I love how the movie recontextualizes Simon @ 1:32 In the original series it is ambiguous if he was merely struggling to break out of the enemy's grapple. But in the movie we can clearly see what he is struggling with is the last step. If he executes this finishing move without Kamina, its proof he can do it without his bro and that he is going to have to continue doing it without him
I like the original version more cause to me a breaks out of the grapple with help of the struggle he has gone thru having lost Kamina but both are good
Gurren lagann is a masterpiece that truly pushes the medium of animation forward while telling a brilliant story filled with peak fiction character writing
Viral's reaction about kamina's death in the series is far more heartbreaking than in the movie. He really thinks that kamina is his only rival and a formidable opponent. His death affected him in certain ways
I can't remember which fanfiction i read that did it but one of them had an extra quote when kamina used it where he commented that he was going to borrow his drill for it and it's now my headcanon that Kamina always acknowledged that the drill for that move is Simon's
It really shows how much of an impact Kamina had, it was so inconceivable for Kamina to die that Viral had assumed the several fatal blows delivered to him hadn't done anything. But to be fair, a real man never dies, even when he's killed!
Yeah, and to think that Simon was practacally the man who made all of Kamina's BS real is a reall kick in the balls in his Ego. And plus he survived the Team Dai-Gurren Giga Drill Break Special just adds salt to the wound.
I’m so glad to see copyright can’t keep this scene down. I’m so excited to see it on the big screen next week. Keep digging to the heavens Team Dai Gurren!
I was ecstatic to see it come back up! I didn’t fight anything, so that means that Aniplex of America has decided that Gurren Lagann is for the people as long as hype isn’t interrupted!
I suffer from chronic depression. Any time it's gotten REALLY bad, I watch this anime. And without fail, every time, this scene is the moment I stop feeling held down and can control my life again.
I'm right there with you. I come back and watch these scenes when it gets really bad. I feel like Rossiu hearing Simon's voice and my will to fight is refilled.
1:34 Feels like this is Simon's (and the audience's) goodbye to Kamina. His part in the story is done, and he can rest. Simon knows he'll do what he can to make his Bro proud and to grow, and we bid farewell to a wonderful character. Amazing series and movies.
I looooove the fact that most of the Kamina scenes in the flashback weren't even in the movie. To a fan, they've already seen the anime and they see it as a cool throwback. To an outsider, the scenes look brand new and that only helps strengthen the impact in my opinion. Younger me during anime flashbacks always thought what the characters would do off-camera. If I let go of my memories of the TV anime, these moments feel like that. Two brothers sleeping giving their shoulders to each other really feels like something that would be an innate memory of a person. I love it either way.
This series (anime and movie) saved my life, i caught a clip, it happened to be this scene, and at that point in time i was really close to ending it bc of everything going on, but something about those words hit deep, and then i got interested, watching the show made me forget what i felt and made me inspired, i recomend it to anyone and everyone i talk to now
My Bro is dead. He's gone. But he's on my back! In my heart! He lives on as part of me! If you're gonna dig, dig to breach the heavens. Even if it's my own grave I'm digging, I keep going! Once I've dug my way through, that means I've won! Who the hell do you think I am? I'm Simon. I'm not my Bro, Kamina. I'm me! Simon the Digger! Finishing Move! Giga....Drill....Break!
This will forever be one of the greatest scenes in anime history. It never fails to amaze me how well done this scene is. It has the music, voice acting, animation, EVERYTHING.
My grandfather just passed away. I revisited the series so I could have help getting over it by having something to relate to... it's hard to explain. Gurren Lagann has taught me to take my sadness over loss and turn it into strength. It's okay to cry for a bit but always remember to move forward. Gurren Lagann will forever be my favorite anime.
I love how the anime on the first half focuses on carrying someone's legacy and it shows different ways that Simon attempted to do so. At first, he only did what he could because Kamina was right at his back, keeping his vibe in check. When he had to go, it really left Simon in distraught, and because he had no one to keep himself from recklessness, he spiralled into depression and tried to carry Kamina's legacy in a very distorted way (becoming a whole different person, till one's self is diminished). It took Nia to remind him that despite Kamina's impact, a dead person will always be dead and can do no more. Trying to think of what-ifs, only-ifs, and should-ifs only hinders yourself from achieving greatness. Simon, knowing this, finally took matters into his own hands and lived life once more, not to live in someone's image, but to carry on and achieve greatness in their name. It was the moment where we finally realize Simon was the main character all along.
I been rewatching this scene for many years, whenever I get really depressed, I don't why but this scene always snaps me out of it gives me the energy to carry on and not give up. Its sounds silly but Gurren Lagann made my life better.
watched this in theaters last week, im so happy i didnt miss this and the lights in the sky are stars. they really out did themselves in my eyes, this narrative will never get old
my brother passed away 3 days ago, I feel sad, furious and lost, but this scene just inspires me to go on and pierce the skies until we meet again Aniki.
This series was, is, and will continue to be one of the best and most influential pieces of artistic achievement known to man. I think it's just getting better with age.
I don’t think this can be emphasized enough, be someone’s Kamina. Be the person that lifts people up, and helps them to believe in the them, that believes in themselves.
Simon having to fight himself through fond memories that are painful to him now is such a powerful representation of grief. He can't help but wish that Kamina was with him to help him make the difficult decisions, but he has to physically pull himself back to reality and act of his own will.
This scene is why I prefer Happily Ever After to Sora Iro Days. They are both incredible songs, but the former goes along this scene, which is to me the absolute peak of the series.
I've noticed simon loves blue and kamina red hence and they both have dif color skulls on they backs each representing they litterly on each other's backs 🥰
Almost everything about this scene is better than the original. My one gripe is that the Kamina flashback montage goes on for a little too long here. The flashback in the series was shorter, which helped to sync the action with the lyrics better.
Can we just take a second to realize that all the Beatman Generals not only have fake heads like Viral’s original gunmen (this is to symbolize their competence), but they also have secondary forms like Cytomandre’s Demolition Mode. Through thinking of this, you realize that Tymilf’s gunmen also had a second form of which we will never get to see. Just something to think about.
