn - the Anthony Quinn’s son - who played one of the two protagonists).
I hope the speech is clear, but if I should have missed some point, it would be nice to deepen :)

    Solvet sæclum in favilla,
    Teste David cum Sibylla!
    Quantus tremor est futurus,
    quando iudex est venturus,
    cuncta stricte discussurus!
    Tuba mirum spargens sonum
    per sepulcra regionum,
    coget omnes ante thronum.
    Mors stupebit et Natura,
    cum resurget creatura,
    iudicanti responsura.
    Liber scriptus proferetur,
    in quo totum continetur,
    unde Mundus iudicetur.
    Iudex ergo cum sedebit,
    quidquid latet apparebit,
    nihil inultum remanebit.
    Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
    Quem patronum rogaturus,
    cum vix iustus sit securus?
    Rex tremendæ maiestatis,
    qui salvandos salvas gratis,
    salva me, fons pietatis.
    Recordare, Iesu pie,
    quod sum causa tuæ viæ;
    ne me perdas illa die.
    Quærens me, sedisti lassus,
    redemisti crucem passus,
    tantus labor non sit cassus.
    Iuste Iudex ultionis,
    donum fac remissionis
    ante diem rationis.
    Ingemisco, tamquam reus,
    culpa rubet vultus meus,
    supplicanti parce Deus.
    Qui Mariam absolvisti,
    et latronem exaudisti,
    mihi quoque spem dedisti.
    Preces meæ non sunt dignæ,
    sed tu bonus fac benigne,
    ne perenni cremer igne.
    Inter oves locum præsta,
    et ab hædis me sequestra,
    statuens in parte dextra.
    Confutatis maledictis,
    flammis acribus addictis,
    voca me cum benedictis.
    Oro supplex et acclinis,
    cor contritum quasi cinis,
    gere curam mei finis.
    Lacrimosa dies illa,
    qua resurget ex favilla
